MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

TIME TO COMPLEMENTING EACH OTHER AND ENABLE HEALTHY MARGIN SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends Two months to go for the end of the year but people have started celebrating. For last 4-6 quarters used to work from home restricting themselves into single rooms in their homes or some remote locations. Now since there is a sense of novelty, at least of the year, people are happy about it. From the IT market perspective, the entire country is gung-ho about the growth. There is an increased budget from the customers and OEMs have also set aside good marketing budgets this quarter. People have started moving out and meeting people in physical events but with optimum caution. Cloud adoption is moving to the next level and also the data center requirements. Investment on cyber security is skyrocketing. On the other hand, partners business is mostly likely going through a better phase now. The fierce competition is now slowly changing for friendly competition and in many cases complementing each other. This is heling the partners to expand geographies without having any offices in multi locations. They are trying to leverage each other’s strength. Progressive partner associations like ISODA and ASIRT are paving path for the partners partner bonding. From time to time, they are organizing meets and orientation get together to educate and encourage partners for closely working with each other. This has enabled the partners to gain better market position and geographies also. Earlier these partners used to work in silos and addressing the bit they were expert in but now they can take any project opportunity coming to them and addressing the customers requirement in any location. The biggest challenge for the customers has been the post sales services, which is the biggest weakness for the partners too but having worked closely with each other this weakness has become a strength for many of the partners. I must congratulate the partners who have made such arrangements with each other and encourage others to enter into this type of arrangements. Apart from entering into good business opportunities margins remaining healthy, which otherwise used to be eroded earlier times. Keep it up and keep doing good work.

INTERVIEW

ANTHONY SPITERI, SENIOR GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIST, PRODUCT STRATEGY, VEEAM SOFTWARE

“WE ARE NEVER GOING TO PRETEND TO BE A COMPANY THAT WILL SAY IT CAN DETECT RANSOMWARE BEFOREHAND BECAUSE THAT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.”

DATA SOVEREIGNTY IS OBVIOUSLY A BIG ONE AS PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THEIR DATA IS CRITICAL Anthony Spiteri leads Service Provider products and partners program at Veeam. Speaking to Enterprise IT World, Spiteri talks about the product line up, the outlook of the company and the role Veeam has played in pushing Cloud adoption. In an interview with Enterprise IT, he speaks about a range of issues including Katan10, partner program, back up and data recovery for containers and for open-source platforms. Read on to know more the company’s initiatives… Why do you think the migration from VMware to Red Hat environment taking place? The open source and the cloud native world has made people more aware about different software available in the market and Red Hat obviously played very well in that space. They have Openshift, OpenStack and Red Hat virtualization platform. The Red Hat Virtualize is based on KVM, that’s one reason. The second is people are saying that VMware is becoming too expensive and it’s difficult to justify the cost anymore. Customers and CIOs are moving back from public to private cloud owing to hypervisors and the availabil-

ity of new technologies. Is Veeam marking this lc as well? Yes, I began to see this shift five plus years ago when I worked for a service provider. The shift is more about the technology available on premises now and if you can get the same sort of experience in terms of consuming services on premises, then why go to a cloud if it costs more. The rise of infrastructure as code, API’s, automation, and software as a service has also driven a lot of people back to on premises. That’s where the multi cloud comes into play. Data sovereignty is obviously a big one as people understand their data is critical and in certain regions regulatory or otherwise, people want to keep their data on premises. I also believe

people have just gotten used to the fact that they can have the best of both worlds these days. So you’re of the opinion that it will be a hybrid one? Absolutely, hybrid multi cloud. Public cloud players pushed a lot of their marketing on moving from capex to opex but effectively today, everything is as a service—even at Veeam, we’ve moved to month by month billing for a lot of our services. So that has changed the dynamic so that argument doesn’t hold anymore. While your roadmap for 2021 includes multiple products, is Veeam Availability Suite version 11a the primary focus for the brand? Yes. That’s right. Everything kind of focuses on that. We wouldn’t be anything without the Veeam Availability Suite because that is central to everything that we do from a hypervisor perspective. But make no mistake, the backup for public cloud is equally important to us as we feel that hasn’t been tapped as yet. The growth of Kubernetes container technologies is very evident. Which one is important to Veeam? The short answer is every platform. Kasten K10 is beautiful because it installs across almost every Kubernetes platform including Red Hat Openshift, IBM Cloud and other public cloud. Kasten K10 is a Kubernetes deployment, so it deploys as an application inside Kubernetes with multiple containers and the product is portable. In fact, we don’t worry about the platform, from a Veeam Backup and Replication point of view, because it is agnostic. Here’s a question on behalf of the CIOs. When a service provider releases new update its challenging for customers to upgrade immediately. Customers complain VM is not supportive of the newer version. What are your thoughts? Generally, any software that upgrades pose challenges and a lot of planning goes into new updates by a company. I would never advocate people upgrading straightaway and do testing. This is also dependent on the scale and capabilities of the company.

