FOR MODI 2.0, OPPORTUNITIES TO PUT INDIAN JUGGERNAUT ON THE RIGHT TRACK IS EXPECTED. SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

With the Modi 2.0 into the power, the entire market is gung-ho about the country’s progress. In fact, the pundits are of opinion that it will have a spillover effect on the neighboring countries. There will be peace between the neighbors and there will be growth in the trade and commerce. But this government is shouldering a lot of expectation from the citizens - specially from the rural population and unemployed youth. With the 1.25 billion population at the back, the country needs enough sustenance to feed this mammoth population. Therefore, the priority is to support the farmers. Job creation has not been that great in the last 5 years and this time there must be a strong work around manufacturing or similar other projects where the job creation can be ramped up. We should not forget that we have a huge number of unskilled labor force, who need to be engaged somehow. Therefore, manufacturing would be a great thrust. As per Bloomberg report in just some one month of Modi 2.0 coming to power, global investors have invested nearly Rs 1,506.78 crore funding into Indian bonds. Everyone is aware that the Indian economy has not seen a spectacular grow in the past year. It was hovering over 6.6% in December quarter. This situation would remind this government of performing better and to outperform China in tthe next few quarters. The escalation of US-China trade war throws opportunities and challenges for India. At the same time, the government needs to figure out how to fizzle trade tension between India and US, which probably have been sorted out to a great extent. As per the latest news, India has identified 151 products that it can export to China instead of the US and benefit from the price advantage thrown up by the retaliatory higher duties slapped by the Xi Jinping government on US products amid the intensifying trade war between the two countries. China has slapped a higher duty of 5-25% on most chemicals coming from the US compared with the tariff of 2-7% levied on Indian chemicals. In this issue of SME Channels we have given a big space to Modi 2.0 to highlight industry expectation. Please read and send in your feedback.

Sunil Sharma, Managing Director – Sales, India & SAARC, Sophos breaks down the threat level, “The vulnerability is now fixed, which means that if you’re one of WhatsApp’s 1,500,000,000 users you need to go to the well and drink up the latest version. There’s a good chance your app’s already updated itself, but this is a serious vulnerability so we advise you to check all the same. WhatsApp isn’t exactly shouting about this. The Facebook Security page, WhatsApp’s company website and WhatsApp’s Twitter feed are bereft of information.”

IceWarp’s Unified Communication Solution for Fedbank Financial Services IceWarp has joined forces with a number of small, medium and enterprise level businesses to entirely change the concept of how their teams share information online. This all-in-one email collaboration platform has now effectively teamed up with Fedbank Financial Services Ltd (Fedfina), a subsidiary of the Federal Bank Ltd. to provide them with a Unified Communication Solution. Previously equipped with a non-updated version of on-cloud local vendor Email Server, Fedfina faced many challenges wherein archived data had to be taken offline within every 6 months. A constant requirement of migrating the existing data left no room for improvement in their then Mail Server. Absence of solutions for Collaboration and Communications; and Group Chat solutions for the broadcasting of messages brought in limitations leading to stunted growth of the business.

THE EVOLUTION OF PC:

FROM DESKTOP TO VDI The desktop is not evolving in isolation. Along with increasingly sophisticated hardware and networking technology, new concepts such as “cloud computing” and “Web operating systems” will continue to appear and influence the requirements and functionality of the desktop environment.

I

f one was to look at the evolution of the personal computers which were first commercially available in 1951, to the computer-dependent world of mobile and network embedded devices we use today, it can be described as breathtaking. This evolution can be attributed to major progresses through twisting paths, convergent trends which came together. In 1981, the personal computer (IBM PC) was made available. Before this invention, people were used to dedicated word processing machines or electric typewriters. Within a short span of a few years, the desktop PC had replaced office word processors and products like PCs or Macintosh became the household name. But for those who have seen the progress or know the industry from the inside can account for its slow, steady evolution that has included the integration of many different trends. The PC that we know today, the aspects of that were first being developed in 1964 at Stanford Research Institute, where the computer mouse and Windows-like operating system were first invented. The year 1976 saw the release of first full consumer computers like the Apple I and II,

the TRS-80, Atari 800, and Commodore Pet. The features that were incorporated in these experiments so to speak seem to have disappeared over the years but as history has a way of repeating itself, they were seen to reappear years even decades later in the PC. The base of the computer is a hardware layer consisting of a processor, which is connected to a variety of input, output, and memory devices (disks, screens, etc). The operating systems resides on top of this hardware layer allowing applications to interact with the lower level functions of the hardware layer. The entire environment of the desktop is contained and could actually be operated independently without any network connection to another computer. As desktop computing saw an increase in its usage, it grew more sophisticated through programs, operating systems and networking so the cost of the corporate computer system also grew. These issues have driven corporate IT leaders to hunt for more radical solutions for the desktop computer to control the costs, improve the quality of the computer experience and at the same time to increase the efficiency.

“WITH OVER 30 YEARS OF UNMATCHED HERITAGE IN COMPUTING AND TECHNOLOGY, DELL IS THE ONLY VENDOR THAT CAN PROVIDE END TO END SOLUTIONS IN VDI – STARTING FROM THE EDGE DEVICE RIGHT UP TO THE DATA CENTRE.” VIVEKANAND MANJERI, BRAND DIRECTOR, CLIENT SOLUTIONS GROUP, DELL INDIA.

