Lakers already know

Smith Mountain Lake is an exceptional place to live, work and play. Residents and visitors are drawn to the area for its natural beauty, recreational opportunities, friendly business climate and overall outstanding quality of life. But what about those not lucky enough to know about our little slice of heaven? That’s where the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce comes in. Each year, the Chamber produces a Newcomer and Visitor Guide, one of the many communication tools the organization uses to promote Smith Mountain Lake far and wide. The Chamber chose Laker Media as its publishing partner for 2012. In April, we were excited to introduce the new issue, the product of nearly a year of work by a talented corps of writers, photographers, sales professionals, designers, editors and proofers, including Chamber Executive Director Vicki Gardner (pictured above with me). Over the next year, 40,000 copies of the Guide will be distributed at visitor centers across Virginia and mailed nationwide to those who request it by phone or via the Chamber’s website, visitsmithmountainlake.com. That’s also where you’ll find a digital version of the publication complete with interactive videos, links to advertiser websites and more. The guide contains numerous stories and content even the most seasoned Lakers will find interesting, too, including information on boating, fishing, watersports, dining, shopping, arts, health and fitness. Pick up a copy at the Visitor Center at Bridgewater Plaza or in one of many racks around SML where the Laker is distributed. Of course, the May/June issue of the Laker is full of exciting content, as well. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live at Bridgewater Pointe, turn to page 18 for a peek inside the lovely condo of Larry and Kathy Sultze. We also have our Summer Fun Guide starting on page 45, which includes a story on sailing at SML and another on ways to maximize fun on the water without breaking the bank. And if you plan on boating to one of the lake’s 19 waterfront restaurants, you’ll want to take along our handy Dock & Dine guide, which begins on page 73. There’s so much to catch up on at Smith Mountain Lake, so find a quiet – preferably lakeside – spot and get reading!

travels | TAKE THE LAKER WITH YOU

Antarctica

Joe and Pat Vipperman of Moneta took the Laker last December to Antarctica, the only continent readers had yet to travel with the magazine since our “Take the Laker” feature began in 2007. “We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and wanted to do it in an unusual and fun way,” said Joe Vipperman, the retired president of Appalachian Power for whom the recently remodeled visitors center at Smith Mountain Dam is named.

Austria In January and February, Jerry and Irene Edwards of Wirtz visited Alpbach, a village in the state of Tyrol in western Austria. Irene, a native of Germany, said the couple has taken the trip annually for the past 35 years. Alpbach, known for its floral beauty, excellent skiing and clean air, is located at an elevation of 3,200 feet.

Eastern Mediterranean Barbara and Ken Dice of Moneta cruised the Eastern Mediterranean last October. Originating in Rome, the trip also took the couple to Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes in Greece, as well as Ephesus, Turkey and Taormina, Sicily. They stopped for this photo in Sorrento, Italy, with Naples in the background.

China Franklin County native Matt Puzio took the Laker to China where he posed for this photo at the Great Wall. A May graduate of UNC Greensboro with a degree in International Business, Puzio participated in the study abroad program last semester, spending a semester in Hong Kong. While there he had the opportunity to visit numerous Asian countries, according to proud dad Ted Puzio.

Czech Republic Debbie and Jim Mould of Moneta spent last Christmas visiting with family in Nuremburg, Germany. The couple also traveled to Prague, Czech Republic, where they took this photo with the Laker in front of the Charles Bridge. The bridge, which crosses the Vltava River, was started in 1357 with the backing of King Charles IV, and was completed at the beginning of the 15th century.

travels | TAKE THE LAKER WITH YOU

Sam and Jeanette Garst of Moneta spent 11 days last December in Orlando, Fla., with their daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jim McGuire, and their four children, Bradley, Brian, Tyler and Ashley of Winchester. The family visited Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and the Magic Kingdom, where they posed with the Laker for this photo. Jeanette said the evening light shows were highlights of the trip. “Hollywood Studios lit up the sky on Christmas Eve with over 5 million lights put to music, and enhanced with a bit of ‘snow,’” she said.

Disney Anguilla A quintet Lakers took the magazine with them to the island of Anguilla in the British West Indies. From left are Rosemary Traylor, Butch Traylor, Lorne Kaufman, Jennifer Lamanca and Whitney Bowles. In the background is the island of Saint Martin. The friends were in the tropical locale to celebrate Lorne and Jennifer’s wedding on Nov. 11, 2011.

Cuba Greg Winn of Penhook visited the Floridita Bar and Restaurant while in Havana, Cuba, last October where he posed with his Laker for this photo beside a sculpture of Ernest Hemingway created by Cuban artist José Villa Soberón. Winn said the restaurant was a favorite stop for the famed writer when he lived in Cuba in the 1930s and 40s.

