(left) were so honored to accept, on behalf of Laker Media, one of the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce’s top awards at the organization’s annual dinner in January. The Regional Advocate Award is voted on by the membership and presented to the business that has exhibited creativity in promoting this region as well as its own business. (Check out all of the evening’s winners on page 77.) At Laker Media, we strive to produce the area’s top publications by telling stories of the area’s people, events and news. What makes our jobs easier is that Smith Mountain Lake is rich with interesting personalities and lively happenings. To be recognized by our peers in the business community for presenting your stories in a creative way is extremely flattering. It’s also a testament to the talents and hard work of the people whose photos you see to the right and the staff of our sister publication, Laker Weekly, which includes editor Liz Hock and reporter Laurie Edwards. I enjoyed the mild winter and am looking forward to spring at Smith Mountain Lake, a time when many of us get started on indoor and outdoor projects. This issue, our annual Home & Garden Guide, includes stories to inspire you, including features on the latest kitchen and bath trends (page 35) and how one local couple is enjoying the benefits of an impressive solar energy system (page 42). In addition, our annual guide to SML home and garden professionals (broken down into 29 categories) starts on page 52. It’s a reference you’ll want to keep handy all year long.

Deborah Beran of Moneta endured a heat wave while traveling through Italy in August 2011 with her sister-in-law, Diana Beran of Richmond. Diana snapped this photo of Deborah in front of the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa. The campanile, which was built in three stages over a 177-year period beginning in 1173, started to sink due to a weak foundation shortly after construction began. After a major stabilization effort from 1990 to 2001, the tower now leans at approximately 4 degrees.
Italy Denmark Glenda and Bill Trimmer and Charlotte and Carl Peed of Moneta traveled in September 2011 to Copenhagen where they enjoyed beautiful scenery and friendly residents. In addition to taking in the sites, the couples also cheered on the Peeds’ niece, Evelyn Stevens, an elite road cyclist who competed for the U.S. team in the women’s World Cycling Championships.
Philadelphia Grayson Hart (left) of Hardy and Stephen Hart, a student at Liberty University, road-tripped to Philiadelphia last October where they posed with the Laker in front of the Liberty Bell at Independence National Historical Park. The cousins also visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art where they enjoyed a rare exhibit of work by Rembrandt on loan from the Louvre in Paris.
Canada Bev and Fred Waddell of Moneta paused for this photo with the Laker along Wilcox Pass, a popular hiking trail in the Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. In the background is Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia Icefield. The Waddells, who were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, spent a week in late July hiking the trails between Jasper and Banff at an elevation of approximately 4,800 feet.
London Ray, Tina and Jamie Ramirez of Moneta took the Laker on a 10-day trip to Paris and London, which is where they had this photo snapped. In the background is Big Ben, the nickname given to the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster.

However, visitors need take only one step inside to realize this home has a unique – some might say “refreshing” – quality to it. “That lamp was what started it all,” said Doreen with a sigh, pointing to the red, stained-glass CocaCola lamp hanging above the breakfast table. “And I was the one who said, ‘We need more light in this [first] apartment. How about a Coke lamp?’” That was in 1976 when the Fagas were first married and living in Brooklyn, N.Y. The couple looked for seven months and finally found an authentic glass

fixture in a fireplace store. That purchase led to what the couple describes as “a moderate-size collection” of Coca-Cola memorabilia – although those outside collector circles would likely call the accumulation extensive. The Fagas’ interest in Coke-brand memorabilia grew slowly over the years. Friends would point out items they spotted at various locations (including trash dumps), or they’d bring back bottles from trips — both foreign and domestic. “One of the wonderful things about building this house was being able to design spaces to showcase the Coke items we’ve acquired over 36 years,” said Rich, who explained that neither he nor his wife ever worked for the Coca-Cola Company. Rich was employed by IBM and, after taking early retirement, worked as a substitute teacher and school computer lab technician. Doreen was an actuary. The couple raised three sons in a lake community in New Jersey and later moved to Needham, Mass. When searching for a permanent retirement area, the Fagas looked up and down the East Coast. They said

