From the Publisher | NOTES

THE RESULTS ARE IN... At Laker Media, the New Year always brings excitement around the office. It’s not only a chance to look ahead to the stories and photography we’ll share in our upcoming issues of the magazine, it’s also when we get to reveal the winners of our annual Best of SML Awards. This issue marks the ninth installment of the awards and the second time the voting has been conducted completely online. Once again, readers have shown us with a strong response that they are passionate about their favorite businesses, restaurants and entertainment options at SML. Award recipients – as well as the winners of five $100 gift certificates from local business partners – can be found starting on Page 37. Congratulations to all and thank you to everyone who voted. The Smith Mountain Laker staff has worked hard to put together its own "Best of" with this first issue of the year. From a stunning cover to two comprehensive guides (Lodging and Wedding), there’s plenty to hunker down with on a cold winter’s day. I’m also sure you’ll enjoy the features on mosaic artist Dotti Stone, actress and film producer Sara Elizabeth Timmins and the lakeside home of Joyce and Jim Sciaretta.

We’ve also been busy making enhancements to our Web site, smithmountainlake.com. Be sure to log on to check out the newest features, which are detailed below. Best wishes for happiness and good health in 2010.

Mark Vosskamp Publisher

Many business owners assign low priority to recordkeeping, at least until their first tax audit. Then they find legitimate deductions have been disallowed or revenues overestimated, solely because of inadequate documentation. Without supporting evidence, tax auditors create their own estimates of income and expenses, often resulting in inflated tax assessments. Operating without keeping records is a little like driving blindfolded. Besides saving tax dollars, proper records can help business people identify and evaluate trends in earnings and expenditures and thereby plan more intelligently. They also facilitate preparation of financial statements, which are required when applying for financing or reporting to regulatory agencies. Recording begins with organizing original documents like sales and purchases invoices, cash register tapes, work orders, and check stubs. The individual transactions are then recapped in sales journals, check registers, disbursements journals, and similar books of original entry. These books, in turn, are summarized in general ledgers, which group activities by account categories. Using a computer base accounting system such as QuickBooks by Intuit can make the above recording requirements convenient, accurate and easily analyzed for accuracy. You should also retain bank statements, financial statements, tax return copies, and supporting worksheets for income, payroll, excise, and sales taxes. Agreements, contracts, and similar legal documents should be filed in secured areas or stored in safety deposit boxes. The normal statute of limitations for an IRS audit is three years, but that period may be extended to six years if the agency suspects gross income has been understated by more than 25 percent. Since the statute normally starts with the due date of a return (not the actual tax year), it’s wise to keep most records for seven years. Certain types of records, such as loan papers, asset purchase contracts, or long-term investment documents, should be kept for the life of the loan or asset plus seven years. Partnership agreements, articles of incorporation, operating agreements, and similar documents should be kept permanently. To learn more about using QuickBooks in your business, please contact me or for any other assistance concerning your individual and business accounting and tax needs; please feel free to contact me at (540) 297-4204. Feedback | LETTERS and notes in the mail, to two people actually pulling up next to me in their cars as I was out on a run, we have received an extraordinary response from the community. Please know that your magazine is read and loved by so many wonderful folks! Pam Rickard Boones Mill

Grace and Gratitude I must write to thank you for featuring “our story in your last issue [“It is well with my soul, November/December 2009]. It is such a privilege for me to be able to share the story of the grace, healing and restoration I have experienced through my recovery journey. From phone calls, emails

Beautiful Boats, Friendly Owners What a terrific magazine the November/December issue is! The content is superb, including Pam Rickard’s personal story of triumph over adversity, and the great story about Rick and Pam McKown building a magnificent home themselves through six years of commitment. But what really caught my eye was your coverage of the Antique and Classic Boat

Festival and Show at Mariners Landing on your “Social Seen page. You captured the essence of what makes the antique boat community at the lake so unique – the people. Beautiful antique boats are only a part of it – it’s really the friendly people who cherish them, work together on them and use them that make our group so great! That page of pictures really conveyed the fun they have and their love of our boating heritage. All of us appreciate the Laker Magazine’s long-term support and interest in antique boating, beginning with several early issues. Your many stories about our members and their boats have done a lot to foster continuing public interest and greater appreciation of these wonderful boats. Thank you! Roger Smith President, SML Chapter The Antique & Classic Boat Society

Loving Life at SML We just wanted to let you know how much we enjoy the magazine. We bought our house here four years before we moved down full time, and the Laker was a way for us to keep in touch with what was going on and to anticipate our move. Now that we’ve been on the lake two years (and LOVE it), with each issue we enjoy seeing people we know, and learning about new things to do. Keep up the good work! t Fiji Dana Johoske of Moneta snapped this photo of his wife, Vicky, holding the Laker along with Salanieta Rasari at Likuliku Lagoon Resort on the island of Malolo in Fiji. Johoske said Rasari, the resort’s manager, “was amazed at the real estate section and the beautiful homes at Smith Mountain Lake.” The Johoskes visited Fiji in July to celebrate Vicky’s birthday and stayed in one of the over-water bures pictured in the background.

Alaska u Suzanne and John Beels of Hardy spent 13 days in June in Alaska to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The couple is pictured here with the Laker on the banks of the Nenana River in Denali. “We saw scenery more beautiful and vast than we had ever seen,” Suzanne said. “Denali National Park was awe-inspiring. ... It was truly the vacation of a lifetime.”

The Geiranger fjord in Norway was a stunning backdrop for this photo of Don and Carolyn Fink of Moneta. The couple spent three weeks last summer traveling through Norway and Sweden in their new Volvo V-70 station wagon, which they picked up at the Volvo factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. They covered 1,500 miles while visiting friends and Carolyn’s relatives.

t Russia Gary and Carol Doninger of Penhook spent two weeks last summer cruising through the Baltics, including a stop at the Peterhof Palace and Gardens (pictured in background) outside St. Petersburg, Russia. Located on a cliff overlooking the Baltic Sea, the palace and gardens were laid out by Peter the Great in the early 1700s and were intended to be used as the official summer residence for the royal family.

Moldova u Natalia Andronic, Alexandru Lasco and Margareta Pavlov show off the Laker in front of the statue of Stefan Cel Mare in Chisnau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova. The three college students spent last summer at Smith Mountain Lake working at Virginia Dare Cruises and Marina and Portside Restaurant. Lasco said Stefan Cel Mare, Prince of Moldova from 1457 to 1504, is remembered for helping the country maintain its independence against the ambitions of Hungary, Poland and the Ottoman Empire.

p Gettysburg Philip Sheridan and Deanna Cebulash of Moneta took the Laker to Gettysburg, Pa., last spring where they had this photo taken at the Virginia Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park. Sculpted in bronze by Frederick William Sievers, the memorial features Gen. Robert E. Lee atop his horse, Traveller. At the base is a group representing men who left civil occupations to join the Confederate Army, including a mechanic, a farmer and an artist. It was dedicated on June 6, 1917.

UNLIKE

many vacation retreats or retiree habitats, Jim and Joyce Sciaretta's Smith Mountain Lake house is home to a family. Oldest son Michael lived here briefly until his marriage to Rachel in 2003. Daughter Alexandra was in residence seven years before graduating from Franklin County High School in 2009 and heading off to college. Son Chris, 16, a junior at FCHS, is a full-timer. One-yearold granddaughter Payton spends a couple days a week visiting Grandma Joyce, who baby-sits. The Sciarettas love the informality of lake living. "We have no formal living room and no formal dining room," said Joyce. "We don't live like that. We're very informal people." The Montego Bay home has a great room that Jim describes as "well lived in" that flows uninterrupted to the kitchen, with an eating area en route. It's all very open. Joyce describes the decor as "cottage style." It's a lakeside version of English Country, with comfy furniture that invites visitors to sprawl on the couch. This style typically uses colors from nature - reminiscent of an English country garden. Joyce chose the various coordinating fabrics and had the upholstery and drapery work professionally done. "I love color, cozy and comfortable," she said. Also typical of this decorating style are collections. One of the Sciaretta's most treasured is a family photo collection that lines the hallway and covers the top of several furniture pieces. Joyce also collects Brambly Hedge English books and china and has prints by illustrator Tasha Tudor, a Caldecott Medal winner, on display. The charm of outdoor Southern living is evident in the large windows that draw magnificent lake and mountain views into the house. There's ample space to have a cup of tea on the intimate patio outside the master suite or to entertain a crowd, such as the guests at Michael and Rachel's wedding, on the large patio off the kitchen. The ceremony itself was on the level, grassy point which has since been the site of volleyball games, horseshoe contests and bocce ball games in the specially installed clay bocce court (similar to a clay tennis court). It's an easy walk - no stairs involved - to the dock, where a personal watercraft, two boats and two kayaks are housed. The home's 450 feet of shoreline also includes a natural sandy beach. "When we were living in Ohio and planning the house, we told the architect that we wanted it to look like it had been here a long time," said Joyce. Jim added, "We got that look by having different ceiling heights and six different roof pitches, as if from several successive additions." The only actual addition, built two years later, was a pergola added over the patio where the wedding reception tent had been. Wisteria is being trained to cover the structure, but with only one year of growth, it just reaches the roof. The Sciarettas, both born and raised in New Jersey, first visited the lake in 2000 while living in Cleveland, Ohio, and quickly decided to make SML their home.

hy limit “home” to the feeling you get inside your house. Extend that sense of welcoming all the way to the curb. A driveway, walkway or patio crafted with Belgard pavers adds distinct and timeless beauty to your home’s exterior design. COLORFUL CONTINUED Jim's business - investing in real estate and stocks - was easily relocated. He and his brother-in-law, Gene Butterfield, teamed up as contractor and builder. They broke ground on Sept. 11, 2001. "I got a cellphone call asking if I was watching TV," Jim said. "I said, 'What do you mean? I'm standing in a hole. There's no TV around here.' We saw the tragic events later on the evening news." Nine months after the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., the four-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot home was finished. "We expect to grow old living here," Jim said. "The lot is flat with no steps to the dock; the house has all the primary living spaces on the main floor, including master and guest suites. There's no basement. The second floor has the children's rooms." Interesting use has been made of often-wasted attic space. An interior stairway leads to the garage attic - a large, finished room with a pool table. Another attic space houses a workout room, and what the homeowners call the 'super attic,' the very highest one, has been claimed by daughter Alex. Her large loft - a combination bedroom, study area and lounging space - is painted appropriately wild colors. Her former bedroom has been turned into a guest/ grandchild bedroom. Outside the home, it's evident that Joyce enjoys gardening. The prolific hydrangeas and other flowers reflect the pink and green color scheme of the inside. There's also an extensive herb garden. "We especially love this area because of the peacefulness, the beauty and all the nice, friendly people here," Joyce said.

New products for the garden range from fun to fantastical In the future, trees and plants will send us emails to say they need watering or fertilizing. Sound far-fetched? That's one prediction made by futurist Lowell Catlett, an administrator in the college of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University. As implausible as that may sound, there are all sorts of hightech devices available to home gardeners that come close to Catlett's vision of plants notifying you when they need attention. Other digital tools are excellent for record-keeping, and some are just pure fun. Smith Mountain Lake gardeners can contemplate these gadgets, all of which provide an exhilarating "gee whiz" factor, while cuddled up inside during the winter months.

Automated Gardening

There's not yet a machine that will weed your garden for you, but automatic timers have transformed many garden tasks. Attach a timer to a drip irrigation or sprinkler system, and let the garden water itself. If you're going away for more than a day or two and the containers aren't already watered by drip irrigation, cluster them together, set up a portable sprinkler so it sprays into all the containers, and set it on a timer to water daily. Another great timer application is for garden lights. Hook up a timer to the light system and set it so they turn on and off when desired. Don't forget to adjust the time as the daylight hours shift throughout the year. Those who enjoy

Garden Journals for the 21st Century

Keeping a garden journal where you record the names of your plants and data such as bloom times, disease problems, rainfall, fertilizing schedule and so forth is an important way to keep track of your garden. Today, instead of a notebook, use your computer. You can download photos of your plants either from the internet or from your own digital camera and create charts and graphs of data. Information can be moved around and copied with ease so you can reorganize your garden or your journal system easily. Your digital camera also is an invaluable garden tool. Daffodil maven Lina Burton uses hers to keep a record of where she planted her bulbs. "I photograph my beds after I've planted them," she said. "Then I print the photographs out in black and white on plain 8½-by-11-inch paper and write the name of each cultivar directly on the paper. That way, if/when deer run through the garden with my collie in hot pursuit and labels are pulled out, I still know where everything is."