This ever changing nature of this workforce has created evolutionary pressures on the desktop. This global and mobile workforce may work in one office on one day and on another continent in the next. Today, the workers demand access to their applications and data not only from a desk in some office, but on airplanes, on their mobile devices and at home. Also, groups want to collectively work on documents at the same time sitting from different parts of the world. As data become more electronic, obviously the concerns for security and privacy also arise. The current decentralised, distributed nature of the data makes it very difficult to track and control any accidental distribution. Because multiple versions of a document are present in different places, it becomes difficult to maintain consistency. Also because of the increase in the ubiquity of laptops, it has also led to the risks of data loss and security breach. This led to the invention of applications being used offline which was very appreciated for those who travel. Google, Microsoft, and Adobe have developed a platform to allow Rich Internet Applications (RIA) to work offline as well as online. These virtualized applications may be used later on over the internet when they are used, but they don’t have to be installed/ uninstalled each time and they also work with the data and documents that are stored centrally. So keeping in line with this theme, instead of virtual applications, virtual desktops were created. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is the virtualization technology that can hosts a desktop operating system on a centralized server in a data center. VDI is a variation on the client-server computing model, sometimes referred to as server-based computing. It was in the year 2006 that VDI began to emerge as an alternative to the server-based computing model used by Citriq and Microsoft Terminal Services. Today,

20 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

VMware, Citriq, and Microsoft all offer their own VDI platforms. The two main approaches to VDI is persistent and non-persistent. Persistent VDI provides each user with his/her own desktop image which can be customized and saved for future use much like any traditional physical desktop. Now with the non-persistent VDI, it provides a whole pool of uniform desktops that users can access when needed. The VDI allows users to bring their own computer to work and they have access to their own personal computing environment and can do the work on a locked down and secure corporate desktop VM. The risks of viruses and malwares can be isolated from the corporate desktop. The VDI is a desktop infrastructure approach in which any desktop operating system typically Microsoft Windows runs and is managed in a data center. The desktop image is delivered over a network to an endpoint device, which allows users to interact with the OS and the applications as if they were running locally. This offers a lot of benefits as very little actual computing takes places at the endpoint. This also lets the IT departments extend the lifespan of otherwise obsolete PCs by repurposing them as VDI clients. When the time comes for replacement, clients can buy cheaper, less powerful machines. Because most of the data stays in the data center and not in the endpoint, this causes a significant security upgrade. If a laptop that uses VDI gets stolen, no data can be retrieved because there is no data on the machine. This doesn’t mean that there are no drawbacks. If a desktop doesn’t have VDI its operating system, applications, data and settings are stored on the endpoint. There is no storage cost. But with persistent VDI, the OS, applications and everything for every single user must be stored

in the data center. Hence, the capacity needs and the cost required to maintain them can quickly go over the budget. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solutions help enterprises optimise IT spends without compromising on performance, security and manageability. It offers flexibility, improves productivity, and reduces unnecessary interruptions. Some of the top advantages of VDI over traditional PCs are: Increased Security & Compliance, Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), Improved manageability over cloud across multiple locations, and Lower Network Bandwidth requirement. For India, VDI is an excellent advancement as VDI provides low power consumption and remote access to end points in large cities. It also works very well in low bandwidth environments, which is something we often encounter in India outside Tier1 and2 cities. One of the top companies to provide VDI in India and globally is Dell. Dell’s VDI platform is comprehensive, cutting across hardware, software and services, which includes installation, support and training. This vast platform offers an array of opportunities for our channel partners to find sizeable and longterm business prospects across the portfolio. India is the 3rd largest Thin Clients Market globally, in terms of units, as per IDC. According to Dell, there are five key verticals that have use cases for highly secure, thin client based end points, namely banking and financial services, education, healthcare, government and BPO. A major reason for demand for VDI in these sectors are driven by regulatory requirements. VDI is also seeing emerging use cases in Retail & POS Displays as a remote content management solution. Vivekanand Manjeri, Brand Director, Client Solutions Group, Dell India, said “With over 30 years of unmatched heritage in computing and technology, Dell is the only vendor that can provide end to end solutions in VDI – starting from the edge device right up to the data centre. Dell’s VDI platform is comprehensive, cutting across hardware, software and services, which includes installation, support and training. This vast platform offers an array of opportunities for our channel partners to find sizeable and long-term business prospects across the portfolio. Our focus is on being part of high touch demand generation events and tele-calling, for partners specializing in the thin clients business. These events cover Dell’s VDI solutions overview and USPs, to help partners position Dell as a preferred partner for VDI. Our training programs are a mix of virtual webinars and face-to-face trainings to empower and enable partner sales force. In addition, we have Dell Client Specialists, who are available to provide technical guidance on demand for sales enablement.”

NARENDRA MODI 2.0

MODI 2.0: THE RETURN OF NARENDRA MODI With Modi coming back, who is an ardent advocate of India becoming more digital, the country will surely see new policies come to light which will help India achieve that goal. India is sorely in need of a government that will support new technologies being introduced and will provide the back work for the tech giants to get their innovations off ground.

N

arendra Modi’s government which is known for its pro-business image has helped lure foreign investors such as Amazon, Walmart and Mastercard investing billions of dollars in investments which also leads to ramping up the hiring process. India is also the biggest market by users for companies like Facebook Inc, and its subsidiary WhatsApp. In 2017, the Modi government came under fire for formulating policies that appeared to favour patriotic fever ahead of the elections. Global firms remained concerned about the lack of policy stability and this message had the global investors worried. After Modi’s win, many foreign companies in India hoped the government will avoid sudden policy changes on investment and regulation which cost them dearly and urged the government for an industry-wide consultation that permits time to prepare. Prem Watsa, Chairman of Canadian diversified investment firm Fairfax Financial said, “Protectionism concerns are small hurdles you have to go through however, there will be more business-friendly policies and more private enterprises coming into India.” Ever since Modi pushed for electronic payments in 2016, the global payments companies have benefitted immensely and are looking forward for more friendly policies from the government. Last year, however, firms such as Mastercard and Visa were asked to store more of their data in India to allow “unfettered supervisory access”, a change which prompted WhatsApp to delay plans for their payment service. Modi’s government which is also known to draft laws to clamp similar data norms on the entire sector has a lot riding on the technology sector. But abrupt changes, which are now common for Modi government, to rules on foreign investment in e-commerce has stoked an alarm at firms such as Amazon which saw its operations briefly

24 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

disrupted back in February. Similarly, months after, Walmart also faced disruptions after it had invested $16 billion in Flipkart. ‘Digital India’ catch-phrase which has been resounding in the country for the past five years has certainly caught the attention of business in India and overseas, which also helps to highlight the technological investment which can be made in the Indian subcontinent. Executives belief that the coming five years should see policies being effectively implemented and the hopes for technology infusing into governance should also materialise. The first term of Modi’s government saw the plans materialise for India to become a global technological hub. The country also embraced foreign investment which resulted in a vibrant technology sector characterised by international and Indian players which also included small and medium enterprises. But this is now all at stake. In the final year of his first term, the Prime Minister made moves which saw foreign companies being hesitant to invest in the country. Now that the government is back for its second term, policy makers should bear in mind the technological advancement pace which India had started on. A new area of concern was provided by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY’s) draft for cross-sector data protection bill, which some argue is harsher than EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which involves risks for deterring investment, innovation without making the data safe. The bill talks about excessive restrictions on cross-border data flows, limited grounds for data processing, criminal liability, huge government powers to use personal data and much more. But if one were to compare this bill with the Department of Promotion and Internal Trade’s (DPIIT’S) draft regarding the e-commerce policy which talks

about data protection obligations and is also directly inconsistent with the MeitY’s draft. The draft e-commerce policy made by DPIIT also suggests that successful companies should share their data with Indian companies in order for them to grow.

NARENDRA MODI 2.0

And yet, India continues to grow. With the country voting again for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come back for a second term, the technology and startup sectors are anticipating quick implementations of policies which were in sync with the ‘Digital India’ mandate, as com-

ments from several chief executives of business and startups operating in the country show. Suman Reddy, MD, Pegasystems India, said, “The government, through a range of forward-looking policies has a track record being a catalyst to the IT sector in India. This growth

has, in turn increased the industry’s share in the country’s GDP. The results give us hope that the groundwork laid during the previous regime will translate to an improved policy environment and faster industry growth over the next 5 years. Every player in the industry is looking to operate in a

competitive environment, find market opportunities to grow, and create jobs. Companies have seen the fruits of a favorable business climate created and are working towards the united goal of creating a trillion dollars of economic value through the digital economy by 2025. They also look forward to adequate levels of protection to maintain India’s competitive advantage over other regional tech hubs and respect the interest of consumers using their services. What we look forward to from the next phase of India’s governance: l Extend the success of various initiatives and policies already introduced, like Digital India and Startup India. l A balanced interests of the customers and enterprises, in terms of data governance, data storage, support for startups in emerging technologies. l Further clarity on AI innovation focus by the government through regulations and initiatives as the global AI race heats up. l Fair operating environment for startups and SMEs to scale, expand globally, and raise investments. l Improving clarity around key regulations necessary for large tech centres to operate, expand and contribute to the national economy.” Kishan Jain, Director, Goldmedal Electricals said “The rapid proliferation of new technologies such as internet of things, artificial intelligence, connected devices & home automation, have provided FMEG companies tremendous opportunities to grow, flourish and expand into newer industry segments. Additionally, the past few years have seen the Government of India having a keen focus on the promotion of energy efficient solutions such as LED lighting. With the current Government all set for a second term in office, we hope that this trend continues as it would give further fillip not only to the manufacture of such products but also to the Government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Smart Cities’ initiative.” Jitendra Chaturvedi, Director and Cofounder, Batooni Mobile Advertising said, “The government had started smoothening the tax issues in startup funding. Continuation of the regime will hopefully hasten the change in the procedures and laws helping startup funding. BJP’s known penchant for advertising is very good news for adtech start-ups.” Bhavin Turakhia, CEO, Zeta & Flock says, “In the last four years, Indian B2B startups have more than tripled. Our country is now taking giant strides towards becoming one of the fastest growing startup hubs globally. To make this a reality and accelerate their growth, the new Gov-

26 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

ernment of India must put in place measures such as training hubs for entrepreneurs across India to ease flow of capital, regulatory compliance and more. Further, these hubs must act as one-stop knowledge, research and development centers so that startups can focus more on innovation and less on processes. Thus, acting as a catalyst or emerging startups across sectors.” Satyam Kumar, CEO & Co-Founder, LoanTap Financial Technologies Pvt. Ltd says, “Currently, a start-up needs to follow number of compliance laid down by various regulatory bodies as well as there is a knowledge gap because of multiple points of contact. While they are definitely necessary, they are onerous and costly to comply with. Compliance is expected with regards to Labour Law, MSME Registration, Investment, MCA Compliance as well as ones related to individual sectors. There should also be consideration on hefty penalty in cases of non-compliance.Expectation from Government is to make process simpler to comply with – A single clearance window – which ensures end to end solution or procedure to be followed by a start-up that enables pro-active compliance as well as helps to avoid unnecessary costs.” Javed Tapia, Founder, Slonkit says, “The current government has given a fillip to startups with initiatives such as Start-Up India which enables self-certification, rebate in filing patents, income tax exemptions, easier public procurement norms etc. I think the new government should further enhance the vibrant start-up ecosystem wherein startups can collaborate seamlessly and share knowledge and technical expertise. This will help India to leverage it’s entrepreneurial potential and become a hotbed of unicorn start-ups across different sectors.” Ankur Pahwa, Partner and National Leader – E-Commerce and Consumer Internet, EY India, said, “As the new government steps-in, among key policy interventions, the e-commerce policy needs some urgent attention as it can propel investments, job and wealth creation to boost overall economic growth. The e-commerce policy also need to take into account the view of impacted stakeholders and provide sufficient runway for implementation. Furthermore, incentives to companies exploring ‘deep-tech’ such as AI, ML, IoT, etc., will bring in more efficiency in the system and ultimately improving customer experiences. India remains the world’s second largest start-up nation and clearly the government has had the right intent to boost start-ups in the country to foster innovation and job creation, while protecting both investors and entrepreneurs. While measures have been taken

to provide relaxation from Angel Tax, there are still some unfulfilled expectations linked to its simplification when looked at from a long-term lens. More attention is needed to protect entrepreneurs; at the same time enable promoters and investors to raise capital through differential voting rights. While the government has made considerable and commendable headway in ease of doing business, further steps linked to easing of norms will fuel the start-up ecosystem.” K R Naik, Chairman, DIGISOL Systems Ltd., said, “We have seen enormous growth opportunities in the past five years with the introduction of schemes like ‘Make In India’, ‘Digital India’ and ‘Smart Cities’. With the continuation of the regime, we hope to see a new wave of transformation in the IT Networking Industry. We are excited about the opportunities coming in the next few years as supportive government regulations will help accelerate the business growth and would support companies like us who have been manufacturing products in India.” Keshab Panda, CEO & Managing Director, L&T Technology Services said, “This election is a victory for Indian democracy and the people’s mandate. A stable and clear majority is always beneficial to business and international trade and commerce. As India builds up on its global position of being a leader in new-age innovations, it is the right time to leverage the country’s unique capabilities to serve as a best-in-class ER&D services destination. We can expect to see growing demand for technology expertise in several critical areas such as smart cities, connected healthcare and Electric Vehicle technologies, backed by the Government’s active policy framework. We foresee technology companies coming out with digital engineering solutions catering to all of these in the coming years.” There is hope that the new government will get back on the track to hasten the adoption of policies for digitization of the country. The expectation is that this will encourage the government to be more transparent and to build India into a strong ecosystem in which technology driven businesses are thriving. The talk around technology has been critical for the past two years in the country as the government is drafting bills which will lead to control of Internet content, store critical date within the country. As policymakers consider their next steps on these and other technological issues, they should opt for a reasonable approach that meets valid regulatory objectives which ensuring that investment and innovation are flourishing.

AWS PARTNERS TALK ABOUT THE INTRICACIES OF THE PARTNERSHIP Amazon Web Services, one of the large cloud computing companies provides on-demand cloud computing to companies, governments, and individuals. You can get it on a payas-you-go service. These cloud computing services provide an abstract technical infrastructure and computing web platform. SME Channels sat down to talk with three of AWS’ partners operating in India to understand the dynamics of the partnerships.

A

mazon started AWS in 2002. During its early stages AWS offered only disparate tools and services. A year later, the concept of AWS was rebranded which included plans for retail computing infrastructure which was going to be completely standardised, automated, and would rely exclusively on web services. In late 2004, the first AWS service was launched for public usage. According to the data in 2017, AWS was providing more than 90 services with a wide range palette

including computing, storage, networking, database, analytics, application services, deployment, management, mobile, developer tools and Internet of Things. Among the services offered, the most popular ones are Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The offerings of AWS can be accessed over HTTP, using REST architectural style and SOAP protocol. The reason why AWS is a popular service platform is because it offers a way of obtaining large scale computing capacity

quickly and cheaply rather than building an actual physical server farm. The services are billed as per usage and each service measures usage are done in a different way. By 2017, AWS owned an approximate 34% of all cloud (IaaS, PaaS) while the next three competitors Microsoft, Google and IBM have 11%, 6%, and 8% respectively. In 2017, Amazon reported the annual revenue of AWS to be $17.46 billion. Towards the end of 2018, it had grown to $25.65 billion. By 2019, AWS has operations in 20 different geographical regions.

ANOOP NAMBIAR, PARTNER- DELOITTE.

“GLOBALLY, DELOITTE AND AWS HAVE A VERY STRONG RELATIONSHIP.” Can you tell us about Deloitte? Mr. Anoop Nambiar - Deloitte is the largest professional services organization in the world. We are a consulting firm, as in what we do is we actually go to the market as an investment consultant and use technology to provide that. So we are in this business for two things, the technology is used as an enabler and that’s where the cloud factor comes into play. Like with any new technology when it first comes out, people find it a struggle to understand what the real benefits are and in this case, what is the real ROI and so on. So I believe things will actually settle down, I wouldn’t say specifically but it will settle down where cloud is now being leveraged in the right way. So if you look around the modern trend is that every organization is going into digital transformation, digital journey. And when I say digital, what we believe is that core of digital is three things, data, analytics and cloud. We hear about private cloud, hybrid cloud, and public cloud. What do you think about them being consumed by customers from the market trend point of view? ee, public cloud like in AWS or Azure, that’s the largest market segment. But if you look at the private firms it was always there. What was really cloud in the past if you have got five servers and you have put five applications on top of it, you have always found that one server has leveraged more and other servers less and so on. Cloud is nothing but you actually taking a virtual environment and leveraging all the servers and

28 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

making it available. So a lot of organizations have their own private cloud where they provide this service. So I think the application of used cases is different for each of them. What happens in public clouds, digital innovative companies and so on they have their appetite and their need for going into the public space, kind of carving out their own areas and servicing the customers, but there could be organizations using private clouds because applications of used cases are very specific to them. So I wouldn’t say one is superior to the other, it is all what your requirement is and what is it you are trying to do. It is not just one single provider in a single type of cloud because; environment based on what application is there, all those can be used cases again. No one can answer what is the best way, it is what is working and what is not working. So to ask from an Indian context, how do you think the Indian enterprises will leverage the cloud? What do you think will be the change in the future? So Indian market is actually a different market if you take it as a very developed nation, and developed market. Indian market has different categories of customers as we see it. If you look at any large organization like global organizations they all have their own in-house offices in India, then you have Indian based multinationals who actually are headquartered here but their offices are around the world, then you have pure play Indian companies, the promoter led companies. So this is the demographics here. And a lot of the cloud activities for the first category happens

because it is already decided where it is going to be and they are actually leveraging India based capability to execute on that. India based multinationals make the call here and they actually spread it out. So all these markets have different scenarios, different expectation/target where they are going to be. Look at a global organization with their strategy already in place, they are already matured into the journey and India has been providing the capability to sustain that journey. But if you look at the modern cloud business, India actually is one area, one country where there is so much of folks, like companies like AWS, so many customers in that particular segment where they are digitally born. So the trend depends on which industry segment you are talking about. I feel India typically has a tendency where we skip generations; we actually don’t have to go through the evolutions. Indian market is actually going to grow much bigger. I feel folks like AWS will be a large player in them. Do you think 5G is near? Once 5G comes into the scenario will it change because of the connectivity? I will not be able to comment on 5G but at the same time I think the connectivity, if you look at what it was last the connectivity in India actually of course there are more and more players coming into the mix, there are organizations investing heavily into the infrastructure and capability structure. So yes in any digital business you need good connectivity and infrastructure support and India is actually going in that direc-

PARTNER CORNER

tion that’s what I feel. Since AWS and Deloitte have been partners for a long time, can you shed some light on the global relationship you have? And how you plan to carry it forward to India? So globally Deloitte and AWS have a very strong relationship, very protective relationship. And we are the top system integrators for AWS. We, our goal this year we want to bring global success to India, and we started with the partnership last year and we actually are progressing well. And we are leveraging our success from the global market place as well as the solutions we deliver for those clients over there, bring it to India and kind of expand the market like that. What are the joint activities that you do with AWS? Joint activities we do, if I can categorize them into three, they are actually two categories I would put them into, we look at the buyers, so there are three type of buyers you know business transformation buyer, we have regulatory and security buyer and we have a technology transformation buyer. So across these three the way we are looking at it right now is, we are trying to get on the cloud journey, the strategy and the roadmap on that,

and we create analytic capabilities for them on cloud. And third is help them migrate their applications and data, not necessarily in the same order because for them to be able to migrate to cloud, how the applications goes to cloud, where they want to be, whether it is hosting or whether it is re-platforming or even recreating cloud. And also how do we move the data on to cloud so that it is available for that ecosystem and so on. There are a lot of talks around AI which is going to change everything. It is dominant for every industry. What is the growth of AI space and if you could tell us about block chain too? So AI, artificial intelligence the way it has been evolving, it has different facets whether we started with analytics or cognitive, cognitive is another area which everybody is into now, robotics is coming in. Has AI evolved fully in leveraging or helping the industry? I feel there is a lot more to be driven there. Because true artificial intelligence of mimicking a human I think we still have a long way to go there, but we are reaching there in steps right now. It is more around the machine learning, deep learning and so on. We are actually getting capabilities which are, some aspects of that, I think there is a lot more to be done and a

lot of organizations they have kind of migrated from the POC stage to actual applications. We see a lot more coming and they are coming with advent of a lot more capabilities offered by people like AWS. That is going to accelerate the journey that’s what I feel. India is a huge market. What are the challenges for Deloitte now along with AWS? And what are the challenges that Deloitte wants to mitigate this year? So our goal is to be AWS’s framework partner in India. So that means we want to be, going to market along with AWS and seen as their trusted partner, that’s the work side of it of where we want to go with. The other side, the challenge wise I would say it is more around awareness still. So it is really a point about what people see cloud as, have they completely understood it. Are they able to understand where does cloud play into their larger goal and ambitions. So the key challenge and the opportunity would be that how can we join with AWS and articulate that usage as well as the vision to our clients and make them understand and aware about that, what is the opportunities lying here, how they can leverage what is available to them and leapfrog in their journey. I wouldn’t really call it as a challenge, I would say it is an opportunity.

PARTNER CORNER

PIYUSH KUMAR, PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, CAPILLARY TECHNOLOGIES.

“THE ADVANTAGE THAT WE GET IS THE HIGH AVAILABILITY. “ Can you tell us about Capillary? Capillary Technologies- So Capillary is a SaaS Multi Channel Service provider. We have products which are targeted towards retailers and branched to engage with their customers. There are multiple ways that we enable brands to engage with their customers which includes online commerce, online engagements, offline commerce through offline stores, and engagements in offline stores which is outside of plain transactions and, then we are also using a lot of AI and machine learning techniques to deepen the customer understanding and embed all of that. So just to give you an example, we have products which can enable click stream online, click steam type behavior tracking in offline stores, using image processing, video processing etc, and we are trying to figure out how many visitors to our stores, what demographics do they belong to, what is the heat map of the store in terms of how are they travelling and so on. How are you leveraging AWS? Capillary Technologies- Our entire software runs on top of AWS platform. And we are deployed in multiple regions. So we are deployed in US, Europe, South East Asia, India and China. That helps us geographically bind customers closer to their locations. We run our entire data center in a private cloud inside AWS in a VPC and then we use a lot of infrastructural service components from AWS and use a lot of platforms as a service component from AWS. Plus, we also leverage lot of their IOT core,

30 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

Amazon Rekognition and so on in our AIE spaces as well. What are the advantages for AWS? Capillary Technologies- One of the things is that only from a scale point of view whenever there has been a need going up and down on scale is a variable cost for us. That doesn’t become a fixed cost component anytime into our offering. That also helps us pass on some of those in terms of our cost offering to the customers at the prices that we price it to the customers. The other advantage that we get is the high availability that AWS as a platform provides. Our systems are available 99.98% and that is backed a lot by AWS being highly available. That availability helps our customers in terms of being able to process their customers anytime round the clock of the day. Then the other thing that happens is that it has helped us be a lot more agile. So at a lot of times we are able to leverage a lot of components that are built in by AWS, use them to quickly build products and launch it to the market. So when we build products and launch to the market there are times that they work as it is, there are times that they need tweaks but the cycles are shorter in terms of the time at which we are able to take it to the market. We have also been able to leverage a lot of innovations that AWS has done in terms of its newer machine type, spot instances, so a lot of those have helped us reduce our costs. Since last 3 years we have been able to increase the overall usage of AWS but reduce our costs by about 50%

as a function of our overall cost. So a lot of this has been backed by the newer technology, the newer pricing models, etc that AWS is bringing out. Are you mostly dealing with a lot of AI applications and IoTs? Capillary Technologies- Yes and also a lot of big data type also as a lot of data generated flows into the system so we currently store a few hundreds of terabytes of data and we do process them to bring out insights so there is a full-fledged insights that we run on AWS. So from that scalability point of view or rather labor point of view, Capillary is leveraging strongly? Capillary Technologies- So lot of heavy-duty data computation happens by launching a lot of spot enhances which do heavy duty computation, puts that into cache stores and then those servers go away. So we don’t have to, these are lot of servers that get launched. They do the processing and then go away. So there is a lot of benefit in terms of the cost optimization around that and the scale at which we are so if we have onboard 3 new brands who are let’s say large retailers we don’t have to worry about how soon can we provision hardware for them to be able to onboard it. It’s elastic so we can onboard them today and from tomorrow onwards the data computations can start. What are the challenges that