MUST-KNOW KEYS TO BUSINESS READINESS SUCCESS KRISTINA BECKWITH, Senior Manager, NEOS, Capco

In a world where change is the only constant, ensuring your business has the tools to adapt and successfully embrace change is a priority. In the insurance industry, tight timelines, lack of resources, and small budgets often cause insurers to undergo complex business transformations without a thorough change management plan in mind. Our champions of change share how proper leadership engagement, communication, and training are critical for sponsors to deliver when executing transformational change. Leadership Engagement The first step toward business readiness is cultivating deep sponsor and stakeholder engagement. This begins by working with leadership to define their goals and vision of the project. Once stakeholders understand the end goal and benefits, they will reap from a project, they can begin designing a roadmap for change. The roadmap should identify the current state of how the stakeholders are operating and provide a framework of what needs to be done to prepare the organization for change. During this period of goal setting, the business should identify “change champions” who are key stakeholders that who will help guide the organization through change. Once a thorough analysis is done of the current state, sponsors can understand how prepared stakeholders are and begin to implement the next segment: training. Training We recommend tailoring training plans to the specific needs of the people and processes affected by the project. Providing pre-work in the form of short e-learning models and self-study goals for specific topics that are more complex, are good ways of preparing participants prior to classroom or virtual training sessions. The days of full day/week, inperson training is over! In some cases, an “early look” or test drive of new systems may be helpful to get a taste of new technologies before they are fully implemented. The sooner the people who are going to be using the new systems get accustomed to the upcoming changes,

18 SME CHANNELS NOVEMBER 2021

the better. An early look at the new systems provides an opportunity for the leaders of change to listen to employee pain points, which emphasizes the importance of the next segment, communication. Communication Building business readiness is incomplete without a sustained communication strategy based on persistency and transparency. Feedback circles and focus groups should follow the “early look” at new systems so employees can ask questions. This approach indicates to employees that leaders of change want employees to be involved in the incremental improvements and not feel left behind. Even before a system test drive, we recommend conducting group interviews to listen to and anticipate concerns. With this knowledge, the change management team can provide clarity or alter communication strategies where necessary. In addition to the opportunities presented by interviews and focus groups, we suggest a top-down communication approach from the start that clearly articulates the vision of the project. The best communication strategy includes frequent checkpoints and clear status reports at each stage of the project. In order to support transformational organizational change, having comprehensive communication strategies, emphasizing experiential L&D and promoting collaboration between varying levels is critical. This will ensure you are building a flexible environment that can maintain a competitive advantage in a digitally transforming market. We have guided numerous leading insurers through complex transformations , and we can attest that the key element to successful transformations was active and consistent change management. Our specialty in digital transformation has enabled steady and efficient implementation of change while consistently demonstrating leadership engagement, communication, and training. Whether an insurer is implementing new technology, improving current processes, or launching a new capability, change management is essential to ensuring the successful adoption of new initiatives.

VIDEO SECURITY IN SME MARKET IS GETTING MORE INTELLIGENT AND CONNECTED

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may not be as large as companies in the enterprise market, but they are equally important in contributing revenue to the economy. According to World Bank, formal SMEs contribute up to 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies. They represent about 90% of businesses and more than 50% of employment worldwide. SMEs grapple with tight budgets, fewer administrative resources, and lack of in-house IT talent, particularly in the face of the unique challenges brought on by the pandemic. However, in truth, with the technology being matured and more products available in the marketplace resulting in cost reductions, the security goals of SMEs are evolving and getting more advanced. Gaining a proactive approach with AI Security installers around the world have been asked for optimal solutions that can help SMEs balance budget and security needs. With a lack of administrative resources, it is less likely for SME customers to have dedicated security personnel to look after daily security operation and management. Sometimes when a security breach occurs and loss suffered, there could be a gap in security for a considerable amount of time until they have noticed it. Today, technology has taken video intelligence to the next level with increased accuracy and performance, thanks to AI development and Deep Learning algorithms. There are many industries and markets where AI already is making an impact in significant ways, including SMEs who used to be faced with thousands of recorded videos find-

