You may think summer
is a busy season at Smith Mountain Lake, but when it comes to events, autumn is definitely tops around here. The SML Wine Festival, Charity Home Tour and Antique Boat Show are just a few of the events that occur annually. At Laker Media, our challenge is to find new and interesting twists on these longtime lake favorites while also making readers aware of new events or smaller, more obscure ones they may want to attend. In this issue, I think we’ve accomplished that goal with several engaging features, interesting profiles, an expanded version of the events calendar and our exclusive guide to taking the SML Charity Home Tour by boat. You’ll also want to turn to page 26 to see and read about the winning entry in our 5th Lovely Laker Landscape Contest, sponsored by Lakescapes Nursery, and page 74 for a feature on how two buddies transformed a former schoolhouse into a lively sports pub. Laker Media team members already are busy working on the November/December issue. In it, we’ll publish a new guide to health and wellness at Smith Mountain Lake as well as our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For details on both, turn to page 35. I hope you enjoy an eventful fall!

In May, SML Rotary Club president Case Pieterman and wife Coby visited the Buddhist temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep near Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. The temple, which is at an elevation of 3,520 feet, dates back to 1383 and can be reached via a steep staircase of 290 steps. Case said the temple’s pagoda contains holy Buddha relics and attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. The Pietermans were in Thailand attending the 2012 Rotary International Convention.
Turks and Caicos George and Jennifer Chaconas of Moneta traveled in March to the Turks and Caicos Islands for a warm-weather getaway. The couple is holding the September/October 2011 issue of the Laker, for which they volunteered as cover models along with their labradoodle, Chloe. The Turks and Caicos are in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas, north of Hispaniola and about 620 miles from Miami.
Savannah Smith Mountain Lake residents (from left) Linda St. John, David St. John, Anne Legard, Frank Oakes and John Legard took the Laker in March to Savannah, Ga., for the city’s 188th St. Patrick’s Day parade. The event, which draws hundreds of thousands people, is part of a two-week celebration of Irish heritage in the historic city. The SML group is pictured at the Pirates’ House, a restaurant that dates back to 1753.
Charlottesville Vicki and Eddie Allman (first and fourth from left) of Hardy took a break from tailgating at a UVa football game last fall to have this photo snapped with the Cavalier mascot and his horse. Joining the Allmans were friends from Chesapeake, Chester, Nokesville, Powhatan, and Richmond. “We shared our Laker with everyone and they loved it,” Vicki said.
Vicksburg In May, Bonnie and Don Bull of Moneta cruised the Mississippi River from Memphis to New Orleans aboard the “American Queen,” a paddlewheel steamboat. Stops included Vicksburg (where they posed for this photo with the Laker) and Natchez, Miss., Helena, Ark., Oak Alley, St. Francisville and Baton Rouge, La. “We loved the steamboat and the shore excursion buses ... which offered ‘hop on, hop off’ stops at the various ports,” Don said. “The food was great, the room was very comfortable and the staff was friendly and attentive.”

Tennessee
The Dillard family of Union Hall took a year’s worth of Lakers with them on a trip in April to Great Smokey Mountains National Park where they posed for this photo with Clingmans Dome in the background. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Tennessee and the thrird highest mountain east of the Mississippi River (behind North Carolina’s Mount Mitchell and Mount Craig). Pictured from left are Christine, Elizabeth, Steven, Caroline, Elsie and Ralph Dillard.
Bahamas Noah and Adam Patterson of Penhook took time out from their April vacation to Atlantis Paradise Island, a resort in the Bahamas, to pose for this photo with the Laker in front of the Leap of Faith. The 60-foot waterslide with a Mayan Temple theme features a nearly vertical drop that propels riders through a clear acrylic tunnel submerged in a sharkfilled lagoon.
New Orleans In May, 40 friends and family members (including this group from SML) joined longtime lake residents Ralph and Barbara Brush in New Orleans for a three-day celebration of the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary. Ralph (holding magazine) and Barbara (in purple sweater) met in the city and lived there when first married. This photo was taken at the Houmas House Plantation and Gardens, an antebellum estate in nearby Darrow, La.
Key West John and Ann Yearick of Christiansburg and Smith Mountain Lake traveled in January for a winter getaway to Key West, Fla. The couple stopped for this photo with the Laker in front of the concrete marker painted to look like a buoy that claims the spot in Key West as the southernmost point in the continental United States.
St. Maarten Jenny, Hanna, Kayla and Bobby Hathaway of Powhatan paused for this photo with the Laker following a snorkeling trip off the coast of St. Maarten. The family members, who also enjoy vacations at SML, made a stop at the Caribbean island while on a spring break cruise in April. St. Maarten, which encompasses the southern half of the island, is a constituent country of the Netherlands, while the northern half, known as St. Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France.