SML HOME & GARDEN they selected SML for the mountain and lake views, moderate weather and young retiree population. In 2006, they purchased their lot in Compass Cove and rented while the home was being planned and built. The home’s main floor features an open concept: the great room flows into the spacious kitchen and dining room that accommodates visiting children and spouses. A pantry with plenty of shelves and a freezer was one of Doreen’s requisites. A cozy porch just off the kitchen has a fireplace and a view of the cove. The master suite is on the main level. Its sea-green wall color was selected with the help of interior designer Janice Thurman of Envisions Distinctive Interiors, who also assisted the couple with window treatments, flooring, tile and bold wall color selections elsewhere in the house. “Rich wanted blue, and I wanted green here,” Doreen said. “I won this one, but he got his blue downstairs.” Rich’s office is located on the main level while Doreen’s, which doubles as an additional guest suite, is upstairs “away from Rich’s music and noise,” she noted. Visitors drink in the main portion of the Coke collection when they enter the lower level, which Rich designed to tastefully showcase the memorabilia. Huge framed Coke-themed puzzles line a hallway. A Coke village has illuminated stained-glass houses. There’s also an original Coke tube radio, replica cable car, airplane, helicopter, fishing rod, thermometer, neon sign, pillows, chair fabric, sheet music and records, even light switch plates. Much of this level, however, spotlights the beverage itself. Elegant Kitchens of Rocky Mount

LAKE HOMES
HOME JOURNAL Doreen’s Top Spot The screened porch with the outdoor fireplace. “The three-season porch is a great spot to enjoy ‘being outdoors’ without the bugs. It’s shaded, and the ceiling fan provides a breeze. If it’s cool at night, we can light the fireplace. It’s a cozy spot for reading, cocktails and conversation.” The Lake Factor To ensure they had an unobstructed view of the lake from their home, which sits atop a knoll in Compass Cove, the Fagas used glass railing on the upper deck. Instead of a solid pane, the homeowners chose slats to allow for additional air flow. Biggest Splurges The whole-house sound system and lower-level theater room. “The theater room is a gathering place to enjoy movies and sports with family and friends. The reclining stadium seats are very comfortable,” Doreen said. “The sound system gives us the ability to access all stored music from our iTunes library anywhere in the home.”
created a built-in wall unit, which houses the collection of filled Coca-Cola bottles arranged by category, including international, Christmas, sports, Olympics and specialty themes. Over the years, the Fagas have collected the prized bottles during their travels – including a trip to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta – and from friends, garage sales, the Coca-Cola collector’s club and online. Most of the Fagas’ large pieces have an interesting story behind them: a friend found a cooler in a trash heap; they bought a big sign off the side of a building in New York City; they discovered a 1937 Coke lithograph – Doreen’s favorite piece, which is framed for display on the main level – on the back of a dresser in an antique store. The lake level is also home to two additional guest suites and a home theater with eight cushy recliners. Though the home includes a two-car garage upstairs, a single garage below is used for storage and to house Rich’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The Fagas’ dock houses a Hurricane deck boat named SeaCola, which complements the name they gave the home: the Sea Cola Inn. And make no mistake about it, it’s the real thing. ABOVE The screened porch overlooking the lake includes a fireplace and cozy seating area. RIGHT Clockwise from top, clear slats on the upper-level deck provide an unobstructed view of the lake and allow for air flow; a stamped concrete walkway leads to the front entrance of the Faga home; the lower-level home theater includes seating for eight. Though it hasn’t made headlines recently, the nanny tax is still around – and it still applies to other household workers in addition to nannies. Here’s what you need to know.
What is the nanny tax? It’s simply employment
taxes on the wages you pay to certain domestic workers, such as baby sitters or housekeepers. If you paid a domestic worker more than $1,700 in 2011 (or will pay more than $1,800 in 2012), you may be required to report and pay social security and Medicare taxes on their wages. You could owe federal unemployment tax if you paid all your employees more than $1,000 in any calendar quarter.
To whom does the tax apply? It doesn’t matter what type of work is performed (gardening, baby sitting, nursing, or general household chores). What does matter is whether your worker is considered to be your employee or an independent contractor. Independent contractors are typically self-employed and, therefore, exempt from the nanny tax. Generally, if you control how and when workers do their jobs, they’re probably your employees. Independent contractors operate their own businesses. For example, a nanny who takes care of your kids in your home is probably an employee, but a day care provider who cares for many children is not. Some employees are exempt. For example, you generally don’t have to pay nanny taxes on wages paid to your spouse, your child under age 21, or any employee under age 18. But there are exceptions, so you should check the rules carefully.
Avoid penalties and interest. If you fail to pay the tax, you could be liable for interest and penalties on the tax owed, and possibly even a penalty for underpaying estimated taxes. You might also have obligations to pay state employment taxes. If you hire someone to work in your home, it’s worth contacting our office to discuss your tax obligations.

