Annual Report april 1, 2011 to march 31, 2012
On May 5th 2011, we celebrated the completion of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, which together comprise the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. This was a milestone day in our history, which would not have been possible without the generous support of our friends. Up to this point, research and education at St. Michael’s have never had a home of their own. Our people have been scattered across the Hospital; they’ve been in labs at the University of Toronto or anywhere we could find space. Now, thanks to your generosity, our researchers and educators have their own space. And it’s not just any space – it’s been specially designed by renowned architect Jack Diamond so they can share ideas with each other and collaborate with our team of education experts to move new treatments from bench to bedside faster than ever before. Think what that will mean for our patients and for the future of healthcare.
On the cover: The use of chalk and blackboards in our illustrations are to represent the worlds of the classroom and the laboratory (our critical links to education and research).

this year we realized a dream... This year we reached the end of an important journey that has spanned several years. Thanks to generous friends and committed volunteers, St. Michael’s has new facilities for research and education we can be proud of. The celebrations around the opening of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre were deeply satisfying, marking the culmination of many years’ work. And thank you to all of you who, through your gifts, make it possible for the dedicated physicians and staff of this Hospital to do all that they do. St. Michael’s is very important to me. I have often said this is a place unlike any other, set apart by a culture of care that is unique in Toronto and in Canada. I am proud of my association with this great Hospital. Here you find the best leadership, the best people and the best care.
This year we celebrated the completion of the Keenan Research Centre, the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, and the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre. I am deeply appreciative to all of those who supported this project. My special thanks go to Tony Arrell for his terrific leadership as Foundation Board Chair and to Mike Norris, our incoming Chair, and all the wonderful volunteers, staff and physicians who have helped us.
Although I am handing over the reins of the Foundation Board to Mike Norris, I am committed to helping St. Michael’s realize the next stage in its history. This is an exciting time in the life of this Hospital, and I look forward to moving forward on our next journey.
To our donors, thank you so much for your tremendous support. Now, together we have the opportunity to build a St. Michael’s that will be here to serve you and your family better and respond to the needs of future generations.
Thank you for your support.
THANK YOU! We could not do it without you.
Tony Arrell, Outgoing Chair

Recently I had the pleasure of attending a reception celebrating people who had either donated a kidney to a loved one or had received a donated kidney at St. Michael’s. I heard stories from family members who were so grateful for the physicians and staff who cared for them. It really reminded me why St. Michael’s is so treasured – it’s all about partnering to help the patients.
L. Alayne Metrick, FAHP, President
thanks to you! I would like to begin by thanking Tony Arrell for his leadership and dedication as the Chair of the Board of St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation. Tony is a passionate and committed leader, whose stewardship has left a lasting impact at St. Michael’s. St. Michael’s had a very successful year. We raised over $33 million in donations through your generosity, exceeding our budget by $5 million at a very competitive cost, 18¢ per dollar raised. We are very fortunate to have one of the very best fundraising teams in the country, with a real depth of talent through the ranks which positions us well for the future. As a fellow donor, I want to report that we take governance and our trustee roles very seriously. We are extremely fortunate to have one of the most experienced and highly regarded volunteer Board of Directors in Toronto. Their skill, experience and dedication are the key to continued success at the Foundation. Thank you for your financial support of St. Michael’s. We also hope that we can count on your support as we move forward on our campaign to fund world-class patient care.
Michael Norris, Chair

your support = our future With the opening of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, this has been an incredible year for the St. Michael’s family. Comprised of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, this facility has already proven itself to be a game changer in the way we deliver care. Government funding pays for much of our healthcare, but not all of it. The Hospital relies on donors like you to fund critical priorities like medical equipment, facility renovations, research and education. St. Michael’s continues to innovate boldly with the first fully integrated medical research and education facility anywhere in the province. Examples include Dr. Mike Evan’s wildly successful viral education video on the incredible value of exercise, and the only endowed Research Chair in Homelessness, Housing and Health anywhere in the world. Delivering compassionate and superior healthcare is something that our patients expect of us, their Urban Angel, and something we expect of ourselves. Thank you to our donors and our volunteers for helping St. Michael’s reach such great heights this past year. I hope you will join us as we look ahead to the next phase of our vision for the Hospital. Your support brings that vision to life.
Bob Howard, MD President & CEO, St. Michael’s Hospital

