MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

SME CHANNELS’ SISTER PUBLICATION ENDED THE YEAR WITH A BANG! SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends Finally…We did it! The world’s largest CIO event CIO500 happened in India by Enterprise IT World, the sister magazine of SME Channels. The beauty of the event was that we an inclusive event where CIOs, vendors and partners got together and discussed with each other about their challenges and requirements from each other. At least 45 partners from various parts of the country joined the event as sponsors and exhibit partners. This is first time in the technology history of India, where CIOs from 500 countries joined the event under one roof. It was for the first time the entire technology providers in India joined the event from the sponsorship perspective. I am happy that CIOs trusted us that we can bring in 500 CIOs under one roof. I am happy that sponsors trusted us that we can bring 500 CIOs under one roof. My special thanks goes to Dell Technologies and Ingram Micro for becoming presenting partner to the event. It was not about the event only where there presentations, panel discussion, etc. but there were roudtable discussions on various technology vendors including Ingram Micro, Dell Technologies, Redington, Zoho Corp, Media Agility, Icewarp, Netmagic, Ctrls, Team Viewer, etc. and breakout sessions for every vendors. However, the benefit of the partners participating in the event was that they could meet their customers under one roof, they could interact with 100s of CIOs, they could exchanges 200+ cards with the customers, they could gift the customers with personalized mementos and goodies for a long time recall. What else is required? It was absolutely fantastic place for showcasing solutions and taking first step in on boarding customers for 2020. This became a benchmark for us for next year. Our plan for next year is to give it a bigger shape. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks for your support. Happy New Year 2020 in advance.

IBM’s Open Technology to Speed Response to Cyber Threats IBM today announced Cloud Pak for Security, featuring industry-first innovations to connect with any security tool, cloud or on-premise system, without moving data from its original source. Available today, the platform includes opensource technology for hunting threats, automation capabilities to help speed response to cyberattacks, and the ability to run in any environment. Cloud Pak for Security is the first platform to leverage new open-source technology pioneered by IBM, which can search and translate security data from a variety of sources, bringing together critical security insights from across a company’s multicloud IT environment. The platform is extensible, so that additional tools and applications can be added over time. As businesses move further into cloud maturity, applications and data are frequently spread across multiple private and public clouds and on-premise resources. Attempts to protect this fragmented IT environment often require security teams to undertake complex integrations and continuously switch between different screens and point products.

Check Point Research Leads to WhatsApp Group Chat Crash Issue Fix Check Point Research recently helped mitigate a new vulnerability in WhatsApp that could allow a bad actor to deliver a malicious group chat message that would crash the app for all members of the group. To regain use of WhatsApp, users would need to uninstall and reinstall it, then delete the group which contains the message. To create the malicious message that would impact a WhatsApp group, the bad actor would need to be a member of the target group (WhatsApp allows up to 256 users per group). From there, the bad actor would need to use WhatsApp Web and their web browser’s debugging tool to edit specific message parameters and send the edited text to the group. Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s Head of Product Vulnerability Research said: “Because WhatsApp is one of the world’s leading communication channels for consumers, businesses and government agencies, the ability to stop people using WhatsApp and delete valuable information from group chats is a powerful weapon for bad actors. All WhatsApp users should update to the latest version of the app to protect themselves against this possible attack.”

Businesses Faced a Surge of Malware, Ransomware This Shopping Holiday Cyber Monday and Black Friday are the proverbial holiday shopping seasons for cybercriminals and their strategic cyberattacks, including malware, ransomware and phishing attacks. Eager online shoppers are hurried to fulfil holiday dreams — often at the detriment of cybersecurity best practices and common sense. According to Adobe Analytics, consumers spent $7.4 billion online during this year’s Black Friday event, up $1.2 billion over 2018. Those numbers jumped for Cyber Monday, where retailers collected $9.4 billion in online sales on the frantic shopping holiday. That kind of volume — in terms of both people and dollars — makes for a lucrative target for the modern cybercriminal. In 2018, SonicWall Capture Labs threat researchers discovered a spike in ransomware attacks during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events, as well as a 45% jump in phishing attacks. Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2019 resulted in much of the same. SonicWall Capture Labs threat researchers recorded* a double-digit malware spike (63%) in the U.S. between the eight-day holiday shopping window from November 25 to December 2, 2019.

