Connie and Bob LeMasters of Huddleston spent the month of May traveling around South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Botswana to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. During their stay in Zimbabwe, the couple took this photo with the Laker at Victoria Falls, the largest sheet of falling water in the world. Victoria Falls is 354 feet tall, roughly twice the height of Niagara Falls.

In April, Jim Cain of Moneta took the January/February issue (which featured daughter MacKenzie on the cover) to Lapland for an international sales meeting. “Yes, we worked,” he said, “but also went snowmobiling through the woods, snowshoed through a small forest to a reindeer farm, drove ice carts, mushed dog sleds and went into the icy waters at a Finnish spa. ... This picture is in front of the famous Ice Hotel, where we had dinner at a very comfortable -4 Fahrenheit.”

Rich Hart and daughter Destiny of Hardy took the Laker on a mission trip in February to Jinja, Uganda. The pair spent time working at a nutrition and rehabilitation center run by Serving His Children, a nonprofit organization with a mission to “break the cycle of malnutrition one life at a time” through inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient early intervention and community health and nutrition classes.

In May, Jim Smith, Vicki Rosenthal, Chris Steinmiller and Jim Steinmiller of Union Hall took a seven-day cruise that included stops in Key West, Florida, the Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico. The friends took time out from the fun to share this photo, taken at an open-air market in Cozumel.

Huddleston residents Tom and Ila Bayrer cruised to Europe and through the Mediterranean in May. They posed for this photo in Athens, Greece, at the famed Acropolis. The ancient citadel, located high on a rocky outcrop above the city, is home to the remains of several ancient buildings, including the Parthenon.

In June, Judith Clark of Moneta and her daughter, Judi Robertson of Wirtz, took the Laker on a two-week Russian river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow. The trip included a stop in Pushkin, where they took this photo in the ballroom of the Catherine Palace, which dates back to 1717.

Tom and Suzanne Monaghan of Huddleston and Sue and Dick Robertson of Moneta took a soggy Laker Magazine along on a boat tour cruise of Niagara Falls. While visiting Canada and New York in June, the couples spent time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, a quaint village in southern Ontario’s wine country known for its beautifully landscaped shopping district; took a boat ride on the Erie Canal at Lockport, New York; and enjoyed wings in Buffalo at the Anchor Bar, where the delicacy originated.

In May, James Doris of Rocky Mount took the Laker to Saranac Lake, New York, to share with family and friends. Doris’ daughter, Maureen Leitenberger of Glade Hill, was featured in the issue as owner of All Fired Up, winner of the silver award for Best New Business in the Laker’s 2014 Best of SML Awards.

Alison Huber of Union Hall took this shot of her kids, Megan and Max, in front of the Palacio Real de Madrid while on a weeklong trip to Spain. The nearly 1.5-million-square-foot palace is the official residence of the Spanish royal family but only is used for state ceremonies.

Kathi and Ken Britske of Wirtz spent the first day of summer visiting their niece, Caity, in Philadelphia. They took this shot with the Laker on Caity’s rooftop terrace with the city skyline in the background. The couple also enjoyed a double-decker bus sightseeing tour and dinner at the Kite & Key Gastro Pub, named for Benjamin Franklin’s famous lightning experiment.

hen George and Michele Moonan’s Smith Mountain Lake home was under construction, each wrote a favorite scripture passage on a wall stud before the drywall was installed. “My passage is to the right of this entry doorway, and George’s is to the left,” said Michele, pointing to the entryway and noting that other family members, friends, the builder and his workers all were encouraged to add favorite verses, too. Added George, “We believe this house is a gift from God.” Both George and Michele each lost a spouse to cancer, and because they attended the same church in Raleigh, North Carolina, one might assume they met one another there. “Oh, no!” said George. “It was a huge church with 5,000 families; we attended different services

and never met. As it happened, we both went on a church-sponsored trip to Italy. When we got on the bus at the Rome airport, we were strangers, and two weeks later, we got off holding hands.” The Moonans have been married eight years and have four adult children between them. There are eight grandchildren, all on George’s side of the family. A love affair with Smith Mountain Lake began in 1986 when, after dropping off a daughter at Lynchburg College, George and his first wife, Susie, spotted signs for SML. They took a detour, rented a boat for a by-water look, contacted a real estate agent and purchased a lot in Winding Waters. As for the impulsiveness of the purchase, George said, “It was love at first sight. … I loved the fresh water and the in-between [moderate] climate. My three prerequisites were: deep water, a protected cove and a lot that faced east to avoid the hot afternoon sun.”

