SEAN HARROD’S PORTFOLIO
DMC Self-Directed Project For this project we had to direct our own brief, using emerging technology. I chose to create an app, and after missing a bus to college that morning, I decided to base it around getting the bus on time! www.argig.tumblr.com
After creating a concept for an app that shows you the times your buses are due in realtime, I decided it was too boring, and there was a better way to make it, by creating a game out of catching the bus. I called it ‘Bus Run’. Above is an idea for an advert, shown using thumbnails, It explains how the app would work.
These are the screens I’ve designed to show how you input your routes and buses and also the ‘race’ screens. I also created an icon for the menu screen on iPhones.
Branding Project This was a project run by a design agency called Uniform, based in Liverpool. Prior to the project they ran a workshop in which we learnt different ways to create new brands, or re-design existing ones. The brief involved creating an identity for one of three businesses. I chose to create a cleaning company based in the North West.
These are some of the methods that I learnt in the workshop put into practice for my cleaning company. I started by finding a niche in the market, mine being a company that specialises in cleaning cages, hutches, aquariums etc. To narrow down the target audience and the ways the company should run I used venn diagrams and brainstorms. I then had to develop a name, logo and tag line for the company.

Professional Development Part of the professional development module of this year was to partake in a group project based around designing a CD and vinyl cover for a folk band called ‘Big Eyes Family Players and Friends’.
We came up with many ideas as a group, but decided to settle on using photo or picture frames, as we felt this fitted well as the band name included the word ‘Family’ that it fitted well. We also chose to use some sort of handmade aesthetic to the cover, and decided cross stiching worked well, it kept the cover simple.
DMC Workshops This module consisted of three workshops based around Arduino, Isadora and Lasercutting. www.emergingtechnologie.tumblr.com
The brief for the lasercutting project was to create something inspired by the letter ‘D’. The first thought that came to me was 3D and lasercutting creates something three-dimensional.
Using Isadora, I came up with a concept to create interactive advertising, by using a person’s movement to display a poster or direction to a shop or restauraunt.
Using Arduino I designed a practical joke that could be played on people sitting down on a couch or bench in a public place. As you sit down, theres a pressure sensor on the seat that triggers one of four outcomes. These include being attacked by a virtual bear or showing a timer of how long you’ve been sitting down.
Live Projects I have produced a few designs for friends and family, one being a logo design for a paintball company and the other a business card for my father.
This is the logo I designed for the company, as they knew what they wanted it wasn’t too difficult to create. I’m also helping them design the website along with letterheads and business cards.

Liverpool Biennial Project Develop designs and present a proposal for a new visual identity for the Liverpool Biennial.
Using my experience of the last Liverpool Biennial, I created a maze, based around the fact that the festival is spread around all areas of Liverpool. I found myself lost on countless occasions trying to find various exhibitions.
I feel that the idea of the maze works well, I think it will help the identity stand out more as recently the festival isn’t very well advertised, despite being one of the biggest art festivals in Britain.
I created a short animation based around the logo; it can be found on at: youtu.be/VYO4BL2baYw