HOME JOURNAL Our Top Spot The kitchen, which the homeowners described as an inviting space for guests to gather and socialize during meal preparation. Most Unexpected Element The water feature in the foyer. “We saw this in a restaurant and thought it was a good way to hide the view until you entered the room,” Peggy Morrison said. Couldn’t Live Without The whole-home audio system. “We enjoy music, and all our CDs are on a server, so we have easy access to a wide variety of music. We can listen on the dock too,” said George Morrison. Glad We Splurged On The whole-home generator, which came in handy after a major storm knocked out power for several days at the end of June. “We had electricity, ice, hot water,” Peggy said. “We lived [elsewhere] through two tornadoes and one hurricane. The cost of the food we have thrown out over the years could buy this generator.”

eorge and Peggy Morrison never paid much attention to Smith Mountain Lake when they were growing up less than three hours down the road in Abingdon. But in 1980, Peggy got her first post-college job in Bedford. The couple moved to Roanoke, purchased a secondhand boat and began to explore – and fall in love with – the lake. “We loved the serenity of the water, the beauty of the area, the friendly people and proximity to Roanoke and Virginia Tech,” Peggy said. “It was soon apparent that we planned to come back to the area when we retired.” Over the years, the Morrisons rented lakefront homes for one-, two-, then three-week vacations, and it was during one of those excursions that George took a photo of a home the couple admired. “It was just beautiful,” he said. “And I kept

that photo in my day planner where I could see it often. Owning a house on the lake became one of our goals. It was a dream.” George, a district human resources manager with UPS, and Peggy, a city planner and consultant, moved farther away from SML through the years – to Richmond, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Louisville – but continued to vacation here. Ultimately, they invested in a townhouse on the Blackwater at Lakestone, where, George noted, their yearly taxes were less than their monthly townhouse taxes in Pennsylvania. In 2000, the Morrisons purchased a waterfront lot and began working with an architect to design their dream home. In 2006, after two years of planning and 18 months of construction, the couple moved into their stunning, three-story Contentment Island home, which will be featured Oct. 5-7 on the SML Charity Home Tour. ooking for a fun way to spend a fall weekend on Smith Mountain Lake and support eight local charities? Then mark your calendar for Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 5-7) and make plans to attend the 2012 SML Charity Home Tour where visitors can get an inside look at eight distinctive lakefront homes and find design, decorating and landscaping inspiration. The fact that all eight Tour homes are accessible by boat is part of what makes SML’s event unique among similar tours across the country. Weather permitting — and Southwest Virginia is usually blessed with some gorgeous fall boating days in early October — traveling to some or all of the homes by water, especially with friends or family aboard, is a special treat.
The close proximity of this year’s Tour homes, coupled with lower gas prices, makes going by boat practical, too. Seven Tour stops are clustered along the shores of the lower Roanoke and Blackwater channels, and the eighth is reached via what is generally a trafficfree run up the Blackwater to B47. In addition, Tour planners have taken steps to arrange extra docking space at several of the homes to minimize instances where boaters have to wait for a place to tie up. All-in-all, some delightful fall cruise destinations await, so keep this guide for attending the Home Tour by boat handy. – Jerry Hale SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Clockwise from top left, a dining table seats four on the lakeside patio, which also includes an outdoor fireplace for chilly autumn nights; the mainlevel family room features a 20-foot wall of windows and two-story fireplace; a Victrola is one of several family antiques which decorate the lower-level master suite. 22 September • October 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
“It was our dream-come-true to live at the lake and to have a home that was the best of several houses we had lived in after five work-related relocations,” George said. “When you are relocated to a place not of your choosing, the house is a house and never feels like your home, because you lack the emotional investment knowing it was not going to be the area where you would settle down after retirement.” From the lake side, the Morrison home towers above the water with three stories of windows and stacked stonework columns. On the street side, a distinctive barrel-ceiling entryway welcomes visitors. Water flows down a stacked-stone wall in the two-story foyer, a harbinger of the relaxing water views guests will find in nearly every room of the open and accommodating home. A small glass wall between the great room and the dining room seems to expand both spaces. Custom-designed cherry cabinets, an expansive island, high-end appliances, tile backsplash and stone columns all contribute to the eye-popping kitchen. The master suite on the main floor allows one-level living and has a sitting room facing the double-sided fireplace from the great room.

The recreation room is designed for fun and features a pool table and abundant neon signs. The home’s high-tech features include a Lutron lighting system and whole-home audio system, a feature the couple said they couldn’t live without. The Morrisons said they got many ideas for their home while attending the SML Charity Home Tour several times. our years after beginning construction on their custom waterfront home on Smith Mountain Lake, Judy Smith began to get cold feet. She started creating excuses for why she couldn’t move from her home in Forest to the lake house. Perhaps the most unusual was that she could not leave behind four large trees she had grown from saplings. Her husband sprang into action, consulting with landscape architect Cabell Crowther, who suggested they move the trees to the new property in The Waterfront Country Club community. So, on a cold day in January 2005, five workers from a local
landscape company arrived in Forest with heavy equipment to unearth the trees, wrap the root balls in burlap, transport them to the lake and replant them. “It took five guys 5½ hours to dig up one tree and wrap the roots,” said Steve Smith. “The root ball was so heavy, the back of the front-end loader rose in the air. Five 200-pound guys had to stand on the back of the machine as counterbalance.” Those four trees, which would have cost far more to replace than to move, are key to the Smith’s garden design, which won this year’s Lovely Laker Landscape Contest. shorelines | LAKE & GARDEN RIGHT A twisty downspout is like an abstract sculpture, transforming function into form at the Smith home. Dwarf fountain grass ‘Hameln’ grows at its base. BELOW The serpentine stone retaining wall creates level garden space near the house and creates interest as the wall curves out of sight. The trees planted at the lake level frame the view and add a sense of depth from the house.
Now at least 25 feet tall, the coral bark Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’) is a focal point at the front entrance, adding year-round interest with its vivid coral-colored branches in winter, lime-green leaves in spring and summer and golden autumn foliage. The maroon hue of the ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple softens the opposite corner. A third Japanese maple provides shade to the exercise spa while the relocated lace leaf maple graces a corner in the side garden. Moving the specimen trees was just one of the many house design and landscape hurdles. Although the property has 550 feet of shoreline, the lot is long and skinny, presenting challenges to both architect Danny Goins and landscape architect Crowther. Each had to figure out how to fit the house and garden onto the lot, adhering to the Franklin