The lot sat vacant for years until George and Michele attended a neighborhood picnic while vacationing here in 2009 and were wowed by the friendliness of the Winding Waters residents. “Why don’t we live here?” they asked one another. After three years of architectural planning and construction, the Moonans moved into their Cape Cod cottage-style home in 2012. Michele said she especially wanted cozy, homey spaces that created a feeling of comfort. The main level is dominated by the living room with a stacked-stone fireplace and oversized beams installed with pegs, no nails. George designed the wall unit that houses bookshelves and a TV. Close by is the master suite with tray ceiling, a European-style porch, and a bathroom with heated floor, stacked stone near the tub and a shade controlled by remote for privacy. George insisted on having a separate formal dining room to house his Directoire period china cabinet, acquired when he worked for IBM in France, and a 1760 Hepplewhite sideboard made in Williamsburg. In the informal breakfast area is a 1900s country French sideboard that contains a collection of teapots that belonged to George’s first wife. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The kitchen has an alder island and cabinets of maple with fruitwood stain and a glaze. The counters are made of white springs granite. Nearby is the all-season room, a favorite of Michele’s, with white wicker furniture, two French birdcages and a gas fireplace. The room opens to the screened porch with a vented grill and river rock back splash. En route to the lower level is a portemanteau, a French coat rack, with hats on the hooks. This level’s guest accommodations include one bedroom with Michele’s doll collection, a pink guest room and a kids’ room with two sets of brightly colored bunk beds. The home includes photos of their blended family with former spouses, sketches of their previous homes and former spouses’ collections, but it all works together to create a beautiful picture of love lost, new love found and happiness at a new stage of life.

An elegant pond home to colorful and beloved koi makes the garden of Charlie and Theresa Converse a winning lakefront landscape.

his landscaping story begins in the early 1980s when Charlie and Theresa Converse lived in Rochester, New York. A friend had a koi pond that intrigued and inspired them. “We were drawn to the koi,” said Theresa, “and we both liked the concept of having a pond and the sound of running water.” The couple started with a store-bought pond and one fish, but the koi collection quickly grew to 38 after they purchased additional fish and those had babies. They also rescued damaged koi and nursed them back to health. They decided to add another pond. “Everything my husband does is larger than life,” Theresa said. “Pretty soon, he had a backhoe and was building a larger pond from scratch.” When Charlie retired from his job as line forman for the Rochester Gas and Electric Company in late 2001, the couple decided to move south, in part because koi prefer long, warm summers. “In New York we only had about three months of weather that was warm enough for them,” said Theresa. “The water has to be 55 degrees [Fahrenheit] for the fish to awaken from dormancy. In Rochester, sometimes it was May before they became active.”

KOI FACTS • Koi can live 80-100 years; owners often write them in their wills as property to pass on to loved ones. • A valuable koi can sell for up to $20,000; they are shipped from Japan on ice to keep them dormant during the journey.

Theresa discovered Smith Mountain Lake while traveling for her job as a healthcare consultant. She visited Roanoke and and fell in love with the area. In March 2002, they came to look at property. Charlie didn’t plan to be on the water, but Theresa really wanted a lakefront home. “Charlie grew up on a lake in New York, so I hired a fishing guide to take him out. I told him, ‘If you come back with a big fish, we’ll buy a lakefront home.’ He joked that it would have to be a big fish. Six hours later, he came back with a string of three huge fish. When he held them at chest level, the tails touched the ground. So we bought a lakefront lot and built an Arts and Crafts-style house.” 36 September • October 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

After purchasing a lot in The Water’s Edge, challenges started to arise. The couple’s Rochester house sold before their lake house was finished. They had to move the koi from the sold property, but the proposed ponds at the lake had not yet been built. After some brainstorming, they hit on the idea of temporarily housing the fish in a 4-foot-deep above-ground swimming pool. Once the lake house was ready, they bought large plastic bins to transport the fish. They put enough water into large plastic bags to cover the fishes’ backs, put one to three fish (depending on their size) into each bag, filled the bags with pure oxygen that would disseminate into the water slowly, and knotted them closed. Each bag of fish went into separate plastic bins, which were stacked in layers and filled the bed of the couple’s pickup truck.