Colorado Last November, Gail and Curtis Young of Union Hall hiked a portion of the 360 miles of trails that make up Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. In the background of this photo are Hallett Peak and Flat Top Mountain, two of the more than 60 named peaks within the park that measure over 12,000 feet. The couple said the park “is referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’ just as beautiful Smith Mountain Lake is the ‘Jewel of the Blue Ridge.’”

Scotland Larry and Joyce Horne and Sally and Ron Roseveare traveled to Scotland in September where they visited Sally’s ancestral castle, Balnagown. Originally built as a fortress by the clan Ross in the 1300s, the castle fell into disrepair after the last Ross laird died in the 1940s. Restoration began after it was purchased in 1972 by Mohammed Al-Fayed, father of Dodi Fayed, the man killed along with Princess Diana in a 1997 car wreck.

ridgewater Pointe was the topic of much questioning and controversy when it was first proposed in the mid-2000s. Now, the six-story condominium tower – one of two originally planned at Hales Ford Bridge – stands as a landmark, an integral part of the Smith Mountain Lake landscape. The frequent question among locals and visitors today is: “Does anyone really live there?” According to Bart Mathhie, a member of the condo’s board of directors, the answer is a resounding “yes.” All but one of the 48 units has been sold, and 12 are occupied full time. “There are many ‘weekenders’ who come throughout the year,” Matthie said. “And, of course, during the summer season the occupancy rate jumps, especially for the big holiday weekends.”

BELOW LEFT The back deck offers a long water view down the Roanoke River channel and of Smith Mountain in the distance.

MAKING THEIR MOVE

Larry and Kathy Sultze are among those who make their permanent home at Bridgewater Pointe. The couple purchased their unit in June 2010 during a lottery sale organized by Prudential Waterfront Properties, a division of The Willard Companies, which took over marketing of the project after the original developers defaulted on a multimilliondollar loan in 2008. At the lottery, the Sultzes drew a number that offered them an early choice of available units for sale at prices significantly lower than the initial ones. At first, the couple only considered threebedroom condos, thinking they would use theirs as a second home. But, attracted in part by the lower prices, they ended up purchasing a four-bedroom unit, opting to sell their home in Atlanta and make the move to full-time lake living. “We especially love the lake views that we get from every room,” said Kathy. “And … there are different views. From the dining room you see the cove; from the living room and master bedroom you see the long view down the Roanoke; and from one guest bedroom you look upriver toward the bridge.”

LEFT From top, the galley-style kitchen features dark cabinets and upscale appliances; a chair in the living room makes for a cozy spot to read. ABOVE The Sultzes’ spacious master bedroom, decorated in tranquil blues and greens, looks out to the lake.

Larry added, “We’re on the third floor, but the views get even better on the higher floors. Also, there are generally more upgrades up higher: more tile in the baths, Viking refrigerators, wine chillers, upgraded wood flooring, additional fireplaces.” An added bonus to their selection, Kathy said, is “it was already beautifully furnished by Interiors by Kris.” Larry, a Delta Airlines pilot, and Kathy, a former teacher, own and operate Elderberry Smoothie and Wrap Store in Salem. In their free time, they enjoy boating, tennis and working out at the nearby Smith Mountain Lake YMCA. The Sultzes loved the idea of living on Smith Mountain Lake, but didn’t look forward to the upkeep a house would require. At Bridgewater Pointe, they have room for visiting friends and family to stay; they enjoy using the pool; and they have arranged to keep their boat in a covered slip at Bridgewater Marina. Each condo unit also has two covered parking spaces. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

ABOVE The dining room faces out toward the cove where Bridgewater Plaza is located. LEFT From top, a decorative accent in the living room is a nod to Larry Sultze’s occupation as an airline pilot; one of three suites in the condo, which was furnished by Interiors by Kris, offers plenty of room for guests.