PARTNER CORNER

you are facing in India? Capillary Technologies- One of them in terms of challenges is that there are customers of different sizes. We have customers who have large enterprises, and we have customer who are very small medium scale customers. If you just scale up your software and code and product you could get bloated and become heavy which could be too challenging and too daunting for small and medium size businesses to be able to use. What we have done is that product is segregated accordingly and the cost that the smaller one’s bear are proportional to their usage. So the cost of our products is priced to the extent that which you use it, so a large retailer would be using it at larger volumes, larger number of stores, larger transactions but still the fixed costs goes slightly higher for the small and medium sized. So from our product packaging point of view, etc, is something we need to work on a little bit there. The other thing that is happening in India in the last year or so is a lot of regulations around data, where the data is getting stored, where the data privacy has to be taken into account and that is why we have a Mumbai region hub, the customers who are getting affected by that concern we have an option to onboard them in Mumbai region

rather than an outside region. What are the advantages of AWS? Capillary Technologies- So from an advantage point of view, 3 or 4 things stand out quite clearly from the way we operate and from the way we use it. One of them is the high availability of its infrastructure, the reliability, and so on because we are being able to guarantee those kinds of availability to our customers. So as I said earlier 99.98% is our availability of the systems and that is a huge benefit to the customers where they just know that the software is up there in the cloud and just runs and works. The other advantage has been around the cost benefit that we have been able to get. So I mean we have been able to scale up our operations quite a bit but for a software SaaS company your cost as a fraction of your customer base and revenue should keep going down. So we have been able to cut down on that cost quite a bit and that has been backed by some of the innovations that have come from AWS. Like spot enhances have been brought in by them, new age machines have been brought in. The other thing is that their platform APIs are very standard, very scalable and they kind of cater to

all your needs. So what we have been able to do is that our entire infrastructure is built as a code that gives us a lot of agility in terms of being able to scale up, in being able to spawn new clusters. And that is built by code because AWS has it’s platform API which allow you to do all of that. What are the shortcomings AWS would develop in the future to accommodate your needs? And, what are the future plans with AWS? Capillary Technologies- More than shortcomings what I will say is that the things that we are looking forward to is where will look for a lot of products from AWS to help us grow faster will be in that AI and machine learning status. So we are going to do lot of smart store enablement and products, image processing, video processing which are difficult tasks. This will require a lot of text reading, like your OCR tech readers. So that’s the space where the retailers are seeing a lot of value. There is a lot of big opportunity sitting in there and because we are on the AWS platform in an integrated environment it works better for us if our needs are met on that in terms of those components from AWS.

“THE ADVANTAGE OF WORKING WITH AWS IS THAT THEY ARE ALREADY THINKING IN THE FUTURE DIRECTION. “ What’s happening in DXC? There are a lot of things happening at DXC. We’re growing in India and we are growing in terms of the way we have decided to, which of course is aligned to our customers who want to grow and that’s the significant impact we’re having. We’re growing because customers are growing and we’re growing in the right areas that the customers want services. Thus, we have had good growth.

We have looked at our business in two ways, since DXC got created 1st April 2017. So two iconic companies came together, with a lot of previous experience and that experience really is helping us look at how to bring the scale for our customers. Most of our customers have grown with us actually and we are crossing border mergers and acquisitions, integration, legacy environment, and modernization.

PARTNER CORNER

The world is changing, partners are changing, the modes of interaction are changing, the rules of the game are changing and in the context of AWS, the way computers provided the mindset has changed totally. What was, a POC one year ago or one and a half years ago, is a done thing, no questions. Now it’s just about applicability and those are fundamental. I think the market has changed in terms of people wanting to scale fast, whether it is a small scale industry, whether it is medium, or whether it is enterprise. Everybody has realized that the new platforms enable scalability. So either you’re getting onto somebody’s platform or conceptualizing a new platform, and whoever’s business model clicks and the monetization clicks, they really take a vertical takeoff. So there’s a B2C expectation on B2B markets, in terms of response, quality, ability to get your answers and I think that change has never been so much as I see it today.

Do you think that the current geopolitical situation, the way it is turning out between India and China is giving advantages to India from the industrial perspective? Will we see manufacturing opportunities in health care? We operate both in India and outside. And the opportunities and challenges they are a part of your natural business cycle which means two years down the line there will be a challenge I will have to face some crisis in Iran, question that you’re asking on is China, there could be ramifications in India. But what does it mean to me as a provider to Indian companies or what does it mean, to an Indian company? If you are aware, there’s always an opportunity and solving a problem for your client is the most important thing for us. Whether it is pure growth, or it is a response to any geopolitical situation, for companies such as ours, an AWS and other people, that the more important thing really is that how do we have an appropriate response mechanism? It could be cost, it could be revenue, it could be people, it could be skill sets, it’s being able to address those needs appropriately is how I look at it. There will be changes, there will be environmental changes and other changes every year. So it’s about the people you work with the companies that you work with, are you listening to them deeply enough to understand their pulse and response, and I think that’s what how we really look at the business.

32 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2019

So, what are the areas that you are focusing or concentrating? You need to respond to a customer very fast, be very agile and have the appropriate response. So, we’ve understood, and we’ve simplified the organization, we must sell, build and deliver. And there are groups of people who sell, there are group of people who build, solutions, outcomes, IT; and there are groups of people who deliver. That’s our organization structure. To be relevant in India, what we have done in addition is - introduced industry conversations, which means the country is divided into two parts. One is banking, insurance and basically financial services, communication and media. And the other half is manufacturing, distribution, life sciences and healthcare. This actually answers some of your questions that how do you address the opportunities you see in the market, that is when people who are aware of the context like if you’re in health care, when Ayushman Bharat discussion happens it rings a bell, and you have an IP set, which is locally available, which we will bring to the customer. So we’re doing basically is that the number of large hospital, hospital chains in India, we’re working with, regulatory compliance solutions with a couple of pharma companies we are working in fact, with the CSC DXC measure, there’s a significant proportion of the insurance industry which runs on our IP. Some of the steel that goes into your cars, our systems have helped really run that environment, some of the cars, or some of the scooters, you have bought some of the motorcycles all run on our system. So, I think we are well structured.