“We had no idea what would happen to them,” Theresa recalled. “We drove nonstop for 10 hours to get them to Virginia. It was midnight when we arrived at the house.” Immediately, the Converses released the koi into another above-ground swimming pool they had prepped in their garage. There, the fish awaited their new outdoor home. The Converses built a series of naturalistic ponds and streams that wandered through the back woods on their gently sloping lot. After a few years, they decided a more formal design would better suit the style of their house. They drew up rough plans for the design they envisioned, and then brought in Lynchburg-based landscape architect Norman Tharpe to finalize and implement the design with assistance from nearby Lakescapes Nursery. FOILING THE DEER Charlie and Theresa Converse brought 500 hostas from New York and lost them all to hungry deer. Determined not to let that happen again, they have developed a successful, three-pronged system to stop the pests in their tracks: 1. Throughout the year, they keep bars of soap (Dial brand) hanging in the trees around the perimeter of the property, replacing them 3-4 times per year. 2. As soon as the hosta first appear in spring, before the deer have a chance to get a whiff of them, Theresa sprinkles the granular Deer Scram Deer Repellent around the property boundary. She respreads it after every rain. 3. Beginning in early spring, Theresa sprays Bobbex Deer Repellent, a topical foliar spray, on the leaves of her plants. She reapplies every 10 days. “I’ve seen a doe and two fawns stand on the edge of the garden, sniff the air and leave,” said Theresa.

“We looked into several people, but chose Norman because he has the most experience at the lake with koi,” said Theresa, noting Tharpe’s 30 years of expertise in design, installation and maintenance of water gardens and koi ponds around the region. Unfortunately, the home’s septic lines ran right through where they wanted the upper pond. They solved the problem by building a shallow, aboveground “settling” pond five feet lower than the deck off the back of the house. Well above ground and over the septic lines, the upper pond is too shallow for fish. Instead, the Converses planted water hyacinths, an ideal plant for biofiltration to purify the water that cascades to the fish pond below. The lower pond’s depth (6-8 feet) and steep sides provide no access for wading, foiling local herons that would relish a feast of koi. A stone wall hides the mechanics of the raised pond, and blends with the stone fireplace on the deck. To this hardscape, the Converses have planted a garden that focuses on foliage with various textures and myriad shades of green, blue, yellow and red. “There’s not a lot of color,” said Theresa, “and no annuals.” Instead, the couple has planted hostas, euonymous, nandina, spirea, lorapetalum, rhododendrons and azaleas. Charlie and Theresa Converse are passionate about koi and about landscaping. These two loves are a winning combination for this year’s Lovely Laker Landscape Contest. or a long time, George Curnow thought his dream of owning an antique ChrisCraft boat was out of reach. And the prospect of a vessel he owns being featured at an event like Smith Mountain Lake’s Antique and Classic Boat Show? Even less likely. But wife Marlyn, and others who know him best, would likely agree it’s about time both dreams come true. “I had put the notion of owning a wooden boat out of my head because other things such as career, family and building a house were always more important. It felt like a frivolous thing to have,” George Curnow said. Still, it was the luxuriousness of a gleaming postWorld War II utility vessel that first caught his eye. “I remember going on vacation with a friend to his family’s cottage on Devil’s Lake in Michigan when I was a kid. No sooner did we get there than I could see his grandfather’s Chris-Craft in the water, and it struck me as being a really beautiful boat. Frankly, it reminded me of our mahogany dining room furniture. I stared at that boat all week long,” he said. “It’s one of those childhood memories that stuck with me my whole life.”

For years, Curnow appeased his love for old wooden boats by seizing every opportunity to catch a glimpse of them at boat shows. If there was a lake nearby with wooden boats on display, he would drop everything to go check them out. When his financial services career moved him from Chicago to Long Island, New York, he and Marlyn began vacationing on Lake George, in part because it is a hot spot for old wooden boats. After several more moves, the couple retired to SML in 2010. “We were drawn to Smith Mountain Lake because it reminds us of Lake George,” said Marlyn.

“And it’s convenient to where our daughter lives in northern Virginia, and our son in Raleigh, North Carolina.” Shortly after their arrival at SML, the couple attended a boat show sponsored by the local chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. “Of course we went over to see the boats, and we ended up meeting a bunch of really neat people from the club,” said George. “We were invited to a meeting, and that’s when we realized we didn’t have to own an antique or classic boat to belong to the club.”