ven at Smith Mountain Lake, where the pace of living is slower, sometimes it feels as if life is spinning out of control and we’re not so much managing time as being controlled by it. In the garden, we have the opportunity to slow down. There’s a rhythm there that transcends the modern world’s time-driven agendas. Time in the garden unfolds slowly, driven by the sun and the seasons. And so the nicest – and time-honored – way to mark the hours in the garden is with an ancient timekeeping device, the sundial. Sundials speak of a simpler age when life was less frenetic – or so we like to think. Many are inscribed with mottoes that can amuse. For example, there’s ABOVE From left, as long as the sun is shining, you’ll know you’re on time for lunch at this table that incorporates a sundial; sculpted by M. Earl Cummings in 1905 for the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the faces of this sundial depict the first three navigators to the California coast: Fortuno Ximenes, Juan De Cabrillo and Sir Francis Drake. LEFT A sundial designed by David Harber is displayed in London. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

LEFT Located in the gardens at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, this sundial provides a focal point as well as vertical interest. ABOVE The sundial at Queen’s College in Cambridge, England, shows the time, the signs of the zodiac, the sun’s altitude and direction, the time of sunrise and the length of the day. It also enables time telling by moonlight.
While it is not known for certain who first invented the sundial, historians suspect it was the Babylonians in what is present-day Iraq. “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be,” and “Let others tell of storms and showers, I’ll only mark your sunny hours.” On a more cautionary note are those inscriptions that urge us to face our mortality: “Me ortum vides forsan non occasum” (Thou hast seen me rise but mayst not see me set) or Confucius’ admonition that, “An inch of time on the sundial is worth more than a foot of jade.”
SUNDIALS THROUGH TIME
While it is not known for certain who first invented the sundial, historians suspect it was the Babylonians in what is present-day Iraq. The idea makes sense, as the ancient Babylonians were known to be advanced mathematicians and astronomers. Adding credence to the theory is the Greek historian Herodotus who wrote in about 450 B.C., “It was from the Babylonians that the Greeks learned about the pole, the gnomon, and the 12 parts of the day.” The Greeks improved on the early sun clocks, making them ever more 28 March • April 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
complex and ingenious. Their knowledge was passed to the Romans, who gave us the word “dial” from the Latin word dies for day since a sundial marks the 12 divisions of the day according the sun’s placement in the sky. For the most part, people were grateful for the invention of a way to mark the hours, although the Roman comic poet and dramatist Titus Maccius Plautus (about 254-184 BC) wrote a poem condemning “the wretch who first ... set a sundial in the marketplace to chop my day to pieces.” His lament on the tyranny of time resonates through the centuries.
21ST CENTURY SUNDIALS
Today, most gardeners are more interested in the decorative qualities of a sundial than they are in its time-keeping properties. Mass produced and generally inexpensive, sundials are available in garden centers, through mail-order catalogs or online. However, for those who want to get serious about keeping time by the sun, it is possible to buy finely made and calibrated sundials that are works of art. The science and art of sundials, called gnomonics, is enjoying a renaissance. Surf the web and you’ll find scads of artisans who are making fine sundials designed to be works of art as well as accurate timekeepers.

SETTING ACCURATE SUNDIAL TIME In order to keep correct time, a horizontal sundial must be calibrated to its location. Use a protractor to set the gnomon (the sundial arm that casts the shadow) so the upper angled edge (called the style) is at 37 degrees, the latitude for Smith Mountain Lake. Shim the face of the dial, adjusting it until it’s sitting at that angle.
Clockise from top left, various creeping thyme plants fill the gaps between the hours on this enormous sundial at the Real Goods Solar Center in Hopland, Calif.; a sundial set into stone building in Cambridge, England; this simple plinth and dial adds interest to an outdoor space at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens near Leesburg.
ORNAMENTAL VALUE
Whether an inexpensive item or a fine work of art, sundials are delightful ornamental features in the garden. A vertical sundial makes a lovely focal point on a bare wall, breaking up the blank expanse. Make sure the wall faces due south. In a garden where the design is primarily horizontal, consider placing a sundial on a pedestal to add height. Put one in the center of your lawn as a focal point, or at the end of a path to lure strollers to walk the length. A sundial or other tall ornament is the traditional focal point to a symmetrical, formal garden as well as to formally laid-out herb gardens, but it is equally at home in an informal, cottage-style garden surrounded by bouquets of flowers jostling each other for position. 30 March • April 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
In the northern hemisphere, the gnomon should point to the number 12, and must also face the North Star, which is geographic or true north. To determine geographic north, level the surface where you plan to set the dial. Draw several concentric circles on the ground centered on the spot for the sundial. One circle will do, but if you make several, you are not tied down to a specific time of day to take your measurements. Fix a dowel or stake into the ground at the exact center of the circles, making sure the stick is absolutely perpendicular to the ground. In the morning, watch the shadow cast by the dowel, and mark the point where it touches one of the circles. Go back in the afternoon and watch for the shadow to touch the same circle on the opposite side. If you make the first mark at 9 a.m., three hours before noon, you can expect the shadow to hit the circle on the opposite side at about 3 p.m., six hours later. Mark that point and draw a line between these two points. Draw another line that bisects the first at right angles. Position the sundial so the gnomon points north along the second line.

hile construction and fix-up projects are not as prolific as they were during the boom years — both at Smith Mountain Lake and nationally – there’s certainly enough happening for professionals to assess what customers are seeking. SML design and installation pros can also point to local trends that mimic and complement what’s happening nationally.

The Cabinet Gallery at Westlake Towne Center is the area’s newest one-stop shop for kitchen and bath design and installation. Recently opened by Connie Hall, who operated the original Kitchens by Connie in the same location for nine years prior to a move from the SML area in 2004, the store features several kitchen and bath displays that serve to stimulate design conversations with customers. “In this slow-moving real estate market, people are viewing their homes differently,” Hall said. “It’s no longer about ‘build and flip for profit.’ It’s about creating comfortable, functional and attractive spaces that will be enjoyed over the long term.”

