We are SMYL, a fresh face in fundraising. As St. Michael’s Young Leaders, we offer a different approach to helping our city. We’re a group of young professionals proudly supporting the Inner City Health program at St. Michael’s Hospital and our end goal is to raise funds, awareness, and hope for some of Toronto’s most imperative initiatives. We appreciate you taking the time to hear us out.

This is not a brochure, this is a first step. 2 St. Michael’s Young Leaders

A step towards helping another at-risk mother get the care she deserves. A step towards helping equip downtown Toronto with more of the medical resources it needs. A step towards change. Yes, like a brochure this will introduce who we are, what we do, and why we do it. But if you connect with us, this can become so much more. This can become the first step to initiating a real difference in Toronto. We urge you to read on, but if you want to connect immediately, all the necessary information can be found on the last page of this brochure first step.

“ I am personally delighted with the evolution of the St. Michael’s Young Leaders. From a few bright and enthusiastic supporters raising several thousand dollars, to a large and highly organized team committed to raising $1 million for the Inspire 2018 Campaign; what a great success story! St. Michael’s is very grateful.”

Robert Howard, MD MBA President and Chief Executive Officer, St. Michael’s Hospital

A Message from our Leadership

St. Michael’s is fortunate to have such ardent champions in our Young Leaders. Embodying the next generation of philanthropists, this group of young professionals continue to impress with their unwavering dedication to supporting the hospital’s most urgent priorities. It is a critical need of our city to raise funds for programs like Inner City Health that provide care to Toronto’s disadvantaged population. The St. Michael’s Young Leaders have taken up this cause and are ambassadors of the hospital’s commitment to compassionate care. They are raising awareness amongst their peer group and their networks to provide support for innovative hospital research programs that are changing the lives of those who are less fortunate. They are the next generation, changing the face of our volunteer community. It has been a pleasure watching the Young Leaders grow and develop over the last few years. With their support, there really is no limit on what we can achieve together – for you, your family, and the best possible patient care at St. Michael’s. Sincerely,

L. Alayne Metrick, FAHP President, St. Michael’s Foundation

Sounds great, but what exactly does SMYL do? 8 St. Michael’s Young Leaders

In a few words, we raise money. And we do this for unique and necessary hospital initiatives. But in more than a few words, we do a variety of things...

We provide Funding to doctors, nurses, and other health care providers. We build connections between tomorrow’s leaders and those who need help today. We promote community and continue to develop an ever-growing culture of giving back. We spend smart as evidenced by SMYL’s $0.27 cost per dollar since inception. We get together at our annual Duffer (golf), Dodger (dodgeball), and Giver (gala) events.

SMYL 9

SMYL Events The Giver is SMYL’s flagship event. Started in 2008, this fall gala has continually featured beautiful venues and beautiful people, always in support of a beautiful cause.

10 St. Michael’s Young Leaders

The Duffer as the name suggests, is all about bad golf for a great cause. Since 2011, this tournament has established itself as one of the best reasons to take a day off work, if you need one.

The Dodger is an annual costumed charity dodgeball event. You know, one of those things. Since 2009, this one-of-a-kind tournament has been un-missable, unpredictable, and entirely unforgettable.

SMYL Supported Programs The Baby Passport Program

Every year in Toronto over 300 infants are born to homeless women, many without access to prenatal support. To help these at-risk mothers and infants, St. Michael’s Hospital created the innovative My Baby and Me Passport Program that offers much needed medical and practical services. It’s an award-winning program that we are proud to support and one that operates on a small scale while making a big impact in the lives of new mothers.

14 St. Michael’s Young Leaders

The Baby Simulator

There’s a reason pilots spend hours in simulation before actually operating an aircraft. It’s because flying, much like infant care, is incredibly complex. For this reason, we helped fund a life-sized, computer operated infant mannequin that teaches healthcare providers how to care for children. It’s a ground-breaking addition to the hospital and one that is changing the way we care for Toronto’s infants.

The Baby Tuck Shop

Every child deserves access to diapers, toiletries, and even toys. Unfortunately, many mothers in Toronto are unable to provide their newborns with these essential items. And so the Baby Tuck Shop was born. This extension of the Baby Passport Program offers at-risk mothers an opportunity to “shop” for free items both they and their children need. It’s another SMYL funded project that leads to happier and healthier mothers and babies.

“ SMYL have been tremendous supporters of Women’s and Inner City Health. They are the biggest funders of the Baby Passport Program and their grant to the Baby Tuck Shop allowed us to make the much-needed resource a reality. These initiatives are making big differences in the lives of families at St. Michael’s and we are extremely grateful for SMYL’s ongoing support.” manda Hignell and Marisa Cicero A Women’s Health Care Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital
