to our valued donors It’s time for a celebration! On April 17, 2015, shovels in hand, we joined provincial Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins and members of our St. Michael’s family to officially break ground for the hospital-wide transformation that is Inspire 2018. It is amazing what a difference a short year makes. Now, the foundation has been poured and a crane that towers over the hospital operates daily. It’s exciting to see the progress of the building rising out of the ground. We accomplished this together with you, our donors and friends, and this moment of celebration belongs to you.

So many people have helped us reach this moment in St. Michael’s history.

Most of all, we are grateful to you, our donors, for your generous support. Your contribution to Inspire 2018 is making our future come true. Because of you, we didn’t just meet our campaign target of $210 million, we surpassed it. We raised an amazing $235 million! Your commitment means we are well placed to meet the challenge of increasing demand for services while continuing to deliver the first-class compassionate care you have come to expect at this hospital. Your support will transform care throughout St. Michael’s and affirm our role as Canada’s premier critical care hospital.

We are also appreciative of the approval for the project from the Government of Ontario. This vote of confidence and financial backing in difficult times is recognition of the critical importance of our most recent evolution to grow with the city around us. Our committed volunteers, led by our Inspire 2018 Campaign Co-Chairs Tony Arrell, John Cassaday and Bill Downe, along with former Co-Chair John Tory, who stepped down on becoming Mayor of Toronto, Honorary Chair Margaret McCain and our Campaign Cabinet have, on top of their busy lives, made it a priority to give time to our cause and enlist other supporters. 10 Lorrayne Enjoying a successful career as a lifestyle journalist, Lorrayne began, shockingly, to struggle. The mother of two was now exhausted, her mind cloudy. The startling diagnosis: multiple sclerosis. She was referred to St. Michael’s, known for its expertise in treating neurological issues.

If patients like Lorrayne were ever to experience complications associated with MS, they will receive advanced care in our new Neurology Inpatient Unit supported by donors to Inspire 2018.

Thanks to Dr. Spears, Dr. Ginsberg and St. Michael ’s, I was able to return to doing the charity work that I love – I even went to Honduras twice last year to volunteer!

I finally have my life back.

15 Joanne Joanne could barely walk. When an MRI revealed a problem in her neck, she was sent to St. Michael’s for help.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Julian Spears performed surgery to relieve pressure on her spinal cord. Dr. Howard Ginsberg fused several of the vertebrae along Joanne’s spine together.

Now Joanne can travel with her sons and enjoy life again.

Thanks to Inspire 2018, we will have a new, expanded Medical Imaging Department to analyze problems, like Joanne’s, and help speed up treatment.

St. Mike ’s has always been there for me.

It s’ the most compassionate hospital in the city of Toronto. The staff and volunteers are one-in-a-million. I hope my legacy gift inspires others to remember St. Michael ’s in their will.

20 Carole It was seven words, but Carole remembers them all too well: “You have a tumour in your breast.” Extremely anxious, she put her faith in St. Michael’s CIBC Breast Centre.

Dr. Ralph George and his team operated successfully.

Today, fully recovered, Carole has never felt luckier, enjoying nature and looking after her pets.

Thanks to our Inspire 2018 donors, the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower will house a larger Oncology Inpatient Unit to help people like Carole.

I owe my life to St. Michael ’s. I don’t want to think about what life would be like without this hospital, or if there would even be a life to talk about.

27 Ryan Ryan was an engineering student just one exam away from completing his first year at the University of Toronto when he accidently walked into a moving streetcar. Critically injured, he was rushed to an operating room at St. Michael’s where he was treated by neurosurgeon Dr. Loch Macdonald and his team.

Now recovered, he works for a private equity firm and leads an active lifestyle – golfing, skiing and hiking.

Thanks to Inspire 2018, St. Michael’s will have eight state-of-the-art operating rooms to help people like Ryan who need the best care in the most timely way.

38 Sheilagh New Year’s Day. Already suffering from glaucoma, Sheilagh’s left eye was swollen shut with a terrible infection.

Sheilagh feared she would go blind. Returning to St. Michael’s, she saw Dr. Neeru Gupta, who did a novel procedure to preserve her sight. Now Sheilagh can continue to enjoy reading to her grandson Nolan.

Through Inspire 2018, St. Michael’s will create the new Donald and Nita Reed Ophthalmology Centre to provide the best vision care to patients like Sheilagh.

I am grateful to be alive. Fully recovered, I can return to my regular life, including my gym routine, for which I want to thank the St. Michael s’ team.

43 Renay Renay was always healthy, until she developed respiratory issues.

After a very bad asthma attack, when even her puffer provided no relief, Renay’s allergist told her she had to go to a hospital.

She went to St. Michael’s Emergency Department. Five days later Renay was discharged, fully recovered and grateful to be alive.

Inspire 2018 will create the new Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation Respirology Unit designed to meet the unique needs of patients like Renay.

I was terrified. My husband was away, but thanks to St. Michael ’s I didn’t feel alone – they were my family. The staff helped me to become the best mom possible. We are so grateful for the care we received then and still receive at St. Michael ’s pediatric clinic.

46 Chartreuse Seven months pregnant, Chartreuse’s blood pressure skyrocketed. She and her baby were at risk for devastating complications. Born two months early, Nolitha weighed less than one pound and needed the life-saving care that St. Michael’s Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit could offer.

Now, mother and daughter happily play.

Each day I count my blessings – grateful for the milestone events I ’m able to share with my family: I am so thankful for the care I received from Dr. David Latter and his St. Mike s’ team.

59 Dorothy Shopping in the Eaton Centre, Dorothy’s vision went blurry.

Suddenly it felt like the entire weight of the building had collapsed on her chest. Rushed to St. Michael’s, surgeons performed emergency triple bypass surgery to save her life. Her husband says it was the worst day of his life. Dorothy believes it was the best – St. Michael’s gave her a second chance.

Thanks to Inspire 2018 donors, patients like Dorothy will be cared for in our state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit in the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower.

I am grateful for the amazing care I got. I believe it was the best I could get anywhere. But I am more grateful for what I saw there: just how St. Mike ’s makes Toronto a more compassionate, caring, inclusive and decent place.

Last year while travelling, Jaime developed what seemed to be a harmless blister on his foot. Harmless it wasn’t. Within four days, Jaime’s doctor said he had a “limb-threatening infection.”

Rushed to St. Michael’s Emergency Department, he was treated and fitted with an air-cast so he could keep active during recovery.

Jaime was fortunate. Patients who are dealing with more severe mobility issues or have had hip, knee and ankle procedures will recover in a new Orthopedic Inpatient Unit that extends into the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower.
