Since Laker Magazine introduced its first wellness guide a year ago, the healthcare sector at Smith Mountain Lake has continued to grow, responding and adjusting to the ever-changing needs of area residents and tourists. To help readers better understand the healthcare landscape at SML, we’ve once again produced

Fit & Healthy, a special section that includes a variety of health-related stories, as well as a guide to area service providers. Each issue of Laker Magazine will continue to include local stories relating to health, fitness and nutrition. If you have ideas to share, please email editor@smithmountainlaker.com.

He was introduced to the practice as a young Marine stationed in Southeast Asia. “While I was deployed, I got to watch karate masters in a small Japanese town. It piqued my interest in martial arts, particularly Kung Fu. I pursued it more when I returned to America, and one of my teachers told me that to obtain the black belt, I needed to learn tai chi to soften up my techniques. I really enjoyed it because it helped me relax and enhanced my martial-arts technique. As I’ve aged, I have found it to be very therapeutic,â€? he said.

At the lake YMCA, Spencer has found other loyal tai chi enthusiasts such as Fred and Bev Waddell, who are class regulars. “I began practicing about 20 years ago or so,â€? said Bev Waddell. “I have a tendency to have high blood pressure and had read about tai chi’s ability to help you control it. Waddell said another great aspect of tai chi is it can be done anywhere and without expensive equipment. “You can do it on your deck, in a bedroom; there is no limit to location. I try to do a run-through at home at least once a day,â€? she said.

HAVE A

Holiday A G N O N

e look forward to the holiday season all year long, eager to celebrate with friends and family, attend social events and, of course, enjoy each delectable spreads of food. But too much indulgent eating in a short amount of time can have consequences that last long after the last Christmas cookie. Ida Proco, Nutrition Services Clinical Coordinator for Lynchburg’s Centra Health, offered some guidance to help curb the dangers of holiday eating.

BEWARE OF ADVERTISING

GET OUT YOUR CALENDAR

Balance holiday eating with more activity by altering your daily routine. Park farther away from an entrance, use the stairs, and plan shorter time frames for working out so you can squeeze them into busy schedules. Even 15 or 30 minutes of activity is effective. Find ways to increase your steps.

Look at the month ahead and all the holiday meals and parties. Record them in your calendar to be aware of overly tempting food days. Eat lightly at other meals to offset the calories and fat in the party food.

DON’T LOOK AT THE HOLIDAYS AS A “SEASON” Doing so causes you to justify more overeating more often. Think of having special treats and large meals only on the actual days you hold your celebration.

DON’T SKIP MEALS Skipping meals often leads to overeating and overcompensating later.

STAY ON TRACK Realize all of the food choices are not going to be the most healthy choices. Enjoy the moment, but then get right back on track.

Holiday commercials, ads and marketing aren’t QHFHVVDULO\ PRUH LQÁXHQWLDO DW WKH KROLGD\V WKDQ other times of the year, but some individuals may allow it to impact them more.

PLAN FOR EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY A common theme at the holidays is increased food intake and less time for exercise and activity. Schedule time each day to excercise to avoid weight gain.

WORK FOR IT

KNOW YOUR LIMITS Keep in mind it’s not one or two meals or even one or two days that cause weight gain. It’s usually constant overeating for an extended period of time. For more tips to keep your diet on track over the holidays, Proco recommends the article “Healthy Holiday Eating” by Kathleen M. Zelman. Read it online at webmd.com/diet/healthyholiday-eating-10/holiday-foods-diet. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM
