Moneta Garden Club members helped serve guests at the 2012 Fashion Show and Luncheon.
Moneta Garden Club event to feature Paris-style fashions The Moneta Garden Club’s annual Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held March 6 at noon. The theme is Paris in Springtime. This year’s event will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 13586 Old Moneta Road in Moneta (across from the Moneta/SML Library). Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Guests will be served punch when they arrive. Club members, who will be modeling fashions from Talbots in Lynchburg, are
Sharon Jones, Rosemary Drennen, Anna Piatt, Carolyn Fink, Janis Hagen, Lori Hurt, Linda Bosiger and Linda McDonnell. The event is open to the public, and tickets are $20. Proceeds will be used for the club’s annual scholarship program. Each year, the club awards a scholarship to a graduating high school student. The award is based on financial need and academic achievement, with preference given to a student
who has chosen to follow a horticulture-related major area of study in college. A scholarship also is awarded to a middle school student to attend Nature Camp. For more information about the fashion show, call Marty Bowers at 297-0965. For information about membership in the club, call Joan Seifred at 719-2449.
Larry Jackson (left), manager of external affairs for Appalachian Power, presents a $25,000 check to Jeanne Fischer, president of Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park as Brian Heft, park manager, looks on. Members of the Friends group gathered in the Park Discovery Center to help celebrate the presentation of the grant, whose money will go toward the purchase of a 25-passenger pontoon boat that will be used for interpretive tours of the lake for park visitors. The Friends have been using an 11-passenger boat for tours, but because of the popularity of the program, a bigger one is needed. The estimated cost of the boat is $50,000.

Buffer Landscape team collaborates with local landscapers
Melissa Hodgkinson of Fiddlehead Landscape and Garden Design in Roanoke; David Bower, Ken Henry, John Webb and Jay Reed of Seven Oaks Landscape in Glade Hill; Tim Tingler of Lakescapes Nursery in Union Hall; and Brad Moles of Willow Tree Nursery in Penhook met with SMLA members Jim and Denise Pilversack; Dick LeRoy; Jim Zink; Susan Cranson; and Meg and Rich Brager.
Don’t roll the dice!
The Buffer Landscape Advisory Service Team, which is sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Association, met Feb. 4 with several local landscapers and designers, who provided input on ways to assist property owners with buffer landscaping. BLAST members visited with 18 property owners in 2012 to advise on ways to create buffer landscaping, which helps protect and preserve the lake, and solve runoff or erosion issues. The team rewarded five property owners with certificates of appreciation for

The condition of Neptune, a 10-year-old saddlebred gelding with a club foot who was Lulu’s pasture mate, is improving, according to Patricia Muncy, president of Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue.
Starving horse put down Lulu, a spotted Appaloosa whose story in the Feb. 1 edition of Laker Weekly told about the horse’s struggle to survive after coming to Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue, was euthanized last week. Patricia Muncy, president of RVHR, said the horse had shown some signs of improvement since her arrival at the Hardy facility on Jan. 23. At that time, she was barely able to stand, Muncy said. “[Lulu] was just unable to overcome the difficulties of extreme starvation, despite the heroic efforts of our staff, volunteers and our veterinarian,

Dr. Christopher Sumner with Large Animal Vet Service Rocky Mount,” Muncy wrote in an email. “We sincerely thank everyone who donated supplies, money, lent moral and prayerful support and visited Lulu.” Muncy said Neptune, a horse rescued at the same time as Lulu, is doing fine and putting on weight. Laney and Esel, two horses abandoned in Botetourt County, are the latest rescues in need of help, she added. Habitat, Christmas in Action groups merge Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in Action, two groups that have served the Bedford County community by providing housing for those in need, have merged in an attempt to better meet the area’s housing needs. While the objective of both groups is to provide adequate housing, Habitat is focused on families living in less-than-ideal circumstances. Christmas in Action has focused on current homeowners who cannot afford to make repairs on their houses. Under the new structure, CIA becomes the Critical Home Repair division of Habitat. According to Jim VanWinkle, interim president of Habitat, and Gardner Simpkins, former president of CIA, the merger will combine the strengths of the two organizations. “We felt that there was duplication in many of our efforts. The synergies of the combination will allow us to better focus our attention on our mission,” said Simpkins. “We need people with skills in the following areas: project management, materials management, purchasing, financial and strategic planning, accounting, and the like. Face it: We are a small business with the needs of any successful small business,” he added. The organization also needs volunteers who have skills in
the building trades or who are novices but know how to wield a hammer or a paintbrush. Part of the impetus for the merger is the move on the Habitat national level to take on the task of critical home repair. Habitat has constructed 14 new homes since its inception; Christmas in Action has made improvements to 270 houses. This year’s goals include building one new house and repairing 12. The target for repairs include doing six on the last Saturday in April as has been the CIA tradition and completing six others during the year. Because the average cost of a repair is about $5,000, the group is trying to raise $60,000 to meet this year’s needs. Donations are taxdeductible. The new board of directors wants to broaden its scope to include all areas of Bedford County, but to do so requires property on which to build. Land donated to the organization is tax-deductible at fair market value. For more information, call 5870280. Mail donations to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 171, Bedford, VA 24523 with checks made out to Habitat for Humanity — Critical Home Repair.

SML steps out for Grand Winter Gala The fashionistas in New York for fashion week had nothing on those who turned out in their finest for the Grand Winter Gala’s Casino Night on Saturday at the Water’s Edge Country Club. Despite a few last-minute cancellations because of illness, spokeswoman Kimberley Harden Tyson said she was pleased with the turnout. “We had 123 attendees, which is a pretty full house,” she said. Music for dancing was provided by the Kings, and a gourmet meal was prepared by chef John Hanek. Guests had an opportunity to try their luck at blackjack, craps and other casino games. The night’s top bettor was Rob Whitener, who racked up $480,000 in chips and took home the grand prize of a custom gift basket and couple’s spa day donated by Spa La La Blue. Tyson said proceeds from the event, about $6,500, will be donated to the Agape Center, Helping Hands of Franklin County and Smith Mountain Lake Christian School. — Laker Weekly

Here’s to a prosperous off-season Those of us who live at the lake yearround know that each season holds it own beauty. But while leafless trees allow unobstructed views of the water, cooler temperatures sometimes mean fewer visits to the cash registers of some businesses. The off-season always has presented special challenges to lake businesses. Some close all together to reopen when the sun hangs high and long in the sky. Oar Knot is new to the lake’s business landscape. It is in the same spot at Bridgewater Plaza that The Mouse Trap occupied before Lake House Beanery took it over. Oar Knot opened several weeks ago. “There will be menu changes in the deli. For instance, we will be offering fried chicken in the summer months, said Andy Andrews, one of the owners. “The wine shop also is expanding. Frank Gatto is in charge of the wine Oar Knot has on its shelves. He also is continuing the weekly wine tastings he conducted for Lake House Beanery. The inventory includes wines domestic,
5
local and from all over the world. On Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., Gatto opens bottles and helps educate customers on the intricacies of wine and helps them discover new favorites. “I usually do three or four bottles, said Gatto. “We sit there and drink wine and have cheeses to cleanse the palate. Gatto said 20 to 30 people typically come in for the tastings during the offseason. Tasters get 15 percent off any six bottles of wines. Many wineries close their doors during the winter months, but Hickory Hill Vineyards & Winery does not. The Moneta winery is open on a limited basis during the weekends. Special off-season events have made it a destination. “This is the second year we’ve been open in the winter, said Wendy Furrow-Scott of Hickory Hills Vineyards & Winery. “We’ve been surprised at the turnout we’ve been getting on Saturday. Most of the people are coming from Lynchburg, Madison Heights and Roanoke. This past weekend, we had a group of ladies from all over. They get together once a year, and they’ve been coming out for the past two years.
The winery offers complimentary tasting every Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. To mark Valentine’s Day, Hickory Hill offered wine and chocolate drop-ins on Thursday. It will do so again today from 2 until 5 p.m., said Furrow-Scott. The winery is partnering with Stacy’s Sweet Spot. Furrow-Scott met owner Stacy Noland through a professional group, and the two small businesses have teamed up throughout the year. On Saturday, Hickory Hills will continue the Valentine’s theme with Winter Whites and Red Hearts. The complimentary wine tasting is from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Savoy-Lee Winery has complimentary tasting every weekend. It is open Friday through Monday from noon until 5 p.m. Brooks Mill Winery, a family-owned fruit winery in Wirtz, will open in mid-March. Hickory Hill will offer a cure for the winter blues with its Cabin Fever series, which begins in March. The grounds are open to picnickers. Furrow-Scott said those early spring days are perfect for kite flying and enjoying a glass of award-winning wine in the scenic picnic area, which overlooks the vineyard.
