MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

CHARTING OUT NEW TRACK SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends With the change in the pattern of technology consumption in the Industry, the partner business needs to change. For a long time, Indian channel partners were in the state of delirium as to what is happening in the industry, whether they would go for services business or stay in the product business. But now it seems that partners are clear in their thought process and aligned with what is happening in the industry. It is evident from the fact that on 20th and 21st of September, Hotel Le Meridian, Goa, SME channels organized its annual partner event where 100 top SIs / Partners were invited to attend. Before this event we had taken nominations from individual partners on their capabilities. A form was filled with 10 questionnaire, which would lead to create judgement around the partners’ intension and capability.

We had used a simple online tool called surveyplanet.com. This tool had given us amazing results. It had captured details of more than 1000 partners, but we had to select 100 partners based on their capability, certification, turnover, etc. which gave us clear impression of who is capable of what and who is heading for what direction. Now we could sense that the partner market is change and changing rapidly. Today, the partners want to become solution provider first then become SI and then become MSP and then ISV. Apart from this progression, they want to add various capability including IOT, Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence, etc. Becoming a cloud partner is not so cool now as cloud has become a household name and there is no hyper around it but certainly technology like SDN, SD-WAN or 5G, multi cloud, Security, etc. So partners are looking at all new technologies and entering into new territories. That is my submission about partners growth in India. But certainly you will find a lot of technology from this issue. Wish happy Diwali in Advance!

Adobe India To Follow Predatory Pricing Policies In the Indian Software Market Adobe India is selling software on its Adobe.com website directly to Indian customers evading Withholding Taxes and possibly GST. Adobe India is selling at 7% lower than the prices given to Indian resellers by its Authorised Distributor IngramMicro. These lower prices are applicable to Business , Education and

6

SME CHANNELS OCTOBER 2019

Corporate customers. This is causing enormous hardship to Indian Channel partners who are forced to keep quiet as the Adobe Indian Team will stop supporting them and shift their customers to other partners. This practice has been prevalent from the last 5 years and the percentage of the lower prices has increased from initially 1% to

7% as of now. Also they are billing to Indian customers from outside India by credit card evading Taxes and Income tax guidelines. Ideally, the web prices should be ~10% higher than the reseller transfer rates, but with its lower online prices Adobe India has disrupted the Indian Software Market.

4.3 million WannaCry infection attempts worldwide stopped by Sophos Sophos published WannaCry Aftershock, a report on what happened to the infamous WannaCry malware, following the worldwide attack that began on May 12, 2017. The research by SophosLabs shows that the WannaCry threat remains rampant, with millions of infection attempts stopped every month, and that while the original malware has not been updated; many thousands of short-lived variants are in the wild. The continued existence of the WannaCry threat is largely due to the ability of these new variants to bypass the ‘kill switch.’ However, when Sophos researchers analyzed and executed a number of variant samples, they found that their ability to encrypt data was neutralized as a result of code corruption. Because of the way in which WannaCry infects new victims – checking to see if a computer is already infected and, if so moving on to another target – infection by an inert version of the malware effectively protects the device from being infected with the active strain.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ]AND ITS ROLE IN NEAR FUTURE The concept of AI as a technology was earlier closer to fiction. However, it is no longer fiction but a reality that has become a part of the market as well as our daily lives. It has permeated all business operations and still has miles to go. By: Nidhi Shail nidhi@accentinfomedia.com

t was at a conference at Dartmouth, in Hanover, New Hampshire, where the term “artificial intelligence” was coined. Artificial intelligence in today’s world is progressing rapidly with new advanced innovations day in and day out. Today’s computer systems are designed to perform small tasks, for example facial recognition, car driving, and performance of other minor duties. However, the first goal of Artificial intelligence is to develop advanced and a lot of complicated systems that will beat humans at any task. This includes the performance of a lot of complex tasks like playing chess and solving equations. Therefore, in the long run the goal of AI is to excel in all human activities and supply higher solutions to business requirements than otherwise possible. The concept of AI as an area of science earlier was closer to fiction. However, it is no longer

fiction but a reality that has become a part of our daily lives. AI Adoption, Deployment and Complexities According to a new report from Narrative Science and the National Business Research Institute, 61% of businesses said they implemented AI in 2017--up from just 38% in 2016, demonstrating that AI has finally hit the enterprise in a meaningful way. Nearly 200 executives were surveyed, 71% said their company has an “innovation strategy” to push investments in new technologies like AI. And 59% of companies said they had a budget to invest in innovation, and 62% said that budget has increased in the past year. Though the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) always appears to be on the horizon, many companies have already realized its benefits. Atleast 20 percent of respondents say their companies have already embedded Robotic Process Automation, Computer Vision, and Machine learning technologies into their business processes. Explaining about the status of market adoption of AI in India and globally Ashish Taneja, Channel Head, Lenovo Data Center Group India says “The PWC report also analyzed that that while 62% of organizations in India have implemented AI applications, only 10% of Indian CEOs are confident about the reliability of these applications.

20 SME CHANNELS OCTOBER 2019

However, in comparison to the global average of 65%, 62% adoption is a great statistic as this shows that the Indian market is pacing up quickly. However, out of those who have implemented the technology, almost 53% have no formal approach to identifying AI risks and nearly 29% have no tools to assess and access security flaws in their AI systems. Therefore, while AI is gaining ground, the actual understanding of these applications is still at a nascent stage for most enterprises. Due to lack of in-house knowledge, many organizations are not confident about deploying AI solutions in day-today decision-making processes, thereby missing out on the opportunities and full potential of AI. Organizations must therefore seek to improve their business intelligence (BI). By understanding themselves, their competitors, and the ecosystem, in which they operate, they will be better placed to identify opportunities for advancing their market position—and AI can be a real ally in this area.” Experts state the rise of AI is the driving force behind the fourth industrial revolution. According to a New survey done by Oracle AI is changing the Relationship between People and Technology at Work. Contrary to common fears around how AI will impact jobs, employees, managers and HR leaders across the globe are reporting increased adoption of AI at work and many are welcoming AI with confidence .The survey says that AI is

becoming more well-known with 50 percent of workers currently using it compared to only 32 percent last year. Workers in China (77 percent) and India (78 percent) have adopted AI over 2X more than those in France (32 percent) and Japan (29 percent). Why should Enterprises embrace AI? Key reasons why enterprises are embracing AI is because companies have realized that the massive amount of data they are collecting or have access to can be leveraged to bring out more efficiency, productivity, and cost savings. IDC predicts worldwide spending on AI systems is expected to reach US$35.5 billion in 2019, 44 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Such growth is a motivation for partners adopting AI as industries are investing heavily in this technology. For Channels in the customer service , sales process and automated threat intelligence departments US$4.5 billion, US$2.7 billion and US$2.7 billion respectively the investment will grow in another 12 months . IDC also revealed, five other use cases will see investment levels greater than US$2 billion in 2019 in automated preventative maintenance, diagnosis and treatment systems, fraud analysis and investigation, intelligent process automation, and program advisors and recommendation sys-

tems departments. Though having its fair share of advantages this technology also comes with some complexities. As much as we want to rely on machines to improve our thinking, it turns out that the interchange between human and machine is always complicated. All the expert employees that any business already has would be people who are trained in technologies that have already gone through the initial stages of development. But as far as adoption of AI is concerned, businesses cannot proceed without either acquiring a new team or training its existing one. Another challenge that needs to be mentioned here, is that implementation of AI primarily uses huge volumes of Data to make intelligent decisions, which makes it imperative for a business to safeguard Cybersecurity to ensure that security concerns like Data Breach and Identity theft are under control. Most of the AI applications are based on massive volumes of data to learn and make intelligent decisions. These systems learn from the data and improve themselves. Due to this systematic learning, these systems can become prone to data breach and identity theft. Hence, AI’s time may have finally come, but more progress is required. And the adoption of AI