County and Shoreline Management Plan setback codes, while still providing ample living space. Both designers rose to the challenge. “The house literally could not have been an inch bigger,” said Judy. “There are all sorts of odd angles to accommodate the lot, and the entire house is pointed toward the Peaks of Otter view.” The garden is terraced to create level areas. The stone retaining walls have serpentine curves to reduce the impression of their height and length, also adding a delightful sense of mystery because the curves obscure the view from one end to the other. In a garden of this size, it would have been an easy pitfall to fill it with hundreds of different plant varieties. Instead, the Smiths realized the importance of making a large statement with swaths and ribbons of one plant. Groves of Heritage river birch flank the driveway. The ornamental grass Miscanthus sinensis follows the arch of the sandy beach. Largeleaf hydrangea soften the house foundations on the shady side, while a mass planting of the sun-loving Annabelle hydrangeas fill a sunny spot. Judy’s latest idea is a layered row of hydrangeas combining the long-flowering, 8-foot tall ‘Limelight’ behind ‘Little Lime,’ a new dwarf introduction that tops at 5 feet.

shorelines | LAKE & GARDEN Judy chose her shrubs for their suitability to the lake environs and their diverse seasonal interest: rhododendrons in spring, St. John’s wort for early summer, different types of hydrangeas, Knock Out roses for long summer interest, and evergreens such as ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ gardenia and the compact ‘Soft Touch’ holly. Carefully positioned trees provide needed shade at different times of year. Deeply involved with the care of the garden, Judy walks the property daily, noticing which plants need a little feeding, a little pruning, a bit more water, giving the care as needed.
BELOW From left, the evergreen Gardenia jasminoides ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ is another favorite plant in the Smith garden because it has fragrant flowers from spring until frost; the chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) reminds Judy of the movie “Out of Africa,” while ‘Little Lime’ hydrangeas provide later summer interest. When mature, the newly planted ‘Limelight‘ hydrangeas will provide another shrub layer behind the ‘Little Limes’.
Judy Smith’s 13 Favorite Plants Coral bark maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’): I love the 4-season interest: coral branches in winter, lime green leaves in spring and summer and golden fall foliage. Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’: It has huge, spectacular blooms that change from white to apple green. It’s great for dried flowers, and since it blooms on new wood, I can cut it back in winter. ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ gardenia: They are evergreen all year, and have white, fragrant blooms from spring until frost. ‘Natchez’ crape myrtle: They have a classic look in the landscape and provide late summer to fall blooms. They can be pruned, but do not lop off the tops of the branches. That kind of pruning ruins the shape of the tree. American yellowwood tree (Cladrastis kentukea, aka C. lutea): A Virginia native, it has beautiful branch structure and white wisteria-like blooms in the late spring. Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus): I love the shape of this tree, which reminds me of [the movie] “Out of Africa,” and the spiky lavender blooms from spring to early summer.
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yoshino’: This is the most beautiful evergreen I have ever seen. Viburnum plicatum tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’: An upright viburnum with layers of white blooms in the spring that last for many weeks, the deer will not eat this shrub. Viburnum ‘Shasta’ is another favorite that is more horizontal in habit than ‘Summer Snowflake.’ Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Alice’ (oakleaf hydrangea): When planted en masse, it’s absolutely stunning. The cone-shaped white blooms are 12 inches long in spring, and it has beautiful fall foliage. Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum): A deciduous conifer that is absolutely beautiful in all seasons. Bloodgood’ Japanese maple: I love its branch structure and the beautiful leaf shape and color. Dwarf maiden grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’): This grass is gorgeous in all seasons and grows to only 3-4 feet. Sedum ‘Vera Jameson’: A ground cover sedum that blooms purple-pink in late summer. “I have a feel for plants and their watering and feeding needs,” she said. “You just have to be observant and look at them. When we started, we also had our soil tested, which helped me to learn what was needed.” When she does fertilize, Judy said she is careful to use the minimum required to meet the plants’ needs without causing leaching into the lake. “Too little fertilizer is better than too much,” she advised. Now happily settled in their home, Judy laughed when recalling her qualms about the move. In addition to her passion for the garden, both Steve and Judy are actively involved in the lake community. Judy is a member of both the Moneta and Smith Mountain Lake garden clubs and volunteers at the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center in Rocky Mount. In her spare time, she draws and works in pastels. Steve is an avid golfer and an accomplished duplicate bridge player. f grape vines could speak, the vibrant green rows at Hickory Hill Vineyards & Winery in Moneta would have many stories to tell. They could recall how the operation began in 1992 as five acres planted on land boasting a fascinating history that pre-dates Smith Mountain Lake itself. They might share how the vineyard later became the 75th commercial winery in Virginia or how the circa-1923 farmhouse was restored into a charming tasting room. They might proudly tell of the many awards Hickory Hill’s wines have earned over the years. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Mostly, the vines would likely describe the careful cultivation and diligent involvement of owners Roger and Judy Furrow, whose passion for the land and business has been passed on to daughter Wendy Furrow-Scott and her husband, Donald Scott. Earlier this year, Hickory Hill’s vines reached their 20-year mark and Roger and Judy celebrated 50 years of marriage. Both milestones are rooted in steadfast dedication.
The Early Years
“When I was in the Air Force, I was once assigned additional duty of inventorying the Officer’s Club,” Roger Furrow said. “As a country boy from Franklin County who grew up in a family that never drank