What is the beginning of this relationship? Which year did you start legacy? Both companies had relationship even prior to the merger, butthere has been a very defined and clear approach that we will work with partners. So as far as DXC is concerned, from day one, we have been very clear that AWS is a key partner. It’s very strategic in nature, and we’ve identified them to be a part of our digital core. Because if you look at any organization, there are legacy environments, there arenew environments that are getting created so that you can respond to the requirements, the upper scale requirements, you can optimize the old environment, you can emerge, you can rationalize, but you can’t always get rid of it. Yet you can radically still transform the computer and when you transform the com-

puter and bring the legacy also on to that and through APIs and you build a new platform, which merges seamlessly with the legacy environment you create the possibility for as I’ve mentioned earlier data fluidity, which is required for analytics. And that AWS seem to be one of the best partners to play with, because there was a distinct shift away from pure boxes. And I think both companies understood that there’s a world that’s changing out there. Because we talk about digital now, we talked about digital last year, but the wave really happened over the past two years. So, if I have to be digital at scale, I need to have a partner ecosystem who actually can and is capable of working at that scale. And that’s where AWS form to be a natural partner.

What is your take on the future of the industry? The world is changing in ways that is difficult to predict and if I were to state a trend, I would be a fortune driver. So, just in a lighter note but these are computing mechanisms, which logically makes a lot of sense. Edge computing, you get solutions, which are also conquering the network costs associated with edge computing. Edge computing has its own latency in response times while they cater to response times that blip of a second when connectivity is not there that’s what they address it. So there isn’t at this point, a single answer you might know, in terms of what the best architecture, but the good thing is, the good thing is that companies such as ours and AWS, we have an early view of the future, in terms of the vision. There are four possible trends that can happen whether it is edge computing or whether it is any other technology. And we do assessments in terms of which direction to go forward in. So if you really look at it, and the architecture that AWS also talks about, also addresses some of the edge, right, and the sensors. Now, will that be there five years from now? Maybe yes maybe no. But the advantage of working with AWS, they’re already thinking in this direction and they’ve got architectures to address that. But if the technology changes, because you’re with a partner like AWS and DXC, your risk is minimized. So, every new technology brings risks, the challenge is, who do you partner with so that you have a risk reduced path to change because you’ll never have the right answer in this digital world.

REASON YOU SHOULD CONSIDER UPGRADING TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF WI-FI ROUTER A recent report revealed that there are around 3.48 billion Internet users around the world. It indicates that over 41 percent of the world’s population is interconnected through via Internet. Installations of Wi-Fi hotspots and increasing usage of smartphones in rural and remote areas have greatly contributed in bridging the gap of connectivity. MARTHESH NAGENDRA, Country Manager - India & SAARC, NETGEAR.

PROFILE Today, the existing infrastructure is bottlenecked with limited Wi-Fi speeds and to boost up the existing speed, we are introduced to the idea of a much better and faster wireless internet through Wi-Fi 6. The next generation of Wi-Fi technology isn’t just about a simple boost in speed and secure transmission. Its impact will be more nuanced, and we are likely to see its benefits more and more over time.

In today’s age and time, Internet plays a major role in one’s everyday life. Our country is moving forward towards Digitization and has proven to be a front runner when it comes to Internet users and its usability. Internet has revolutionized the way we live and has made us realize the significance of being connected; Wi-Fi thus comes as one of the key driving factors responsible for digitizing India. India currently stands as the second-largest telecommunications market in the world and is constantly rising. With such unprecedented access to Internet, a larger portion of the population is becoming a part of the internet-world regularly. The numbers however, have changed dramatically over the years, around 200 million Indians regularly use social media, and in the last year alone, more than 200 million Indians took to mobile banking and digital payments. Today, the existing infrastructure is receiving backlash due to limited Wi-Fi speeds and to boost up the existing speed, we are introduced to the idea of a much better and faster wireless Internet through Wi-Fi 6. The Wi-Fi 6 delivers super-fast speed along with better coverage and, more importantly, has the power and capacity to handle the dozens of devices in the typical congested smart home Marthesh Nagendra, Country Manager - India & SAARC, NETGEAR comments, “Today, the existing infrastructure is bottlenecked with limited Wi-Fi speeds and to boost up the existing speed, we are introduced to the idea of a much better and faster wireless internet through Wi-Fi 6. The next generation of Wi-Fi technology isn’t just about a simple boost in speed and secure transmission. Its impact will be more nuanced, and we are likely to see its benefits more and more over time.” What is Wi-Fi 6? Designed to increase network capacity and improve the performance of your home network, Wi-Fi

6 (802.11ax) is the latest generation of Wi-Fi technology. It will empower you with faster Wi-Fi speeds with reliable connections, so you can enjoy buffer-free streaming, faster downloads, and add more smart home devices without slowing down your Internet experience. To deliver the fastest Wi-Fi to all your connected devices of today and tomorrow, here are the reasons why your next router should be a Wi-Fi 6 router. Wi-Fi 6 provides the highest level of performance in busy multi-device households The newest Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi 6, builds on the already great Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) technology. While Wi-Fi 5 brought gigabit speeds to our Wi-Fi connections, it falls short on delivering the best Wi-Fi experience as the smart home gets smarter with more devices on the network. Wi-Fi 6 uses orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), a key feature which increases overall network efficiency to allow several devices with various bandwidth requirements to connect to your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi 6 provides the fastest real-world speeds and range In Wi-Fi technology, each frequency band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) is made of component streams. It is on these streams that our Wi-Fi data travels. Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 carry the highest number of streams, thus allowing for gigabit Wi-Fi speeds. Wi-Fi 6 increases the number of streams to a new high of 12 across the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, whereas Wi-Fi 5 has a limit of 8 in a dual-band configuration. This increase of streams provides higher connection speed, and your client devices have more paths to communicate with your Wi-Fi router. NERI ZIN VP, SALES CYBERBIT

CYBERBIT PLANS TO PROVIDE INDIAN CYBERSECURITY THE MUCH NEEDED PUSH. Cyberbit maybe new to the Indian market, but it is already making its mark on the huge untapped cybersecurity niche market here. Nero Zin, VP, Sales, Cyberbit and Rakesh Kharwal, Managing Director-India/South Asia & ASEAN, Cyberbit talk about Cyberbit’s plan to conquer the Indian market.