Organizations across the world are undergoing rapid transformation driven by technological progress and heightened customer expectations. Sweeping changes and Real Transformation are required to bring about foundational changes in how teams deliver value to customers. According to IDC, 40 per cent of all technology spending in 2019 will have gone into digital transformations, with enterprises spending in excess of $2 trillion. Transformation in the IT sector and Software Producing Organizations demands rethinking technology, processes and behavior. It requires crossfunctional collaboration, and crucially, stakeholder buy-in. In software teams, members find it hard to adapt to paradigm shifts such as pair programming, Test Driven Development, Behavior Driven Development, Agile and Scrum. According to reports in EuropeanCEO magazine, 50 per cent of business transformation programs fail because of poor employee engagement. Enter “Gamification”. Gamification is the use of game mechanics to drive engagement in non-game business scenarios, and to change behaviors in a target group to achieve business outcomes. At the core lies the concept of rewarding the “players” when they perform well in the “game”. Humans are “hard-wired” to enjoy games - they have a natural tendency to interact more deeply in activities that are framed in a game construct. Gamification incorporates game mechanics such as points, badges, challenges, leaderboards, rules and incentives that make game-play enjoyable, applying these principles to motivate the audience to higher levels of engagement. Gamification helps to ease in stakeholders into new habits and processes. New practices and paradigms can be implemented without imposing them top-down on teams who might resist change. Gamification is a bottom-up approach, with much of the process controlled and administered by peers. It employs design patterns and “game elements” that make the interaction “game-like”. The core element in Game Mechanics is “Rewards”. Rewards may be awarded to participants in several forms.

• Points: Points are numerical rewards for specific behaviors or achievements. These are the base unit of measuring accomplishment. Points provide immediate feedback on performance. Points are connected to other rewards such as levels or badges. Participants can earn badges or reach higher levels by scoring more points. So, there is an inherent motivation to earn more points by performing better. • Badges: A badge is a token of achievement, a milestone. Badges can be awarded automatically for a certain number of points earned, or for performing a certain-multiple of a specific task - such as say writing a thousand unit tests. Badges show other “players” the skills or accomplishment of the participant. Usually, one can earn several badges. • Leaderboard: Leaderboards are boards that are visible to all participants. They display participants’ achievements. They may show the names, rankings, and scores of the participants and their position in the overall game. They are a social and public aspect of the system, displaying each participant’s reputation and rank. • Level: Levels are “sections” of a game. Participants can reach higher levels by completing specific tasks or scoring a requisite number of points. • Progression: Progression shows the degree of advancement in a game or within a level. Numbers or infographics such as bar charts are used to depict progress. • Authority: Authority is awarded so that the participant can now control game elements and other participants’ contributions. In an entirely peer-controlled system, it allows certain members to moderate the activities of others. • Physical Rewards: Physical rewards may be awarded for certain tasks or exceptional performance. These may include things like a lunch outing or a certificate or trophy. Other game mnemonics that are employed in gamification include avatars, ranking, social status. Each gamified project may employ its own rules, such as the frequency of awards, reward ratios, avoidance or discouragement from certain activities, limitation over time, and so on.

These components, of course, fit within a broader framework. While the mechanics drive player involvement, it is critical to flesh out the high-level design principles from the ground-level action structures. The first steps in designing a gamified project are: 1. Identify needs and objectives (e.g. reduce defects) 2. Identify the practices and behaviors to change (e.g. implement TDD) 3. Identify the domains where to apply (e.g. sales and marketing, software development, quality control) Implemented with proper planning and design, gamification can bring about rapid transformation in the workplace, engaging all stakeholders and producing high returns on investment. As it is bottom-up and peer-administered, it is perceived as a just and honest appraisal system. Organizations such as LivingSocial have replaced their annual review with a gamified solution in which 90 per cent employees participated voluntarily. By providing team members the freedom to operate in their own space, gamification pro-

