MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

COVID-19, LOCKDOWN 4.0: THINGS MOVING SLOWLY SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends When I am writing this article, I am under Covid-19, Lockdown 4.0 - in fact, the whole country is under the Lockdown 4.0. Although the offices of many organizations have opened but the employees are not seen coming to the office. Even the employers are not ready to take the risk of bringing or spreading Covid-19 positive in whatsoever format. The employees are of opinion that if they are affected and their family members are affected who will take care of them as the cases are going faster during time. Secondly, as far as major public transportations are concerned including local trains in Mumbai, Metro rail in Delhi NCR, Kolkata, public bus services in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad are yet to open. Taxi and auto services is not that great and costly afire. Employees also come from near by cities of the business centers and there is also intra state moratorium on the business services. Many of the partners and OEMs are speaking to me and discussing about the business situation. Every one of opinion that the situation is not good event though the offices are partially open. Customers are not willing to invest in technologies except a few i.e. security, collaboration, cloud, physical security and monitoring devices, and hygiene products. So, in this situation, partners’ businesses are not that very good. They are reassessing their investment and expansion for rest of the year. So, what to do? This is right time that partners can expand their business and become dynamic to accommodate new line of business. They need to think practical and look at the market changes very closely. Since there is a lot of training session going on across the world, business partners need to acquire information as much as possible attending these paid and free technology sessions and certifications. They should treat the period as a productivity time rather than sitting idle. There is of course desperation and depression among all, and mental health of people is not better either. Therefore, I would suggest you should pursue your passion of entertaining yourselves and your families.

By integrating SONiC into the DNA Dell’s Enterprise SONiC Distribution removes complexity and creates an agile and flexible network through an approach built on open standards. “Our customers tell us that, while a hybrid cloud approach is critical to their success, they struggle to maintain and scale their networks, and manage them to effectively avoid multiple points of failure,” said Tom Burns, SVP & GM, Dell Technologies.

AWARENESS ABOUT THE DATA PRESERVATION IS IMPORTANT What are the challenges customers have during lockdown from storage point of view? Remote working has become the new reality of business for the world today. A new, more connected world is emerging at a pace faster than anticipated. It’s a world that rides high on digital transformation and embraces it across every walk of life and business fuelled by data. Today, companies are leveraging data to improve customer experiences, open new markets, make employees more productive, processes seamless, and create new avenues of competitive advantage. Businesses and users are also facing various challenges including data security, lack of data integration & data management, insufficient storage capacity and speed performance issues related to drives while working from home. It can be inferred that with the continuous rise in applications and services, the demand for storage devices (hard disk drives, flash drives, SSD) is also bound to grow. Additionally, as more and more businesses are now moving from a client/server model to mobile or on cloud, we are looking at demand of up to 20TB data being deployed in the cloud for mass storage. According to IDC, there will be more data stored in the public cloud than in traditional data centers by 2021. IDC has also stated that the data generated by the digital transformation will grow to 175 zettabytes by the year 2025 – representing an increase of ten times from the 16ZB in 2016. Data is created at three key locations – traditional and cloud data centers; enterprise-hardened infrastructure like cell towers and branch offices; and on the PCs, smart phones, and IoT

devices. Thus, data created is further propelling the growth of global datasphere expansion and therefore, stemming the demand for data storage. Additionally, awareness about the data preservation is important to protect the organizational information. According to the organizers of World Backup Day, almost 30 per cent of users never backup their data which increases the chances of losing valuable information. An unanticipated accident could destroy important files, for instance when the devices are on the move. To safeguard the data, well-organized content with regularly planned backups helps in preserving the data on computer, phone and other devices. Recurring data backup helps in keeping the data secure throughout and provides easy access to the information as and when it is required. Additionally, it is important to know the capacity of data to be secured; hence, one should choose the right storage drives to backup the data. What are the security challenges that Seagate storage is solving along with storage? Organization have adopted remote working as the new norm to maintaining their business continuity and it has proven to be an effective way to keep employee safe as well. However, working from home has also brought focus on the issue of cyber threats, especially due the fact that organizational data is being access over personal networks that not as secure as enterprise networks. Employees are now conducting virtual meetings with their peers using personal computers and smart phones. These devices aren’t integrated with the necessary security tools and antivirus, thereby