Bridgewater Pointe offers three- and fourbedroom units. There are two layouts to the threebedroom condos: one has a dining alcove and the other has an extra long living area to accommodate a dining table. The four-bedroom units, which are all located at the ends of the building, have separate dining alcoves. Kathy was especially impressed with the size of the closets in her condo. “Every bedroom has a good-sized closet with a light that goes on when you open it, and the master has separate his-and-her closets,” she said. The level of security at Bridgewater Pointe is also comforting, Kathy said. The property’s main gate and elevator open only when a resident enters a code. The pool area has a similar code-activated entrance gate, and each unit has its own security system. “People always ask us, ‘Isn’t it noisy living there?,’” said Larry, referring to the activity at adjacent Bridgewater Plaza, which includes restaurants, entertainment spots and retail stores. “You’d be surprised, but when we shut the doors to the balcony, it’s really very quiet. And as far as the music [at Mango’s Bar & Grill], we can only hear outdoor noise a bit in one guest room. The bands have to stop playing by 11 p.m., and they only play on Friday and Saturday. Eleven doesn’t seem late to us. And we really enjoy being able to sit on the deck and watch the boats come and go. All the activity is what makes ‘the bridge’ unique.” 26 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

ven if you’re young(ish) and spry, at Smith Mountain Lake there are many activities to vie for your time, distracting from the garden. Whether it’s volunteering for worthy causes, participating in clubs, hosting guests, raising families or caring for elderly parents, there’s always something to be done. If you feel pulled in multiple directions, and the garden suffers as a result, there’s help. Sydney Eddison is author of the award-winning book, Gardening for a Lifetime: How to Garden Wiser as you Grow Older. (Lakers might be compelled to add to the subtitle “Or if you’re too busy.”) The book offers tips to help prioritize and balance living a full life and having a beautiful garden.

SUB SHRUBS FOR PERENNIALS Clockwise from upper left, Heuchera ‘Peach Melba’ echoes the color of the spiky New Zealand flax, the orange gerbera and the coleus; a row of containers is dramatic planted with reliable, flowering annuals; a monochromatic composition with million bells (Calibrachoa) and Angelonia.

It takes an enormous amount of work to maintain a perennial border – or even a small collection of perennials. In contrast, a flowering shrub, or one with striking foliage, gives much more value with much less work. Look for ones that have been bred for multiple seasons of interest, including flowers, foliage, bark, seed heads and appropriate mature size. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Good shrub possibilities include ninebark (Physocarpus), a native that has been hybridized so gardeners have a wide choice of foliage color ranging from almost black (‘Diablo,’ Summer Wine) to copper (Coppertina) and gold (‘Dart’s Gold’). Spiraea does well at the lake and the deer tend to avoid it. Try ‘Ogon’ for lovely golden foliage. The young foliage of Deutzia gracilis Chardonnay Pearls also is golden, and provides weeks of interest in spring starting with the white, pearl-like buds that cover the compact shrub before opening to pure white bell-shaped flowers. Another compact, deer-resistant shrub I’m hooked on at the lake is the new lilac introduction, Bloomerang. It flowers profusely in April, and then lives up to its name, blooming sporadically throughout the summer. And of course, butterfly bushes put on a show all summer long both with pretty flowers and the flitting butterflies they attract. Check into the new, compact hybrids such as Lo & Behold and the three from the English Series: Purple Emperor, Peacock and Adonis Blue. Mix deciduous bushes with evergreen shrubs and conifers. A combination Eddison found successful in her own garden is a dwarf Alberta spruce planted with a golden false cypress (Chamaeparis pisifera ‘Filifera Aurea Nana’), three blue junipers and a flowering cherry. Clockwise from upper left, Wisteria looks dramatic pruned to size in a container; Bloomerang lilac blooms prolifically in April and, if deadheaded, reblooms sporadically through the rest of the season; a purpleleaved taro (Colocasia esculenta), orange and chartreuse coleus, and the cascading Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’ make a successful container combination. 3 0 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

shorelines | LAKE & GARDEN

For winter interest, consider the various red and yellow twig dogwoods (Cornus alba and C. sericea. C. sericea ‘Silver and Gold’ has lovely variegated foliage in season and bright yellow twigs in winter. For berry color, plant the deciduous sparkleberry hollies (be sure to have a male and female plant for pollination) and beautyberry (Callicarpa) with its vivid purple berries. Excellent reference books for shrubs are Michael Dirr’s Manual of Woody Landscape Plants and Adrian Bloom’s Gardening with Conifers. Also talk to professionals at local nurseries to find out what performs well at SML, and take note of what shrubs your neighbors are growing successfully.

GO NATIVE

Many properties at the lake are covered in trees. Of course you want to open the view, but think about leaving some trees to frame the water. Better yet, leave the trees and limb them up to open the view. Thread a simple path among the tall trunks and, voilà, you have a garden. Here, you can plant natives that enjoy dry shade such as ferns, solomon’s seal and wild ginger. Imports that also do well include epimedium, hellebores and Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’). Imagine strolling through your high-limbed woods, enjoying the cooler air under the canopy and savoring the pretty picture made by the exquisite woodland dwellers and the framed views of the lake.

CONTAIN YOUR GARDEN

Can’t garden but want to? Turn to containers, big containers. Eddison said, “For anyone who can’t do the heavy labor of in-the-ground gardening, gardening in containers can provide much of the same pleasures.” She recommends large containers because you have more scope for planting and they need watering less often. Make a dramatic statement in a large pot with a specimen such as a statuesque canna cultivar with vividly striped leaves or a fragrant angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia) or a compact shrub. Layer the composition with a large item in the center, then fill in the rest of the space with lower growing plants. Add trailing sweet potato vines and ground covers to spill over the edge.

ABOVE With willow-like, golden foliage Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’ lights up a border. LEFT The native, deciduous Red Sprite holly requires a pollinator for a beautiful winter display of berries. OPPOSITE PAGE From left, height adds drama to a container; a mandevilla vine thrives in a pot with a little support; Deutzia gracilis Chardonnay Pearls has golden foliage and white flowers in spring. 3 2 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Go ahead and be greedy: don’t limit containers to just one or two places. Group potted plants on either side of doorways. Create mystery by concealing part of the garden with lattice screens covered in vines growing in pots. Make portable “walls” to divide spaces with rows of potted plants, and break up paved areas with pots overflowing with flowers and foliage. You might even consider painting the furniture to match the flowers.

Eddison’s book is rich with common sense advice on how to indulge your gardening urges without overtaxing your time or energy. It’s available in paperback on amazon.com for $14.95. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. The author of nine gardening books, Erler also blogs at joyofgardens.com.

he Little Gallery at Bridgewater Plaza is full of fire and light - in several senses. The gallery, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary at Smith Mountain Lake, offers a wealth of visual artwork, jewelry and distinctive handmade crafts to stoke your spirit’s fire. One of the hottest is a line of recycled glass tableware called Fire & Light, jewel-colored dishes, bowls, goblets and table accessories. “We first found the Fire & Light at a trade show in Philadelphia that featured only American artists,” said Carol Swain, co-owner of The Little Gallery. “We fell in love with the yummy colors and the way the pieces glow and shine in the light. They’re not like anything else. We’ve been carrying it ever since.” The pieces range in price from $16 for a cereal or salad bowl, $35 for a dinner plate, and $66 for a large charger that also is beautiful as a serving platter. Collectors often start with one or two pieces and then come back for more, said Swain, recalling one couple who bought a set of plates for their home in Florida. They loved them so much, they came back and bought a second set for their home on Smith Mountain Lake. The story of how Fire & Light came to be begins more than 30 years ago when the small, eco-conscious town of Arcata, Calif., decided to become one of the first communities in the nation to recycle glass. Arcata’s citizens were strongly behind the effort, and soon mountains of empty glass bottles and jars were collected and shipped by the truckload 300 miles south to San Francisco for processing. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

37

shorelines | ART AND CULTURE

Clearly, shipping the glass that distance didn’t make ecological sense. In 1995, a group of Arcata investors gathered to discuss ways to reuse the crushed glass locally while, at the same time, creating jobs for the community. The brainstorming sessions led to an innovative idea: they would develop a line of colored dinnerware using the recycled glass. The investors formed a partnership with the Arcata Community Recycling Center, and Fire & Light was born. The first products were fired, poured and pressed in December 1995. Unfortunately, the course of this worthy endeavor did not run smoothly. The company was underfinanced and owners found themselves short of cash just a few months after beginning operations. They turned to John McClurg, a certified public accountant, for help. McClurg admired the beautiful product and the worthy cause and agreed to provide free business consulting services to Fire & Light. McClurg’s advice made a difference, and Fire & Light thrived - for a time. When the partners hit another bump in the road in 1999, they came to McClurg again. This time, they asked him to take over the business and run it.

"We fell in love with the yummy colors and the way the pieces glow and shine in the light.” Carol Swain, The Little Gallery

38 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

“I loved the product and the business concept,” said McClurg. “My wife, Natali, and I talked it over, and decided I would quit my job, we would buy the business and run it full time.” The McClurgs brought business expertise to the enterprise, but John admits he knew nothing about glass manufacturing or the needs of the vendors. He learned quickly, and the couple expanded the Fire & Light product line to include about 45 different items, each hand made and unique. Almost every aspect of the business involves recycling. Of course, there’s the primary product made from crushed, recycled bottles. Then, there’s the metal floor in the factory recycled from an old saw mill, kegs from local microbreweries used as water tubs to cool the pouring ladles, and the 1,000 pounds of cardboard that neighboring businesses would normally throw away that Fire & Light shreds to use as packing material for shipping. In addition to running the business, McClurg’s creative juices are constantly flowing as he experiments with new shapes and colors. One of his new introductions is the “splash bowl,” a whimisical piece that makes a stunning presentation for a dinner party first course, as a nut dish or as display of art. He got the idea when he was experimenting with capturing the texture of stone on glass by pouring the molten material over a rock. He liked the random splash effect, and a new product line was born, including splash bowls, votive candleholders and vases.