Time Lapse Photography: Watch Your Garden Grow

Under the "gee whiz" category falls the Timelapse PlantCam (wingscapes.com). This completely weatherproof, digital camera takes photos or videos at set time intervals. It then automatically stitches together the still photos to create a seamless movie, eliminating the need for external software. You can, for example, watch a month of plant growth in 30 seconds.

extending their gardening season often utilize a cold frame, a bottomless, boxlike structure used to protect plants from coldweather elements. Managing a cold frame used to be a laborintensive activity because someone needed to be monitoring its internal temperature all the time. On sunny days, even when the outside air temperature is low, it can get hot enough under the frame's glass to frizzle the plants; the lid needs to be raised to allow the hot air to escape. When the sun disappears on cold days, the lid needs to be closed. Today, a cold frame can almost run itself with a non-electrical device involving cylinders filled with a fluid that expands as it heats up. The expansion forces up an arm that lifts the cold frame lid. When the temperature drops, the liquid contracts, lowering the roof. Check these devices out at mastergardening. com/too-1023.html. GARDENING CONTINUED At four megapixels, the images are clear, and you have a choice of low, medium or high resolution images depending on your preferred quality and how much memory you want to use (there are 16 megabytes available). The focal range is from 11 inches to infinity, making it possible to capture the details of a seedling emerging from the soil or a flower unfurling on a distant magnolia tree. Four AA batteries keep the camera running for about 8 weeks. View the results on your computer by downloading the high-resolution images via a USB port, or store the images in the memory card and transfer the images from there. And if there's one image that is particularly compelling, you can save it as an individual photograph.

Metering and Monitoring

There are meters and sensors available to gardeners designed to measure and log a diverse array of data, including soil pH, soil moisture, light conditions, soil and air temperatures, and air humidity. Soil pH gives you a good indication of what plants will do well in any particular soil. Temperature data is indispensable if you are mapping GDDs (grower degree days) in your garden. Why should you care? Because, with that information, you can predict the onset of disease problems, outbreaks of insects and the germination of weeds, thus allowing you to minimize the use of any pesticide by targeting applications to exactly when they are needed. The better temperature, moisture and light loggers collect data over a period of days and then connect to your computer where the information is downloaded and transformed into helpful graphs. Check out Web sites such as microdaq.com and planetnatural.com for a variety of products in different price ranges. A new company called EasyBloom has created a plant sensor that functions in three modes: Recommend Mode that collects sunlight, temperature, humidity, and soil drainage data and makes recommendations for suitable plants based on the findings; the Monitor Mode that keeps track of the growing conditions for a specific plant; and the Water Mode that sets the probe chirping if your plant needs to be watered. Once you have gathered the data, you plug the device into the USB port of an internet-connected computer that has been registered with the company, and the results are revealed immediately in the form of graphs, charts and lists. Find out more at easybloom.com. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. She is the author of nine garden books, including “Design Ideas for Home Landscaping,” “Poolscaping: Gardening and Landscaping Around Your Pool and Spa,” and “Complete Home Landscaping."

Fragments TO FINE ART

Dotti Stone uses an ancient art form to create practical beauty Story by Lindsey Wagnon • Photography by Kim Dillon and courtesy of Dotti Stone

PIECE

by hand-cut piece, Dotti Stone intently arranges slices of colored tile, careful to follow her pattern to create an enchanting three-dimensional image. It’s a technique similar to the one used by ancient Greek craftsmen to arrange pebble designs on city streets. “Mosaic is a centuries-old form of art,” said Stone, who operates SML Mosaics from her Wirtz home studio. “Early on it was used for floors, walls and ceilings in the homes of the elite and to relate mythological tales and religious stories in public and religious buildings. Today, it is used for public art murals and community and school projects.” The technique and functions of mosaic evolved under Roman influence, and pebbles were traded in for other, more versatile materials such as unglazed porcelain, glazed ceramic, vitreous glass, marble and smalti. Its range in function is what has captured Stone’s enthusiasm. “It is the timeless beauty and versatility of mosaics, from ancient times to the way it integrates into today’s living, that attracts me to it. It is decorative, utilitarian and has become recognized and accepted as fine art,” she said Stone’s journey to mosaic art included years working in other artistic methods, including commercial design, photography and stained glass. After graduating in 1965 from the Commercial Art and Design program at Richmond Professional Institute [now Virginia Commonwealth University], Stone became a professional photographer in Washington D.C. Eventually, the demands and deadlines of photography took their toll and Stone turned to a fresh artistic experience. “I was getting burned out and took classes in stained glass for a diversion,” said Stone. “I enjoyed it so much I exhibited at The Design for Living Home Show in Washington D.C., for several years.” In 2004, Stone discovered a similar style of art that appealed to her. “I became interested in mosaics after seeing some mosaic tables at a craft show. I wound up buying a small occasional table which became the inspiration to find classes,” she said. Stone kept up work as a photographer while practicing mosaic art until 2007 when another burnout hit. Fatigued by city life, Stone acted on a suggestion to move to Smith Mountain Lake. “A friend of mine moved to Wirtz and told me about a lot for

