What are you researching? How the family planning aid restrictions of the Mexico City Policy effect outcomes, such as fertility and child mortality. Once I graduate, I’m joining the International Food Policy Research Institute in New Delhi as a research analyst. Why did you choose Tufts? I grew up in the Boston area and was interested in coming back after I moved to India. Tufts is a great school with excellent faculty and a perfect location. The school has everything I looked for, and more that I hadn’t even thought about! What do you value most about your experience here? That I had the opportunity to meet wonderful people from all over the world, and made connections that just might last me a lifetime.
My current research focuses on Camilla in Virgil’s Aeneid. By considering her literary and mythological antecedents, I am exploring how her character helps illuminate issues of gender, marriage, and the importance of citizenship in early Augustan Rome. Why did you choose Tufts? The Classics program is doing a lot of interesting work in the field of Digital Humanities, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate. The rigor and innovation in the department will give me the skills to continue my own work while introducing middle and high school students to this exciting field of study.
What have you researched? At Tufts, my research was at the intersection of sustainable development, equity, and capacity building. I was able to travel abroad to India and Chile, and interned in the Greater Boston area to supplement my work. Why did you choose Tufts? After completing a technical undergrad, I wanted to complement my studies by learning social and political frameworks, and Tufts helped me accomplish that. What do you value most about your experience here? The people and communities. There are lots of events catered to what is happening globally and groups to get involved with and learn alongside.
What do you value most about your experience here? What I value most is the community at Tufts. My professors challenge me to push my thinking. My peers support me in the ups and downs of life in academia. Tufts, however, is so much more than the two departments I spend most of my time in. I am grateful for all of the people in my Tufts life, from the librarians to the custodians who are an integral part of my education here. 5

The Allen Discovery Center With a $10 million grant, the Allen Discovery Center is dedicated to research at the frontier of the life sciences. Michael Levin, Vannevar Bush Professor in the Department of Biology, and an interdisciplinary team of graduate student researchers are exploring the bioelectrical control of development and regeneration, which could lead to medical breakthroughs regarding birth defects, cancer, traumatic injuries, and degenerative diseases.

Tier-1 Research Requires World-Class Facilities. The Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex (CLIC)
CLIC combines specialized research labs, learning spaces, and social areas. For instance, Occupational Therapy students and faculty use the Innovation and Simulation Lab in CLIC to engage in interdisciplinary simulated practice experiments and collaborate with community partners to design, implement, and test innovative projects and technology. CLIC also has small private rooms for social scientists to conduct research interviews and open spaces for students and faculty from all disciplines to collaborate on projects.
Health and Fitness The Science and Engineering Complex (SEC)
Relax and recharge while you hit the 6,000square-foot Tisch Sports and Fitness Center, or make friends by joining an intramural team.
This state-of-the-art hub was designed to facilitate innovative research. Inside you’ll find teaching labs with ergonomic workstations, a mass spectrometer suite, and modern classrooms. The SEC also features a café and sunlit fourstory atrium to foster student interaction in non-academic settings.
The Tisch Library
The largest of the Tufts libraries, Tisch Library provides extensive resources for graduate students across disciplines. The library’s adaptive space accommodates new learning modes, including the Data Lab, while also supporting traditional study. In addition, Tisch Library includes the branches of the Lilly Music Library and the W. Van Alan Clark, Jr. Library at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

Solving Social Challenges Requires a Human Touch.
Learning Through Play To foster STEM learning, Marina Bers, professor and chair in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development and director of the Early Childhood Technology certificate, and dozens of tufts students developed KIBO, a small robot that kids ages 4 to 7 can program using wooden blocks without keyboards or screens. Featured in The New York Times, KIBO robot kits, student workbooks, and more are now available around the world.
Breaking Down Stereotypes
Marquel Norton M.A./Ed.S. in School Psychology Marquel Norton earned his specialized master’s degree with a new educational studies concentration. He proposed the custom program after being inspired by an Educational Studies class that keyed into racism and how it operates in schools. Norton applied his newfound skills at his special education internship at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in diverse Dorchester. For instance, he played chess with children with autism during the intervention phase of cases, to help students build social skills and organize their lives. These days, Norton is pursuing his goal of becoming a school psychologist in an inner city. After that, he’ll get his Ph.D. and become a professor— perhaps even at Tufts.