COMMITMENT TO COLOR AND TEXTURE Bold, vibrant colors on walls and backsplashes, often in the tangerine/mango/carrot family, are being paired with exotic wood cabinetry, often in “chocolate” or “espresso” tones. Textures, actual or implied, add to the visual and tactile feast. THE GLITTER OF GLASS Many of this year’s kitchen and bath designs use lighted panels of mica art glass or glasstiled backsplashes shining from behind granite counter tops to provide a pop of color and light against the warmth of wood cabinetry.
TRENDS Hall also pointed to the preference for naturallook materials, as in granite countertops finished in leathered and “tumbled” matte textures for a more natural look and feel. Thick wood countertops are also popular, especially in black walnut, mahogany, zebra-striped and tiger-striped woods. “Lighting can be as important as finishes in making kitchen spaces fit entertaining lifestyles,” Hall said. “We’re using indirect lighting above and below cabinets and even rope lighting in toe-kick recesses near the floor. People are seeking a soft, inviting look, especially when the kitchen is an extension of the great room or other gathering area.” Customers are using decorative range hoods, usually custom built with intricate corbels and trims. High cabinets are often installed with glass-fronts and showcase lighting for display of favorite accent pieces.
“It’s no longer about ‘build and flip for profit.’ It’s about creating comfortable, functional and attractive spaces that will be enjoyed over the long term.” Connie Hall, The Cabinet Gallery
FREESTANDING AND ANGLED TUBS Large, freestanding tubs are front-and-center in master bath designs, visible through wide French doors that lead to the bedroom space. Often situated on a “stage” of stone or wood flooring, the soaking tub is a focal point of master baths that incorporate relaxation areas. WALK-IN PANTRIES Open-plan kitchens, with fewer walls and cabinets, drive the need for a separate pantry for storage of dishes, serving items and foodstuffs. Some even incorporate sinks for firstpass dish cleanup. NATURAL ELEMENTS Bringing the beauty of nature inside the home, especially in baths and powder rooms, is popular. Stone countertops and accents, leather-wrapped cabinetry, smoky gray, brown and icy-white color accents are all trending. INLAID FLOORING Envision natural travertine separated by woodlook ceramic tile to mimic a parquet floor. Old boundaries are being stretched with new materials and creative installations.
“’Inset’ doors that close into rather than over cabinet frames are all the rage,” Hall noted. “Custom concealed-storage areas, like pet supply areas, electronic device charging stations and beverage centers, are often designed in from the start.” In bathrooms, Hall said she is seeing increased use of vessel sinks, commonly mounted atop repurposed-furniture or custombuilt vanities. Fixture companies are offering a variety of watersaving faucet designs as well. Oasis Cabinets in Burnt Chimney is another local resource Connie Hall, owner of The Cabinet for cabinets and kitchen design. “As relative newcomers, we’re Gallery at Westlake Towne Center using a combination of quality and service plus attractive pricing to establish ourselves,” said co-owner Robbie Shepherd. “We typically use custom cabinets from Roanoke’s Rich Maid Kabinetry, and see glazed finishes, staggered heights and frequent use of turned legs and other features that add a depth dimension to cabinet fronts. Granite countertops remain popular, often with tile backsplashes.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