For the next two years the couple focused on building their lake home and other hobbies. Marlyn, who used to own a graphic design business, is an expert quilter and works part time at The General Store at Westlake Corner. She lends her skills to many of the SML Antique and Classic Boat Society’s design needs. George enjoys financial consulting for some of the companies he used to work for and serves as vice president for the club. With encouragement from his club friends, George finally fulfilled his dream by buying a 1948 ChrisCraft U-22 Utility Sportsman in 2012. “I was a little intimidated because I’m not the craftsman that some of the other boat owners are. But I learned so much from them and realized there wasn’t anything I would run into in searching for my own boat that one of them hadn’t already experienced,” he said. The Curnows say they enjoy keeping the boat operational. “One of my favorite aspects of the classic boat is the deep, throaty sound the engine makes. And it’s such a smooth ride, which provides an experience you can’t get from modern boats,” said Marlyn. “We often take her out early in the evening and cruise along slowly. ... Or if our children and grandchildren are visiting, we’ll take them out. Our grandsons love the boat.” Though maritime lore holds that changing a boat’s name is a bad omen, the Curnows said they believed their vessel deserved a moniker that told their story. “The previous caretakers had named her Waves Gone By,” said George. “But when we thought of coming up with a new name, Marlyn and I just looked at each other and I said, ‘Well, it’s about time.’” So her new name became It’s About Time, and it certainly is.”

ony Giesen’s official title is professor of mathematics. He is the longest-serving faculty member at Ferrum College, and students from four different decades will tell you numbers are definitely his passion. But perhaps the numbers that excite Giesen the most are ones that represent his other love — collecting and preserving cut glass from the American Brilliant Period. “It is the only major collection in the state of Virginia, one of only a few across the nation, and I’ve been putting it together since I was 15. I’ll be 75 in February,” said Giesen. In 2007, Giesen permanently lent the more than 250-piece collection to Ferrum College to create the Anthony Giesen Gallery of American Brilliant Cut Glass. A pitcher cut in the herringbone pattern is one of its signature pieces. “After being named winner of the best design for American Brilliant Cut Glass at the 1904 World’s Fair, it was purchased by relatives of the Bunn family, of Bunn coffee makers,” he explained. “It was part of this lineage for 90 years until I bought it. It is the rarest of the rare.” It is the history of the artwork that fascinates Giesen as much as its rarity and beauty. Glass cutting dates back to around 1,500 B.C., when ancient Egyptians

began cutting shapes into glass for decoration, he said. Centuries later, the American cut-glass industry began producing its own style, which reached its peak between 1876 and 1917. Giesen said the period, known to cut glass aficionados as the Brilliant Period, produced works that rivaled those produced in other, more established countries such as England and Ireland. Such frivolities became less important in the wake of World War I, leaving only 40 years’ worth of the luxury items to memorialize the era. What each sparkling item represents is priceless to a collector such as Giesen. “My mother had a couple cut glass pieces, and one day I was looking at them, thinking they were SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

so different, and asked her to tell me about them. She relayed some of their history to me, and I was fascinated. That’s when I began searching for and collecting them,” he said. A young Giesen “mowed a lot of grass and bought a lot of glass” to build his fledgling collection. “It’s ironic, really, because there was a time when no one wanted the stuff. It was considered junk, put out in boxes on the street for free,” he said. “Now it’s worth a lot.” His collection is insured for more than $400,000, but Giesen said it’s not the monetary value that’s important. “These pieces are irreplaceable. If I lost one, it’s not as though I could go find another. They’re one-of-akind,” he said. Like any genuine piece of art, creating a brilliant cutglass item requires an artistic mind, intuitive touch and vision of the final product. The American glasscutting industry demanded a particular combination of skills in its craftsmen, Giesen said. “It is a lost art. Cutters today have to complete a seven-year apprenticeship to become a professional cutter,” he said. “It’s more of a time commitment than most career degrees.” Giesen said he thinks it’s a shame that some collectors keep their collections private, never allowing their art to be seen by others. He is proud to share his at Ferrum College. “I wanted it to stay together. I wanted it all to be

The only other higher education institution in the nation to have a similar gallery is Texas A&M, Giesen said. The quality of the craftsmanship seen in each of the cut-glass items reflects a work ethic Giesen said he also likes to see in his students. Nashville singer/songwriter Buddy Mondlock to perform at SML

uddy Mondlock is the creative mind behind songs made famous by the likes of Garth Brooks, Joan Baez, Nanci Griffith and Art Garfunkel. On Oct. 24, Mondlock will bring his talent to Smith Mountain Lake for a performance of original songs. Sponsored by the Smith Mountain Arts Council, the event will take place at 8 p.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. SMAC events coordinator Mike DeGiorgi said a friend introduced him to Mondlock’s music a few years ago. “When I listened to Buddy’s work, I was really struck by the imagery in his songwriting,” said DeGiorgi. “I think his songs are fabulous. ‘New Jersey Sunset’ makes you feel like you’re watching the best episodes of ‘The Sopranos.’ ‘Poetic Justice’ was written with Tom Kimmel, who has performed in this area a few times. Buddy is probably best known for writing ‘The Kid,’ recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1996.” DeGiorgi said he hopes for a good turnout for the show, even if residents aren’t familiar with Mondlock’s work. “I think it’s going to boil down to people trusting SMAC to