Why I Support St. Michael’s Rachel Dang “I chose to support St. Michael’s for a few reasons. First, I received care that surpassed my expectations. Second, I have never been hospitalized in my entire life. I often heard of services being impacted by the reduction of governmental funding, but I never really understood it. Having experienced medical care now, I understand how important it is for St. Michael’s to have adequate resources to carry out its mission.”
Larry Moodie “Through my experience with the Robert W. McRae Heart Health Unit staff, I know that a few good people can make a big difference in healthcare. Thanks to St. Michael’s, I was there when my children got married, and can now enjoy my two grandchildren.”
Krystal Fahie “I’m so grateful to Dr. Simon Kingsley – he took me seriously. He took the time to figure out what was wrong. Then he called a month later to make sure that everything was OK. I love St. Michael’s – the care is exceptional!”
8
David Cuthbertson “Not only was my fracture diagnosed quickly and compassionately, but the follow-up discovered and then dealt with the underlying problem of osteoporosis. I was impressed and grateful. I’m very happy to support the work they do at St. Michael’s.”
Nicole Muzzo “St. Michael’s is my hospital in so many ways. With the help of St. Michael’s and its wonderful physicians, I have survived two bouts of cancer and the loss of my voice. I am thankful and grateful I could be helped.”
James Nasso “Several of our people have been helped at St. Michael’s, and many of our children have been born here. Recently our General Counsel Greg Laing received fantastic care here. We want to say thanks to great physicians like Dr. Lee Errett who provided tremendous care and support.”
Simply, Thank You. 9
Your Gifts Help Us Do So Much More Government funding only does so much. Your gifts help us do more. Thanks to your generous support, we were able to provide nearly $21 million to St. Michael’s to support capital, equipment, research, education and clinical priorities. You helped us advance research in traumatic head injury and cardiac disease, purchase new digital mammography equipment for the CIBC Breast Centre, renovate the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic and develop an innovative program to teach young physicians how to treat inner city health issues. Your commitment also enabled us to establish endowed and term chairs in trauma and nursing research; homelessness, housing and health; and therapeutic endoscopy, which will provide new resources for our clinician-scientists. Thank you for your support. We couldn’t do it without you.

“St. Michael’s changed my life.” When Tammy Milgrom bent over to do laundry one day, she was suddenly in terrible pain. One of the discs in her spine had herniated. In spite of several procedures, the 27-year-old was unable to walk or to move without excruciating back pain. She was referred to Dr. Howard Ginsberg for treatment with the Hospital’s new Ziehm 3-D intra-operative scanner used for minimally invasive spinal surgery. Thanks to donor support, we are the first hospital in Canada to use this innovative technology which guides surgeons so they treat spinal problems without opening up a patient’s back. As a result, patients enjoy a faster and less painful recovery. Remarkably, although she had to be carried into the Hospital when she was admitted, Tammy was up and walking the day after the procedure. When she went for her follow-up visit, even Dr. Ginsberg was amazed at the speed of her recovery. “Dr. Ginsberg has changed my life,” she says. “I can’t imagine what my life would be like right now if I had not had that surgery. I cannot remember the last time I felt this good, felt so alive and felt back to my normal self. This means the world to me, and I have Dr. Ginsberg to thank!”

Education Opened the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre • The 5,800-square-foot simulation centre allows students and health-care workers from a wide range of disciplines to learn and practice new procedures in a risk-free environment. • The space can be transformed into an emergency trauma suite, intensive care unit, patient ward or even a mock rave party for training EMS workers, creating the same sense of urgency as a real-life experience. • Tele-simulation capabilities mean trainees can learn and practice at a distance. Procedures can also be broadcast anywhere in the world. Taking Patient Education On-line • We have developed a repository of ready-to-use patient education materials on over 3,000 health topics, available in up to eight languages to serve our diverse population. Opened the Patient & Family Learning Centre • To date, the centre has served over 1,500 visitors, empowering patients and their families with the information they need to make informed health decisions. Hosted the First International Conference on Faculty Development in Health Professions • Brought together international faculty development leaders and health science educators to share best practices and current research and build a global community of leaders in the field. • Featured over 260 papers from 28 countries. Launched a Cystic Fibrosis Telemedicine Clinic • Over 50 patients in remote areas of Ontario have benefitted from St. Michael’s specialized care.