wine, I was fascinated by all the exotic French and Italian wine names in the wine collection. When I told Judy, we decided to start trying a few wines, and we loved it. Soon, we were making homemade wine from everything available.” The couple was invited to experiment with a few vines on land in the Hickory Cove area of SML owned by Roger’s father, who helped build the Smith Mountain Dam. The Furrows made trips from their North Carolina home to his parents’ cabin almost every weekend to cultivate the grapes. They also made time to participate in winemaking seminars sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Department of Agriculture. “Judy and I started looking for a farm where we could plant a commercial vineyard,” Furrow said. “We bought the old Tobe Scruggs farm that is now Hickory Hill in 1992 and planted the first blocks of grapes that year. We sold our grapes to another winery the first six to seven years, but then I retired from my real job and we opened the winery in 2001.” Judy Furrow said they could not have made the operation a success without help from the lake community, particularly when Judy battled cancer in 2005. “The Smith Mountain Lake community has been supportive from day one,” she said. “More importantly, the community continues to support us by bringing their guests to visit us and buying our product in the local stores. Also, much of the work here at the vineyard and winery is done by volunteers who help us with festivals, bottling and harvesting the grapes.”

Wendy Furrow-Scott and brother Tad were entering adulthood by the time their parents established Hickory Hill. Still, both the SML area and their parents’ winery dream were a large part of their lives. “I have so many fond memories of growing up around the lake,” said Furrow-Scott. “[Water] skiing, swimming, fishing, boating. About the time I finished high school, Mom and Dad planted the experimental vineyard on the lake in Hickory Cove on my grandparents’ property. By the time that vineyard started producing, I was in college and not visiting the lake property as much. In some ways, I wish I had grown up on a farm. I guess that is one of the reasons my husband and I chose to leave our [information technology] jobs, move our family here and raise our daughter [8-year-old Tura] on the farm I never had.” Furrow-Scott and her husband began living and working at the winery full time about seven years ago. She said what they gave up in income from fast-paced corporate jobs has been far surpassed by the quality of life they enjoy at Hickory Hill.

“Donald and I do most of the day-to-day work now,” she said. “Donald loves and lives in the vineyard foremost. He is in charge of bottling, and also does all the wholesale selling and stocking of local stores and restaurants. He is in charge of all the festivals, remotes, distributor compliance and required monthly reporting. “I do the bookkeeping, website and marketing and I’m in charge of the Sunset Saturdays summer music series, as well as the special private tastings, painting parties, chocolate parings and vertical tastings we do over the year.” Furrow-Scott described her dad as “Mr. Fix-It,” overseeing operations and mentoring the younger couple on winery ownership. She said her mom enjoys handling merchandise display in the gift shop and at events. Each family member contributes strengths when it comes to the bottling process. “When we are getting wines ready to bottle, we will all sit down and taste the wines,” said FurrowScott. “Mom has the best nose and I am a pretty close second. Dad and Tad have great palates, and Donald has developed a very good palate.”
Lake Ambassadors
The family members agreed that meeting interesting people from all over the world in the tasting room is a perk of winery ownership. However, overcoming cultural differences has been difficult at times. “One of the hardest things I’ve had to do while working in our tasting room was to explain to a couple from Denmark, who spoke and understood very little English, that I could not serve their three teenage children a taste of wine because the law did not allow me to serve people under 21 years of age,” Judy recalled.

LEFT A rack in the gift shop displays the nine varieties of wine produced at Hickory Hill.
There have also been many funny stories through the years – like the time Roger chased a loose water drum rolling down a hill into the lake. Sharing a bit of their personal lives, knowledge of wine and fondness for the lake area with guests is a part of everyday life at Hickory Hill. “I would like to think we provide people who visit with the opportunity to better understand wine, how it is made, how wine can add to the enjoyment of a meal,” said Judy Furrow. “I would like to think that the people leave SML having had an enjoyable experience and will make them not only want to return to our winery, but to the community as well. If this is done, then we have contributed to the economics and good will of all of us who live here at Smith Mountain Lake.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Vision Patriotism, craftsmanship and style: The pre-World War II Chris-Craft line of recreational boats is a tribute to these American values and has become the fascination of antique watercraft hobbyists across the country.
L
ocal boating enthusiast Mike Mutchler cruises Smith Mountain Lake in his 1926 Chris-Craft triple cockpit, taking pride in the rich history the boat represents. “Flapper” will be the featured vessel when the SML chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society hold its 22nd annual show and festival Sept. 15 at Mariners Landing in Huddleston. “I’ve always admired antique boats,” said Mutchler, a retired General Motors vice president and engineer from Detroit who once lived not far from Algonac, Mich., where the original Chris-Craft plant was located. “To me, they’re an expression of American craftsmanship because the wooden-boat concept, especially the runabout concept, was invented here in the United States.” Mutchler’s attraction to antique boats, along with his expanding collection, played a key role in his decision to move to SML 12 years ago with his wife, Dolores. “When I retired, we were looking for a lake that did not freeze and a lake where I could build a boathouse for the boats,” said Mutchler, explaining that doing so helps protect vessels from sun exposure and water damage. “One of the attractions antique and classic boat lovers have to Smith Mountain Lake, I think, is the lake itself,” he said. “It is very user-friendly. It’s very easy to keep a boat here on the lake, one of the few places you can build a boathouse to house and protect your boat.” Mutchler owns four antique boats, but “Flapper” is the showpiece. “It is the oldest and largest boat I own,” he said. “It was a complete basket case when I found it. It had to be redone from the keel all the way up over three years’ time at a professional woodworking shop in Michigan. The engine has been rebuilt twice.” Mutchler said “Flapper” was originally used for demonstration and testing at the Kermath Engineering Company, which was working to expand horsepower in its engines. “I’m assuming Kermath used it until close to 1930 and then sold it to some private individual in Michigan. The owner previous to me found it in a barnyard in Michigan. Someone had run it into a rock, broken the keel and abandoned it where it sat for many years,” said Mutchler. “He and I were neighbors in Michigan. He was a large-scale classic SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

LEFT Mike Mutchler takes wife Dolores for a ride on SML aboard “Flapper,” the couple’s 1926 ChrisCraft runabout. BELOW The boat’s Kermath engine weighs 1,300 pounds and dates back to the late 1920s.
boat collector and realized he wouldn’t get around to restoring ‘Flapper,’ so he sold it to me.” In its restored condition, “Flapper” is a vintage vision with a gleaming wooden body stretching 26 feet in length and housing a 1,300-pound, 69-inch Kermath engine from the late 1920s. Mutchler enters his vessels in boat shows, mostly those local to Smith Mountain Lake and his part-time Florida residence, cruises SML in them with his wife, children and grandchildren, and keeps a careful maintenance regimen. For Mutchler, each aspect of owning antique boats is equally enjoyable. “I usually like to run each boat at least once a week. When I get back, I chamois the whole thing off so it doesn’t get water spotted. I check the engine, check the oil, then cover it back up so the sun doesn’t deteriorate the mahogany finish,” he said. Dolores Mutchler said she doesn’t mind her husband’s attachment to the boats, “Flapper” in particular. “It’s his life,” she said. “Ever since he quit work he’s been working on that boat. He enjoys it and as long as he’s healthy enough for it, I don’t mind. I have my sewing and he has his boats.” Mutchler said he looks forward to displaying “Flapper” at SML’s show and festival, one of the most anticipated annual events at the lake. “’Flapper' is being featured because it is one of the oldest boats on the lake,” said Mutchler. “It is the only one around with an old Kermath engine in it, which is a rare find.”
The Mutchlers, along with their three daughters, named the boat "Flapper" after deciding its moniker should be synonymous with the 1920s.
The Mutchlers enjoy adding to the historic emphasis of shows by dressing in 1920s costume. Dolores said she decides whether to wear her oldfashioned bathing suit or a long skirt with pantaloons and parasol based on the weather. “We wear the costumes to fit with the time frame of the boats. The women of these early eras wouldn’t have been wearing modern clothes; they would have been wearing long dresses, jewels and pantaloons,” she said. The popularity of the SML show demonstrates the area’s strong representation of antique and classic boat enthusiasts, which Mutchler said he’s confident will continue to grow. “The antique and classic boat interest here is becoming quite popular. I expect the club, which has about 74 members now, will get bigger,” he said. “Similar clubs in other areas of the country have combined shows with one another and with antique automobile clubs as well. We might start to see that sort of thing develop here too someday.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

hat do you get when you try to come up with a boat name that reflects both a passionate Greek heritage and the southern charm of a lake in Southwest Virginia? Tom Gerakaris and father Gus found out as they contemplated the proper moniker for their 2006 24-foot Maxum. “‘Y’all Greek to Me’ seemed like the appropriate combination,” Tom Gerakaris said. “And because of it, we’ve gotten to say ‘ti kanis’ [Greek for ‘How are you doing?’] to fellow Greeks who have noticed the name on the sides of our boat.” As further testament to the family’s heritage, Greek letters also spell out ‘Gerakaris’ on the boat’s transom.

Gus (left) and Tom Gerakaris aboard their 24-foot Maxum boat, which the family uses for a variety of on-water adventures.
“We credit Dad for our lake life,” said Tom Gerakaris, whose family’s history with the lake began more than 20 years ago. “He discovered this paradise when a friend suggested having a look at a great destination for fishing.” Father and son have both seen proof that SML is a productive fishery. They regularly use their 20-
foot Grady White outboard to fish for striped bass. In May, Tom caught the largest striper ever entered in the 44-year history of SML’s annual Optimist Club tournament. The 42.88-pound fish will soon grace the spot above the mantle in the home Tom shares with his wife, Dawn, in Sleepy Hollow, a waterfront community on Gills Creek. His dad lives next door. “We try to spend as much time as we can here yearround,” Dawn said. “We used to drive 13 hours from Florida with young children just to enjoy Gus’ place on the lake. Now we’re fortunate to have a lake house right next door.” The Gerakaris clan’s favorite boating outings include runs toward the dam to “get wet in some of the lake’s clearest water,” Dawn said. “We have lots of friends and family visit, and they always enjoy seeing that part of the lake. Our grandchildren [there are five ranging in age from 10 months to 15 years old] especially like swimming there.” Gus’ pre-retirement work in construction produced a friendship with local contractor Lynn Swain, who helps operate Portside Grill & Bar at Virginia Dare Marina. Gus said he enjoys taking the boat to Portside to enjoy the over-the-water restaurant’s festive atmosphere, good food and beverages. “It’s not Greek food, but it’s a good place anyway,” he said with a laugh.

L
ooking for a fun way to spend a fall weekend on Smith Mountain Lake and support eight local charities?

Tips
for taking the
tour
Before setting out, mark your route on a copy of the larger, more detailed Laker Map, available in racks around the region as well as at the offices of Laker Media (Westlake Professional Park, behind Kroger).
If heading downstream (toward the dam), odd-numbered (green) channel markers will be on your right (starboard) side and even-numbered (red) will be on the left (port). Lower-numbered markers are nearer to the dam. Marker numbers indicate channel sequence, not distance to the dam or to one another. It is prudent to stay well clear of all markers, especially when water levels are low. Stay toward the right side of the river channels. Check the weather and your fuel status before departing. Sportsman’s Marina at R11 and Gills Creek Marina at G2 (last gas on upper Blackwater) are both official Tour rest stops. Take along your fully-charged mobile phone and keep handy the phone number for Sea Tow (540-719-5555) if assistance is needed. The company is offering discounted memberships in advance and 20 percent off services for nonmember Tour participants. When docking, look for large orange balloons. Helpers will be available on at least one dock near each home. Do not use any dock that does not have docking volunteers assisting.
Visitors gather on the docks at the Lilly home (page 71).
If you plan to take the Tour by land, visit smlcharityhometour.com to find driving directions and a printable brochure that includes official rest stops. The site also has information on the event’s history, a list of advance ticket outlets and more.

4 Southall Home #4 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37.058068N, 79.61538W
The Southall home was purchased after one of the owners discovered SML while attending the 2010 Charity Home Tour. “It was love at first sight,” said Betty Southall. “Everything about this area — the mountains, the lake, the natural beauty and, of course, the gorgeous homes — said, ‘This is the place I want to live.’” Now in residence for about a year, the current owner is enjoying the convenience of the main-level master suite with cove lighting and spacious closet. The living room’s doublesided fireplace also opens to a family room near the kitchen. The lower level features several guest bedrooms and a family room with bar. It is also where visitors will find three mounted bears — one large brown bear and two smaller black bears — all husband Larry’s trophies from two Alaskan hunting trips. By Boat: Proceed downstream on the main channel, turn right and into the first cove past R11A. Pass through the no-wake buoys, to fifth dock on the left. Look for orange balloon and workers on the dock. Note: Use caution when climbing the steps to this house as they are steep and have no handrails.

3 Simmers Home #3 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37.061259N, 79.609294W
The Simmers’ home introduces visitors to Carrs Point, located between the communities of Compass Cove and Bernard’s Landing. Because the home is situated on a peninsula, both the front and back have lake views, the most magnificent ones being from the living room, family room and eat-in kitchen, which face Smith Mountain. Open, yet with room definition, the interior includes customstyled elements – built-ins around the living room fireplace, niches, kitchen and family room cabinets and a light lift in the entrance foyer. The master suite, running the width of the home, has a lake view from both front and back. A large upper level includes a family room and four themed guest rooms. The owner has decorated the home with artful touches and accessories.

Gray Home #1 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37.063423N, 79.591680W
Located in The Reach, the Gray home has Nantucket-style exterior shakes and an inviting wrap-around porch. Situated on a peninsula, the home has water views from nearly every room. High ceilings and tall windows with transoms make the spacious main floor extra bright. The owners, who purchased the home in 2006, have updated the bathrooms and kitchen. They also converted the master bedroom into a large family room with fireplace and entrance to a patio with fire pit. The new master suite is on the upper level along with two guest bedrooms and a dormitory with captains’ beds. The remodeled home better accommodates this large family, with a kitchen banquette eating area featuring a split table to ease access to the bench seating, and an extra sleeping area provided by a Murphy bed that disappears into the study’s bookcases. By Boat: Return to the main channel and cross to the opposite side of the Roanoke River, angling slightly to starboard as you go. Look for the cove with gray condos (The Waterways) at the far end. Keep to the right of the small island as you enter this cove, and stay to the right side of the cove to the second dock on the right. Additional docking may be available around the point on the front side of the Gray home. Follow the instructions of workers on the dock. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