is uneven across various companies and sectors. Elaborating on his organization’s journey with its partners in AI market Adoption Ashish Taneja, Channel Head, Lenovo Data Center Group India says ,” We work strategically with our partners to bring together the best technology from our partner ecosystem to deliver 360-degree solutions to our customers. In APAC region, over 90 percent of our business is channel centric as enterprise channel partners give us the reach to much deeper customer base. This makes it imperative for our channel partners in India to have the technical expertise and business judgement to bring intelligent AI solutions closer to the customers”. According to the use of Lenovo in partner strategy to enhance the growth of AI for better business he further added , “We help our channel partners succeed by enabling them to stay relevant and future-proof their business via continuous dialogue. Our channel strategy is also curated to make it easy for partners to grow with us, while continually improving our infrastructure and processes to promote ease of doing business with them.Lenovo also has plans to invest nearly USD$1.2 billion in R&D to help bring AI to life, which includes the Lenovo Intelligent Computing Orchestration (LiCO)—a software solution

designed to overcome challenges for customers implementing multi-user environments using clusters for both HPC workflows and AI development. Although AI is still in its nascent stage and corporates are still working on the blueprint for implementation, there is no doubt that AI will be a gamechanger for business in future. And when that happens, enterprises will find Lenovo standing right beside them helping them collect on the investment decisions that they are making today”. Finally…… Companies that wait to adopt AI may never catch up. The survey clearly shows that in the near future AI technology is going to take over the market and investments done in this technology is going to redefine the way a business conducts its operations. AI technology is quickly pervading every aspect of the market. It is well on its way to becoming crucial to the functionality of the market.

fast moving, which refrigerator needs replenishment, etc. So, the applications are far too many for every industry. This brings a new paradigm of business opportunity for the partners. The traditional business of end point to datacenter or cloud is not any more attractive for the thousands of Indian IT partners from revenue point of view. The applications are becoming consumerised, the margins are becoming wafer thin in the traditional business. There is nothing much to do for a partner. Therefore there is certainly a hidden agenda among all business owners as to how embrace new business opportunities which can fetch them healthy revenue and make their organizations future ready for the new age workforce including their own siblings to cherish their brighter career opportunities, which has thrill, creativity and money. To many of the pundits new age applications including IOT, AI, BI, AR VR, etc. where challenge lies from application integration and execution point of view can bring back the old age glory of good margin and prosperous business year on year. So to us among all the technologies IOT is becoming the most complex and therefore the most margin garnering opportunity for the partners. Internet of Things or IOT was first coined by Kevin Ashton in the RFID journal 1999. And in 2005 this name was modified to ‘Internet of Things’. Research on IoT has been booming for the past 6 years due to technological advances and potential for applications. IoT is a new technology that is used to express a modern wireless telecom-

munication network, and it can be defined as an intelligent and interoperable node interconnected in a dynamic global infrastructure network, also it seeks to implement the connectivity concept of anything from anywhere at any time. IoT Advantages and Risks Due to its wide-ranging benefits and applicability across sectors, IoT has been labelled as ‘the next Industrial Revolution’. Sectors as varied as Healthcare, Manufacturing, Logistics, e-commerce, etc. are aggressively adopting IoT. For example, in the Healthcare sector, one of the biggest adopter of IoT technology can be Remote Patient Monitoring Solutions- doctors now rely on sensors to monitor vital parameters like heart rate, blood sugar etc., leading to newer service offerings from the healthcare providers in Preventive & Palliative Healthcare. Similarly Hospitals or Healthcare providers can deploy IoT solutions for Asset Location, Asset Management, Asset Utilization, Asset loss prevention etc. An IoT application is available in every industry for, construction, travel and transportation, personal care, retail, agriculture, etc. And in the industrial area Internet of Things revolves around automation and logistics and creating smarter solutions, programmatically adjusting to human behavior. Zebra has launched its third annual Intelligent Enterprise Index, which indicates a record 61% of enterprises worldwide are on the path to becoming “intelligent,” compared to only 49% in 2018. “With the continued adoption of mobility and IoT, the edge of enterprise operations is becom-