“I am a St. Michael’s doctor and a grateful patient.” When the Chief of St. Michael’s Emergency, Dr. Glen Bandiera, needed rotator cuff surgery he looked no further than his colleagues in the orthopedics department. With a motorcycle accident in his past and the strains of playing recreational sports, Dr. Bandiera was experiencing increasingly limited mobility in his shoulder. Last summer an MRI showed the injury required attention before it became irreparable. Knowing that St. Michael’s has extensive experience with mobility injuries, he knew where to get care. Dr. Michael McKee operated successfully, and after four weeks with a shoulder brace, Dr. Bandiera returned to work in the ER with a wider range of motion than he had experienced in over a decade. The very same motorcycle accident that set off this chain of events originally sparked Dr. Bandiera’s interest in emergency medicine and trauma care. That fascination continues to drive his philosophy and his team’s work on improving patient care. “Life is a jigsaw puzzle – when someone comes to our Emergency Room that visit is just one piece of a larger treatment plan,” says Dr. Bandiera. “For my team in the Emergency Department, it’s not just about the time we spend with patients – it’s about how we impact their future path through the healthcare system.”
Glen Bandiera, MD Chief of St. Michael’s Emergency Department

Honouring Mentorship in Medicine
Left to right: Dr. Robert Hyland, David Gibson, David Glue, Jeff Olin, Patti Carmichael Pilon (Chair), Mac Borden (Vice Chair), Dr. Gordon Squires, Alex Squires, Alan Eaton, Dr. Anthony Graham. Absent: Debby Beatty, Betsy Lumbers-Chubb, Diane Mara (Vice Chair), Dr. Thomas Parker.
The Squires-Hyland Trust honours the legacy of one of Canada’s first hematologists, Dr. Arthur Squires, who was Physician-in-Chief of the Wellesley Hospital from 1955 to 1975. Dr. Squires was committed to furthering the “art” of medicine and believed in the importance of mentoring the next generation of physicians. In 2010, the Squires Trust became the Squires-Hyland Trust in recognition of Dr. Robert Hyland who was Physician-in-Chief at both the Wellesley Hospital and at St. Michael’s. The Squires-Hyland Trust recognizes physicians for practicing medicine with excellence and compassionate care and for teaching with distinction. The funds raised by the Trust support educational initiatives like sponsoring visiting professors and acknowledging

first-rate teachers and mentors. The Trust is also an ongoing sponsor of the annual St. Michael’s Urban Angels Philippines Mission, which treats people in remote areas of the Philippines who otherwise have little or no access to care. In 2011, the Trust donated $1 million to create the Squires-Chalmers Professorship, which will create an annual revenue stream to be used by the Physician-in-Chief of St. Michael’s Hospital to support the Department of Medicine for clinical work, research and teaching.
Simply, Thank You.
“our unique Culture of giving.” Over the past four years, the “Culture of Giving” program at St. Michael’s Hospital has succeeded in raising internal awareness of the value of fundraising, increased the number of dollars raised and increased the number of physician referrals. St. Michael’s has achieved a North American philanthropic record. In a remarkable demonstration of partnership, 100% of our physicians have contributed to a fundraising campaign for a third time. Last year, nine clinics piloted an initiative to encourage grateful patients and families to give back in recognition of the care they had received. The “Thx — Your support makes all the difference” campaign, playing on the Rx of prescription pads, was the next stage of this initiative and appeared on area-specific brochures and posters. This campaign is supported by a Hospital-wide poster campaign on the same theme. Large posters are on display in the main entrances, and smaller posters in waiting rooms throughout the Hospital. As well, small horizontal signs are part of all directional signage throughout the entire Hospital. Thank you to all our Culture of Giving partners, our dedicated physicians, staff and volunteers, for their time, energy and financial commitment. Your support really does make all the difference.
Robert Hyland, MD Medical Director of Philanthropy