The Fire & Light business embodies three of McClurg’s passions: recycling; designing beautiful, useful objects; and perhaps most important, providing local employment opportunities. McClurg tells the story of the time he thanked an employee for working nights and extra hours during a crunch time. “The man looked me in the eye and thanked me for the job,” said McClurg, adding with emotion, “It gives me chills just to tell you that.”

LEFT Glass is sorted into bins before being crushed into pieces. ABOVE After chemicals are applied, this batch of glass turns an amber color. HOW IT’S MADE 1. Bins of clear glass are crushed into pieces, then coated with chemicals to color the glass. 2. In the late afternoon, furnaces are heated to 2,400° F. Once the correct temperature is reached, hundreds of pounds of glass are shoveled into the ovens and left overnight to melt. 3. The next morning, the molten glass is poured into molds. The key is knowing the correct amount of glass to pour to fill the mold without overflowing. When making a drinking tumbler (photo at left), a form is immediately inserted to hollow and shape the inside. 4. The glass quickly cools to 1,000° F, becoming firm and ready to be smoothed with a blowtorch. 5. Finally, the item is placed in an annealing oven. In the next 24 hours, the oven will gradually cool the glass from 900° F to room temperature. From start to finish, the process of making one piece to sell takes three days.

TAX SMARTS Tired Of The STOck MarkeT rOller cOaSTer:

Invest In Real Estate With A Self-Directed IRA

A client of mine recently told me that with all the constant ups and downs of the stock market, his portfolio is currently valued at the same figure that it was ten years ago. Can the same be said of your retirement funds? Given the recent developments in the equity markets and the bargains available in the real estate market, now could be an opportune moment to diversify a portion your of retirement funds out of equities and into tangible real estate assets. Consider this, suppose you decide to purchase a real estate property, using your retirement funds, for $325,000 cash. And further suppose that this property will rent for $1,450 per month and the property will have following annual expenses: rental management commissions of $1,680, property insurance of $350, real estate taxes of $1,723 and POA assessments of $1,560; the resulting annual cash flow is $12,087 or a 3.72% annual return on investment. More importantly, this cash flow is reflected as deposits in your account and cannot be reversed by market declines. This ROI does not consider any capital appreciation of the property which, given the current state of the real estate market, will occur as our economy recovers. Is this IRA investment option legal and why haven’t you heard about this before? The fact is that you have been able to buy real estate with an IRA since the first day IRAs were created 35 years ago. The IRS regulations only define what you cannot invest in with an IRA (life insurance contracts, collectibles and capital stock of “S” corporations) not what you can. You have not heard of this investment option from the traditional IRA custodians because it is not in their economic interest. Most traditional IRA custodians and their agents earn their commissions and/or fees when you buy their investment products: mutual funds, annuities, or individual stocks and/ or bonds and therefore do not publicize the self-directed investment in real estate. So what type of real estate property can you purchase with your IRA? The choices are many: raw land, residential rental properties, commercial properties and my personal choice real estate–related private entities (such as limited liability companies {LLCs}) that invest in real estate. So how do you purchase real estate property with your IRA? This is where I can help. My IRA consulting service will open your account with a self-direct IRA custodian; supervise the tax-free rollover of your retirement funds from your existing custodian to your new self-directed IRA custodian; supervise the asset purchase to see that all IRS and Department of Labor requirements are met and insure that no prohibited transactions occur. I have been providing this service for over 7 years and would welcome an opportunity to discuss this IRA investment option with you. Please give me a call if

ike so many Lakers, Jack and JoAnn Kirsch generally have to wait for weekends to enjoy the delights of lake life. With their home seriously off-water near Martinsville, their chances to savor Smith Mountain Lake’s magnificent sunrises and sunsets are somewhat limited. But in their relatively short married life — they wed just more than two years ago — they’ve discovered the wonderful dimensions of family life that SML can provide. With boating in her Rahway, N.J., background and SML now a short drive away, JoAnn quickly concluded that on-the-water weekends would be a great way to enjoy time with her new family — Jack and his daughters, Avarie (11), Katie (18) and Meghan (19). Both JoAnn and Jack, who was born in Chicago but settled in Roanoke, had come from fishing families. The lake’s reputation as a varied and prolific fishery was an irresistible draw. The couple soon purchased a 1994 Sea Ray 240 cuddy cabin cruiser from Webster Marine, which they keep in a slip at Crystal Shores Marina. It’s become their weekend “floating island,” with plenty of cockpit space for fishing or hanging out in quiet coves, plus the performance to give the kids awesome tube rides. The boat’s name, “Dawg Daze,” refers to the family’s passion for raising and showing Dobermans. “We always have at least three,” JoAnn said. “Right now, they range from ages 8 months to 5 years.” The couple also trains and qualifies their dogs to visit hospitals and nursing homes as therapy companions. “Back in Jersey, I took dogs to visit families that had lost loved ones [in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001]. It was moving to see how the dogs could lift the spirits of people in mourning.” So it’s not surprising to find a canine reference in their boat name. The spelling of “Dawg Daze,” however, is a reference to the teasing JoAnn takes from Jack and the girls about her lingering Jersey expressions and accent. “I work from home, making appointments for a portrait studio in Mountainside, and I’m constantly talking with people from New Jersey,” she explained. “So I don’t expect to lose the accent any time soon.” Jack, on the other hand, spends his workdays interacting with locals as a Yellow Book advertising representative for Roanoke, Salem and the New River Valley. “We try to get to the boat at least every other weekend during the season,” he said. “I guess it is sort of our therapy from the work-a-day world we face during the week.”

Newcomers to sailing can watch one of the club regattas and/or schedule a lesson to get a taste of the sport at Smith Mountain Lake. Phillip said only licensed captains are qualified to take students out on the water. “In sailing lessons, we focus on safe boating, right of way, how to adapt to wind conditions and traffic out there on the lake. It’s important to learn to sail within the ability of your crew. You want the experience to be fun and something you’ll want to come back and do again,” he said. Wirtz resident Jim Schaible recently purchased a sailboat and signed himself and 10-year-old son Christopher up for sailing lessons with Phillip. “I wanted to learn the finer points of sailing and get to where I could race with the BYRA group,” said Schaible. “I also wanted to get my son involved and thought it would be good to have 48 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

You’re not going anywhere fast but you have something to do while you’re out on the boat. One thing about our lake here is the winds can be unpredictable, they can change rapidly. You have to be attentive. I think Christopher will find the competition of racing to be very exciting,” he said. Phillip said people get hooked on sailboat racing because it is an experience that can’t be beat. “It’s electrifying. The gun goes off, the crew is bustling. Those first five minutes are arguably the most exciting moments,” he said. “Our racing community has some of the best competition you’ll find anywhere here at SML.”

Whether the view is of an exhilarating sailboat race or a single vessel leisurely gliding through the water, the picturesque sight of a sailboat is sometimes all it takes to draw in a new hobbyist. Pennsylvania residents Bud and Andrea Lauer said they always admired the sailboats going by their Bernard’s Landing townhouse and recently took the plunge as owners.

"Owning a sailboat increases the length of seasons we can go out on the lake. It's something to enjoy all year." Andrea Lauer, sailing enthusiast

“The sailboats always look so beautiful gliding across the lake,” said Andrea Lauer. “We decided to buy one before we knew what we were doing. It was going to be a new adventure for us.” The Lauers quickly signed up for lessons at the SML Sailing School where they began learning the terms and technicalities of sailing. It didn’t take long before the couple could sail on their own and even take their children and grandchildren out with them. “It is fun to make sailing a family event. We’ll keep doing more lessons because we want to be able to race,” Lauer said. “We’re learning to read the water and the wind. Practice makes perfect, just as with anything else.” Lauer also said while many motorboats have to be winterized in late fall and stored until spring, a sailboat is available year-round. "Owning a sailboat increases the length of seasons we can go out on the lake," she said. "It's something to enjoy all year."

Tips for enjoying the lake without breaking the bank

Story

With

prices at the gas pump hovering

around the

$4-per-gallon

mark, fuel

efficiency is a hot topic among drivers

of both autos and watercraft.

But

you don’t have to burn huge quantities of pricey fuel to enjoy your summer at

Smith Mountain Lake.

S

ure, there will be times when you can justify guzzling gallons – pulling the kids on towables, water-skiing or wakeboarding on a picture-perfect day, heading out to meet friends at a waterfront restaurant (see pages 82-83 for our Dock & Dine Guide). Those are all instances when you might say, “There is boating fun to be had, memories to be made, and we’re all over it!” But Lakers – residents and visitors alike – can maximize their summer fun while minimizing impact on their wallets by adopting a new gas usage index we call “fpg” – fun per gallon. The goal is to get your fpg average as high as possible by adopting some tried-and-true strategies for enjoying the lake on fewer gallons of gas.