poses some serious issues that need to be tackled well to utilize its fullest potential. In the case of IoT there are concerns about the security fallout from having an ecosystem of connected devices that are hooked to the cloud. As with all complex systems, there are more opportunities for failure. While the application of IoT appears to be straightforward, it is not without challenges. Early adopters of IoT Some industries have been faster than others to adopt the IOT. Utilities and Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Automotive, Transportation & Logistics are at the forefront of the adoption. Application areas for IoT IoT Market Opportunities Four years back, Cisco’s the then CEO and Presi-

dent, John Chambers had said that there would be 52 billion devices connected over IOT technology by 2025 but as per today’s estimation, most likely there would be 75. 5 billion devices connected over IOT. It means number of connected devices growing faster every passing year. It is a global number though, but the application areas are growing faster as well. Commenting on the market opportunity in IoT, Nabuath Ulla Khan, Practice Head Manufacturing and IoT Analytics, SAS India says “This has been a hot question and a topic that everyone is focused on today, multiple research firms including the big 4’s and NASSCOM, etc. have done extensive research on this and have published numbers ranging from about USD 5.6 billion in

2020 to about USD 9.0 billion in 2020“. And explaining about the status of market adoption of IoT, he further adds,” IoT adoption isn’t matching the pace of its growth in form of technological innovations, constant reduction in sensor/component cost, etc. Though in parallel there are several market forces such as real-time analytics and cloud computing, in addition to the reduced component cost that is fueling positive sentiments towards adoption of IoT at large scale, but there are still a few concerns revolving around security, complexity and skill gap that are acting inversely and slowing down the adoption rate”. Elaborating more on market adoption Supaul Chanda, Business Head, TeamLease Digital says,” from tech perspective we are seeing the rapid changes IOT is bringing about. The challenge might be government red-tape, which at present is minimal; rather there is a push from the government as well for adoption and upskilling on this front. The only other challenge would be human imagination running faster than our tech advancement, and we might have products which are not market yet ready because the tech is yet to evolve”. With these new opportunities channel partners need to consider several factors. MSPs will have to analyze the data collected by the devices in a way that provides informed business outcomes for customers. Offering IoT managed services is all together adopting a new technology with new practice area and Channel partners that want to offer IoT managed services will need to bring new expertise into their business. Commenting on business opportunity in IoT for partners and what they need to do in order to embrace IoT as a business opportunity for them Shrirang Deshpande, Country Manger – Strategic Accounts, Vertiv India says, “Partners need to be prepared to lay the groundwork for IoT and priorities IoT discussions with customers, as it is a very significant opportunity. While IoT opportunities for a majority of channel partners are at a nascent stage, they need to be prepared to address customer queries on IoT, discuss, and help prepare an IoT roadmap going forward. At Vertiv, we encourage our channel partners to begin planning their IoT roadmaps and pay attention to vertical market skills along with integration capabilities. If they can assess the customer’s network and security, they are better placed to ensure that the customer is ready to adopt IoT technology. This could mean guiding customers around Vertiv’s IoT products and services, or looking at a customer’s infrastructure and assessing if their capabilities can support IoT when the time comes.

“BY EARLY 2019 THE COUNT OF CONNECTED DEVICES WAS JUST AROUND 200 MILLION ACROSS INDUSTRIES AND VARIOUS SPECTRUMS, AND RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THIS IS GOING TO GROW MULTIFOLD/ SUBSTANTIALLY AND WOULD REACH CLOSE TO ABOUT 1.9 BILLION BY END OF 2020”

“ENTERPRISES AND SERVICE PROVIDERS HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT IOT AS A KEY ENABLER TO DRIVE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND UNLOCK OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES. INDIA OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEPLOY EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES LIKE IOT AT A LARGE SCALE AND BRING EFFICIENCIES AND ECONOMIES OF SCALE. FURTHERMORE, THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA IS TAKING SEVERAL MEASURES TO PUSH THIS ADOPTION, WITH INITIATIVES LIKE MAKE IN INDIA, DIGITAL INDIA, SMART CITIES, ETC”