2 Ervin Home #2 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37.050088N, 79.627815W
The Ervin home in Southwind Key sits on a flat point lot with a 270-degree view of the lake that includes Christmas Tree Island and Smith Mountain. The large yard near the lake makes a perfect site for football, soccer and yard games among children and grandchildren. The main-level open floor plan accommodates guests easily but also provides one-level living with the master suite nearby. Upstairs are four guest bedrooms, each with a lake view, and a dormitory that can accommodate eight children. A large upstairs family room with stacked stone fireplace matching the one on the main level adjoins a kitchenette and eating area and flows to a large deck. The home’s lot has 500 feet of shoreline, which includes a protected beach that looks out to a small island. By Boat: Backtrack to the main channel of the Blackwater River and head upriver, angling left toward B8. Christmas Tree Island will be on your left as you pass to the left of B6, B8 and B8A. Continue upstream, keeping to the right side of the river. Keep left of the small island before the cove at B10, staying clear of the island. DO NOT pass between this island and the land due to very shallow water at all times. Look for the first dock on the right after rounding this small island. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

7 Morrison Home #7 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE 37.04654N, 79.650844W
The Morrison home in Contentment Island is a threestory, custom-designed beauty with an exterior of fiber cement, dry stack stone and large windows. The main level’s twostory family room has a vaulted ceiling, wide lake view and towering double-sided stacked stone fireplace that opens to the study. The formal dining room, with tray ceiling and iron chandelier, also overlooks the lake. The entryway features an eye-catching stone wall with water flowing down it. Upstairs, the guest bedrooms share a sitting area with wet bar and deck access. The home also includes interesting antiques, including a sewing machine, cameras, a Victrola, radio and vintage photos. The lower-level family room has a large bar with fridge, ice maker, microwave and dishwasher. In the game room, the pool table takes center stage, surrounded by neon signs. The media room with projection screen and stepdown floor has theater seating, and is decorated to look like a movie theater. By Boat: Return to the main channel of the Blackwater River and turn right to head upstream. Stay to the left of 10A (located at small island) and proceed to the opposite side of the river. Pass to the right of the shoal marker

5 Lilly Home #5 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37.044485N, 79.681026W
The Lilly home has a Caribbean feel with tropical blue exterior siding and contrasting white trim. The home, built in 1972 and remodeled by the previous owner, was remodeled again by the Lillys to provide their own decorating flair. The couple added windows, doors, a deck on the main level and made interior changes to give the house an airy feel. Deitz Lilly is a builder and wife Terri is the artsy decorator who pumped life into the house. The home has a coastal feel with wood floors finished with a pickled white-wash, tropical fabrics and abundant island-themed decorative accents. The master bath is stunning with two vessel sinks and stone backsplashes. The Lillys replaced the former dock with two new ones – one for watercraft and one for entertaining, complete with a bar and multiple seating areas. By Boat: Return to the Blackwater River and turn left to head upriver. The river makes a sharp left turn at B19 and a sharp right turn at B22. Turn right into the second cove on the right beyond B24. Look for the first and second docks on the right and follow the instructions of dock workers. Note: Use caution when climbing the steps to this house as there are no handrails.

6 Nash Home
#6 on MAp and Home Tour brochure GPS: 37.052818N, 79.731804W
In Admiral’s Landing, the Nash home peers out over the Blackwater Channel from its tamed woodland setting. The three-level log home combines the rustic look of stone, wood doors and trim with traditional drywall. The main-level great room sparkles with its two-story windows opening to the lake, large stone fireplace and lograiled staircase. An antique canoe hangs on the upper floor railing. Downstairs is another family
room with fireplace and bar and a hot tub outside. A dining porch is located conveniently off the kitchen, and an additional porch is just off the master suite. There are several antiques to note — furniture pieces, butter churn, decorative garden tools, quilts, fishing poles, family photos, kitchen containers — some of which were passed down through the family and others that were purchased to fit the rustic home.
By Boat: Enjoy a pleasant 15-20 minute cruise on the upper Blackwater. Head right out of the Lilly’s cove and proceed upstream past B26, following the markers. The river makes a sharp left at B31A and a 180-degree right at B34. Continue on well past the 4-H Center. Look for the Admiral’s Landing community dock on the left, which is the seventh dock on the left after B45. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The remodeled bar area at Ole School Sports Pub and Grill, sectioned off from the main dining room, offers a number of games and televisions.
isten up, class! What do you get when you combine history, sports, beer and burgers? The answer is Ole School Sports Pub and Grill, one of the lake area’s newest restaurants. Originally established in 1931 as Dudley School, the building housed Dudley Mart & Restaurant for years before pals Corey Hansen and Chuck Hiltz took over in the spring, rebranding the convenience store and eatery at the intersection of Lovely Valley and Burnt Chimney roads in Wirtz. Hansen said the new venture started with a mutual love of chicken wings. “Chuck and I and some other friends started a group called Wing Nuts. We’re a group that loves wings and discovered that this place, when it was the Dudley Mart, had the best wings anywhere. So every Tuesday night for about a year we would come here for wings. Then we heard it was for sale, and Chuck and I talked about buying it and started to scheme what we would do with it.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Before opening, the pair gave the interior a fresh look, remodeling to create a rustic, pub-style atmosphere with exposed brick, classic red diner booths and dark wood in the main dining area, which seats 60. “The perception of this place before we bought it was that it was not family-friendly, and we’re trying hard to change that,” said Hansen, a father of young twins who also owns Perfect Blends, a café and coffee shop at Westlake Corner. “We want families to feel comfortable bringing kids with them.” Part of the plan includes projecting old black-and-
white films (with the sound turned off) on a large white wall in the dining area. Later in the evening, the projector is used to show sporting events. However, those who crave more sports can always head to the pub, which is partitioned off in the back. It includes nine televisions, foosball table and darts. The pub, which has 12 beers on tap, including rotating craft varieties, offers drink specials Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. Ole School has quickly become a popular hangout for locals, including Wirtz resident Mark Banks, who said he enjoys stopping by for a cold drink and good conversation. “I noticed the place when it was undergoing its transition,” said Banks. “I like being here; it’s nice to have something like this close by. The staff is great and I love coming to the bar after work.” Ole School’s American grill-themed menu features specialty burgers such as the Pizza Burger, Bacon Bacon Bacon Burger and the Bacon Banana Burger – all stacked with the distinctive ingredients their names suggest. Hungry customers also can feast on sandwiches, salads and homestyle chicken, steak and seafood entrees. Weekend breakfast hours mean patrons can get their fill of traditional breakfast items, including extra-large pancakes. 78 September • October 2012 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
Naturally, the menu also includes wings. “Our wings are huge; they’re like the biggest wings I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Hansen. “We offer a variety of wings sauces all created by and named after [members of] our staff, which is how we separate ourselves from other places.” Hansen and Hiltz also held on to two Dudley Mart traditions – the Friday night Walleye fish fry and Saturday night Prime Rib special. Also popular is the outdoor activities area for live music by local bands on the weekends, Wednesday night corn hole and Thursday night horseshoe tournaments.