ABOVE This lake-area kitchen features appliances integrated into the cabinetry for a clean look. BELOW The kitchen in the model home at The Courtyards of Mayberrry incorporates cabinets of staggered height and glass-front accents.
RENEWABLE AND INTEGRATED
When Dan DeNeal of DeNeal’s Cabinets says green is definitely “in,” he’s not referring to color. “Sixty percent of the cabinets we are doing are [made] of Lyptus, a South American timber that matures in just 10 years,” DeNeal said. “Bamboo veneer, another fast-growing renewable, is also very popular — for cabinetry, floors, even countertops. It can be stained about any color.” DeNeal added, “Integrated appliances — wine coolers, ice-makers, for example — are very popular. Some of the work we’ve done at bars and other commercial rehabs is translating into home installations.
“Ice is a big part of lake living. These units make round or square cubes, not the half-moons that come out of refrigerator freezers. Some people find that appealing.” Les Kuhn, Kitchens at the Lake
Les Kuhn, who owns Kitchens at the Lake, said he’s also receiving more requests for under-counter icemakers. “Ice is a big part of lake living,” he said. “These units make round or square cubes, not the halfmoons that come out of refrigerator freezers. Some people find that appealing.”
CONVENIENCE RULES
According to Capps Home Building Center kitchen design specialist Russ Kemmerer, today’s kitchen design is about functionality and convenience. “The lifestyles of most Lakers who build or remodel are pretty well established,” Kemmerer said. “They know by now how they cook and entertain, and they want their kitchens to function accordingly. We incorporate the resulting preferences into their designs as much as possible.” That leads to functionality features like slide-out storage shelves and deep drawers for mixers, pots SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM
37
SML HOME & GARDEN and pans; custom utensil and spice drawers; lazy Susans in corners and pull-out trash and recycling bins. “The kitchen is where guests and family congregate, so homeowners also want an open, inviting social space,” Kemmerer said. “Large islands, frequently in colors that contrast to the perimeter counters and cabinets, serve that purpose.” Work zones, such as a separate preparation area to minimize food contamination possibilities, often expand or nullify the traditional “nine-foot work triangle,” said Kemmerer, who also said “increased use of exotic-looking countertops of natural materials is trending. Granite often gets finished with leather-look or matte textures to add a natural feel.”
APPLIANCE PARADISE
Lake-area appliance shoppers can get that kidin-a-candy-store feeling with a stop at the new Sears Hometown Store in Downtown Moneta. Sales associate Sandy McNamara pointed to the 25-cubicfoot Kenmore Elite refrigerator/freezer as an example of how designers are addressing updated customer preferences. Among the innovations: sideby-side fridge doors (with alarms that can be set to signal doors being opened) designed so the space exposed to warm air when the door is opened is cut in half; an icemaker hidden in the door where it doesn’t impinge on freezer space; soft LED interior lighting that is both energy efficient and eye-appealing; a separate mid-height sliding refrigerator drawer, ideal for storing beverages and other things that kids can access without opening a large main door. “Shelving is really versatile and designed so things don’t get hidden and lost,” McNamara said. “Air doesn’t transfer between fridge and freezer, minimizing flavor contamination and allowing separate humidity controls that eliminate freezer burn and soggy produce.” Stainless steel remains the “hot” finish for appliances, though some colors (primarily grays and light blues) are showing up in floating glass panels for dishwasher fronts. Kitchens at the Lake’s Kuhn noted that high-end, commercial-style cook tops and other appliances from manufacturers such as Sub-Zero, Wolf and Viking are becoming the norm for those who can afford them. Paul Sinclair of Vinton Appliance agreed. “There are more choices today than ever before, including commercial-grade, 48- and 60-inch ranges,” Sinclair said. “People are entertaining at home more and investing in their kitchens accordingly.” LEFT From top, stainless steel appliances, like the ones in this kitchen, remain popular among SML homeowners; high-end appliances from companies such as Kenmore (refrigerator), Wolf (single oven) and Viking (double oven) are becoming the norm for those who can afford them. 38 March • April 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

SML HOME & GARDEN “Quiet” is the operative word in dishwashers. Motor noise is completely masked by the more appealing sound of sloshing water, held to an in-obtrusive 54 decibels or below. For ovens, the word is “convection” – units that cook with circulating air for steady temperatures that don’t abuse meats by cycling on and off like traditional heating elements. Some even automatically convert from standard-recipe cooking times to the quicker times achieved with convection. Energy efficiency has also become an important factor for many appliance buyers. Think ovens with a full width, six-inch-deep warming drawer, ideal for baking a pizza or tray of biscuits without heating the entire oven. “Double ovens with convection up top and a warming drawer under are in demand,” said Deborah Stone, store manager for Ferguson Bath and Kitchen Gallery at Westlake Towne Center. “There’s also interest in island ranges with free-hanging hoods ... and lately we’re getting requests for cooktops with induction burners that boil water in 30 seconds and cool instantly once a pot is removed.”

hen the sun shines brightly at Smith Mountain Lake, many residents appreciate such pleasures as a boating excursion, outdoor dining and clear mountain views. Brian and Lisa Raub, who live in The Waterfront, appreciate one more thing: help with their energy bill. “Usually, in the spring and fall when the heat or air conditioning is not on but the daylight hours are still fairly long, that’s when it is generating a lot of electricity,” said Lisa Raub, referring to the 5-kilowatt solar panel system the couple had installed at their home in 2010. “It all comes down to how bright the sunshine is on the panels and for how many hours at a time.” The Raubs researched alternative energy sources for several years before choosing a solar method for their 10-year-old, 3,300-square-foot home. “It became a greater consideration for us as the energy crisis developed, as the oil situation deteriorated worldwide,” Brian Raub said. “Even the use of fossil fuels is something that some people would like to see reduced. It also started becoming more economical to use alternatives, so we started to look into it.” Investigation soon became investment after the couple crossed paths with Brian Brown, owner of Martinsville-based Renewable Engineered Systems. “We asked him to come out to the property and take a look to let us know what it might cost us,” Brian Raub said. “When he told us what to expect, we said all right, go for it.” Renewable Engineered Systems installed nine solar panels on the Raub’s roof in October of 2010. In December, the couple hosted an open house and ribbon cutting to celebrate what was the company’s first 5-kilowatt solar installation. In order to transfer the solar power properly, the Raub’s electric company, American Electric Power, installed a converter box at no cost. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Brown said he designs each system based on each client’s energy consumption and home size. He added that the systems, which typically start around $25,000 and can often be financed, require virtually no maintenance, have a 25-year guarantee and about a 50-year lifespan. The Raubs estimate the solar system has decreased their monthly electric bills 40-60 percent. Since both work from home, the couple said their usage tends to be higher than average. Brian Raub said though it is possible to transfer excess energy produced by their system back into the local power grid, that would be a rare occurrence. “To have a net feed back into the grid over a month’s time, you would have to be away, or essentially not using the power as you collect it on a 5-kilowatt system such as we have,” he said. Converting part of their energy source to solar was as much about environmental conservation as it was a financial consideration for the Raubs. Since it would take years to see financial gains from the system they purchased, the decision to install the panels went beyond lowering electric bills, Brian Raub explained. “People say, ‘Well, it doesn’t make sense according to payback,’ and it doesn’t, not immediately. It’s not strictly an economic decision. For us it was also about lifestyle, a decision to lower our carbon footprint and reduce our use of coal,” he said.
ABOVE Workers install solar panels on the roof of Brian and Lisa Raub’s home in The Waterfront Country Club community in October 2010. RIGHT Brian Raub checks the box provided by AEP that converts the power created by the solar system into usable electricity.
As the cost of solar panels declines, the economics will become more attractive for homeowners, he noted. “There are government tax benefits and incentives … and as electric company rates increase and time passes, the system saves you more,” he said. “[Renewable energy systems] also have a dramatic impact on for-sale houses because of the novelty. Nationwide, people are paying a greater premium for a solar house.” Brown said in the year and a half since the Raubs’ installation, the area demand for solar panels has increased. “Renewable energy is for people who have an eye on their investment,” Brown said. “The people who invest money to save money are the type to use renewable energy systems. Now, because of electricity costs ... it makes a lot of sense financially. People are very excited to invest money into a system for their home.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Smith Mountain Lake is more than “the jewel of the Blue Ridge.” It is a complex ecosystem whose well-being affects what we see when we look out the window, how we feel after taking a dip in its serene waters, and whether we fib about (or only slightly exaggerate) the success of our most recent fishing trip.
S
ML residents and visitors take great pleasure from being in or near the water because it is, in the words of Smith Mountain Lake Association’s Stan Smith, “excellent quality.” Yet enough human missteps can change the health of the lake and the pleasure we take in it, including, as all homeowners should know, property values. Simply put, a clean lake contributes to increased property values while one that is polluted can mean relatively decreased ones. “You’re not going to buy a house on a lake where you can’t use the water for recreational purposes,” said Smith, chairman of SMLA’s water quality monitoring committee. While that may seem intuitive, it is important for homeowners to understand the science that affects lake livability and waterfront property values so they can help maintain the health of Smith Mountain Lake. For the past five years, Delia Heck, assistant professor of environmental science at Ferrum College, has led undergraduate science students in the Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Program. The program, a joint effort between Ferrum and SMLA, has thrived for a quarter of a century. At the end of the summer, their labor results in the production of a 100-page scientific report that Heck processes into a four-page newsletter called The Lake Monitor. The publication summarizes Smith Mountain Lake’s trophic state index in plain language and is available to the public. Trophic state index (TSI) measures the quantities of a biologically limiting factor, phosphorous, present in water. This is one of those cases where less is more: lower numbers can be evidence of cleaner water. The higher the number, the more phosphorus is SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

present and the more likely algae will bloom beyond control. Algae, though seemingly unassuming to the untrained eye, can cause serious health problems. The blooms can take a disproportionate amount of oxygen from the lake when they die off and decompose, causing fish and other animals to leave the lake or die and, in rare instances, induce skin and respiratory problems in humans. Smith Mountain Lake, however, is far from toxic. There are three classes of trophic indices: oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophic (from best to worst). SML’s trophic index tends to rate in the mesotrophic category. According to the September 2011 issue of The Lake Monitor, “...the water closest to the dam can be classified predominantly as oligotrophic while waters up the channels are mainly eutrophic. This 48 March • April 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
KEEPING SML BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY Clear leaves away from the lake. Raking or blowing leaves into the lake depletes the water of oxygen and adds nutrients that help algae grow. With too little oxygen and too much algae, lake water quality declines. Consider composting your autumn leaves instead. Fertilize smart. Always choose lowphosphorous fertilizer and never fertilize your property in the spring when rains are more likely to wash residue into the lake. Create a buffer garden. A buffer garden is waterfront landscaping that utilizes trees, shrubs, perennials, non-turf grasses, and/or grass-like plants to act as a filter for runoff, catching sediment, debris and pollutants before they reach the water. Buffer gardens protect the shoreline from erosion and provide a place for wildlife to live and play. is typical of the differences between the more riverlike characteristics of the upper channels of Smith Mountain Lake and the lake-like characteristics of the main basin, which is closer to the dam.” The cleanest water lies in the deepest part of the lake because, Heck explained, sediments settle to the bottom, taking the phosphorous with it. The report also indicated that the TSI improved from 2010 to 2011 as did water clarity measures, bacteria populations and phosphorous levels, indicating the lake is getting healthier. Teresa Criner of Wainwright & Co. Realtors said she tries to give her clients a sense of these water 50 March • April 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
quality concepts when showing waterfront property. “Events like storms, floods and droughts can change how water looks now from when they first visited the property,” Criner said. “I also tell them that less-developed areas upstream tend to have more sediment.” Criner shows clients how water depth, for instance, is dependent on Mother Nature’s mood swings. “I have a method that’s rather primitive,” she said, “I take a rock tied to a string that has a knot at every foot and drop it into the lake,” she said, explaining that clients can visualize the water depth and see how it varies from property to property or from visit to visit. Another technique involves taking a clear glass to the lake and filling it with water for clients to inspect. Despite the difference in quality from place to place, Criner said Smith Mountain Lake’s water ranges from “good to very good to excellent. We’re blessed.” Smith added: “Smith Mountain Lake’s water quality is excellent. It’s not deteriorating. People ought to enjoy it. Smith Mountain Lake Association will keep monitoring the water quality and will be the first to blow the whistle [should it show signs of decline].”

low-cooked barbecue, homemade desserts and a warm, friendly welcome. It may not be exactly like a visit to grandma’s house, but Vicki Saunders hopes customers who visit her new restaurant at Celebration Square in Downtown Moneta will have a similarly comforting experience. She and husband Steve Saunders want every guest to feel right at home at the Smokehouse Restaurant. “The plate that I put in front of you when you come to my restaurant is the plate I would put in front of you if you were coming to eat at my house,” said Vicki Saunders. “I learned to cook from my grandmother. It’s not anything fancy, it’s just good home cooking.” Without a formal culinary education, Saunders doesn’t refer to herself as a chef. Instead, she’s fond of saying she graduated from the “School of Grandma.” “My green beans cook for about twelve hours, the way my grandmother cooked her green beans. If she

cooked it in an iron skillet, I cook it in an iron skillet. People are in such a hurry now; they don’t want to take the time to cook the old-fashioned way. Here, the things that we make, we spend the time to get them that way,” she said. Until last October, the Saunders’ were living their dream of giving the Smith Mountain Lake public traditional, home-cooked meals from their former restaurant, the Marina Café, which they leased at Mitchell’s Point Marina. When owners sold the marina, the couple thought they might have to give up on being restaurateurs.

savor | RESTAURANTS “It was a shock because they came in and told us they had sold the marina, and we didn’t even know it was for sale,” Vicki Saunders said. “We weren’t being given an option to stay, so suddenly we were faced with a decision of whether we were going to go somewhere else or whether we were just going to do catering. I cried for three days straight, then we started figuring things out.” A week later, Downtown Moneta developer George Aznavorian approached the Saunders about taking over space formerly occupied by Bluebird Bakery and Grill. The couple decided to transfer their restaurant expertise, entire staff and catering business (Barnyard Catering) to the new facility. The Smokehouse opened in December, serving the same food – with a few new additions – that was a hit at their former eatery. “So far, everybody loves the food,” said Vicki Saunders, noting that numerous customers have told
her they prefer the new location. “People say they’ll miss us being at Mitchell’s Point, but a lot of people like that it’s a closer drive to where they live. They were coming by boat before, but now they’re coming by car. We got very little road traffic before because of where we were.” The Smokehouse serves lunch and dinner items, a variety of coffees and teas as well as homemade desserts. There is also a full bar. The owners plan to increase the eatery’s summertime appeal with a patio dining area, live music and weekend breakfast. Saunders said no matter where they serve food, the goal is always the same. “We want this to be a place where everyone is friendly to you. It’s not going to be stuffy, and it’s going to be a pleasant experience with good food,” she said. “My main goal is to give you a welcoming, home-cooking experience.”
