MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

LIFE AFTER COVID-19

SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends We are going through real trauma as far Covid-19 is concerned. But it has given us opportunity to introspect about our lifestyle and use of technology. Although government is trying to open all establishments including clubs and education institutes, yet people are scared to adapt to the new order. The new order would definitely impact the entire ecosystem – be it the way we consume technology or consume content or event we lead our lifestyle. Who is of opinion that Covid is not only pandemic that would impact the world order there would certainly be other pandemic following it? Therefore, everyone must be cognizant of the situation and remain prepared for this. The ways television content has been consumed is going to be impacted – instead of push content it is going to be pull content. It means OTT platforms are going to be very big. People are going to buy their own content not given by the television or theaters. Therefore, CDN is going to be powerful. E-commerce sites are going to be powerful as people would be performing their sale and purchase from anywhere and from any device. These two things are going to impact the entire business dynamics. As far as other things are concerned including education, tourism, automotive, etc. would be impacted, which already have been impacted during last 5-6 months. Consumers are not ready to drive out of their houses. So, tourism would be impacted so also the hotel and restaurant industry. It is very difficult to assess the impact. But consulting houses are of opinion that the things are going to be normal, which I am of opinion that they are misleading. I would say all the IT partners should keep in mind the new order is not going to go for a long time therefore be ready to sustain and thrive with a new approach. It is better to adapt to the new situation than whine about it. In order to learn about the new opportunity and new order, we are doing a lot of webinars where we are bringing the senior leaders of IT fraternity, I would urge all to participate and learn from their experience.

TeamViewer Launches AI-Supported Predictive Maintenance Solution TeamViewer has expanded its IoT offering and now offers a way to use artificial intelligence in maintenance. Until now, TeamViewer customers in the IoT field have been able to read sensors, set alarms and connect directly to a wide range of devices. Now an intelligent extension in the area of predictive maintenance is being added. This helps to reduce downtimes in particular and thus save costs. In the past, machines were only repaired if they had already failed (Reactive Maintenance). For some time now, machines have been serviced in a fixed cycle, regardless of whether they are defective or not (preventive maintenance). And only recently has predictive maintenance been used, mostly on the basis of pure data sets with fixed rules. TeamViewer goes a decisive step further here and offers AI-supported analysis of the resulting data. Machine learning algorithms can thus be used to detect previously unknown patterns and to diagnose impending machine failures at an early stage. The need to detect impending failures is obvious: every hour of unplanned downtime costs an average of US$ 250,000.

IMImobile announces it is part of Google’s program for Verified Calls [RealWire] IMImobile PLC, is part of Google’s program for Verified Calls. Verified Calls enables brands to increase consumer trust and improve call answer rates by helping people understand the identity of a business calling them. Consumers still rely on phone calls to communicate with businesses, especially for complex customer service enquiries. Businesses therefore spend $1.3 trillion on 265 billion customer service calls each year [1] yet 87% users will not answer the phone unless they recognize the callers’ number[2] as fraudulent calls continue to be a significant issue. Verified Calls solves this problem by displaying the verified identity and branding of the business as and when the call arrives on a consumer’s device. Furthermore, the purpose of the call is also displayed providing additional context to consumers. Verified calls increase consumer trust and reduce customer service costs by reducing the number of unanswered calls. Sudarshan Dharmapuri, EVP Products at IMImobile, commented, “We’re excited to now support Verified Calls and be part of Google’s program. Verified calls reduce friction and establish trust in business-toconsumer interactions, a theme that is central to our value proposition.”

s per the NTT Global Threat Intelligence Center (GTIC) threat actors are attacking applications and are looking for flaws in the applications available through their web presence. Vulnerabilities in off-the-shelf applications, custom-built applications, databases, support infrastructure, as well as development and management tools, allow cyber criminals to gain direct and public access to databases to churn sensitive data. Key findings: In June 2020, attacks against networking products (i.e., Zyxel, Netis, Netcore, Netgear, Linksys, D-link and Cisco) and video cameras accounted for about 32% of all attacks. Many of these were brute force or authentication attacks Beyond actual technologies being attacked, the list of actual vulnerabilities which are actively exploited tends to be relatively narrow. For instance, the top 10 most attacked vulnerabilities in 2019 accounted for 84% of all attacks observed and the top 20 most attacked vulnerabilities accounted for nearly 91% of all attacks. Some versions of Oracle Products, ThinkPHP, Joomla!, vBulletin, Apache Products, OpenSSL, IIS, and WordPress included vulnerabilities which could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to perform remote code execution on the targeted system Organisation or businesses can adopt a webapplication firewall (WAF) that helps to protect