“Thank you st. michael's.” Student, healthcare educator. Mother, grandmother. Tennis player, volunteer. Breast cancer survivor, chemo patient. Dr. Betty Power has led a rich and varied life. Now, 54 years after entering the St. Michael’s Nursing School, Dr. Power finds herself back at the Hospital, receiving cancer treatment. When Dr. Power graduated from nursing, she went on to earn a BScN and taught for some years before completing an MEd and a PhD. Then in 1990 she tested positive for breast cancer. She thought of her children: “I’m never going to see them graduate.” Dr. Power had a lumpectomy, removal of nodes and radiation. For 20 years all was fine, her children grew up and her career flourished. Then in 2010 a chronic cough turned out to be adenocarcinoma – the cancer was back. Now she comes to St. Michael’s every three weeks for chemotherapy, part of a clinical trial under the care of Dr. Christine Brezden-Masley. Says Dr. Power, "I cannot say enough fine things about the Medical Daycare Unit at St. Michael’s: they are my urban angels. They need to be in that new tower and I will do what I can to help. I also benefit from the fine research at the hospital as I am getting wonderful results and my disease has stabilized during my clinical trial. Thank you St. Michael’s!”

“St. Michael’s – my new family.” Returning home one night after hosting his radio program, broadcaster Tarek Fatah could no longer feel his legs. His wife Nargis convinced him to take an ambulance to St. Michael’s Emergency. Tests revealed that a cancerous tumour had collapsed on his spinal cord and was rapidly damaging his nervous system below the waist. Surgery was successful. However, because his doctors feared that the cancer had spread, he underwent chemotherapy and radiation. In time, the cancer went into remission. Because the tumour had wrapped itself around the spinal cord, there was residual nerve damage. Tarek was told that he would never walk again, but St. Michael’s Loch Macdonald disagreed, telling Tarek he would be out of that wheelchair in six months – and he was right. Without St. Michael’s, Tarek would never have been able to celebrate his 62nd birthday surrounded by family and friends or lecture at the Idea City conference or accept his 2011 Helen and Stan Vine Book Award. Tarek would not have been able to continue writing his weekly newspaper column, nor continue to host his radio show. “I look back on this past year not as a tragedy, but as a celebration,” he recalls. “It brought my family together and taught me so much about dignity and the human condition. I celebrated the best year of my life here surrounded by family, friends, and my new family – the staff of St. Michael’s.” Tarek Fatah, Patient and Donor and his daughter Natasha

the new way to learn
On October 28, 2011, we honoured the friends who made the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre a reality. As well as the Waters family who has given most generously for both the Simulation Centre and the Auditorium, we also received significant support from Karl Storz Endoscopy Canada Ltd. Building upon this, Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies made a transformative commitment to surgical simulation research.

Artist’s Conceptual Rendering of the Queen Victoria Redevelopment Project New Patient Tower
Our Future In life’s defining moments, people want to be at St. Michael’s because they know they will receive expert attention and compassionate care. Now we are preparing to build the St. Michael’s that will serve your future needs and those of your family. On November 29, 2011, the Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, announced the funding for a new patient care tower in the northeast corner of Victoria and Queen Streets. As a result, we will grow by 250,000 square feet and renovate 150,000 square feet of existing space. New features will include: • New operating rooms capable of incorporating the latest imaging equipment, which allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive, image-guided or catheter-based procedures as well as undertake open surgery in the same space • Improved in-patient facilities for orthopedic surgery, coronary care and respirology • An expanded emergency department to meet the needs of 75,000 patients a year “This new tower will transform patient care at St. Michael’s,” says Hospital President and CEO Dr. Robert Howard. “It will enable us to move patients out of hospital wings built as long as 85 years ago into modern, spacious units that have been specially designed to meet modern infection control standards and maximize the amount of time nurses and other healthcare workers spend with patients.” Our new expansion will provide our world-leading healthcare physicians and staff with the best contemporary facilities and tools to ensure the best outcomes.
The excitement is building. We appreciate your support