ing evidence of an event. Now, they can enjoy realtime and accurate alerts with fewer distractions. They also gain a proactive approach by identifying potential hazards before they happen. And all this at only a small incremental cost to their business. One example is use of Hikvision’s security devices with AcuSense technology powered by AI. AcuSense works to distinguish between human, vehicle and other objects using its smart algorithms. This means it can filter out security alerts associated with human (and/or vehicle) only triggered those for further attention and action. This greatly helps SME customers save on the overall labor cost that could otherwise be used for business improvement. Seeing with clarity and color Video systems have embraced the evolution of resolution for some time – from 480 pixels, 720 pixels, to 1080 pixels and now 4K. People want to see more and see more detail when they are needed. For SME customers, this is not an area they would risk compromising in a security system. Why? Imagine if they found a video clip containing key evidence of an event, but the video images were grainy and unclear. This would make it difficult to see a face, or to distinguish the color of clothing or of an automobile. All efforts would be in vain. Research shows that color is important to aid clarity, improving object recognition. It also shows us that in the CCTV world, there is a ‘strong correlation’ between camera performance and color fidelity. The ability to see detail and color in the dark is one of the most important aspects of a

security camera and there are many technical factors that influence this ability. For example, the sensitivity of the image sensor, the lens aperture, and applied image processing. Today’s new technologies have empowered modern video cameras to see better in any light and in high resolution. Hikvision’s security cameras with its signature ColorVu technology are a great example of this. They guarantee video with colorful details even in extremely dark scenarios. A next-generation series of the cameras goes even further, using 4K Ultra high definition (UHD) to deliver crisp images that provide richer detail. Checking in remotely and respond promptly The enhanced ease of connectivity and scalable bandwidth made possible by Cloud technology is stimulating more companies, including SMEs, to connect a lot more video security cameras to their networks. Having all the security systems and data tucked away in an IT closet is no longer in the best interests of many SMEs. Push notifications, remote viewing of video, and cloud services are now mainstream for SME customers and their security solutions must support these capabilities. Among others, Hikvision’s Hik-Connect app offers seamless connection with all its security devices, allowing SME customers to view realtime videos, playback, and receive event notifications remotely wherever they are.

ungible Inc., a pioneer in data-centric computing, today announced its latest channel ecosystem partner Savex Technologies, one of India’s largest Information and Communication Technology Distributors. Fungible is increasing its investment in India by building out its sales organization and further developing its design center in Bangalore. The strategic collaboration agreement further expands the Fungible business and market footprint in India. Designed to drive deeper levels of reseller engagement across the region, the larger distribution network aims to provide better partner access to Fungible solutions. “We are pleased to collaborate with a leading technology solutions provider such as Fungible and showcase their solutions and services to our reseller base,” said Raunak Jagasia, Director Enterprise Business and Alliance at Savex Technologies. “This strategic partnership will enable us to further deliver Fungible technologies into the channel, ultimately supporting our mutual customers and helping to ensure success in this fast-growing market.“ The Fungible Storage Cluster (FSC) is a workload-centric NVMe/TCP solution that delivers on five key customer requirements: Efficiency

at Scale, Consistent Performance, Cloud-like Agility, Data Protection, and Simplified Management. The FSC solution consists of two critical components, the FS1600 storage nodes and the Fungible Composer software. The Composer software abstracts the complexities of provisioning and allocating resources to a volume based on workload demands using plug-ins and APIs. The storage nodes are pools of resources that process required data services and deliver capacity and performance. Advancing the Fungible vision of each workload becoming its own infrastructure composer, the Fungible Storage Initiator PCIe cards off-load data services off CPU, allow for greater configuration flexibility, and drive greater security and efficiency. Deployment of SI cards requires no changes to the OS or BIOS. The combined solution of the Composer software, FSC, and SI cards offers a fundamentally more effective way to deliver workload-centric storage. “Savex is a critical part of our expansion strategy supporting Fungible’s reseller partners to deliver Fungible products to customers,” said Paul Barr, Director of Global Channels at Fungible. “We’re excited about our partnership with Savex. India is often at the forefront in the adoption of

promising new technologies and based on the fast-growing demand we see for our DPU based products, Savex will be critical in enabling local partners.”

spending reports, and flexibility to adjust services and costs as it goes. We assist throughout in any stage of the cloud adoption journey, and the earlier the process, the better it is, as we can provide deep advice and insight.