sale across the road from her,” said Stone. “Since I wanted a quieter, less stressful life, I pursued the idea of relocating here, and it finally happened.” During her time at SML, Stone has developed a reputation as an accomplished mosaic artist. “Being in this beautiful area there is lots of inspiration for mosaic works. I’ve done lake scenes and plan to do more. I recently mosaiced a travel guitar for the League of Roanoke Artists 2009 Showcase at the Jefferson Center this fall,” she said. Another of Stone’s work is displayed on the other side of the world. “One of the projects in which I was especially elated to participate was the Steve Irwin Memorial Mural at the Australian Zoo. Mosaic artists worldwide, students and children were asked to submit mosaics. I have seen pictures of some of the panels and saw my cockatiel up in a tree,” said Stone. In addition to designing, Stone promotes mosaic art through teaching. The artist teaches classes at Bower Center for the Arts in Bedford, at youth art camps and plans to teach workshops at Green Ridge in Roanoke this fall. “I very much enjoy teaching. I want my students to understand just what goes in to creating fine mosaics. I want people to learn about mosaics, that it is an art form,” said Stone. Mosaic being recognized and accepted as fine art is an important point for Stone, who says many people don’t recognize it as such. “A common misconception is that mosaics is only smashing some tiles and gluing them down to a table top or planter and grouting,” said Stone. “People ask if all the pieces are hand cut because it seems mind-boggling that anyone can take the time to make it happen.” To would-be artists intimidated by mosaic’s tedious nature, Stone encourages simplicity. “Keeping it simple is the best advice I can give anyone,” said Stone. “Mosaic can give people pleasure making projects using found objects that don’t take enormous amounts of time or it can be pursued as a fine art form. Mosaic art is not for people who like instant gratification. It is labor intensive; however, if it is what a person is passionate about, then the time is secondary.” For more information on Dotti Stone’s artwork and workshops, visit smlmosaics.com or call 540.719.1645. EMBRACING a new role 42

January 路 February 2010| SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Film producer finds peace and inspiration at Smith Mountain Lake Story by Lindsey Wagnon • Photography Kim Dillon and courtesy of Sara Elizabeth Timmins

THERE'S

something about Smith Mountain Lake that tends to transform those who spend time along its shores. For those seeking refuge, it can provide serenity. Others find a sense of peaceful reflection not unlike the lake itself. Sara Elizabeth Timmins, a 33-year-old Hollywood actress and film producer, found a visit to her parents’ home in December 2007 changed her life. "I had been working on a project for two months and was living out of a suitcase," said Timmins. "I felt that something was missing in my life, but I couldn’t figure out what. I came out to the lake to clear my head and went on a walk. It was almost instantaneous; everything became clear. I suddenly felt that I wasn’t searching anymore." Timmins’ experience at Smith Mountain Lake proved to be a turning point in her life and career. Until that visit, the 1999 graduate of Xavier University in Ohio had spent 10 years living the hectic lifestyle of an actress and film producer. "I always knew that performing was my passion. I started off as a dancer and it went into theater," she said. "I was president of my high school and was very involved in a lot of leadership activities in college. I realized a strong point of mine was leadership. My dad told me I should produce. I took my passion for acting and my strengths for organizing and it led me to my passion today, producing films." Timmins’ career has included acting in various theater and film roles as well as production work in independent films, movies and television shows such as Cold Case and The West Wing. She’s worked alongside a number of famous actors, including Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Lynda Carter and Anne Hathaway. In addition to acting and producing in California, Timmins travels to schools as a motivational speaker. "I love to inspire and motivate people. I help students understand the importance of their choices today and how it affects their future," she said. Despite years of performing, producing and speaking, Timmins had a lingering longing. During that walk at Smith Mountain Lake two years ago, she discovered what was missing. "I’ve always been go, go, go, not living in the moment, never appreciating what was around me," she said. "There is a magic to the lake. For me, it was about getting away from the city, the cellphone, the go, go, go. What was missing was what I would speak about: making an impact." Timmins returned to Los Angeles with a renewed perspective. The soul-searching journey inspired her to create a film company, Life Out Loud Films. "My mantra in life has been, ‘Dare to live life out loud.’ Dream. Act. Risk. Embrace," she said. "I was putting 800 percent into other people’s projects and I thought maybe it’s time to do my own." A new and radical risk was the next step for Timmins –

creating and producing a film from start to finish. The main character? Smith Mountain Lake. "I see the lake representing family, nature, recreation ... it’s a film about searching. So many people are searching for something but in the wrong place. The lake offers a reflection of themselves, where they can find the answers," she said. True to her commitment to make an impact, Timmins plans to use the production of the film, titled Lake Effects, to influence the SML community in a positive way. "We want to give back to economic development and tourism," she said. "We aren’t changing the name of the lake – we want people to know where it is. It’s not my film anymore, it’s the community’s film." Timmins relocated to Smith Mountain Lake last fall to continue overseeing film production and wrap up financing. She considers herself among the many Lakers who haven’t grown up here, but have been drawn to it like she was. "There are a lot of transplants at SML," she said. "People have chosen to be here, which is very powerful. Everybody here has found it just like I found it. It’s very easy to be here and not appreciate it. I try to remind myself every morning to appreciate the beauty of the lake." Filming for Lake Effects is scheduled to begin in the fall. For more information, visit lifeoutloudfilms.com.

Get away to Gatlinburg for romance, adventure and scenic beauty Story by Lynda Imirie • Photography courtesy of Gatlinburg Department of Tourism Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, a significant anniversary or just an opportunity to say "I love you" in a special way, think beyond a box of chocolates, a bouquet of flowers or a candlelit dinner. If your repertoire of romantic expression is suffering from the same old, same old, it’s time to broaden your horizons. Why not plan a weekend getaway with your special someone to a place where romance fills the air and the scenic beauty takes your breath away? Nestled in the heart and soul of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, Tenn., is renowned for – among other things – its abundance of story-book chapels and chalet hideaways. Couples planning to get married can choose from more than 20 official wedding chapels, from rustic to luxurious, most with picturesque gazebos, gardens or waterfall settings. Gatlinburg is second only to Las Vegas in weddings performed annually in the U.S. according to the Gatlinburg Department of Tourism. Renee and Timmy Mullins of Rocky Mount married Dec. 5, 1997 at Gatlinburg’s Little Log Wedding Chapel, a secluded spot on the outskirts of town that borders Great Smoky Mountains National Park. "We didn’t want a big ceremony," said Renee, who teaches at