ABOVE From left, Haley Holbrow enjoys a PWC ride with family friend Andy Pratt; a boater fills up prior to heading out for a day on the lake. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

SML Summer Fun Guide

GET LIGHT

Every pound of unnecessary weight carried on your boat sucks up unnecessary gas while underway. Go through your boat and remove “excess baggage” that has accumulated in storage compartments. Other than safety equipment, if you don’t plan to use gear on a particular outing, it should stay on the dock. Most boaters will admit they’ve allowed rarely-used items to collect in outof-sight places. But with gas prices up, it’s time to offload that unnecessary weight. And don’t push around a full tank of water (or gas) unless you plan an outing that will use most of it.

AVOID JACKRABBIT STARTS AND FULL-THROTTLE RUNS

Most boats will easily pull up a skier, especially a child, with three-quarter or less throttle. Taking care not to “overspeed” on the start will save gas and make it more comfortable for your rider. Remember, once you pass your boat’s sweet-spot cruising range (usually around 4,000 rpm for outboards and 3,500 for inboards and stern drives), fuel efficiency plummets. Slowing down and taking a few extra minutes to get to each new fishing spot can slash the fuel consumption for an outing by several gallons.

54 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

GET ON AND OFF PLANE QUICKLY

“Plowing through the water is the least efficient use of gas and also causes the greatest damage to nearby docks and shoreline,” said Tom Buck, owner of Halesford Harbour Marina. “You’ll use less gas if you get the boat on plane quickly and then reduce throttle to hold an efficient cruising speed, usually about 25 mph. When slowing down, quickly cut the throttle so you avoid a long period of plowing water as you transition to idle speed.”

SPEND SOME “IDLE HOURS” AFLOAT

You don’t have to be going far or fast to relish a boat ride. You’ll be amazed at how pleasant it can be to idle through coves close to your lake place – admiring the scenery, observing wildlife and greeting other Lakers on their docks. Two hours on the water poking about in a typical SML runabout costs less than $15 — a reasonably inexpensive evening’s entertainment, even for just a couple.

ABOVE Avoiding jackrabbit starts and full-throttle runs while towing riders like these three youngsters can help reduce fuel consumption.

SML Summer Fun Guide

Friends Karen Loftus (front) and Kelly Frantz burn calories instead of fuel while out for a kayak ride on Smith Mountain Lake.

BY THE NUMBERS Most recognize the abbreviation mpg — miles per gallon, the standard used for measuring automobile fuel efficiency. For watercraft, the common fuel-usage measurement is gallons per hour (gph). How does that equate for your favorite on-board activities? A few consumption examples provide a clue.

FRANCES PRATT

1.0 gph – Idling through a quiet cove (.5-1.5 or more depending on boat/ engine)

ENLIST FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS IN A SHARED GAS-SAVING STRATEGY

Pal up and drive your boat to dinner this weekend, theirs the next. Make a few calls to neighbors and arrange a raft-up in a cove just a short run from home, where lots of socializing can take place with consumption at 0 gph. When you bring hors d’oeuvres or snacks to share boat-to-boat, the fpg quotient can go off the chart. Swimming from an anchored boat on a hot summer day is also a delight. Float on noodles, life jackets or rafts with snacks and beverages arrayed on a swim platform or tethered float.

SAY YES TO GUESTS WHO OFFER TO HELP WITH THE GAS

It’s OK to put a cap on how much fuel those teens run through the PWCs before they start spending some of their own allowance money to fuel up. A limit on “free” fuel will encourage them to make full-throttle sprints shorter and less frequent (and provide an added safety bonus). Having kids help with fueling and maintaining the PWCs also teaches boating responsibility.

56 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

3.5 gph – Slow cruise aboard a typical pontoon (150-hp outboard) 5.0 gph – Running a personal watercraft (PWC) at 40-45 mph 6.5 gph – Optimum cruise speed in a 19-foot family runabout (200-hp inboard/outboard) 8.0 gph – Towing boarders in a 23-foot wake sports inboard 12.8 gph – 45 mph run to a fishing spot in a 19-foot bass boat 60+ gph – Wide-open dashes in a 35foot twin-engine cruiser or performance powerboat Of course, there’s also 0 gph, which applies to sailboats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, boats anchored in quiet coves or pulled up at beaches, as well as Lakers content to simply “veg out” on the dock. Estimates based on tests published in Boating Magazine’s 2012 Boat Buyer’s Guide.