VENKATRAMAN D, (EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SALES & STRATEGY), CRAYON

“WE AMPLIFY OUR PARTNERS’ SOLUTIONS IN THE FORM OF CASE STUDIES AND HELP THEM IN CREATING COLLATERALS.”

With our partner-centric approach, we always work hard to make our partner’s life easier by providing them with technology options that suits all scales and flexibility. Which are the verticals that are currently driving your business? We see an upsurge in Multicloud solutions. A Multicloud strategy is at the core of driving digital transformation to meet the growing and evolving business demands. With the pandemic impacting businesses, where organisations had to take overnight decisions on remote working, they realized the benefit of cloud solutions. However, managing the realities of the process of adopting to a cloudfirst approach is easier said than done. Cloud-iQ is our self-service e-procurement platform, where one can manage cloud products, services, and economics across multiple vendors through a single-pane portal view. It provides instant access to cloud services, comprehensive

How was your last financial year and any expectation you have set for this year? Despite all the global setbacks, we have fared much better. As our whole business is focused on digital transformation, it took us less effort to have our teams working from anywhere in tandem as normal times. The Crayon group has also registered a revenue growth of 32 per cent in the second quarter this year, a significant improvement in profitability. As already mentioned, we are looking at growing cloud solutions market in India in the coming years. A Gartner report in early 2021 has already observed that spending on SaaS and cloud management and security services will experience double-digit growth in India for the first time. What is the market sentiment now with the slowdown in COVID numbers? I can say that the market sentiment is improving and is fairly optimistic at present. The last two years have been a testing phase for everyone. We observed a slight drop in business activities too. However, we know that everything will take positive turns once the pandemic situations get stable. We are now seeing a lot of enthusiasm, especially in terms of digital upgrading projects. Presently, there has been huge demand and adoption of digitalization globally. Even SMEs are adopting digital faster now than ever. I firmly believe that the worst is behind us, and I am positive that the subsequent waves will not be that negative for all of us. What is your Go-To-Market strategy? The recent tough times have made us embrace digital platforms like never before. Today, every business is looking for ways and means to look out to their customers remotely and serve them with increased efficiency. Hence, we make sure that our GTMs also caters to our partners’ business interests. We have been working with leading media houses in the IT vertical to provide the right visibility to our partners by creating platforms for them to demonstrate their solutions to the world.

office thus significantly increasing their productivity and commitment. Businesses can now opt for remote working instead of letting employees commute to the office for daily operations. SUHIL GOYAL, CO-FOUNDER AND MD, RAHI

ORGANISATIONS’ SHOULD FOCUS ON PERFORMANCE, SECURITY, AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS TO DETERMINE WORKLOAD PLACEMENT How can IT leaders shift their focus from infrastructure – onpremise, in the cloud or at the edge of the network – to workloads keeping the current situation in mind? In a post-pandemic world, it is ideal to migrate workloads to the cloud for benefits and to prepare for the next unforeseen disruption. When the emphasis shifts from infrastructure to workloads, decision-making focuses on service delivery rather than IT architecture. Organisations’ should focus on performance, availability, security, compliance and other technology and business requirements to determine workload placement. Some legacy applications can be migrated to Software-as-a-Service solutions, while others may need to be hosted in co-location facilities. For example, emerging distributed cloud services can prove to be a good option because they allow running applications and data from geographically dispersed sites at the network edge.

How can enterprises enhance customer experience by managing workload placement? Digital usage has skyrocketed at organizational and industrial levels. Many businesses adopted digital transformation quickly and embraced the work-from-home culture. A hybrid cloud is the intersection of an off-premises, hyperscale cloud service and a privatized IT infrastructure that you run as a cloud. A Hybrid model is here to stay; businesses must adapt and cope with the transformation while preserving productivity and raising engagement levels. Rising remote workforce needs a model that differs from traditional systems for easy collaboration of remote and on-premise employees. Hybrid workplace allows remote staff to continue to operate seamlessly. Employees feel independent and competent in executing their responsibilities with less room for micro-management. Real-time collaboration allows teams to work closely from home and

What is the Role of Hyper scale Data centers in reshaping India’s IT landscape? With increased usage and more dependability on IT infrastructure everything is scaling and becoming ‘Hyper’. And, as a result of their massive size, they impose significant environmental costs. Data centers are now attempting to operate on renewable energy to optimize their resource utilization and reduce environmental impacts. The trend will continue, and we will be seeing more and more innovation in sustainable components with improved efficiency. A Hyperscale Data Center is a huge warehouse-like structure having its own servers, routers, storage system, powerhouse, and networks. This is generally used for big data and cloud-based applications. With ever increasing demand for data, hyperscale data centers are expected to grow at an exponential rate in the next decade. Many industries that previously had no or limited access to the IT infrastructure are now moving towards the cloud-based system, primarily triggered by remote working requirements. These Hyperscale Data Centers offer unique ways of energy efficiency and functionality that will make them the preferred choice of facility for most companies. How can enterprises normalize wide adoption of cloud-based data centers? The pandemic has changed the global working model. Organisations have adopted hybrid work culture and as a result, companies are shifting to cloud-based data centers. Innovation, efficiency, and sustainability will be the driving force behind any data center technology going forward. Cloud servers, imply that you are using someone else’s resources, whereby the provider ensures quality and maintenance of the system, ensuring better resource optimization. In cloud-based data centers, the data is remotely stored, managed, and backed up on a regular basis. Quality service providers offer the option of securely transmitting data and receiving them via a public network. At any given time, files and documents stored online can be accessed from anywhere. Building a data center from scratch requires a huge Capex and time. Cloud-based systems enable seamless customization and scalability.

CASE STUDY

THALES PAYSHIELD HSMS HELP RESONANCE SECURE PATIENTS’ COVID TESTING INFORMATION IN AUSTRALIA About Resonance Australia With a pedigree as a PCI compliant Fintech solutions provider protecting sensitive payment data, Resonance Australia offers an innovative technology platform that fuses payment and nonpayment data, offering a new approach to secure business data management. Their proprietary in-house technology is highly customisable and configurable, allowing their customers to create an array of unique solutions (products and services) to address each customer’s specific needs and requirements. Resonance works with corporate and enterprise customers, including financial, hospitality and healthcare industries enabling their customers to create value from their data by providing a seamless integrated environment bringing together data from areas across customer information management, payments, loyalty programs, campaigns, workflow and reconciliation.

Business Challenge The COVID-19 pandemic introduced a global requirement for all people, in all communities to present themselves for regular testing. Traditional healthcare facilities in Australia were not equipped to handle the volumes of patients, resulting in the establishment of hundreds of drive through testing clinics. These makeshift clinics have been established in car parks and open lots of land with little or no access to conventional infrastructure (shelter, electricity, computers, networking, etc.). Initially the only option was to use paper-based forms and pens to collect patient details, resulting in data transcription errors and mass congestion within the laboratory environment. With millions of people needing to be tested on a regular and ongoing basis there was an immediate need for an automated, highly secure digital solution providing a high degree of data accuracy, at a reasonable cost with near immediate implementation turnaround time.

Solution The Resonance Stratagem processing technology is perfectly positioned to respond to the COVID-19 business challenge. Stratagem was purpose-built to process large scale, high-volume payment transaction data with the highest levels of security available in the industry. However, the

28 SME CHANNELS NOVEMBER 2021

flexibility of the system allowed it to be configured for the processing of other types of sensitive data, making it ideally suited as a tried and tested platform to process millions of patient data records for COVID-19 testing. Privacy of patient information being of paramount importance, is addressed in Stratagem as data confidentiality is a default feature within the platform enabled via Thales payShield Hardware Security Modules located in multiple hybrid cloud-based data centres specifically for this purpose. Healthcare requirements for privacy of patient information security is eclipsed by the fact that Resonance is a PCI compliant and certified business (via its payment processing operations). The PCI methodologies and business practises have been applied to the security of patient data. Resonance repurposed various building blocks with the Stratagem technology delivering a reliable and highly accurate COVID-19 testing solution within a matter of days. The COVID-19 solution comprises of: 1. Rugged, highly secure EFTPOS terminals are used by the staff at drive through COVID testing centres, to capture patient’s data. EFTPOS machines were chosen as data entry devices since being highly secure, portable (battery operated), GPRS enabled for data communication while also possessing rubber keys allows the healthcare staff to easily capture the patients mobile number while wearing latex gloves and other PPE (Per-

sonal Protection Equipment).

Result & Benefits Through this new streamlined, accurate and secure digitised patient data collection process, new COVID test sites can rapidly be established allowing the linked pathology laboratory to process large volumes of tests in an automated manner and improve testing turnaround time frames to as little as 12 hours with the following benefits. • Currently processing 1,000,000 tests monthly • 20% reduction in processing a patient in the field • 74% reduction in laboratory capture and processing time

About Thales The people you rely on to protect your privacy rely on Thales to protect their data.