henever we work with ransomware victims, we spend some time looking back through our telemetry records that span the previous week or two. These records sometimes include behavioral anomalies that (on their own) may not be inherently malicious, but in the context of an attack that has already taken place, could be taken as an early indicator of a threat actor conducting operations on the victim’s network. If we see any of these five indicators, in particular, we jump on them straight away. Any of these found during an investigation is almost certainly an indication that attackers have poked around: to get an idea of what the network looks like, and to learn how they can get the accounts and access they need to launch a ransomware attack. Attackers use legitimate admin tools to set the stage for ransomware attacks. Without knowing what tools administrators normally use on their machines, one could easily overlook this data. In hindsight, these five indicators represent investigative red flags.

THE REALITIES OF RANSOMWARE: FIVE SIGNS YOU’RE ABOUT TO BE ATTACKED

A network scanner, especially on a server. Attackers typically start by gaining access to one machine where they search for information: is this a Mac or Windows, what’s the domain and company name, what kind of admin rights does the computer have, and more. Next, attackers will want to know what else is on the network and what can they access. The easiest way to determine this is to scan the network. If a network scanner, such as AngryIP or Advanced Port Scanner, is detected, question admin staff. If no one cops to using the scanner, it is time to investigate.

They can then take this to their own environment and use MimiKatz to safely extract user names and passwords on their own test machine.

Tools for disabling antivirus software. Once attackers have admin rights, they will often try to disable security software using applications created to assist with the forced removal of software, such as Process Hacker, IOBit Uninstaller, GMER, and PC Hunter. These types of commercial tools are legitimate, but in the wrong hands, security teams and admins need to question why they have suddenly appeared.

Patterns of suspicious behavior Any detection happening at the same time every day, or in a repeating pattern is often an indication that something else is going on, even if malicious files have been detected and removed. Security teams should ask “why is it coming back?” Incident responders know it normally means that something else malicious has been occurring that hasn’t (as of yet) been identified.

The presence of MimiKatz Any detection of MimiKatz anywhere should be investigated. If no one on an admin team can vouch for using MimiKatz, this is a red flag because it is one of the most commonly used hacking tools for credential theft. Attackers also use Microsoft Process Explorer, included in Windows Sysinternals, a legitimate tool that can dump LSASS.exe from memory, creating a .dmp file.

Test attacks Occasionally, attackers deploy small test attacks on a few computers in order to see if the deployment method and ransomware executes successfully, or if security software stops it. If the security tools stop the attack, they change their tactics and try again. This will show their hand, and attackers will know their time is now limited. It is often a matter of hours before a much larger attack is

DELL: CUSTOMER SATISFACTION DESPITE WORKING FROM HOME Our world is going through unprecedented changes and it is impacting every aspect of life. What we have experienced is require all of us to pivot in many ways to keep our economy and lives going and still be able to progress forward. I think a lot of these things are being called as the giant social experiment. And again, time will tell how we’ll manage through this. Amit Midha, President, Asia Pacific & Japan & Global Digital Cities at Dell EMC, said, “Coming back to Dell as a technology company we have had front row seat to overnight digital transformation of our world. One of the most dramatic and drastic change we have seen in how we work. Government, education and healthcare industries had to operate virtually in many cases for the first time virtually and now work from anywhere is becoming more permanent fixtures wherever the jobs allow this.” Midha acknowledges the shift from response to recovery and admits that quick overnight technology transformation is significant as he says, “We must take these learnings forward as we reshape the future of the world. We have to embrace innovation and allow it to happen anywhere. Give people the tools they need and prioritize flexibility as a permanent fixture. Our values in technologies are there to develop new ways of engagement, pro activity and we have to learn from this nomad generation if we can call it as such.” Dell is committed to support its customer

transition with health and safety at the same time compliant with the governments. Therefore, Dell, as a company, has built flexibility into it culture for the last decade and can create a better work life balance for its people. Before March of this year Dell had about 30% of its team members working remotely on any given way and 65% of the team members were of opening to take advantage of flexible work environment. In mid-March the company shifted 90% of the workforce to remote. But in long run the company is planning to put as (+) 50% of workforce in remote environment. Midha maintained, “We must continue to reimagine work not as a place and time but as an outcome. And we must invest in emerging technology to propel society forward to be resilient in the face of whatever brings in. And if nothing else we may become more human along the way as well. I think we may learn to empathize better. These challenges that even in the opening some of you were mentioning, we do not know what day it is, what time it is, those things are very common.”

One of the recent reports talked about that they work hour has gotten longer and the number of meetings has increased. This is going to create different kind of stress and different kind of challenges for our people. Midha concludes, “It is also our commitment to customers to make sure that we can support them in providing essential services that they are providing for making sure society moves forward. John Scimone, Senior Vice President, Chief Security Officer, Dell Technologies, added, “The core guiding principle for all our efforts with the company is really to prioritize the health and safety of our team members, our customers and our communities. We found that we needed to implement globally scalable systems to give us that consistency, to leverage the advances that are available in data science to make sure we are making the best decisions on a daily basis for our team members, our customers and our communities as a whole.” “We have created a tool with the help of Dell’s own bright data scientists. It is updated daily and pulls from over 15 different key variables that the

medical professionals’ advice or the most pertinent and relevant data points to inform health risk judgments. Uses linear regression analysis to monitor curvature, trends and we also have increasingly some productive qualities about it so we can have foresight in our decision-making. And most importantly it’s globally consistent for the company across the globe measuring data across 188 countries in which we operate or travel to,” he added. We also take into account local conditions – local regulations, government policies. We have local leadership involved at the country and site level, tied into the local policy makers, the rules, regulations. We’re looking at things like our schools back, will our employees be facing a challenge potentially if schools aren’t back but they are going back the office? We factor all of those local conditions in and make sure that local conditions on the ground are prudent for us to bring employees back. And then when we do start bringing employees back, we don’t just bring everybody back overnight. We’ve actually gone through the process of phasing out and prioritising all of the roles that we have based on the necessity and importance of them coming back on site, either for productivity reasons or in the rare instances that we find that team members may have local hardship conditions in working remote, whether it may be internet connectivity or other considerations where we need to bring them back into the office to make sure that they’re safe and enable the employee to be productive. Dell Technologies was recently ranked No. 4 out of 100 companies on Fast Company’s Best Places to Work for Innovators. Midha added, “We are very proud of that. We know the transition back to site might be difficult, but this is also an opportunity for us to further reinvent and redefine work. We must continue to reimagine work not as a place and time. We must invest in emerging technologies to propel society forward.” Despite pushing employees to work from home and remoted places, Dell has received tremendous success. In Australia Dell helped Hydro Tasmania to modernise the IT through a two year digital transformation journey. The OEM empowered them with the capability to move their entire 1,400 strong workforce to remote working. These implementations were done during the lockdowns. In Korea Dell helped HanaTour with the adoption of Next Gen Hybrid Cloud for business efficiency and agility. Now they’re able to embark on some of the applications… development projects for new services more quickly. And the time to market has been slashed pretty dramatically as

