A Message from Tony Arrell Dear Donors: You are indeed special people supporting a very special vision. St. Michael’s is a unique place, significantly different from other hospitals. Personally, I believe this is due to the strong culture of caring that is both practised and ingrained at the Hospital – a philosophy that is deeply rooted in the historic mission of St. Joseph and the Catholic Church. St. Michael’s is a vast, multi-faceted hospital with many activities going on at the same time. Not only is there general care taking place, but also very complex situations are referred to St. Michael’s specialists by doctors at other hospitals. At the same time, there is a large Emergency Department which welcomes all sorts of diverse situations – more than 60,000 last year, a fair percentage of which come from the inner core of Toronto. Some are very troubled and poor individuals, others from upscale Rosedale and Moore Park. One of our great strengths in Canada is that we have a healthcare system that pays for the basics of running our hospitals. It is a system that is envied by many other countries – but, as with most things, the system has its shortcomings. We are not funded at a level which would enable us to do many of the important initiatives that give the high quality of care that goes on at St. Michael’s. That is why we need your continued support through the Foundation. There are numerous examples of your “dollars at work” in the halls of the hospital, including but not limited to: • Funding equipment like the robot used for prostate surgery & gynecology ($5 million – all from private donations) • Facility upkeep and renovations like that of the Women’s Health Centre and lobby of 61 Queen Street East • Research initiatives including the new Keenan Research Centre and Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre which are devoted to research, knowledge translation and teaching • Research “Chairs” established to fund important work in Women’s Health, Multiple Sclerosis, Gastroenterology, etc. Let me say a word about the management of the Foundation. I work very closely with Alayne Metrick, President and CEO of our Foundation; I know from my experience that she is one of the most capable fundraising people in the country and we are very fortunate to have her. She is also thoughtful and wise when it comes to competing priorities and strategy. We are also fortunate that Alayne has attracted a strong staff who gives the whole fundraising effort at the Hospital a very strong momentum. As well, we have a very strong and dedicated volunteer structure, headed by a Board of Directors; they are generally very busy people and we are very grateful that they are willing to donate significant amounts of their time and their resources to help St. Mike’s be what it is. Attracting the best people to our Board is a crucial activity as strong directors give wise advice on strategy, fundraising investment and support to Alayne and her team. We appreciate the efforts of all the directors. Thank you all for your support. St. Mike’s could not be what it is without you.

My Urban Angel saved my life. It felt like a pulled muscle, and Krystal put off seeking medical help because she was young and fit and very busy with her role at an entertainment management company – work that included international travel. A pulled muscle, her GP assured her. But the pain continued, so she went to St. Michael’s ER, where she was seen by Dr. Simon Kingsley. She was given immediate injections to thin her blood, and was fast tracked to see a hematologist. Tests revealed that Krystal had blood clots in her lungs that could have been fatal. Thankfully, they were caught in time. DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s ER is the busiest of all the downtown hospitals, with over 62,000 visits last year, and deals with an unusually high volume of the very sick and the seriously injured.

A Message from Bob Howard What a privilege to lead this amazing Hospital! Every day I hear from patients about the excellent and compassionate care they received here at St. Michael’s. And it’s your support that makes this Hospital great. Thank you. While I’ve been president and CEO for just over two years, I’m only a year away from being at St. Michael’s for three decades. I can’t begin to tell you how much has changed over those intervening years, both in the practice of medicine and here at the Hospital. While continuing to honour our founding promise to the disadvantaged, St. Michael’s has flourished as a complex care facility, offering leading-edge treatment across a number of specialties. As the downtown trauma centre, we are experts at treating the severely injured and the critically ill. We have grown into a major research and education centre, and, thanks to generous support from donors like you, we were able to build the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre and the Keenan Research Centre, which together comprise the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, a beautiful new structure designed to inspire collaboration among researchers and educators. Advances in research will benefit not only our patients, but offer hope to those around the globe. Quality is a key priority at St. Michael’s. We do great work, day in and day out, but every procedure is a learning experience, and we strive continuously to improve the quality of patient care. We’re on the right track because patient satisfaction surveys are higher than ever. Through the use of a balanced scorecard and rigorous controls, we also succeeded in reducing wait times in our ER and for surgical procedures while improving patient outcomes. Our patient flow program is regarded as a model by the province for other hospitals. And we did all this on budget. We do great work, but we need your help. An aging population will mean more patient volumes at a time when government spending is slowing down. Your invaluable donations support new technology, facility renovations, vital research and education activities that all translate into better patient care. Your donations create the margin of excellence that makes this Hospital great – 25,000 of you and counting! As members of the St. Michael’s family, your support advances excellence across this great hospital. Thank you for giving us the tools to help patients and their families.