increasing the risk of potential malware injection on the devices as well as corporate servers/cloud. In order for the businesses to protect their data from the vulnerabilities, it is essential to store data on encrypted drives. Seagate Secure™ selfencrypting hard drives protect data at rest and reduce IT drive retirement costs. Additionally, these drives keep the data safe even if the drives are misplaced. Similarly, companies should look for Common Criteria accreditation for security features, and ensure every drive complies with the top industry standards for security. Seagate® has achieved Common Criteria accreditation for products such as Nytro®, Exos™ and BarraCuda® portfolio—these drives fulfill international-recognized regulations and offer a wide range of storage solutions to as per the demands of the enterprises. Also, by following certain processes such as by using Secure Encrypted Drives (SEDs) to encrypt user data and locking data during transport, utilizing AES 256 encryption (ISO/IEC 18033-3) & hard drives that are Common Criteria certified. Following the (ISO/IEC 15408) standard and practicing end-of-life data erasure on devices can also help in protecting the sensitive data. Seagate Secure devices offer two level services i.e. Essential and Certified, Essential features are available across all Seagate drives and Certified features are for government, healthcare, finance, and education industry. Furthermore, businesses should test for secure remote infrastructure to ensure that they can support the expected increase in remote access. They should implement Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that can bypass geographic restrictions and are unaffected by

With businesses rapidly adopting digital transformation and deploying AI powered applications and cloud services, large amount of data is being generated every second. Therefore, it becomes imperative for organizations to focus on data protection, storage and recovery. To protect data effectively, Seagate believes that well-organized content with planned regular backups can help efficiently store the data on computer, phone and other devices. Organizations should also evaluate how much data needs to be secured and what are the right storage drives to do so. To help choose the right drive, here are a few tips businesses should keep in mind Tip 1: Think Capacity If the data is mostly in the form of text files or images/videos or a huge library of multimedia content, then Seagate Backup Plus Hub drive with up to 10TB of capacity would be the best fit.

In case of less data storage requirement, a mobile drive such as Such as Barra Barracuda Fast SSD, Backup Plus Portable drives and One Touch SSD with 1-2TB of storage would be sufficient. Tip 2: Ensure Easy Access Seagate caters to the requirements of a wide array of customers including student community, working professionals as well as entrepreneur and business owners who are always on-the-go. Customers and businesses can keep their important data accessible every time on a Seagate portable drive; however, we also advise them to backup their old data on the cloud or another backup drive so as to make more space for the new information. Tip 3: Pair Fashion and Function Seagate also offers a range of trendy hard drives such as One Touch SSD special editions, Backup Plus Slim or Special Edition game drives, which comes in bright and appealing colors and offer up to 5TB of data storage. Tip 4: Speed Up Your Computer Take your data to the next level of performance, reliability, and efficiency with internal solid-state

Tip5: Safeguard the data Seagate Instant Secure Erase renders all data on the hard drive unreadable in less than a second via a cryptographic erase of the data encryption key. So you can return, reuse or dispose of the drive securely; auto-Lock automatically locks the drive and secures its data the instant a drive is removed from a system, or the moment the drive or system is turned off. Seagate has also introduced the enterprise Exos Systems Nytro Systems, offering a revolutionary modular approach to designing and deploying data center storage systems. These drives are specially engineered to move the data around enterprise, cloud and edge efficiently, offering a variety of storage solutions to fulfil the demands of public & private cloud providers, service providers and traditional data centres. The designed systems being modular in approach are easy to set up, maintain, and expand thanks to the interchangeable FRUs and hot-swappable components, including the controller. Even if users want to maintain large scale systems, the modular approach drastically simplifies the user experience with easily replaceable parts.

FUTURE-PROOFING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE (CX) FOR A DIGITALFIRST ‘NEW NORMAL’

CHUCK LEDDY, B2B Brand Storyteller/Solopreneur

The term “customer experience” (CX) doesn’t seem to have a standard definition, but it’s often used interchangeably with customer journey, brand perception and customer engagement. In its broadest meaning, customer experience is the subjective impression (always viewed from the customer’s perspective) a brand makes from the totality of interactions, resulting in how a customer thinks of a brand across every stage, channel and touchpoint of the customer journey. By definition, one or two touchpoints in isolation do not make a customer experience: CX is made up of all the touchpoints across all the channels (i.e., omnichannel engagement) across the entire customer journey. Why is Customer Experience (CX) so important The way a customer feels about your brand will shape not only how loyal that customer is but also how often that customer refers your business to friends and family. Providing great CX increases customer loyalty and lifetime customer value, which directly impacts the bottom line. One oft-used measure of CX is “net promoter score” (or NPS), which goes from 1 (not satisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). A customer reporting an NPS of 5 is a loyal, repeat buyer who has such a positive perception that she promotes your brand within her circle, the most credible, valuable promotion any company can get. The customer reporting an NPS of 3 may be “satisfied,” but will also likely switch when your competitor offers a small discount. A customer reporting an NPS of 1 will not return and will share their bad experiences with others, a sure-fire revenue killer.

16 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2020

The CX opportunity COVID-19 has accelerated CX trends that were already percolating for some time: the crisis has become a catalyst pushing more customers, employees and businesses to adopt (or accelerate the adoption of) digital ways of doing business. Companies that started their digital transformation pre-COVID are outperforming rivals who are digital laggards. Why? Because people aren’t just working from home via digital tools, but also shopping and accessing service from home via digital tools. Moreover, the way customer service gets delivered has changed as call centers are now virtual, even as the demand for service has increased due to COVID-related economic uncertainty. In a future where rapid change and business disruption become the “new normal,” self-service tools can distribute incoming workload/traffic away from your overworked service agents, who can focus on more complex interactions that they typically handle better. Self-service is thus a CX (and employee experience) win for all involved. Digital-first is the one and only scalable and future-proof CX strategy available at a time when brick-and-mortar retail and face-to-face interactions have become (and will likely remain) problematic for some time. How to future-proof your CX Customers want service, but they increasingly want it via digital channels. For routine queries, today’s customer often prefers self-service tools that empower them to access service 24/7, through any channel and/or via any device. Omnichannel engagement will be a key competitive advantage for companies going forward, and self-service tools like conversational chatbots can fuel a scalable, digital-first and future-proof approach to CX. Blending self-service tools with human agents, empowering each to do what each does best, is a powerful driver of CX and high NPS scores. It’s not easy to do and will require investments of time and money, but getting your CX wrong will wreak

havoc on your revenues. No customer will tolerate long wait times, burned-out, overworked service employees who don’t understand their needs, unresolved issues/questions that leave them frustrated and churning, too much automation and not enough human touch, and service that isn’t personalized or empathetic. Blending self-service + human agents When customers consistently get their routine needs met, whether via self-service tools or by human agents (or both), your CX is good. But to create a superior, scalable CX that keeps customers coming back and transforms them into brand ambassadors, you need to occasionally deliver personalized, memorable moments of “wow” (NPS 5-type service). This superior CX takes a careful blending of self-service and trained human agents where you leverage every complex, nonroutine interaction as an opportunity to “wow” your customer. You do this by knowing your customer and what she expects at each step of the customer journey, then over-delivering on their expectations with stellar service. Often it will be your human agents who are intelligently leveraging customer data and/or your company’s knowledge base in order to deliver superior service. Your self-service chatbots, for example, can support your human agents once an interaction gets escalated by providing relevant data and/or suggestions. This “blended” service can create those moments of “wow,” which are CX gold. Consistently getting the small moments right is essential, but brands must also identify and leverage moments where they can go beyond the small things to create memorable moments that convert customers into brand ambassadors. To conclude, CX is a subjective perception encompassing all interactions a customer has along the journey. When you blend self-service options and trained employees to serve customers in consistent, scalable and memorable ways, they’ll keep coming back to you for more. That’s a future-proof CX.

MCAFEE UNCOVERS FLOOD OF ATTACKS ON CORPORATE CLOUD External attacks on cloud accounts grew 630 percent from January to April