motes a culture of innovation in IT organizations. Through the experience of gamified platforms, organizations have reported high adoption and usage rates - as high as 97 per cent. Participants are also known to use the platform outside of their work time. The concept of gamification is not new. The first “business” game - a game of competitive simulation, began in Switzerland as early as in 1926, in the “house of fictional commerce”. Later, in the 1950s, many business games, designed to train senior managers, were developed. However, in the last two decades, gamification has gained traction globally. The gamification market is expected to touch $11.10 billion by 2020 from $1.65 billion in 2015 to - a CAGR of over 46 per cent. Gamification is not just applicable in profitmaking companies alone. It has proven its efficacy in various social and open platforms. Take the case of Stack Overflow (SO), the go-to forum for coders when they have a question. Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky, the founders, modelled SO on games. Participants receive points for good answers, based on a voting system. They earn

badges, gain new abilities such as editing others’ posts or closing questions. Users can offer bonus points or bounty on difficult questions. Participants can be down voted for wrong answers, and they lose points. It is regulated by the users, with no central authority. This system inspires users to provide solutions to challenging coding issues. It motivates people from across the world to devote time and effort to not only provide solutions, but also take on moderating and administrative tasks. And it ensures that the best in the business hang out there. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution “work” became “labor”, a means for monetary gain. We are now in the era of Industry 4.0. Work is valued for its intellectual content, challenges and satisfactions. The new worker- the millennial, seeks gratification and fulfillment through the built-in challenges of work. Having been brought up on technology, game-play comes naturally to the tech-savvy generation. Gamification is the natural progression of the work culture to a fullyengaged, always-on, fun-at-work lifestyle.

PowerOne integrates PowerEdge compute, PowerMax storage, PowerSwitch networking and VMware virtualization into a single system combined with a built-in intelligence engine to automate thousands of manual steps over its

lifecycle. At the heart of PowerOne’s autonomous operations is a built-in, advanced automation engine. PowerOne empowers users to focus on their business, whether that means deploying workloads, applications, or developing new products and services. Much like lane assist, navigation and other features in autonomous vehicles, the vehicle does most operations on its own while the passenger must let the car know the desired destination. PowerOne’s advanced automation allows administrators to state a desired business outcome – and the system calculates the best way to do the rest. The automation engine takes advantage of a Kubernetes microservices architecture and uses Ansible workflows to assist users by automating the component configuration and provisioning, delivering a customer-managed datacenter-as-a-service. PowerOne provides a single system-level application programming interface (API), giving users the control to create business objective-specific pools of resources. This API can be tied into existing tools, such as service portals, to deliver programmable versus manual IT operations. This is known as Infrastructure as Code – virtually eliminating the need to log in to individual component management systems. With PowerOne, organizations can create workload-ready VMware clusters in only a few clicks. CLOUDERA DATA PLATFORM INCORPORATES FOUR KEY ATTRIBUTES OF DATA ARCHITECTURE In conversation with Enterprise IT World, Vinod Ganesan, Country Manager, Cloudera elaborates on the scope of the multicloud adoption in the Indian market and how the functionality of Cloudera Data Platform that has a Hybrid & Multicloud Support, is Multifunctional, conforms to Security & Governance and supports Open standards offers a unique offering. BY NIDHI SHAIL

nidhi@accentinfomedia.com

W

ith the enterprise market embarking on a Digital Transformation journey, the business requirements are evolving and technology providers are responding to the changing demands by revolutionizing their offerings. . Multicloud Scenario in the Indian Market The biggest challenge which Indians faced was the law of the land. The strong data sovereignty concept, i.e. Data cannot leave the country was a complication. So, till a couple of years ago, public cloud was a big challenge because all the giants who operated in this space never had data centers in India. But over the last two years, that has changed tremendously. Now with multiple tiers four data centers set up across the country, the biggest challenge of sovereignty which didn’t allow people to adopt public cloud has been rectified. There is a very strong propensity amongst the enterprise customers to start looking at public cloud adoption. A lot of people look at cloud from cost perspective, believing it to be a cost-effective alternative. However, it is actually dependent on the function of the workload that is being run. For example, a persistent workload which runs every day for eight hours and consumes a fixed set of resources, when moved to a public cloud, would actually be more expensive compared to running it in-house. Taking into account the increasing market

18 SME CHANNELS DECEMBER 2019

demand for a comprehensive Data Cloud Platform, Cloudera has released its platform in the Indian market. The offering constitutes of the baseline for the fundamental data architecture that is required for organizations to transform. These unique key attributes are - Hybrid and Multicloud Support, Multifunctional, Security & Governance and Open Source. Hybrid and Multicloud Support This is the main ingredient which lends the agility that organizations are looking for in their data transformation journey. Multifunctional Different businesses come with their own requirements. In order to service them you need to have the capability to run different types of workloads on the same platform. For example, somebody might come with the operational data warehouse or an AI-ML based use case. Each of these workloads actually puts a very different type of pressure on the underlying architecture. Previously everything was being dealt separately. Everybody had their own environments, which created a lot of silos. Now, customers are demanding a single platform that can typically run and enable all these use cases. This brings in the multifunction aspect of the platform. Security and Governance There is a classic conflict between business and IT. Business expects IT to work at a particular pace in terms of launching new initiatives or analyz-

ing certain segment and coming back with what opportunity exists there. And rightly so, because in today’s world, that window of opportunities is open for a very limited time. So if you don’t capitalize within that window, you would have lost that advantage. So, they put a lot of pressure for IT to support these initiatives. IT in its own sense is plagued by the challenges associated with security and governance. They cannot compromise on these values because obviously it has far-fetching consequences. The value of data is compromised. So they are not able to turn around at the pace at which business wants them to go. So, some businesses find themselves turning to a public cloud provider or wherever and try to run this particular initiative. This creates a shadow IT where there are inherent security and risk associated with that kind of an approach. So, IT is being increasingly seen as what keeps the organization in sync. How do you now enable security and governance provided that one consistent framework, irrespective of where your data is? The moment you say hybrid and multicloud capabilities, there is a necessity to have these capabilities without compromising on the underlying security, which becomes the third fundamental premise. Open Source Half of the customers don’t want to get logged on to a proprietary technology. Open Source, on the other hand, is not just a community innovating,

“THESE FOUR TENETS OF BASELINE DATA ARCHITECTURE, HYBRID AND MULTICLOUD, MULTIFUNCTION, HIGHLY SECURED & GOVERNED AND OPEN, GAVE BIRTH TO A NEW CATEGORY CALLED THE ENTERPRISE DATA CLOUD. whereby you benefit from that innovation. It is also about open standards and Open APIs, which allows you to integrate a lot of things seamlessly so that your entire data and associated framework becomes highly interoperable and portable. These four tenets of baseline data architecture, Hybrid and Multicloud, Multifunction, Highly Secured & Governed and Open, gave birth to a new category called the Cloudera Data Platform. Cloudera has launched a data platform that is the world’s first data cloud which actually fulfils all these four criteria. Cloudera Data Platform supports hybrid and multicloud. It supports multifunctional workload. From a Data Warehouse to ML, to Operational Data Warehouse, anything

that the customer would want to bring all the way from edge to AI, onboarding any kind of cloud, or the public cloud providers,, so you are no longer worried about lock in with one particular technology. Use Case – Yes Bank Yes Bank has been using the Cloudera Data platform. Yes Bank has short circuited the whole data warehouse wave and directly went for Cloudera platform, which allows them to deal with all types of data whether it is structured or unstructured. And as a result of that, they will be able to build a very strong foundation for analytics. It has helped the bank in all of their hyper-personalization campaigns which they run for their customers. That

has improved substantially because they are able to use data to reach out to these customers.. Finally... Cloudera Data Platform helps in analyzing what workloads are suitable to move on to a public cloud. Cloudera assists the customers in aligning the economic models to help organizations adopt public cloud confidently and also get the best value out of it. For some customers, their choice of cloud is not cost driven, but it is because they want operational efficiency and they want to ensure that they are focused on the business outcome than managing infrastructure.

VENUGOPAL N, DIRECTOR OF SECURITY ENGINEERING, INDIA, CHECK POINT SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES (INDIA) LTD

CHECK POINT OFFERS A FULLY CONSOLIDATED CYBER SECURITY ARCHITECTURE Cybercrime and attacks are on a prowl. Organizations realize the importance of security solutions and the standard security solutions are not strong enough to protect devices and networks in workplaces. The new and modern solutions must detect new and advanced malware and vulnerabilities in networks, operations systems and apps, cloud etc. What are the cyberattack trends based on the mid-year report by Check Point and potential impact on the India region? In the wake of growing incidences of cyber security and ever-changing threat landscape,

20 SME CHANNELS DECEMBER 2019

enterprises need to be prepared more than before. One of the dominating and major ongoing trends in 2019 is targeted ransomware attacks. But what ends with a ransomware attack usually starts with a more silent sequence of bot infections. New tools, techniques and adoption of digital assets

have resulted into modern and challenging cyber threats leaving organizations paralyzed. According to Check Point’s mid year trends report, some of the major trends identified in 2019, are as follows: • Advance Email Attacks: There has been an

increase in email scams involving blackmailing such as “Sextortion” and “Business Email Compromise” (BEC). The email scammers have also increased the use of evasion techniques in order to bypass email security solutions. • Cloud Breaches: With cloud becoming an increasingly popular source to store data, it’s becoming apparent that relying on cloud providers is not enough. Based on the reports from threat Intelligence team of Check Point, poor management of the cloud resources remain the most prominent threats to the cloud ecosystem with massive data theft being the most common attack employed against it. • Mobile Evolution: Trends in 2019 show that more than 35% of organizations have been impacted by a mobile attack. There has been a

sharp rise of almost 50% in mobile banking trojans infiltrating mobile arena’s when compared with the statistics of 2018. It is interesting to note that that according to Check Point’s threat intelligence unit, an organization in India was attacked on an average of 1,767 times per week in the last 6 months, compared to the global average of just 595 attacks per organization. What is the potential impact of cyber-attack on the India market? Digital transformation is eroding traditional network perimeters with the adoption of cloud computing, cloud-based subscription services, and the ubiquity of mobile devices. The increased expansion of vectors means more ways to attack an organization. Keeping in view of the latest trends, cyber attackers have become increasingly sophisticated and have already started to perpetrate next generation crimes such as data theft, fraud, identify theft, etc. Most businesses are not prepared for cyber attacks today. They are trying to protect their IT environments against 2019 attack technology with security technology from 10 years ago that relies on detection only. They are stuck in the world of 2nd and 3rd generation security, which only protects against viruses, application attacks, and payload delivery. What this means is that networks, virtualized data centers, cloud environments, and mobile devices are left exposed. The key to cyber defence is an end-to-end cyber security architecture that is multi-layered and spans all networks, endpoint and mobile devices, and cloud. How is the end consumer affected in such a scenario? SA cyber attack can maliciously disable computers, steal data, or use a breached computer as a launch point for other attacks. Cybercriminals use a variety of methods, including malware, phishing, ransomware, denial of service, among others. Consumers should be vigilant to keep their phone’s operating system and apps up to date. Any time you provide a personal identifiable information, you should question the legitimacy and applicability. One person or a weakly enforced legislation will not deter poor practices or ill intents. Only through awareness and social encouragement can we protect ourselves against the next identify theft or social engineering attacks.

When it comes to emails or messages on social media, consumers should be mindful about clicking on any links (or any part of the message) sent through any digital communication means. They need to exercise caution and discretion when tempted to interact with such means of communications. What are Check Point’s offerings when it comes to providing its customers with a wholesome security portfolio? Cybercrime and attacks are on a prowl. Organizations realize the importance of security solutions and the standard security solutions are not strong enough to protect devices and networks in workplaces. The new and modern solutions must detect new and advanced malware and vulnerabilities in networks, operations systems and apps, cloud etc. The security “generation gap’’ identified, needs to be filled by deploying evolved security infrastructures combined with real time threat prevention, shared intelligence and advanced security across all enterprise environments. Check Point’s Infinity Architecture solution is a fully consolidated cyber security architecture that provides unprecedented protection against Gen V mega-cyber attacks as well as future cyber threats across all networks, endpoint, cloud and mobile. The architecture is designed in a manner that resolves the complexities of growing connectivity and inefficient security. What is your strategy for safeguarding your clients’ data? Check Point Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Software Blade combines technology and processes to revolutionize DLP, helping businesses to preemptively protect sensitive information from unintentional loss, educating users on proper data handling policies and empowering them to remediate incidents in real-time. unique format and insightful content delivered by participating vendors, industry experts and Ingram Micro executives made it a truly inclusive event, something the global channel ecosystem had never experienced before. In addition to the audience gathered at the 33 physical venues, thousands more tuned in to the live stream from their homes and offices in countries like Brazil,

Digital Transformation – The channel opportunity As one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing IT markets, India is digitizing faster than many mature and emerging markets. As digital capabilities and connectivity improve, technology is poised to radically disrupt nearly every sector of

India’s economy. The best way to accelerate this is to enable channel partners with the tools and training to provide their customers with the latest and most relevant technologies. While conceptualizing this conference, the team at Ingram Micro were motivated by three key objectives: a. Inclusivity and a desire to create communities without barriers b. Achieving as minimal a carbon footprint as possible c. Embracing digital transformation in every possible aspect By streaming to venues in locations like Guwahati, Jammu, Dehradun, Madurai etc., delegates were able to attend the conference in their own cities, thereby eliminating the need to travel long distances, simultaneously achieving the first two objectives. This distributed format also allowed the conference to have a far wider reach than conventional single-city conferences. The third objective was met by replacing traditional means of engagement, Q&A and lead-gen with an event app that provided a comprehensive set of features to meet these requirements. The thoughtfully curated topics and set of speakers drawn from the top ICT vendors were the final step in answering the most pertinent question: “How could we take Digital Transformation from being just a buzzword to being a reality that is understood and embraced by every person in the IT ecosystem?” Highlights of Digital Transformation Summit 2019 The event featured 25+ insightful sessions by

industry leaders and senior executives from Cisco, Microsoft, Dell, VMWare, Aruba, Hitachi Vantara, Red Hat, Acronis, APC, Symantec, Deskera, LogMeIn, Adobe, Ingram Micro and several others. Both days of the event concluded with a series of breakout sessions around Ingram Micro’s services for channel partners around channel financing, consulting, IT Asset Disposition and Infrastructure-as-aService. The grand finale and a fitting end to this two day technology extravaganza was the closing ceremony where the sweepstakes saw Royal Enfield bikes being given away to five lucky channel partners from across the country. Key Takeaways Digital Transformation Summit 2019 was an unforgettable event for the 3000 odd delegates who assembled all over the sub-continent, giving them a close look at the latest technologies that are disrupting conventional businesses models, as well as a view of Ingram Micro’s initiatives to help channel partners embrace the digital future. FORTINET THREAT LANDSCAPE REPORT HIGHLIGHTS CYBERCRIMINALS BYPASSING POPULAR PHISHING TACTICS ByNidhi Shail, nidhi@accentinfomedia.com

F

ortinet announced the findings of its latest quarterly Global Threat Landscape Report. The research reveals that cybercriminals continue to look for new attack opportunities throughout the digital attack surface. At the same time, they are shifting attack vectors such as targeting publicly available edge services to counter training and education efforts by organizations that address popular tactics such as phishing. The Threat Landscape Index remained relatively consistent during the quarter. There were fluctuations but no significant swings. Regardless, organizations should not let their guard down; instead the index demonstrates consistent and sustained cybercriminal activity. Shifting Tactics to Catch Organizations by Surprise: The majority of malware is delivered via email; therefore many organizations have been aggressively addressing phishing attacks with end user training and advanced email security tools. As a result, cybercriminals are expanding their ability to deliver malicious malware through other means. These include targeting publicly facing edge services such as web infrastructure, network communications protocols, as well as bypassing ad blocker tools to open attack vectors that don’t rely on traditional phishing tactics.

26 SME CHANNELS DECEMBER 2019

Maximizing Earning Potential: Following in the footsteps of the lucrative GandCrab ransomware, which was made available on the dark web as a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) solution, cybercriminal organizations are launching new services to expand their earning potential. FortiGuard Labs observed at least two significant ransomware families—Sodinokibi and Nemty—being deployed as RaaS solutions. These are potentially just the beginning of what could be a flood of similar services in the future. Refining Malware for Success: Expanding on these approaches, cybercriminals are also refining malware to evade detection and deliver increasingly sophisticated and malicious attacks, such as the evolution of the Emotet malware. This is a troubling development for organizations as cybercriminals increasingly use malware to drop other payloads on infected systems to maximize their opportunities for financial gain. Maximizing Opportunity with Older Vulnerabilities and Botnets: Targeting older, vulnerable systems that have not been properly secured is still an effective attack strategy. FortiGuard Labs discovered that cybercriminals target vulnerabilities twelve or more

years old more often than they target new attacks. And in fact, they target vulnerabilities from every subsequent year since then at the same rate as they do current vulnerabilities. Protecting for the unexpected: Broad, Integrated, and Automated Security. The expanding attack surface and shifting attack strategies of cybercriminals means organizations cannot afford to over-focus on a narrow set of threat trends. It is essential that organizations adopt a holistic approach to securing their distributed and networked environments. This requires the deployment of a security fabric that is broad, integrated, and automated. The latest Fortinet Threat Landscape Report is a quarterly view that represents the collective intelligence of FortiGuard Labs, drawn from Fortinet’s vast array of global sensors during Q3 of 2019. Research covers global and regional perspectives. Also included in the report is the Fortinet Threat Landscape Index (TLI), comprised of individual indices for three central and complementary aspects of that landscape, which are exploits, malware, and botnets, broken down by prevalence and volume in a given quarter.

Trend Micro’s 2020 Predictions

Trend Micro 2020 predictions report states that organizations will face a growing risk from their cloud and the supply chain. The growing popularity of cloud and DevOps environments will continue to drive business agility while exposing organizations, from enterprises to manufacturers, to third-party risk. Attackers will increasingly go after corporate data stored in the cloud via code injection attacks such as deserialization bugs, cross-site scripting and SQL injection. They will either target cloud

providers directly or compromise third-party libraries to do this. In fact, the increasing use of third-party code by organizations employing a DevOps culture will increase business risk in 2020 and beyond. Compromised container components and libraries used in serverless and microservices architectures will further broaden the enterprise attack surface, as traditional security practices struggle to keep up. “As we enter a new decade, organizations of all

industries and sizes will increasingly rely on third party software, open-source, and modern working practices to drive the digital innovation and growth they crave. Our threat experts predict that this fast growth and change will bring new risks of supply chain attacks. From the cloud layer all the way down to the home network, IT security leaders will need to reassess their cyber risk and protection strategy in 2020.” said Nilesh Jain, Vice President, Southeast Asia and India, Trend Micro.

About Matrix

Kumbh Mela is one of the most sacred pilgrimage festivals of India and is organized at a grand scale at Nasik, Haridwar, Ujjain and Prayag. As Kumbh Mela is celebrated after a period of 12 years in Nashik, 100 million people visit and therefore security is a major concern for the Government bodies.

Challenges Railway stations are highly congested areas. So, one of our biggest challenges was to install devices and set up a control room for monitoring railway station entrances, platforms and connecting bridges at the busy Nashik railway station. Moreover, a restricted bandwidth for the video surveillance solution made the entire process all the more challenging. And lastly, the authorities also wanted the storage of the entire 4 month

Solution Matrix used its unique Cascading feature to connect all the devices with sequencing for central monitoring on TVs in the control room to reduce the overall solution cost. Also, we provided 4-months scheduled backup of all cameras configured centrally for storing all the streams. Moreover, we completed the entire installation within 20 days with the help of highly skilled manpower.