DOCK DINE With the sun shining and warmer weather upon us, most Lakers are eager to be on the water as much as possible. Fortunately, the Smith Mountain Lake community offers one of the best ways to extend an on-the-water experience with a variety of boaterfriendly waterfront dining locations.

B

ayRoc Marina owner Kristina Mize said customers who visit the marina’s café enjoy the convenience of a dock-and-dine eatery and indulging in food favorites. “People let loose in the summertime when it’s warm and sunny,” said Mize. “They enjoy docking to have food that’s a treat and that they might deprive themselves of the rest of the year – barbecue, burgers, cheese steaks. Summer is certainly our busy season.” Bridgewater Plaza, one of the most popular destinations for boaters at SML, offers six eateries in addition to entertainment spots and retail stores. Candice Padgett, general manager of Mango’s Bar and Grill, which hosts crowds for live music all season long, said the most common comment she hears from customers is that boating

to waterfront restaurants is a tradition. “When the good weather hits, families get on a boat and go for a ride,” said Padgett. “Since they’re already on the water, it’s convenient for them [to come to Bridgewater Plaza]. Being out on the boat and being able to stop somewhere when they get hungry, then get right back out and spend the [rest of the] day boating is what most families enjoy doing.” As waterfront dining at Smith Mountain Lake grows in popularity, so do the number of restaurants. We’ve captured highlights of four new on-thewater eateries you’ll want to add to your list of stops this summer. For a complete list of places where you can dock and dine, including contact information, in-season hours and a map to help you navigate your way, turn to pages 82-83.

JAKE’S PLACE AT THE HARBOUR Featuring a Caribbean-themed atmosphere and menu, Jake’s is a spacious restaurant offering indoor seating as well as an overthe-water deck for outdoor dining under colorful umbrellas. General Manager Michael Gordon said Jake’s Place, which opened in January, has a little something for everyone. “We offer Caribbean-style menu items such as the Mango Mahi-Mahi, Coconut Shrimp and the Cuban sandwich. Our Jake’s burger is great, and the steak lover will want our 10-ounce ribeye or 8-ounce sirloin. Both are meltin-your-mouth,” said Gordon, whose family also operates The Blackwater Café, an upscale, offwater restaurant on Scruggs Road. At Jake’s, patrons can take in lake views from several vantage points, including the covered porch, deck and main dining room. The extensive bar features four big screen TVs, and Gordon said events and live music are scheduled throughout the summer. Docking is available for boats and personal watercraft. Jake’s opens at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

76 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Indian Pointe Marina kicked off the season with the opening of Los Machados Mexican Grill & Cantina in March. Owned and managed by three brothers – Walter Machados, Carlos Machados and chef Arturo Machados – the enterprise is modeled after Walter’s first restaurant establishment, El Tapatio, in Delaware. “I opened up my own place about 15 years ago. The recipes I use are passed down through generations of family members,” said Walter Machados. “The menu at Los Machados will be very similar [with] more original Mexican food than what most Mexican restaurants are serving.” The remodeled facility, which formerly housed Vieira’s Restaurant, will offer menu specials throughout the summer. Los Machados also has a full bar and outdoor waterfront seating. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

78 May • June 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

WALLER’S Taking its cue from the kick-yourheels-up feel of summertime at Smith Mountain Lake, Waller’s has strived to offer a carefree vibe to diners since its opening on Memorial Day weekend 2011. Owner Waller Perrow said good food, low prices and a consistent entertainment schedule is the recipe that has worked successfully for the establishment, located at Crystal Shores Marina. “I think everybody has had a blast here. It’s been a lot of fun,” said Perrow. “We have a pretty vast menu that features seafood, Boars Head meats and the one-pound Monster Burger. We do live music five nights a week in season and feature big-band music on Friday and Saturday nights.” New for this year, Perrow said, are “Walleritaville” open-mic nights and live acoustic music during the day. Wallers is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and 11 a.m. to midnight Wednesday through Sunday.

MITCHELL’S RESTAURANT Located on Craddock Creek, Mitchell’s Restaurant at Mitchell’s Point Marina opened in April in the spot that was formerly Marina Cafe. The eatery features a large outdoor patio, a tiki bar for serving beer and wine and a stage ready for live music. Owner Scott Heath said he and wife Hannah have experience in restaurant management and thought the timing was right to establish their own place at Mitchell’s Point. Heath said one of the great things about the restaurant’s location – away from heavy boat traffic – is that regular customers tend to form their own community. He also noted the quick service is a bonus for boaters. “Our menu offers pizza, wings, chicken and steak dinners, subs, hamburgers, hot dogs and other types of American grill meals.

It’s not as hectic as other marina places so it provides more of a peaceful place to go,” said Heath.