Indian as a market is surely becoming lucrative for the global hackers as the country is embarking on high growth activities. Especially the heavy industrials, which are our mascots of growth are facing unique cybersecurity challenges, given their distributed, decentralized governance structures and large operational technology (OT) environment—an environment that does not lend itself readily to traditional cybersecurity controls. Furthermore, many heavy industrials have invested in becoming “cyber mature,” as have other at-risk industries, such as financial services and healthcare. The investment gap has left most heavy industrials insufficiently prepared for the mounting threats. Several factors underlie the growing threat landscape for the heavy industrial sector. One is the rise in geopolitical tensions, which has led to attacks targeting critical national infrastructure. Heavy industrials can become collateral damage in broader attacks even when they are not the target, given IT security gaps and OT networks connected to IT networks through new technologies. Obviously, these threats have become a major concern for top managers, boards and national government bodies. Cyberbit, a spinoff of a big NASDAQ traded

company is the world leading provider of cyber range training and simulation platforms, and the only provider of detection, response, automation and orchestration products across both IT and OT networks. The company has been around for about four years. It mainly focus on defence. Cyberbit also focus on Asia Pacific and use I.T. hub both for the internal market but also for the international market. Also, it observes great potential in India both for the financial sector which is huge but also for other enterprises and its security service providers and global size. Cyberbit is a small channel oriented company facilitating its business through channels. The company have more than 40 platforms already spread globally, 40 range and different separate facilities in India. It has just started two facilities in India. “Cybersecurity awareness in India is at a very high level. The people know what they are talking about. You don’t have to explain unique and niche products.”- Nero Zin, VP, Sales, Cyberbit. The number one bottleneck for cybersecurity organizations today are the people. Organizations are facing a massive shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals. Understaffed teams repeatedly fail to manage thousands of incidents,

using dozens of tools, across a converging IT OT and IoT attack surface. Cyberbit’s mission is to empower cybersecurity teams and help organizations regain the upper hand, by multiplying the impact of their existing workforce: significantly improving training; automating and simplifying security operations, and consolidating detection visibility and response across IT and OT networks. Cyberbit’s portfolio is based on battle-proven technologies deployed in government and military organizations and made available to the commercial market since 2015. It includes: Cyberbit Range: The world-leading cyber range platform for training Blue and Red teams in hyper-realistic simulated scenarios; SCADAShield: ICS/SCADA visibility, cybersecurity and continuity for critical infrastructure networks; SOC 3D: Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR); and EDR: Endpoint Detection and Response for detecting evasive threats. According to Nero, the amount of the multiple opportunities in India and the level of sophistication and the maturity of the local market in comparison to other markets cannot be compared.

“CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS IN INDIA IS AT A VERY HIGH LEVEL. THE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO EXPLAIN UNIQUE AND NICHE PRODUCTS.”

Cyberbit looks at India as a potential for local consumption which is mainly BFSI, government and enterprises. What it gives India is a breach to the international market. A lot of global SI’s are from India and their products and their solutions outside of India both for implementation abroad US and Europe. Cyberbit is building the power in India and probably will move some resources too for good with the Indian local adaptation of our products. According to Nero, the market in India is aimed on quantities . It gives entrepreneurs company a great opportunity to leverage their ability and their unique way of doing business work with Indian businesses. Cyberbit’s idea and the unique selling points on the cyber range is the ability to simulate the environment as native as possible. It simulates the traffic, the security tools that the SOC operator is using. Also, it owns the state of the art attack generator that actually simulates real attacks like they’re happening all over the world. Cyberbit’s current approach includes channelling partners because it a channel oriented company and is facilitating its business through channels. Some of that is for its very high touch niche products. Cyberbit is touching four major products.

The first product is aimed for skills elevation. It has developed a platform, the cyber range. It’s a platform that actually simulates the security operations center of the organization and let people train in the organization on the real condition that has actually been simulated for them. Cyberbit has an another platform, the soft 3D which is from a family product that’s called SOAR. The intention of the product is to actually automate as much activities as possible in your security operation center to create efficiency to save time and money after work and to just operate activities in a more coherent way with a lot of playbooks and connections to other security tools and also automate those activities. The third product of Cyberbit includes the EDR Endpoint Detection and Response. This product is the most common one. It penetrates into the Indian market with the financial sector. The company also provides two alternatives, one is implementation in-house. This is according to the RBI regulation and also we are providing the possibility for many services to do an EPR as a service. We deploy the solution with the customer. They can manage it on their own. The last product is a product which is aimed for the critical infrastructure namely airports, power generation, power transmission, oil, and gas. It has

developed a product which secures those kinds of networks and provide a lot of visibility to their operation. So these are the four elements that Cyberbit is engaging in. Cyberbit is not into SOC operations. Rather, it provides products that will allow SOC operation to be better, faster, operating more and is cost effective. According to Rakesh Kharwal Managing Director-India/South Asia & ASEAN, Cyberbit, the good thing about the company’s product is that a lot of services are wrapped around it and it keeps innovating its products. According to Nero Zin, the success rate of the company depends only on how quick can he find good people and bring them into the Indian market. It captured one major bank and one major service provider. It started penetrating into small pockets, land and expand on that. In the view of Nero, there is always an opportunity. Cyberbit don’t feel that it stops. Cybersecurity is a top priority for everyone. And when looking at cybersecurity skills there is a huge gap. Cyberbit is addressing the problem of the same between cybersecurity and its skills with its unique way which is going to revolutionize how trainings are conducted on cyber security. Cyberbit expects 15 ranges in India in the next three years.
