REFLECT Alumnae and Alumni in the news 2015 Day-Garrett Awards Katherine Gabel The 2015 Day-Garrett Award was presented to Katherine Gabel, a leader and scholar who has had an immeasurable impact on our School for Social Work and on social work organizations across the country. Smith College alumna Katherine Gabel served as dean of the School for Social Work from 1976 to 1985, and the School was extraordinarily lucky to have her as a leader during those years. She came in at a time of transition for the School. It was with her leadership and vision that very important changes were made to the School enabling it to maintain its reputation as a leader in clinical social work education and to thrive. Gabel addressed graduates at the 2015 commencement. In her remarks she stated, "The breadth and depth of a social work education prepares you in a way you currently can not imagine. Great mentors from all walks of life can inform and teach you and challenge you to 'move outside the box'. Be creative in your thinking and practice. Take the risks that you are initially uncertain you can handle, or that you are told are not social work. For example; Being a legislator or running for political office is not social work. Being an executive is not social work. Challenging policy is not social work. I am here to tell you that it is all social work. Go forward and conquer! Blaze a path and Enjoy!"

Marian Harris Also receiving the award was Marian Harris-an educator, scholar, and alumna, who has contributed so much to the field of social work and has given back so much through her numerous roles at the School for Social Work. Harris is a Smith College School for Social Work doctoral program alumna, whose work has focused on child welfare and how it responds to the needs of children and birth parents in the system. She has a particular interest in the disproportionate number of children of color who remain stuck in the child welfare system. Before coming to Smith, Harris received her Bachelor's degree from Florida A&M University in 1964 and her MSW from Florida State University in 1977. Harris chose Smith's doctoral program for its focus on clinical training, knowing it would enrich her research. While here, she distinguished herself by earning a Bertha Capen Reynolds Fellowship and the Roger R. Miller Dissertation Grant. After completing her PhD, Harris's work took her to the University of Wisconsin for postdoctoral training and to a position at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She currently teaches at the University of Washington, Tacoma, and has held associate positions at the University of Washington, Seattle, the University of Chicago, and Chapin Hall Center for Children, as well as Smith College. Each summer, the Smith College School for Social Work brings leading scholars in social work and related fields to campus for our Public Lecture Series in Social Work (formerly the Summer Lecture Series). This year, we asked our guest lecturers to speak with members of our faculty about their work. The PLS 2015 Video Interview Series captures these conversations, ranging from 17 to 30 minutes in length. Supporting Research in the Broader Social Work Community The Clinical Research Institute at SSW is poised to generate new investigations among doctoral students from the broader social work academic community as funds become available. For the current cycle, the priority will be research on interpersonal violence in same-sex relationships. This theme was developed with a gift from an MSW class of 1991 alumna, Laurie Peter, and her partner, Betsy Bernard.