SANJAY MANOHAR, MD, McAfee India

McAfee released a new research study titled ‘Cloud Adoption & Risk Report – Work-from-Home Edition’. The report uncovers a correlation between the increased use of cloud services and collaboration tools, such as Cisco WebEx, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Slack during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with an increase in cyber-attacks targeting the cloud. Based on anonymized and aggregated data from more than 30 million McAfee MVISION Cloud users worldwide between January and April, the report reveals significant and potentially long-lasting trends that include an increase in the use of cloud services, access from unmanaged devices and the rise of cloud-native threats. These trends emphasize the need for new security delivery models in the distributed work-from-home environment of today–and likely the future. In the time surveyed, overall enterprise adoption of cloud services spiked by 50 percent, including industries such as manufacturing and financial services that typically rely on legacy on-premises applications, networking and security more than others. Use of cloud collaboration tools increased by up to 600 percent, with the education sector seeing the most growth as more students are required to adopt distance learning practices. Threat events from external actors increased by 630 percent over the same period. Most of these external attacks targeted collaboration services like Microsoft 365, and were large-scale attempts to access cloud accounts with stolen credentials. Insider threats remained the same, indicating that working from home has not negatively influenced employee loyalty. Access to the cloud by unmanaged, personal devices doubled, adding another layer of risk for security professionals working to keep their data secure in the cloud. “We are witnessing an explosive increase in remote working and adoption of collaborative tools across industries in India. We have seen Cloudnative threats multiply seven-fold. Cybercriminals are adept at adjusting their strategies and are now focusing their efforts to exploit the sudden acceleration in cloud adoption.” said Sanjay Manohar, MD, McAfee India. “In addition, cloud traffic from

unmanaged devices and unsecure networks expose businesses to massive risk. Mitigating this risk will require companies to establish an integrated cloud security posture and deploy solutions that have visibility and security controls across every cloud service.” With cloud-native threats increasing in step with cloud adoption, all industries need to evaluate their security posture to protect against account takeover and data exfiltration. Companies need to safeguard against threat actors attempting to exploit weaknesses in their cloud deployments. Tips to maintain strong security posture include: • Think cloud-first: A cloud-centric security mindset can support the increase in cloud use and combat cloud-native threats. Enterprises need to shift their focus to data in the cloud and to cloudnative security services so they can maintain full visibility and control with a remote, distributed workforce. • Consider your network: Remote work reduces the ability for hub and spoke networking to work effectively with scale. Network controls should be cloud-delivered and should connect remote users directly to the cloud services they need. • Consolidate and reduce complexity: Clouddelivered network security and cloud-native data security should smoothly interoperate, ideally be consolidated to reduce complexity and total cost of ownership and increase security effectiveness and responsiveness. Report Methodology: For the Cloud Adoption & Risk Report – Work from Home Edition, McAfee aggregated, anonymized MVISION Cloud usage data for more than 30 million McAfee MVISION Cloud users worldwide who collectively generate billions of unique transactions and policy events in the cloud each day. This data set collected between January and April 2020, represents companies across all major industries across the globe, including financial services, healthcare, public sector, education, retail, technology, manufacturing, energy, utilities, legal, real estate, transportation and business services.

COVID 19 BRINGS PARTNERS CLOSER Complementing and coworking is the new normal. They wish to live to compete another day. BY SANJAY MOHAPATRA sanjay@smechannels.com

I

f Covid 19 has taken many things away from us and made people separated from each other, it has also brought many people together. In the Indian IT channel ecosystem, it has impacted positively by bringing the partners together and pushed them to work in tandem with each other, which was rarely seen in the past. Although the associations were created to sermonized togetherness and propagated theory of complementing each other but it was limited to not under cutting margin by quoting too aggressive pricing and passing the lead if there was no absolute competition or the solution was beyond one’s limitation. Ever since the nationwide lockdown, no one was able to step out of his houses and purchase technology to support him in work from home. He placed the order with his partner; but the Partner was also unable to deliver as he was under lockdown. After some days of impasse, partners could realize that by not supporting the customers

20 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2020

means losing business. Therefore, not caring about what would happen to their own business, they exposed their customers to other partners who were located near the lead, thereby ran a risk of losing the customer to the competition. This turned out to be a miraculous step for the partner ecosystem. When they started trusting each other, the business whatsoever started coming on their own way and this became a new normal. Today most of the partners are talking to each other and sharing their lead on national basis. A partner in Mumbai is passing leads of Delhi to Delhi partners and asking him to fulfill the order, who used to be a competitor in the past. Even intracity cooperation is on the growth trajectory now. A Delhi partner based out of Nehru Place is asking a North Delhi partner to fulfill the order of a North Delhi based customer. A partner of Juhu, Mumbai is passing the lead of Navi Mumbai to a Navi Mumbai partner and asking him to fulfill the

order, which he would never do in normal days. By doing this the partners are able to manage flow of business at the same time address customers with a limited workforce. Mumbai Vimesh Avlani, Managing Director of Graftronics says, “I am able to manage my business swiftly by executing order anywhere in India not even stepping out of the locality a single day. His peers in ISODA and ASIRT are doing this for him.” Avlani is also reciprocating to others by executing order and giving services on others’ behalf wherever he can in his personal capacity within the city or outside the city. This way he is not finding any challenge to his business while others are gasping with anxiety of loss of business. It is not Vimesh only but there are many partners who are coming forward and reporting this camaraderie during this time of difficulty.