We believe this to be a brilliant opportunity for our channel partners as they can leverage their existing expertise of vertical markets and propel it with a new technology”. Finally… The future of the IoT structure relies on the integration among real or physical worlds, the cyber-world and social world IoT improves the decision-making habits of decision-makers. The emergence of IoT and related technologies, such as Cloud Computing, provides the ability to remove Data sources in different domains. Typically, any Data is considered useful in the domain itself, and data on shared domains can be used to provide different strategies. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are key technologies that are used to provide value-added applications along with IoT and big data in addition to being used in a stand-alone mode. Before the emergence of IoT and cloud computing, the use of these technologies was not

possible due to the lack of data and required computational power. It is anticipated that the speed of technological progress in the next ten years, will be equal to the past thirty years. Therefore, we have to use all our efforts to update our lives to the Internet of Things technology regarding hardware and software. Although IoT has quite a few disadvantages, its advantages of saving the consumed time and costs cannot be ignored. So the time isn’t far when the Internet of Things will be commonly seen in both households and companies. Efforts will have to be made to find ways to combat its disadvantages.

ALARIS E1035

SCANNER BY SANJAY MOHAPATRA sanjay@smechannels.com

A

LARIS E1035 Scanner is one of the latest additions to the smart scanners Alaris family. A lot of trade people were talking about the efficiency of the scanner but as they say the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Therefore, we wanted to test the scanner and check its true efficiency. From the outset - with its box packing, the scanner gives an impression of being small in its footprint, which is true. It does not occupy much of the table space, however, with the full extension of its input and output tray easily accommodates the papers of all sizes - below legal paper till your credit cards. If it is not in operation you can push back all the extensions and keep it in a corner. This machine is absolutely user friendly… just plug into the power point and input documents, it stars firing. The tiny LED indicator along with buttons for operation are good enough for consistent scanning. As the name suggests E1035, the scanner is a 35-ppm machine, which is good enough for a small or medium size company. The good thing about the scanner is that it is quite rugged as it can take 4000 pages per day as per the user manual, however an organization does this much of volume per day, unless a large digitization project is taking place. So, when we opened up and started scanning documents, we tried various types of documents including A4 normal documents, A4 handwritten

documents, documents in transparent papers, colour documents, ID cards, visiting cards, credit cards, etc. in the first attempt we could not get good results but in the second attempt with some twigging in the software, the output was amazing. The software called Perfect Page Technology which may be a patented technology of this scanner really optimizes the image quality. On top of it, you can save scanned documents in various image formats in various source connected to the network and send mails to various mailboxes. You can customize the software or mail messaging activities either from your laptop or from the display, depending upon your convincing. But I will suggest use the bigger display (your laptop), which I used for my convenience. With this scanner the digital document is much better as it can capture the smallest details accurately by filtering out streaks. Apart from the PPM and capacity, the feeder tray can take upto 80 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper and can handle small documents such as A8, ID cards, embossed hard cards and insurance cards. As per the manual, the paper input is 27- 200 g/m2 paper; ID thickness up to 1.4 mm. Alaris E 1035’s intelligent exception handling maximizes process efficiency with accurate capture at the point of customer interaction. Alaris E 1035’s intelligent software determines if the scanner can detect patch sheets. If it cannot,

it’s processed in the software. When the software encounters a feature patch sheet, it switches to the appropriate job; scanner profile setup and then continues scanning. It can automatically optimize barcode processing to provide the fastest, most accurate results. Its powerful OCR allows you to use the cursor to box in a piece of information, and that data automatically populates the corresponding index field so you don’t have to key it in manually. The scanner is very scalable and simple to use. A solution built around Alaris Capture Pro can grow with your business needs. It has flexible licensing options and can support over 200 scanners from Alaris and other popular vendors. It has an easy distributed deployment and management with network edition and is available as a 1-year subscription in addition to existing perpetual licensing options. It can easily remove sensitive information (i.e. Social Security Number, Credit Card Number). It supports automatic search and redact feature while scanning and viewing documents and the Operator can accept or reject redaction while using it.