Dudley Elementary in Wirtz. "We had heard how nice Tennessee was and thought it would be a pretty place to get married. "The town’s Christmas light parade was that night and we actually got stuck in traffic on our way to get married. But we watched the parade, and it snowed. It was really beautiful." Victorian Gardens Wedding Chapel, designed in the style of a local historical church, is reputed to be one of the most photographed chapels in the South. Through the Bell Tower entrance, an expansive lobby decorated with a colorful Victorian floral carpet, a two-story stained-glass window and a crystal chandelier welcomes guests. In the sanctuary, 10 lighted sconces line the walls leading to a garden-like altar with a white wooden arbor draped with magnolias, wisteria and roses. Cupid’s Chapel of Love savors the title of Gatlinburg’s Historic Roadside Chapel, a popular tourist landmark. Specifically designed for the budget-conscious, Cupid’s offers a variety of wedding packages, each of which includes the minister, music, photographs and a "Just Married" sign. Not just for weddings, Gatlinburg is perfect for a second honeymoon or just spending a few romantic days relaxing in the mountains, strolling among secluded forests and cascading waterfalls or picnicking beside a babbling brook.

LOVE CONTINUED Gatlinburg also offers an abundance of attractions for couples and families. Despite its size (the population is just more than 3,500), the town is a gateway to mountain snow skiing, rafting Class IV whitewater, golf, fish-filled streams and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. The Gatlinburg Sky Lift and Aerial Tramway provide visitors a breathtaking view of the mountains’ glorious scenery. Among the most popular tourist attractions are those sponsored by Ripley’s, including the Marvelous Mirror Maze and Candy Factory with 100 challenging mirrored corridors. There’s also the world-class, 1.4-million-gallon aquarium as well as Ripley’s Moving Theater, which offers viewers two 4-D movies from seats that bump, dip and turn in eight directions. Not to be missed is the famous Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum of unique and unusual artifacts. Visitors young and old will also enjoy the adventures at Wild Bear Falls, a 60,000-square-foot mountain-themed indoor water park open year-round. Other sites to consider include the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum (showcasing 20,000 sets) and the Hollywood Star Cars Museum with nearly four dozen vehicles that appeared in movies and TV shows in the past 50 years. More than just the wildflowers blossom in spring in and around Gatlinburg. Special events bloom in abundance beginning with the Holly and Shamrock Parade March 13. This beloved annual event brings together St. Nicholas and St. Patrick in a unique Christmas and Irish celebration. From March 31 to April 3, Gatlinburg hosts the Arts and  Natural beauty and a variety of outdoor activities make Gatlinburg a popular getaway destination.  Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies features more than 350 individual species of aquatic creatures.

FOOD LION at Moneta Commons

For summer 2010, Smith Mountain Lake-area shoppers will have a new alternative for picking up the provisions needed to feed their families and hungry visitors. A new Food Lion, being built along Virginia 122 near the intersection with Hendricks Store Road, is slated to open in late March. The 35,000-square-foot store will include "an expanded selection of fresh, quality produce, meats and deli/bakery products, as well as a pharmacy with a drive-through window," said Jennifer Speck, Food Lion corporate spokesperson. Other service features such as Western Union, Blue Rhino propane tank exchange, Rug Doctor rentals, ATM and a Coinstar machine will be available, she said. An adjoining 13,000 square feet of space is being built to house a prospective restaurant and several retail stores. "It's just a matter of time," said Bill Berry of Westlake's Phillips Development, which owns the 33-acre Moneta Commons property that surrounds the realigned intersection of Rt. 122, Hendricks Store Road and Diamond Hill Road. "Development is slow now, but it will come back. I've seen dips like this three times before. What draws people to Smith Mountain Lake has not changed." Berry said Food Lion conducted an extensive market study before deciding to build a new store in Moneta. "As a national chain, it is a strong anchor," he said. "The neighboring sites are ideal for fast food, convenience stores, gas and other shops."

Berry also credited Bedford County Administrator Kathleen Guzi, Chief of Planning Mary Zirkle, retired Director of Economic Development Sue Montgomery and Debbie Shinstine, the Virginia Department of Transportation's residency administrator for Bedford County, for being instrumental in the project. "Food Lion wanted the new store open in time for the start of the 2010 season," he said. "That team did what had to be done to make it possible." The Food Lion at Westlake will remain open, said store manager Jason Carter. Added Speck: "Food Lion routinely evaluates its stores as part of an ongoing effort to serve our customers. We feel that we can best serve customers in the Westlake area by continuing to provide a location where they can get their everyday grocery needs."

Long-time SML sweethearts find the ideal spot to say "I do" Story by Lindsey Wagnon • Photography by Holland Photo Arts On a sunny day in October 2008, bride Jennifer Casteel approached the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in a golf cart at The Water’s Edge Country Club community. The ruffles on her Jackie Kennedy-inspired dress fluttered as the little chapel came into view. She stepped out of the cart in gold high heels and slipped her hand under the arm of her awaiting father. At last, the event she and bridegroom Briggs Casteel had spent the past year carefully planning was here. "When I arrived to the chapel, people were spilling out of the church onto the golf course," recalled Jennifer. "They were being entertained by The Hall Trio from Roanoke. My dad was waiting for me and immediately the ceremony started. The flower girl, my niece, the ring bearers, my nephews, made their way down

the aisle. My maid of honor was next, and then it was my turn. The tiny little doors swung open and I was on my way." A quaint wedding ensued, the first to be held in the 19th century chapel, newly restored by The Willard Companies, developer of The Water’s Edge. "We were having a very difficult time trying to pin down our wedding location, and it seemed like we were on the verge of an elopement," said Jennifer. "Briggs’ mother lives in The Water’s Edge and took us by the chapel one day saying that it had just been renovated. We instantly fell in love."

HEARTS CONTINUED A charming chapel in a fall Smith Mountain Lake setting was an idyllic fit for both bride and bridegroom, a sentimental reflection of their long friendship and 10-year romance. "I grew up on Smith Mountain Lake and Briggs’ family moved here in 1994," said Jennifer. "Briggs and I met in the sixth grade at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Rocky Mount. "We were on the lookout for each other that first week because our siblings were friends, and both of us had heard a lot about the other. We were friends all through school, but it wasn’t until the summer before our freshmen year in college we began dating. We maintained a long-distance relationship in college and continued to date afterwards. Total dating time [was] 10 years before we finally tied the knot." Much of the courtship was anchored at SML. "We spent our summers during college dating at the lake. Briggs used to pick me up on his dad’s boat, and we’d go out to dinner or meet friends for the evening," said Jennifer. Having discovered the ideal location for the ceremony, wedding plans began to unfold. Jennifer said the event’s informal feel was inspired by the country chapel. "We felt like the chapel lent itself to a casual and relaxed afternoon ceremony, so we went from there," she said. "We hired vendors in the area with good reputations, shared our ideas and kept our fingers crossed. I was very relaxed about the day coming together. I felt like nothing could spoil the uniqueness of the church. We were elated to be getting married in the little chapel nestled on the shore of our beloved lake." Because of extremely limited space inside the chapel (it seats about 40), only a small number of guests attended the ceremony. Afterward, the intimate group joined more guests at The Water’s Edge Country Club to celebrate. "Our reception was a lot of fun. Guests enjoyed the patio at The Water’s Edge, and the sunset over Smith Mountain Lake was beautiful that evening," Jennifer said. "We danced the night away and then left on our little red golf cart, took a quick boat ride to Bernard’s Landing and spent our first night as Mr. and Mrs. Casteel in a condo overlooking Smith Mountain." The fairytale setting made an impression on the Casteels’ wedding guests. "For many of our friends, it was their first visit to SML. While Briggs and I were getting ready on Saturday, our guests enjoyed the lake. Some rented boats at Bernard’s and others sat by the pool," Jennifer said. "Everyone loved the chapel and couldn’t believe we were blessed enough to grow up in such a beautiful part of Virginia." Blessed is also how Jennifer and Briggs continue to feel about their big day at SML. "Looking back, we are both so happy with our decision to get married in the chapel," said Jennifer. "Smith Mountain Lake is our home. It was so fitting and special to us both." The Casteels now live and work in Richmond. Jennifer is a reading intervention specialist at Goochland Elementary School and Briggs is Vice President of LimbGear, a company that manufactures and distributes accessory apparel. Jennifer said they visit SML on holidays and frequently during the summer months. 54

HELLO, HONEYMOON! Newlyweds find romance and relaxation at SML Story by Lindsey Wagnon • Photography by Lesley Wray Photography

The limousine will arrive in a few minutes. Plastic bubble containers are pulled from decorated baskets. Party-weary guests hunt for kicked off high heels and crumpled suit jackets. The bride and groom, exhaustion taking hold, give final good-byes and sentimental hugs. It’s a scene that plays itself out time and time again - a wedding coming to an end. Fortunately, the end of a wedding is the beginning of what brides and grooms really look forward to: the honeymoon. Tradition dictates that, after the big day, the newlyweds jet off for a relaxing, romantic getaway – groom’s treat. But just like wedding trends come and go, the honeymoon has also evolved over time. Today, couples are strategic about honeymoon planning. Many are planning less expensive, less time-consuming vacations, but with all the benefits of a top-notch destination. Enter Smith Mountain Lake. Many of the features that make SML a vacation hot spot also make it rich in romance. Postponing a long honeymoon for several months, David and Laura Massey left Charlottesville the day after their October 2009 wedding for a two-night recoup at the LoveStone Inn Bed and Breakfast in Huddleston. “I had just started a new job and my wife had just started teaching for her first year,” David Massey said. “We didn’t want to take a whole lot of time off from work. We didn’t want to have to travel too far. I was looking around to find places that were close and would give us the fall feel. My aunt has stayed at the LoveStone Inn a few times. She was the one who gave us the recommendation.” Massey said a highlight of their stay was exploring the area. “We drove around, took some pictures and found some places to eat. It was nice that we had a chance to explore without there being a whole lot of traffic and it being super busy,” he said. LoveStone Inn owner Dawn Spencer said honeymooning guests can take advantage of the facility’s various romance services such as a private sunset cruise and candlelit dinners overlooking the lake. “I have guests saying all the time how peaceful and quiet it is here,” Spencer said. “They see stars they’ve never seen before. When the moon and the stars are out, it’s like you can reach up and touch them. I think that all adds to the romance.” Newlyweds Jessica and Jeremy Call were married at Mariners Landing Resort in late September. Jessica said the couple chose

to linger at the resort after the wedding to spend extra time with friends and family. “We planned a low-key ‘mini-moon’ with plans for a bigger honeymoon later,” she said. “The lake is a perfect location for something like this. You can see as much or as little as you want, all at a relaxing pace in beautiful surroundings.” Lori Phillips, Director of Sales at Bernard’s Landing Resort, said honeymooning guests are attracted to the natural beauty of the area. “So many people want to stay away from the mainstream,” said Phillips. “Coming to SML offers lots to do while still enjoying each other. Couples have all the comforts of home in our condos and can play golf nearby, visit a local winery, go parasailing and so much more.” Laura Massey summed up the key reasons SML is a perfect honeymoon location. “All you want to do after a wedding is relax,” she said. “Going to a lake with such beautiful scenery was perfect. At the end of the day, we had a perfect honeymoon to end the perfect wedding.”

Spreading their Wings

It's a family affair at The Bluebird Bakery & Grill Story by Andie Gibson • Photography by Kim Dillon

Business owner. Cook. Baker. Wedding cake designer. Registered nurse. Mom. Grandma. Lori Greene brings new meaning to the expression, "She wears a lot of hats." "It's crazy sometimes, but I wouldn't have it any other way," said Greene, who runs The Bluebird Bakery & Grill at Downtown Moneta along with five members of her family. "She's the ultimate multi-tasker," said daughter-in-law Angela Greene, who helps in the bakery during the day and tends bar at the restaurant in the evening. "She preps and cooks; then she goes home and does her job there, takes care of her kids. She's incredible." Lori Greene, who also works full time handling workers' compensation claims for Boeing, opened the establishment in July 2009 after relocating to Smith Mountain Lake from south Florida in 2001. The Greenes had visited family in Roanoke, made a side trip to SML and fell in love with the area. "We were looking for the easy, quiet life," said Greene, whose life is anything but. In addition to her work responsibilities, she and husband Jonathan, a financial advisor for SunTrust who handles the fiscal part of the restaurant, have fostered more than 50 children in their 21-year marriage, including two they adopted - Emilee (6) and Nanci (4). The couple's older children are an integral part of the Bluebird's daily operations. Sons Ryan (25) and Justin (21) handle cooking for the restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week. Daughter Ashlie (23) manages the bakery. Angela Greene said the bakery has been busy since opening, but many customers don't realize the Bluebird is a full-service restaurant. "We see a lot of repeat business once they know we serve lunch and dinner," she said.

The menu includes primarily American cuisine with appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrees. Lori Greene said all items are made from scratch, including the mini sliders ($5.99 for four) topped with applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese, the meatloaf ($9.99) made from her mother's recipe, and the spaghetti with meat sauce ($7.99 for a small plate; $9.99 for large), another family specialty. Ryan and Justin Greene, who both worked as chefs in Miami, have put their culinary touch on several menu items, including the popular chicken wings (order extra crispy or extra wet), which are offered with 15 different sauces the brothers have developed. At the bar, 15 varieties of beer are available to wash them down. Lori Greene said the restaurant was designed with families in mind. On Saturdays, she said customers come in to watch sports on the restaurant's eight flat-screen TVs, one of which is equipped with a Wii game system for the kids to play. A kids' menu includes such favorites as chicken tenders for $4.99 and ribs for $5.25. In the cozy bakery, bench seating and a few tables welcome customers looking for a cup of coffee or specialty drink, including frapuccino, latte, espresso, iced coffee, hot chocolate and hot or cold tea ($1.49-$2.09). Fresh-baked bagels, donuts, muffins, scones and croissants are also available ($1.50-$2.50 each). If you're hungrier, order from the breakfast menu, which includes traditional favorites such as bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes and French toast. Or try the Moon Over Miami, a breakfast panini with ham, egg and cheese, served with a side of hash browns for $6.99.

BLUEBIRD CONTINUED The bakery is also where the Bluebird showcases its large selection of desserts (made from scratch in the upstairs pastry kitchen) including cookies, brownies and cupcakes as well as specialty cakes, pies and cheesecakes, available whole ($13.50-$34.99) or by the slice ($2.89-$4.99). A variety of freshly baked breads from On the Rise Bakery in Roanoke are also sold for between $3 and $4.50. Lori Greene said the restaurant is trying to be conscious about both the environment and helping the local community. The coffee is made from beans certified by Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organization whose mission is to protect ecosystems and provide good working conditions and fair wages to those who work in coffee growing regions of the world. Unsold bakery items are donated to Lake Christian Ministries three days a week. Lori Greene said she's also been busy making wedding and specialty cakes. Brides can make an appointment with her to view a cake portfolio and sample different flavors. In addition, the Bluebird offers catering services, will deliver to area businesses and can accommodate small group meetings, parties and receptions. The Bluebird Bakery & Grill is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call 540.597.8406 or log on to bluebirdbakeryandgrill.net.

January 路 February 2010| SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

to your door! Story by Gordon Kendall

Twenty years ago there were a mere 34 wineries in Virginia. Now, there are 140. A customer visiting a wine shop today with a well-stocked Virginia section would experience selection overload when confronted with such a diverse assortment. The quality of Virginia wine is widely variable, from absolute dreck to delightful and delicious. Excellence is primarily dependant on the winery owner’s commitment to doing things right as well as his or her pocketbook. So how can a novice experience a variety of tasty Virginia wines without having to wade through unpleasant bottles? The answer is the Virginia Wine of the Month Club. Each month, a tasting panel selects from a Virginia winery a red and a white wine based on quality. Club members can set up an account to receive one or two wines, and they can select all-red, allwhite or a variety, depending on personal preference. The monthly cost is $14.95 for one bottle and $24.95 for two bottles, plus shipping, which usually runs about $8. Additional bottles can be purchased, and a 10-percent discount is available for 12 mixed bottles. The Virginia Wine Journal, the club’s newsletter, is included and provides details about the featured winery and the people who run it. Comprehensive descriptions of the wine and how it is made are accompanied by enticing recipes for dishes to match with each wine. The journal is well-researched and concisely written and includes great information. If you have a wine lover on your gift list, the club offers gift memberships as well for the same price. There are no membership fees or advance charges. The club just debits your credit card each month for the charges corresponding to the number of bottles plus shipping. There is no minimum membership time for a standard membership, but there is a six-month minimum for a gift membership. If members decide they like a selection enough to buy more of it, additional bottles are usually available at a special price and a 10-percent discount on 12 or more bottles. Willis Logan, president, said the club was started by Berkley Mitchell, who got bitten by the wine bug after taking some wine-appreciation classes and visiting California in the 1980s. In 1989, he borrowed some money, printed 15,000 brochures and set up a booth at Vintage Virginia, the largest wine festival in the state. At the end of the day, he had signed

up about 50 people for the wine club. Today, the organization has more than 2,300 members, including some who reside outside of Virginia. Mitchell handed the reigns of the wine club over to Logan in 2002. Logan had previously been running the Virginia Company and today he runs the Virginia Shop in Charlottesville, where customers can find Virginia peanuts, hams, bacon, apple cider, jams, jellies, local pottery and a vast selection of other Virginia-made products. Logan said his tasting panel samples a multitude of wines several times a year. When they find something they like, they go back to the winery to negotiate a good deal. Buying in quantity enables the wine club to provide wines that would sell at the winery for about $18 to members for $12.50 if they are signed up for the twobottle program. Their goal, Logan said, is to "showcase the best caliber Virginia wines that are ready to drink now." The season is taken into account, so crisp white wines and lighter reds are selected for summer months and heavier; heartier wines are chosen for wintertime. They also strive for diversity, so members don’t receive the same variety of wine each month. The panel is headed by Neil Williamson, a guest lecturer at the University of Virginia and an adjunct faculty member in the viticulture program at Piedmont Community College. He also writes the club newsletter, which is included when the wines are shipped to customers. The wine club relies on the wineries to provide the recipes that are printed to match with the wine selection. The organization also has permission to use recipes from several books, including "Toast of the Tidewater." Logan recently launched a club for connoisseurs called the Cellar Reserve Club. Healthy