AMIT MIDHA PRESIDENT, ASIA PACIFIC & JAPAN & GLOBAL DIGITAL CITIES AT DELL EMC

“WE MUST CONTINUE TO RE-IMAGINE WORK NOT AS A PLACE AND TIME BUT AS AN OUTCOME. AND WE MUST INVEST IN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY TO PROPEL SOCIETY FORWARD TO BE RESILIENT IN THE FACE OF WHATEVER BRINGS IN.” well. In Philippines, with empty digital overhaul through workforce transformation started 2 years back. But what benefit was is, they were able to do business as usual through the lockdown as well. in India Dell worked with very large life sciences companies to help ramp up testing facilities for COVID-19. The company implemented virtualised environment for global testing operation and to centrally monitor and maintain control over data governance. In Japan an IT services company was tasked by the government to help manage the nation’s financial relief program for SMEs. Midha maintained, “We supported them through efficient supply chain and DFS solution. DFS is our financing solution that we are offering to both customers and partners.” One of the largest banks in Asia needed all their 5,000 staff to work from home to continue operating their banking essential services remotely. And the VDI technology was chosen and Dell have been able to provide those expanded workloads for expansion of their existing infrastructure that Dell had provided, plus also the Next Gen devices. Midha said, “I think there are more used cases that we cannot share, but they are yet to come. As we return to site, as we learn to coexist with the virus, as we move away from containment and mitigation to coexistence mode for this virus or even prepare for what may be next, I think there will be new used cases coming up. What is clear is that digital penetration of services is going to be expanding exponentially, and what we see is that people are continuing to be going to invest in ways to not only take advantage of the data, but also be able to prepare for additional used cases; some of them I have mentioned, but there are more to

come.” Apart from technology short supply, there was a contraction of finance too; but the customers and partners have been vocal about their need for flexible financing, financial services that can support the digital transformation. In April Dell launched its PFP – Payment Flexibility Program and announced 9 billion in financing to help fund their critical technology needs. Under the PFP program, Dell even pursued payment deferrals until 2021. This program in the region is available in ANZ Japan and Singapore. Dell is also working through other financing partners to find solutions for its customers and partners as well. Finally… Dell believes in continuous support to its customers and provide essential services they need, while keeping its team members safe. Midha concludes, “We’re going to continue to innovate to the new way of doing work, which is not tied to a place and time, but driven by an outcome. We also have to think about how we can get new challenges, whether it’s about additional attack that comes in, whether it’s about social distancing, whether it’s about masking, all of those things we have to think about as well. In addition to that, how do we make sure we are being part of the solution in terms of creating the right policy and right support infrastructure for our people, for tiredness or fatigue or other things that we haven’t foreseen yet.” In essence, Dell’s vision is to create essential infrastructure that drives the human progress and therefore takes its role very seriously and shows commitment to a society which creates digital future for all of us again.

With our best in class service outreach backed by the latest innovations across all product segments, we will continue to strengthen our commitment towards ‘Customer Delight’. Please elaborate some of the initiatives that Canon India had taken from a customer service perspective during the lockdown phase? At Canon India, service is an integral part of our everyday operations and the backbone of our legacy in the country. In the wake of COVID-19 we had to keep our service depot, and the center closed in line with the Government directives. However, for our customers falling under the category of essential service providers, our service team has gone ‘Above and Beyond’ to support the purchasers. We constantly provided consumables

and on-site services to those customers through various means and methods. Our engineers provided remote support, we ensured toner delivery is done on time, and in many cases our engineers made site visits, taking all the prescribed precautions and permissions. Once the lockdown is lifted, how many regions for Canon will be made operational from a service perspective? Due to current situation of lockdown across our country, as of now there are 261 service center operational out of 273. Being a responsible corporate, we are consistently ensuring that our staff follow all the due precautions. Health and safety of our staff is paramount for us; hence we would be waiting for the next updated directives of the Government to resume our service network in the remaining regions. We at Canon believe in learning from even a crisis. Hence, we have picked up new ways of working and provide best possible services to our customers. A testimony to this is our two new mobile applications for customer service, Canon Care and Mobile CMP, and WhatsApp services. The new mobile applications endeavor to strengthen our prowess in delivering end to end customer support, thereby setting a benchmark in the service segment. WhatsApp services have been introduced to assist customers

MANISH GUPTA, SENIOR DIRECTOR & GENERAL MANAGER, INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS GROUP, DELL TECHNOLOGIES INDIA