Chorus to offer an evening of international songs

oices lifted in traditional folk music from Canada, Mexico, Australia, Russia and other countries will fill Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta in early November when The Chorus of the Blue Ridge presents its fall performance, “Around the World in 80 Minutes.” Under the direction of organist, pianist, composer and founding director Aaron Garber, the 40-member choral ensemble will perform on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. at Trinity, as well as on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem. Selections will include: “Oh, Shenandoah” from the U.S., “O Canada,” Australia’s “Waltzing Matilda,” “De Colores” from Mexico, plus music representing Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Brazil and more. “It will be a truly international evening of song,” said chorus president Linda Worman. “It’s our 14th season; many of the voices have been with us from the inception. All of us are enthusiastic about this globetrotting program.” Past performances have included music ranging from classics (Haydn, Mozart) to show tunes (Cole Porter) to pops (“Great Love Songs of the 20th Century”). “It’s a hard-working group, led by a fantastically talented director,” Worman said. “Once this concert is over, we’ll begin preparing for our spring program, March 21 and 22 performances of the Garber/ [Richard] Bansemer-composed

oratorio, ‘Mary, the Mother of Jesus.’” A recognized regional talent who serves as director of music ministry at Trinity, Garber enhances musical offerings for SML residents and visitors in a variety of ways. “His talents as an organist, pianist, soloist, composer and conductor of our choir add immensely to our worship experience,” said the Rev. Phillip Bouknight, co-pastor at Trinity. “And his contacts with musicians in and around this area have brought us an incredible diversity of special music presentations that have enlivened our expressions of praise to Lord God.” Garber earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Bridgewater College (which later named him 2007 Young Alumnus of the Year) and, upon graduation, returned to the 2,000-acre, 500-cow family homestead in nearby Augusta County to make dairy farming his life’s work. “After two years of being on the farm full time, I realized I wanted to get back into music,” he said. “I actually remember the moment I knew: while milking cows one day, I reflected on my experiences as a student conductor and realized that conducting would be the best fit to my abilities and personality.” Garber, who went on to earn a master’s of music in choral conducting from the University of Tennessee, conducts the Lynchburg-based Jefferson Choral Society and has worked

all scored for full orchestra, chorus and soloists. “There are two parts I like most about my profession,” Garber said. “First is the teamwork that it takes for choirs to come together to make a concert effective. The second is the positive influence that music has on performers and audience members alike.”

Asked how he juggles leadership of so many groups and performances, Garber was matter-of-fact: “I work best with darts flying all around me. I do have a lot happening, but I know my limits and won’t exceed them.” – Jerry Hale

ifth-grader Gabe Hardy doesn’t enjoy math, but he does like writing stories he can read to his friend, Dottie Phillips. Gabe and Dottie are not in the same class at school. They aren’t even from the same generation, but the two are joined together for a story, a game or a puzzle during trips that Gabe and his Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy schoolmates make to Runk & Pratt’s nearby SML Retirement Village. “Every time I come here it’s like seeing a bunch of good friends,” said Gabe, 11. “I’ve known Miss Dottie for a long time.” And it’s a break from the books, which Gabe says he doesn’t mind. “I like that when I come here I don’t have to learn anything – except I get to learn about the residents, and they tell me their childhood stories,” he said. “It’s always a fun time.” Phillips, 90, said interacting with children is something she’s always enjoyed. “I used to be a kindergarten teacher, so when the younger ones come, I like that,” she said. SMLCA, which operates out of Halesford Baptist Church, is a private school serving 80 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Service to the community has been integral in all six years of the school’s existence, including the relationship with Runk & Pratt. Megan Smith, who teaches fourth and fifth grades, said the visits are valuable for both the students and the seniors. “The kids really enjoy interacting with the residents,” said Smith. “They always come away retelling stories that the seniors have shared with them. One student learned how to play checkers because a couple of the residents taught her how. Then, as she played another classmate, the residents watched and egged them on.”

Janie Bush, activities director for Runk & Pratt, said the residents and students enjoy a variety of activities together during the visits. “They will play games or put together puzzles. Sometimes a librarian from Westlake Library will come over and read to the whole group,” said Bush. The students brighten the holidays for the seniors by making and delivering Valentine’s Day cards and Christmas goody bags. They perform songs and read journal entries to the residents. The visits last about an hour, which Bush said is generally the amount of time residents can handle the children’s energy.

“The teachers have told me that it is the highlight of the students’ day to come and see us,” said Bush. “And the seniors light up as the children come through the door. It’s a win-win for both groups.” The school’s interim administrator Karen Hiltz said she believed the most important benefit for the students is the character lesson being developed through the partnership. “It encourages the students in community outreach,” said Hiltz. “One of our parents relayed to me that this is one of the most memorable activities her daughter has participated in at the school, that it has really helped her develop a heart for others.” Students who have participated in the visits to Runk & Pratt the longest know most of the residents by name and have built special friendships with one or two seniors in particular. During one recent visit, Gabe Hardy and Dottie Phillips chatted about family, careers, school and bingo. Phillips shared that she is originally from Kentucky and was married for 66 years. When she was teaching, she said students always had a difficult time moving up to the next grade each year. “Kids are always reluctant to go to the next grade,” Gabe agreed, sharing with his friend a desire to work as a scientist or a baker. As Hardy carried on about his love for cooking, Phillips warmly told him, “You can come and visit me anytime.”

he Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is distinctive in that all eight homes open to visitors on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 10-12, can be reached by lake and land. And, given that choice, die-hard Lakers likely will opt for the water route whenever possible. “Ken and I love being out on the water,” said SML resident and tour regular Jean Hurt. “We generally arrange for out-of-town guests to join us for tour weekend, and going from home to home by boat is a great way to show them the lake. Besides, often the homes show their very best from the lake approach.”

“If the weather’s good,” Ken Hurt added, “we definitely prefer the water route. It’s usually faster and easier to get between houses that way. Tour volunteers staff each dock to assist with docking and to help get tour-goers in and out of their boats. They even remind us not to leave our tickets on board. If it appears there will be a long wait for docking space, we just move on and return when it is less crowded.” Others use the “designated driver” approach, wherein a skipper drops off passengers and then lingers nearby while tour-goers explore each home. This year’s tour is efficient by water, with the homes concentrated on the lower Roanoke (all below

When heading downstream (toward the dam), odd-numbered (green) channel markers will be on the right, and even-numbered (red) markers will be on the left. Going upstream (away from the dam), the opposite will be true. Lower-numbered markers are nearer the dam. Channel markers do not indicate distance to the dam or to one another, but rather channel boundaries in numerical sequence. It is prudent to stay well clear of all markers, especially if water is below full pond at the time of the tour. Watch for floating debris, especially if there has been significant rain. Unless otherwise directed, keep to the right side of river channels. Orange banners will mark the dock of each Charity Home Tour home and volunteers will be on hand to assist boaters. At some homes, more than one dock will be in use; at others, dock space may be limited, and boaters may have to wait their turn to tie up. Do not use any dock where there is no one available to help with docking.

Munn Home

The Munn home underwent a makeover, including total house renovations, an addition, and extensive landscaping/hardscaping to resolve drainage issues. Little remains of the original appearance of the building or property. The addition included a garage, music room, master suite and exercise room with additional space underneath. New elements include beams, wood doors, trim and railings, all portraying the architect’s “Lux Lodge” Arts and Crafts design. The kitchen and fireplace were redone, and hardwood floors were installed. The remodeled deck has a wide view of Betty’s Creek. New exterior elements include roof extensions, stone and a new dock, all complementing the style. Engineered boulder walls retain the embankments on this sloping lot. The 5,000-square-foot Brownell/Shaw home was completely remodeled and redesigned by the homeowners in the Arts and Crafts style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. A paver driveway becomes a path to the lake, passing ponds, a waterfall, stone patio and firepit. The path to the dock is steep, so use caution. BY BOAT: Backtrack out the Montego Bay cove to the main channel, keeping the two shoal markers where you enter the main channel to your right. Head down the Roanoke River toward Vista Pointe condos, avoiding the shoal markers between R11 and R8 (adjacent to the Bernard’s Landing Marina cove). Pass R6, then angle left around R4 and R2 and on toward the dam’s cut. Spot W1 in the distance at your 11 o’clock bearing and head toward it. Pass W1 on your left and follow that shore until you point toward the cove’s center finger. Enter that and look for the dock flag and totem pole about a third of a mile down, on the righthand shoreline of that finger. Approximate run time: 25-30 minutes