My Urban Angel let me see my daughter’s birth. A potentially fatal stroke almost cost Jerome Forde his life. Surgeon Dr. Julian Spears says Jerome was the “healthiest man to ever have a stroke” – at the age of 23. Dr. Spears performed emergency decompressive brain surgery to relieve the swelling that would otherwise have killed him. Over the next two years, complications meant more surgeries. The last surgery replaced a portion of Jerome’s skull with a custom-fabricated plate. “I am so grateful to St. Michael’s. Thanks to Dr. Spears and Dr. Michael Cusimano and the whole team, I was there to see my daughter come into this world. Makayla is now two, and I just can’t imagine not being a part of her life.” DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s Hospital is a regional stroke centre for southeast Toronto.

A Message from L. Alayne Metrick 25,000 donors – helping to achieve one vision at St. Michael’s: the best possible patient care. I’ve been fundraising for 25 years now, and what has impressed me most in that period of time is the true power of the individual. By volunteering or by giving, one person can make a difference. And when many people come together in support of one vision, the impact of their contribution can be tremendous. At St. Michael’s, we have always been fortunate to have the help and support of a committed family of donors and volunteers, now numbering approximately 25,000. Thank you! Over the past fiscal year, we have seen the realization of a number of goals, thanks to your generous commitment: • • • • • •
We were able to complete and open our renovated Women’s Health Centre and lobby at 61 Queen Street East. We were able to create an endowed Chair in Women’s Health to advance research in this priority area. The first Chair-holder will be announced soon. We were able to acquire a 3D navigational system for spinal surgery. St. Michael’s is now the first in Canada to offer this latest technology for care to our patients. We were able to see the results of three years of treatment with the robotic surgical system, helping more than 300 patients since its arrival. We were able to set a new record in fundraising support for our Mission to the Philippines, thanks largely to the efforts of one dedicated volunteer and many special donors. And we were able to create an endowed Chair in one of our premier programs, the McCain Chair in Therapeutic Endoscopy, which will enable us to recruit a world leader.
In all of these examples – and there are many, many more – individuals came together to give their time and their resources for the benefit of our patients. For all your gifts, whatever the size, we are grateful. For all of the time, energy and passion that you share with us in building a better St. Michael’s, we are truly appreciative. For supporting our collective vision, thank you. In the coming year, we will be talking to you about our on-going quest in striving to always make things better for our patients. First on our list will be the renovation of our Emergency department – an exciting peek into the future of St. Michael’s. In the next months, you will hear more about how our Emergency department will be able to serve you better. As always, I would be delighted to hear from you. You are the link that helps us to support innovation and excellence and deliver compassionate care. Thank you again for your valued support. Together we will continue to build the best Hospital. With best wishes,
L. Alayne Metrick, FAHP President, St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation

My Urban Angel made me healthy again. Last year, Tracy Oxtoby was diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr. Ralph George performed several surgeries to remove the tumour, while oncologist Dr. Christine Simmons saw Tracy through six sessions of chemotherapy. She says Dr. George and Dr. Simmons have put her on a new journey. Tracy now lives a healthy life and shares her story to inspire others to help people with cancer. DID YOU KNOW? We are one of only four hospitals in the GTA performing endoscopic ultrasound procedures, primarily to diagnose and treat cancer.

My Urban Angel gave me back my voice. A seizure at summer camp, an intubation tube, air transport to the ICU – that’s the sequence that left Rachel short of breath and unable to speak above a whisper. Going into her final year of high school, life was on hold and she was worried about her future. St. Michael’s Hospital has one of the few voice disorders specialists in Canada. Dr. Jennifer Anderson operated to remove a web of scar tissue from Rachel’s vocal cords. Now Rachel is getting on with her life. DID YOU KNOW? At St. Michael’s, Dr. Jennifer Anderson and two speech language pathologists treat over 2,000 patients each year.

A Special Tribute
St. Michael’s this year said goodbye to three men who were dedicated to improving care for our patients. We are sincerely
G. Wallace McCain “Wallace McCain was a tremendous visionary and inspiring leader who had a deep admiration and great respect for the work of staff and physicians at St. Michael’s. He will be sorely missed by the entire St. Michael’s family and his legacy and contribution to St. Michael’s will not be forgotten.” - Hospital President and CEO Dr. Robert Howard
A member of the board of directors for both the Hospital and the Foundation, Wallace McCain worked tirelessly to make Hospital priorities a reality. In addition to his board responsibilities, to which he brought great insight and advice, he helped launch a fundraising campaign for the new surgical robotic device with a $1 million lead donation. Thanks to McCain’s efforts, the Hospital became the first in Toronto to purchase the robot and perform surgery using this groundbreaking technology. He also supported the renovation to our Women’s Health Centre. Again, in 2011, Wallace and Margaret McCain donated $5 million to the Hospital’s therapeutic endoscopy program in honour of physician Dr. Paul Kortan and his colleagues. The donation will allow St. Michael’s to recruit a world-class physician-researcher for the program — one of the largest and most advanced in Canada. This individual will hold the Wallace and Margaret McCain Chair in Therapeutic Endoscopy. A valued member of the St. Michael’s family.

grateful for all they did for this Hospital and are honoured to count them part of the St. Michael’s Hospital family. Thank you.
R. Donald Fullerton “Don Fullerton was a tremendous supporter of the work of St. Michael’s Hospital. He was especially committed to ensuring that St. Michael’s grew as a place for innovation in care and as a site of knowledge translation, helping to bring best healthcare research discoveries and practices to the bedside faster than before.” – Alayne Metrick, President, St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation. Originally associated with the Wellesley Hospital, Don generously served St. Michael’s as both a volunteer on and a donor to several campaigns. A proud advocate of the Hospital’s mission, Don supported programs like the Heart & Vascular Program and as a dedicated member of the Advancing care Every day Campaign Cabinet, he was also instrumental in facilitating the commitment of the Li Ka Shing Foundation to the creation of the Knowledge Institute. A true friend of St. Michael’s.
Louis “Bud” Odette “Louis Odette’s championship of the best patient care was a wonderful gift to those who need our help. His generosity was evident throughout St. Michael’s and in the care that our patients receive, thanks to his support of innovative equipment and the urology program.” – Dr. John Honey, Head, Division of Urology, St. Michael’s Hospital Bud’s generosity supported many initiatives, including helping to bring the first advanced robotics system to the GTA, supporting women’s health, expanding our Trauma & Neurosurgery ICU and building our Heart Health Unit. The Louis Odette Family Neurointerventional Angiography Suite, which offers minimally invasive procedures to treat stroke and aneurysms, attests to his commitment to provide the most up-to-date resources for patient care. A genuine partner with St. Michael’s in advancing healthcare.
St. Michael’s Foundation Annual Report 2011 - 21
My Urban Angel uses the latest technology. Thanks to the generosity of long-time friend of St. Michael’s Marjorie Waters, Drs. Howard Ginsberg, Satoru Tochigi and Henry Ahn are the first in Canada to use the new Ziehm 3-D minimally invasive navigational system for spinal procedures. Like a GPS for the spine, this innovative technology guides surgeons so they can place screws during spinal fusion procedures with complete accuracy without having to expose the spine. Having this technology means patients can avoid open surgery and benefit from a better and faster recovery. DID YOU KNOW? Our Neurophysiology Laboratory is the largest in Canada. We see about 8,000 patients annually with neurological disorders that affect the brain, nerves or muscles.

EBUS Arrives
A group of donors, including William James, D. Edward Macklin and Tim Griffin, made it possible for us to acquire the innovative Endo-Bronchial Ultrasound (EBUS). For our patients, it means an earlier, safer and less invasive diagnosis of respiratory problems. We are the only site in Toronto that provides EBUS to our respirology team, as well as our endoscopists, for diagnosis and treatment.
Physicians, Hospital staff and donors including Tim Griffin, Ted Macklin, Anastasia Clavelle, Helen Macklin, Bill James and Louise Powis celebrate the arrival of EBUS at St. Michael’s.

My Urban Angel got me back in the game. It was the final game of the all-Ontario rugby tournament. Gareth, son of long-time St. Michael’s Hospital Board member and friend Wendy Cecil, was captain at the time and in line for Athlete of the Year. But in the second half of the game, Gareth got into a collision he didn’t get up from — a tackle that crushed his right foot and potentially his ability to walk normally again. That prognosis changed after he met world-leading foot and ankle specialist Dr. Timothy Daniels. He performed corrective surgery that had Gareth walking again in three months and back on the rugby field in top form. The care he received reaffirmed why Gareth’s family supports St. Michael's. DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s does more foot and ankle replacements than anywhere else in the world. St. Michael’s Foundation Annual Report 2011 - 27

My Urban Angel gave me back my sight. “When you’re faced with losing your sight,” says Chris Purkis, “fear takes over.” But St. Michael’s Hospital ophthalmologist-in-chief Dr. Alan Berger got him through it. After surgery to correct several vision problems, including detached retinas in both eyes, Chris’s vision is now better. He supports St. Michael’s Hospital and the work of Dr. Berger. “There’s a feeling of calm when you walk into his office. Dr. Berger has the balance you want in a doctor – highly developed technical ability and great interpersonal skills.” DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s Retinal Service is the largest of its kind in Canada, seeing 25,000 patients annually.

Quality Comes First
The Hospital Board raised $300,000 to support president and CEO Bob Howard’s focus on quality improvement. An anonymous donor matched this support and offered a further matching challenge for the next two years. This donor also made a very generous gift of $1 million to support the Chair in Trauma Research.

Our Culture of Giving program, which encourages giving from grateful patients, appeared throughout the Hospital by means of our Foundation newsletter, our new website, our staff newsletter and posters telling inspiring care stories.
St. Michael’s Foundation Annual Report 2011 - 33
My Urban Angel got me off the street. When Wayne came to the St. Michael’s Family Health Centre on Bond Street, he was hearing voices in his head due to undiagnosed and untreated schizophrenia. Wayne’s mental illness was slowly overtaking his life, and he was now desperate and suicidal. Then he arrived at St. Michael’s. He was impressed that the healthcare team never judged him. Instead, everyone was compassionate and caring. Now his condition is under control – he’s got a job and his own apartment. “I received very good care and I feel good. If it wasn’t for St. Michael’s, I’d be in jail. Or dead,” says Wayne. DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s is the only hospital in Toronto – and the first in Canada – to create an Inner City Health Program which has inspired others to follow our lead.

Jocelyn and John Barford, Founders
Each year we pay tribute to our most committed benefactors, those whose support totals $1 million or more at our Founders’ reception. This year we honoured volunteers Jocelyn and John Barford. John is on our Foundation Board and is chair of the Endowment Committee. Jocelyn was on our Women’s Health Committee that raised the funds to establish a Chair in Women’s Health. Now they have made a lead gift to fund a Chair in Homelessness and Health – a priority that John is leading.

Acknowledging Commitment Dr. John Honey received the Dr. John Honey Foundation’s Spirit of Philanthropy with wife Sarah. Award for the care that has inspired his patients to give. In particular, he was a driving force behind our fundraising initiative to bring the robotic surgical system to the Hospital.
My Urban Angel keeps me fighting. Peter Roy says his foot was “blacker than the ace of spades”. Severe hardening of the arteries limited blood flow to his left leg. The only way to save Peter was to amputate his leg. Vascular surgeon Dr. Alan Lossing has operated nine times to save his right leg… and his life. Peter has made a donation to St. Michael’s to honour Dr. Lossing and nurses like Ruth De Silva who have taken care of him for 17 years. Peter says Dr. Lossing is his superman – he won’t quit. DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s manages approximately 35,000 surgical cases each year.

Extending the Reach of the Urban Angel
While commanding a military vehicle in Afghanistan, Corporal Michael Blois suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the impact he sustained from the vehicle being repeatedly hit over a four-hour period with rockets. He received care at St. Michael’s under Dr. Donna Ouchterlony, chief of our Head Injury Clinic. At St. Michael’s, donors help advance the work of specialists like Dr. Andrew Baker, chief of critical care and a researcher in the Brain Injury Laboratory, neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Cusimano and Dr. Ouchterlony. It’s still not entirely known what impact an explosion has on the brain. However, with the help of individuals like you, our team can get closer to understanding the effects and long-term consequences of these injuries. Michael has bravely shared his experience at several Hospital events to raise awareness about the great work that donor support makes possible.
FAST FACT St. Michael’s Head Injury Clinic sees about 1,400 patient visits each year.

My Urban Angel gave me back my life. When Rameza Hirsimaki was first admitted to St. Michael’s Hospital, her prospects were not good. Complications of mild lupus nephritis had turned into the possibility of complete organ failure. Fortunately, she recovered enough for a kidney transplant, and her mother proved to be a match. After a successful transplant procedure and with care overseen by Dr. Jeffrey Zaltzman, Rameza has returned to doing ordinary things, like going back to school, getting married and buying a house. DID YOU KNOW? St. Michael’s was the first in Ontario and the second in Canada to offer laparoscopic surgery for live donor transplants.