T
he SML Wine Festival is the largest event of its type in Southwest Virginia, and while it provides an outstanding opportunity for wineries to promote and sell their wines to a large number of people, there’s also much time, effort and cost that goes into participating. This year’s event is slated for Sept. 29-30 at LakeWatch Plantation in Moneta. David Sawyer, owner of Fincastle Winery & Vineyards, said he’ll arrive a day in advance to set up his operation. Sawyer pitches a tent, places tables and hangs banners displaying the winery logo. Vessels filled with ice are needed to keep the white wine (and red if it is a hot day) cool. Corkscrews and price lists with descriptions of wine are needed as well as point-of-sale equipment for credit card transactions. (Most vendors now rely on wireless technology.)
“The folks running the festival really step up to the plate as far as taking care of the vendors,” Sawyer said. “And if it rains, they are out there putting out hay so the grounds don’t get muddy.” Wineries bring in a stock of wine in hopes of selling it all – but without running out too soon, which can result in frustrated customers. Sawyer said he factors in the previous year’s sales and the weather forecast when calculating how much wine to bring. Last year, it was toasty hot on Saturday but rained on Sunday. Sawyer said patron tastes sometimes vary depending on the day. Often, the Saturday crowd is younger with a proclivity for lighter and sweeter wines. Sunday tasters tend to be older and more experienced, ones who appreciate a more serious wine such as Cabernet Franc, he said. In addition to the wine, there are other costs involved in participating in the festival. Sawyer uses SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

savor | SPIRITS volunteers to help pour wine, but larger operations often bring paid employees. The wineries are required to obtain permits from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to ensure wine is served in a controlled environment. Wineries also pay a fee to participate in the event, although they are reimbursed for the wine given out as samples. Russ Amrhein, owner of AmRhein’s Wine Cellars near Roanoke, said he begins the festival preparation process by analyzing the type of customers he expects to see. He noted that younger wine tasters prefer products such as Ruby (a raspberry chocolate wine), Vin de Peche (a peach wine) and Traminette (a hybrid variety made in a sweet style with crisp acidity). More serious wine drinkers prefer his Petite Verdot, a substantial, dry red wine made from a variety that originated in Bordeaux, France, he said. Amrhein said he then narrows the wine he plans to take down to no more than 10 selections (out of the 21 types the winery produces). A call to the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event, reveals how many tickets are pre-sold so he can estimate the amount of wine to take. “For every case of wine that we sample out, we like to see $1,000 in sales,” said Amrhein, whose final task is to complete a detailed checklist of necessities to pack such as tables, chairs and tablecloths. So why do wineries go through all of the effort to participate in festivals? “It’s all about making contact for future sales,” said H.T. Page, co-owner of Brooks Mill Winery in Wirtz. While Brooks Mill is only about a 10-minute drive from the SML festival site, it’s a bit off the beaten path. “Some people tend to taste more and buy less,” said Page, whose wines are made from a variety of fruit, including blackberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, apples and cherries.

Virginia law requires all wine be sold to retailers by a distributor. Geoff Garcia, who manages SavoyLee Winery in Huddleston, said the company is in the process of obtaining a distribution license so he can expand his sales beyond the winery’s tasting room and festivals. “Festivals are a substantial portion of our income,” he said.