WIRELESS CHARGING

CA-WCHP - USB-C DOCKING STATION WITH WIRELESS CHARGING BY SANJAY MOHAPATRA sanjay@smechannels.com

E

ra of the Wireless: Wireless charging docks allow users to charge their devices in the absence of a charging port or power outlet. Power is transferred to the users’ mobile devices without any connecting cable. This is done with the help of a power transmitting pad and a receiver, which is attached to the mobile device or in-built. Electricity is modulated to make sure that the charging pad and the battery can communicate with each other. In this way, the charger verifies that a valid battery is in place before power is transmitted. Recently, the use of wireless chargers has become extremely popular among technology enthusiasts. With time, more and more customers are shifting to the world of wireless charging. This is because wireless charging allows easy and fast charging without the hassle of USB cables, adapters, and power outlets. People do not have to depend on the availability of power outlets or wired charger while on the go. So, what’s the solution? Cadyce’s CA-WCHP wireless charging dock is one of the best wireless charging docks available in the market. 4 EASY STEPS TO SECURE CONFIDENTIAL DATA WHILE WORKING REMOTELY BY SANJAY MOHAPATRA sanjay@smechannels.com

P

ost Covid-19, a lot of the companies, who were earlier hesitant to let their employees work from home, will resist the remote working model much less. The coronavirus pandemic will change the world of work and leaders would become open to giving their employees more control over their schedules. For employees and teams to work from home smoothly however, IT teams need to provide technical support at all times. This makes IT security extremely crucial with the workforce having access to confidential organisational data from their homes. In such a scenario, how does one ensure data/ system security while working from home? Here are four easy steps that can help you keep your data secure. Prevent unauthorized system access Cybercriminals and hackers are everywhere, looking for an opportunity to hack into your system and gather important confidential data. And if you think they are going to let you off the hook during these difficult times, you are mistaken. The fear of unauthorized access is way higher during these times as hackers know a large portion of the population is working from home. Every small

22 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2020

and medium business needs to have a strong access control policy defined for their employees. So how does one prevent unauthorized access More than half of the data breaches happen due to weak or old passwords. Use passwords, and strong passwords and change time at regular intervals. Do not write down your passwords on your laptop/computers. If you move away from your computer, even for a washroom break, lock your computer. It doesn’t matter that you’re living alone and don’t have anyone around. There are multiple tools available to see if your password is compromised. Require two-factor authentication/ multi-factor authentication An increasing number of companies are requiring two-factor authentication when employees log in to their devices/accounts. Two-factor authentication adds a layer of redundancy to ensure that only the actual account owner can access their account. A hacker could steal an employee’s password, but they probably won’t have a phone that receives the verification

code or commonly known as OTP. Also, the hacker wouldn’t have access to a fingerprint, which is used in some systems. Honestly, adding one extra layer to the login process could make a lot of difference in keeping hackers out. Two-factor authentication systems can also serve as a type of alert when an unauthorized user is attempting to log in to an account. This will help you know when you need to change your password or contact your IT team about a potential threat. Beware of phishing emails and messages According to a recent report, phishing scams and malicious COVID-19 links have grown from 15 in January 2020 to 54,772 in March. If you ever receive an email around PPE’s, masks, hand sanitizers etc, think twice before clicking on the link. There is an increasing number of cases where employees receive such emails, which once clicked on provide an inroad to hackers with malicious intent. Secure your home networks Even if you have a separate work laptop provided by your office, while working from home, you’d

be using your home Wi-Fi. And your organisation’s IT team has no control over it what so ever. Changing password to something far more complex than just names or birthdays of family members is the most basic step in securing the home network. In case the IT team of your organization

fails to install a VPN client, you can always secure the WiFi network or individual devices, as you prefer, by subscribing for a paid VPN service. Use a virtual private etwork (VPN) on your work device before connecting it to your home network is another security practice that should be

followed. However, make sure to avoid free VPN’s as they are not safe and usually compromise security, killing the purpose of using it in the first place. These are some important tips that you can follow to safeguard your systems from being compromised and falling victim to a cyberattack!