DELL TECHNOLOGIES AGAIN NO. 1 IN X86 SERVER 2020 has been remarkable for Dell Technologies’ server business. Highlight from which all segments you have witnessed maximum traction, and did you also witness interest from SMBs? I am happy to share that the year 2020 started fairly on a good note for us. As per IDC Q1 2020 India Server Industry report, we was ranked as No. 1 in the x86 server segment with 36% revenue share. Number of units we shipped were more than what our next two competitors shipped. I believe that our leadership in this segment is a testimony to our holistic server portfolio that resonated well with our customers in India, including SMBs. Our wins from verticals like professional services, financial institutions, high-tech semiconductor manufacturing companies, and telecommunication vendors helped us secure the top spot. How do you see market situation spanning over the period of time? Does the same imply for SMBs? The current situation has forced all enterprises, be it large or small, to innovate and adapt themselves. It has made them realize that technology advancement is the only catalyst that will help them sail through this present latitude. Few upcoming trends that we can witness are: Since, businesses cannot have physical con-

nect with their customers, they are trying to deploy new channels of engagement. But, this is only possible when they have entire backend and front-end digitally connected. Organizations have realized the benefits of a digital-first approach and therefore, we are seeing increase in digital adoption across segments Present situation has also forced majority of the workforce to operate from home. This big change has necessitated new architectures and infrastructure to be deployed by organizations so that employees get the same level of granular access to data when working from home. Hence, we are seeing workforce transformation at large Employees are now working from different places and due to this, the number of ports have opened up, making security a major concern than ever before. Organizations not only require to manage the extensive workloads across locations but also equally need to ensure that they’re securing all parts from where the data is coming without a security glitch. Thus, growing importance for security. Do you believe that on-prem deployment is increasing or its just sentimental change, looking at the multiple options that cloud solutions are offering? Organizations are realizing that it is going to

be a multi-cloud world in the long run. Some workloads will be suitable for public cloud, some workloads will be extremely critical, and thus, organization will be willing to store them on a private cloud i.e. on-prem. So, every organization will have a co-existence of multiple clouds. Businesses would need to equip themselves with all the modern infrastructure, so that they could manage their applications and workloads across locations. At a time when many of the companies are laying off their employees, where do you see current consumption going? As per the IDC Q1 numbers, while the market has not grown and the overall demand in the industry for servers actually declined year on year, however, for us, we were able to garner a larger share of that particular market segment. Having said that, we firmly believe that in the longer term, we will see significant growth in the Indian server market. What are the new products/technologies you plan to bring in the market and how would provide training to the channel partners? We have been focused on bringing modern-age solutions to our customers in their journey of digital transformation. On the technology front,

and deploy those solutions to the customers end. What are the factors that led to the significant growth for Dell Technologies in the market? We have always been at the forefront in delivering the best technology innovations to our customers. Few notable highlights that helped us to achieve the market share are: End – to- end solutions – Today, we are the only organization in the industry that provides end-to -end solutions to our customers from the edge, to core, to cloud. Customers see us as being that one-stop-shop for all their IT solutions and requirements Differentiated strategy – All of the solutions that we are developing, are resonating well with our customers. Our ready solutions and innovations at the core are some of the offerings that are extremely differentiate from what anyone else is doing in the market Go-to market strategy – The trust that our partners and customers instill in us is a reflection of our successful market strategy. We are closely working with our channel partners and enabling them with working capital solution, so that they provide value proposition to our customers in current timese What are some of the key trends that you can forecast in the upcoming months? Accelerated digital transformation – To stay competitive, businesses will need to modernize and automate their systems to ensure that they are able to manage the workloads, both the traditional and new-age ones Workforce transformation – Organizations would have to provide their employees the same application and access to products/solutions that they were having in office Security Transformation – Businesses would need to have security at the core of IT infrastructure rather than the periphery. Approach to security should be proactive.

we are looking towards bringing in solutions that make the work from home experience better, enhance the transformation journey, and significant investment in that area have been made by us. We are also building security at the core of the servers rather than just keeping it at the periphery as well as deploying automation tools and manageability at the core. Additionally, we have also brought solutions, which are easy and ready to deploy, known as ready solutions. At Dell Tech-

nologies, we are providing validated and engineered solutions to our customers beforehand, so that customers can deploy them very quickly and easily and no iterations are required from their end For our channel partners, we have kept a close relationship with them. At a time when physical connection is a concern, we have been conducting regular webinars, training for them across tier 1, 2 & 3 cities, so that they understand the portfolio

What is your growth strategy going ahead? Our strategy has significantly hinged on the fact that we have been one of the most innovative players in this segment. We are well-connected with our customers, we understand their needs, and assist them accordingly. We will also continue to invest in developing new and contemporary solutions and support our channel partners so that they can reach out to customers, providing them with right technology.