At the Social Identity and Stigma Lab, Associate Professor of Psychology Jessica Remedios examines a variety of prejudices. Her work explores how perceivers express and how targets experience racism, sexism, ageism, and anti-gay bias under conditions that reflect the complexities of real-world person perception.
From Author to Mentor Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Julian Agyeman brings both a science and social science background to his work. His focal research interest is in the nexus between environmental justice and sustainability and the possibility of “just sustainabilities” as they pertain to development in an unequal world. Agyeman recently edited a book of essays with two Tufts graduate students titled Food Trucks, Cultural Identity, and Social Justice: From Loncheras to Lobsta Love that focuses on how food trucks reflect complex food systems and issues such as class and poverty.

Natural Sciences
At Tufts, There’s More to Research Than Benchwork. Rachael Bonoan Ph.D. in Biology We rely on bees to pollinate a third of the crops we eat, but bee colonies are declining at an alarming rate. Rachael Bonoan wondered if a diverse diet affects bee susceptibility to various diseases. To find out, Bonoan raised two groups of bees on different, exclusive diets. Both groups were then challenged with chalkbrood, a common fungal disease. Bonoan’s hypothesis? With enough—and the right mix of—protein, bees can contract their thoracic muscles enough to warm the hive and kill the heat-sensitive pathogen. As Bonoan analyzes her data, she’s already been accepted as a postdoctoral fellow as part of the Crone Lab at Tufts and the Schultz Lab at Washington State University.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Joshua Kritzer knows how important interdisciplinary work is. In fact, the Kritzer lab integrates methods related to genetics, biophysical chemistry, and organic synthesis to identify peptides that can inhibit proteins involved in many currently “undruggable” cancers.
In 2018, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf asked Associate Professor of Mathematics Moon Duchin for help drafting legislative districts that don’t favor a particular party, class, or race. As she explains, using innovative algorithmic sampling methods “is a truly nonpartisan way to put limits on the power of the line-drawers to tilt maps in any particular direction.”
New research from Tufts has implications for food safety—and delicious cheese. Assistant Professor of Biology Benjamin Wolfe’s lab discovered that bacteria on cave-ripened cheese use pathways created by fungi to spread more efficiently. With this knowledge, cheesemakers could soon be manipulating these fungal highways to influence ripeness, flavor, and more.

Where Research and Creativity Share the Stage Earlier in her career, Heather Nathans, Alice and Nathan Gantcher Professor in Judaic Studies in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, was a doctoral candidate at Tufts. After graduating, she served as a previous president of the American Society for Theatre Research. And now? Nathans runs the show behind the scenes as the Department Chair for the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.
Going Beyond the Abstract with Philosophy Associate Professor of Philosophy Patrick Forber studies “the science of science” and teaches in the nation’s top-ranked terminal M.A. program in philosophy. His research explores evolutionary biology, including how spiteful behavior might have scared early societies into acting more fairly to survive.

Emma Schneider Ph.D. in English As part of her doctoral experience, Emma Schneider participated in the Graduate Institute for Teaching (GIFT) program, where she co-taught Environmental Justice and World Literature. The GIFT program is more than just real-world teaching experience at the college level. It also paired Schneider with her co-teacher, Professor Elizabeth Ammons. With support from Ammons in the English department, Schneider designed and taught her own first-year writing course, Perceiving Environments. As Schneider has said, literature is a great place to get us to think beyond ourselves. Similarly, Tufts has proven to be a great place for Schneider to combine her passions for educating, writing, and advocating for the environment.

Economics and Public Policy Ph.D. This joint program with The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy focuses on the critical issues of economic development, the rising demand for energy, and the environmental consequences of such progress.