he SML Wine Festival, which began in 1988 with just a few local wineries, has grown to include 27 wineries from around the state, representing a vast assortment of winemaking philosophies. Every style of wine – from light, sweet fruit-based wines to serious French and Italian-styled varieties – will be represented. In addition, 85 vendors will be on hand showcasing a variety of arts and crafts, and live music is scheduled for both days. With so much activity, you may be wondering how to get the most out of the lake’s most popular event. Following are some expert tips, honed over years of attending various wine festivals.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Start by visiting the websites of the attending wineries in advance and learning which wineries make the style of wine that interest you. If you enjoy fruit-based wines, take a look at Brooks Mill Winery and Peaks of Otter Winery. If you prefer more classical, European-style wines, consider finding out more about Barboursville, Virginia Mountain Vineyards, Rockbridge and Fincastle Vineyard. Prince Michel, Chateau Morrisette and Williamsburg Winery, the three largest wineries in the state, run the gamut from sweet, fruity wines to big reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon. This time of year, the weather can range from sweltering hot to cool and rainy. As one who has visited the SML Wine Festival many times, I have seen all of the above weather patterns. If it looks like a hot day, a hat will help keep you cool and water may be purchased at the festival. If the forecast calls for rain, take an umbrella and wear your galoshes – the festival takes place rain or shine.

It’s worth noting that the vibe at the SML Wine Festival differs on the two days of the event. Saturday tends to be party central with large numbers of people tasting away and having a good time. Sunday is quieter with a more studious and reflective crowd. If you desire to speak personally with winemakers and grape growers to learn more about how wine is made, I recommend attending on Sunday. Discovering techniques used to make the type of wines you like will help you find wine made in your favored style in the future.

PLAN YOUR APPROACH

You could visit all 27 booths and sample everything available – a strategy that virtually guarantees you’ll be tossing your cookies at some point during the day. In addition to sheer quantity, the hot weather that often accompanies the wine festival can exacerbate the effects of alcohol. Consider a smarter approach. First, if you intend to drink more than a few samples, make sure you’ve lined up a designated driver (discount tickets are available). You also can make arrangements to stay with lake-area friends or at a nearby hotel or condo and drive home the following day. Second, after you taste the wine, spit it out so as to not ingest too much alcohol. Professional wine-shop buyers and restaurant owners always spit when sampling copious wines at trade tastings, thereby avoiding bad wine-purchasing decisions made with impaired judgment. While spitting sounds

like a disgusting breach of etiquette, it can be done discretely. Carry a plastic cup with you and hold it close to your mouth when expectorating. When the cup gets full, slip to an area bereft of people and pitch the wine into the grass. When you get into your car to leave, you will be glad you don’t have a stomach full of wine. Law enforcement officers at the festival will detain anyone who is visibly intoxicated until he or she has a designated driver. Finally, be selective. Just as you would not want to taste every item sold in a supermarket, you don’t have to taste every wine available at a wine festival.

TAKE NOTES AND SAVE

You may find jotting down notes about wines to be useful. I use a clipboard with a wine-glass holder clamped to it. If you find some wines you like, consider buying a few bottles or even a case to take home and enjoy. Most wineries offer graduated discounts on multiple bottles, so the more you buy, the more you save. The SML Wine Festival also provides a wine pickup service where purchased bottles are transported by a volunteer in a cart to a pickup point near the exit gate. The free service allows you to collect your purchased wine when you leave and avoid lugging it around all day.

Balloons & Tunes

Now in its third year, the lake’s hot air balloon event has been expanded to include additional festival activities. According to organizer Michelle Aznavorian, the renamed Balloons & Tunes will feature a cruise-in of classic cars and motorcycles, live music, food vendors and artisan vendors starting at 3 p.m. Tethered hot air balloon rides will be available for $20 per person beginning at 6 p.m. The balloons will rise about 100 feet but stay tethered to the ground, Aznavorian explained. “This year, it will be a five-minute ride, instead of just up and right back down,” she said. “That will definitely give people more time so they can look around. The ticket also can be applied toward a private chartered flight.” After dark, the hot air balloons will be lit up in a glow ceremony before rising into the air. Balloonists will be available for private flights Sept. 5-8. Cost for a three-hour adventure (one hour of flight time) is $250 per person. Now in its fourth year, this event commemorates the Sesquicentennial period of the Civil War, which is being recognized from 2009 through 2015, according to event chairman Phil Sheridan. Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities will include living history and military demonstrations for local school children. Events on Saturday and Sunday are open for the public to explore military camps; browse artisan and food vendors; and view living history presentations and military demonstrations, which include portrayals of generals Jubal Early, Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart. A battle reenactment is scheduled each day at 2 p.m.