Shake the chill of winter with a fun and affordable soup social Story

by

Karen Cromwell

After a busy holiday season there are times when most of us feel like we probably spent more than we intended to, ate more than we should have, and can’t sign up for a gym membership fast enough. But if you’re still in the mood to get together with family and friends, a soup social is the perfect solution. It’s a party that’s lighter on your wallet, easier on your waistline and simple to put together – even after returning from your morning workout. A soup social is intended to be a relaxed get-together, so make it uncomplicated. All you need is large soup bowls, soup spoons, small bread plates and beverage glasses. A big basket of assorted breads on the table is the perfect centerpiece. Or you could really keep it simple and place your items on the kitchen counter for serving buffet-style. If the weather is conducive (and we can get some nice days at SML in January and February), grab some blankets and take your guests out on the deck to enjoy a cool evening with warm bowls of soup. When choosing your menu, consider preparing two to three soup selections that will likely please every person on your guest list. Keep in mind that the goal is to have fun with friends with inexpensive and healthy choices. Choose recipes from a few different cuisines and you can make this an international soup-tasting party. Add a couple of fresh-baked breads and a salad with a light dressing and you are all set. If you decide to make several soups, think about halving the recipes if your party is small. If you’re planning for a larger crowd, double the batches. You can always freeze any leftovers for an easy lunch or supper down the road.

Social Seen | LAKER EVENT

SW Virginia

Boat Show

With the 2010 boating season just a few months away, members of the Southwest Virginia Boat Dealers Association are gearing up for their annual exhibit of the latest in boats and related equipment. Slated for Feb. 26-28, the show will again fully occupy 75,000 square feet of the Roanoke Civic Center complex, including the Special Events Center. Eleven area boat dealers, plus a variety of other recreation and home-maintenance equipment and services providers, will participate. Show coordinator Darrell Ross said a full complement of shiny new boats and personal watercraft will be on display, along with great deals on 2009 leftovers. Plans also call for several RV dealers to join the show as outside exhibitors in the parking areas where boats were displayed before the civic center expansion. The biggest news for boat shoppers, according to Mike Ratcliff of Conrad Brothers’ Marine, is that the lower inventories dealers tend to carry during economic downturns don’t mean a limited selection for shoppers. "Respected manufacturers like Tracker and Four Winns have established programs that allow dealers to stock at affordable floor-plan levels but get additional or differently equipped models within as little as seven days from inventories held at the manufacturers," he said. As for new features, Ratcliff said its technology, technology and more technology for the 2010 show. Centurion, for example, is among the companies that have nearly eliminated mechanical dashboard switches with weatherproof LCDs utilizing touchscreen icons. A few touches also will automatically engage speed control and ballast settings for up to 20 preset rider profiles.

Inboard engines on all 2010 models are designed to meet tighter federal emission standards, Ratcliff added. According to SWVBDA president Virgil Naff, those looking for a new PWC will find that SeaDoo has expanded its IS line, pushing the new-last-year I-Brake and ride-softening suspension technologies down the price ladder to several additional models. The IS hull, a foot longer than that of previous SeaDoo models, is being used on the 2010 GTX, Wake Pro and RXT models, all of which come standard with the I-Brake system but without the shock-absorbing passenger deck. The more moderately priced SeaDoo GTI lineup is unchanged from last year, as is Kawasaki’s PWC offering. Yamaha has made some minor revisions to its lower-end models that include more nimble performance, a roomier "cockpit" for the driver, longer seats for riders, larger glove box, more convenient reversing lever and improved re-boarding platform. Naff said customers looking for a deal on a PWC need to buy early in the season, as all manufacturers have dropped their production rates and the rebates on left-over 2009 models are expiring as inventory diminishes. Boat show hours are Friday 1 to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7.50 for adults with children 12 and under free. Participating dealers include: Ace Marine, Conrad Brothers Marine, Hughes Marine Service, Magnum Boating Inc., Smith Mountain Boat and Tackle, Smith Mountain Yacht Club, Virgil Naff Lynchburg Kawasaki and SeaDoo, and Webster Marine Center.

WATERFRONT

WOMEN

The Waterfront Women isn’t a service club. It doesn’t exist to raise money for any specific charity or community effort. But that doesn’t mean its mission isn’t important, said Mandy Martin, who is serving her third term as president of the organization. “We're a social group that simply meets to visit with one another and enjoy a program and luncheon,” she said. “We usually have about 45 members show up to each meeting. We have a wide variety of programs to try to hit everyone's fancy, plus we get together for different functions like water aerobics or a movie group.” Some of the programs are informative or instructional and have included a speaker on women's health issues, a florist who taught the women how to make their own table centerpieces, and a representative from the Scruggs Rescue Squad who showed them how to perform CPR. Other times, programs are for entertainment, Martin said, citing a magic demonstration by lake resident Arnie Kropf as an example. Waterfront Women is a non-profit group, but club rules prevent members from donating money to one particular charity. Instead, the ladies give back to the community by paying $20 dues, which are applied toward gifts for the service group representatives who speak at their programs. “We pay for the speaker's lunch and then we give them a donation,” Martin said. “When Scruggs [Rescue Squad] came to show us how to do CPR, we gave them a donation. And we once had a speaker and dog come from St. Francis Service Dogs in Roanoke, so we gave them a gift also.” Martin said the group also organizes special events at different times throughout the year. In February, members plan to hold a game day, when they will play games such as “guess the baby picture” to get to know each other and break the ice between members. They also hold an annual holiday dinner-dance every December, she said.

Martin said one of the best parts of being a member has been the opportunity to form lasting friendships with other women. “They're so special to me,” she said. “At all of our meetings, I'm always the greeter at the door. I know everyone's name, and I want them all to feel special. I really love this group of ladies.” The group is comprised of women who are members of The Waterfront Country Club. It was formed in 1985 with 39 members. Membership is now up to about 85. The women meet every month except July for a program and luncheon.