SML Antique & Classic Boat Show and Festival

Now in its 24th year, this popular lakeside event allows antique and classic boat enthusiasts to share their appreciation of the vessels with the public. According to organizer George Blosser, more than 50 boats will be on display, along with approximately 25 antique and custom cars. SML Dragon Boat Race & Festival A benefit for the Presbyterian Community Center in Roanoke, the Dragon Boat Race and Festival is moving from mid-September to the first Saturday in October. Now in its third year, the event involves teams comprised of

19-25 crew members who race in a 44-footlong canoe-like fiberglass and wooden boats adorned with brightly colored scales and an ornate dragon head and tail. The Pan American Dragon Boat Association will provide all boats, paddles, life jackets, pre-race practice sessions and steering staff. Team registration is available online at smldragonboatrace.com. Race spectators are welcome. Those who want to watch the races are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

On Columbus Day weekend, eight waterfront homes will be open for tours to the general public to benefit eight lake-area charities. All homes are accessible by water and by road. drian Mack said writing a book to express his views on life and business in the context of Christianity had been on his mind for several years before events in 2012 and 2013 provided him the inspiration to get started. “In the summer of 2012, I went through a huge discernment process about the American Dream,” said Mack, a graduate of Franklin County High

School and the University of Virginia, who was preparing to enroll at Duke to earn a master’s degree in Christian Studies. “After much deliberation during my time in grad school at Duke, it was time for me to decide which career path I was going to pursue. Everything I learned during my one-year master’s program was put to the test in my life as I stood at the edge of entering the ‘real world.’” Mack said the experiences made him eager to share his views on balancing religious and professional life. The result was “God Bless America: The Discourse Between the American Dream & Christianity,” which he self-published in October 2013.

hen son Jimmy went off to college, Hubs had visions of leisurely autumn weekends spent reading the entire paper, taking long walks with the dog and tinkering in the garage for hours on end. As an emptynester, he would own his weekend, and it would be wonderful. Oh, silly man. Fall brings with it the most wonderful of times – the season of the festival. Unencumbered by parental obligations, I am now free to drag Hubby to every pumpkin patch, apple orchard and corn maze on the East Coast. As temperatures dip, my quest to find the ugliest of pumpkins – someone has to rescue them – pick bushels of apples, and get lost among the corn stalks reaches a fever pitch. Hey, he knew I was this way when he married me. There is one festival that Hubs puts up little resistance to attending – the queen of all events at Smith Mountain Lake: the wine festival. Here at SML, we have a humdinger of a gathering the last weekend of September each year. What? You’ve never been to the wine festival? Well then, let me provide a few expert tips, because this event is not to be missed. Safety Comes First. You absolutely need a designated driver (DD). No joking around with this one. It’s a serious downer when the Po-Po has to get involved. Draw straws, pick names out of a hat, hire a driver, whatever it takes. Oh, and remember to bring your driver’s license. license and you’ll become the DDD: Designated Driver by Default. Keep it Classy. Despite what others may tell you, it is not cool to spit the wine. If you don’t like what you taste, swallow and move on. Remember to show a little class. It’s a wine festival. Your mama raised you better than that. Dress for Success. You’re going to want to keep both hands free. Left hand is for your glass, righty remains open for handshakes. If you must carry a purse, make sure it slings across the front. It’s no fun to find yourself exclaiming, “Damn, where’d I put down my purse?” Hubs draws the line at holding my bag while I swig vino. Don’t Be the Drunk Girl. We’ve all met her, the one person in the group who can’t hold her alcohol. The one who had to have just one more glass, and is now stumbling around the festival grounds or throwing up in the corner of the food tent. The girl who, instead of folding her arms and resting her head on the table, crawls up on top, lays down and passes out. I repeat: Don’t be the drunk girl. It’s Not “So You Think You Can Dance.” These days, just about everyone has a camera on their mobile phone, many capable of taking high-def video. If you’re going to dance in front of the band, and you’re hammered, you’re going to end up on YouTube under the title: “Drunk Girl Dancing at Wine Festival – this is HILARIOUS. Must watch! “ Follow these basic rules and you’ll have a blast at the wine festival. Oh, and be on the lookout for me. I’ll be the one in sensible shoes, wearing a broad brimmed hat, munching a freshly picked apple with Hubby in tow. He might even be carrying my purse.
