The 43rd annual Spring Home Show-Better Living Expo, sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association, will give homeowners the tools they need to improve their space – as

well as their health and well-being – with three days of vendor exhibits, product and service demonstrations, seminars and more. The Expo, the longest running and most established in the Roanoke region, will take place April 5-7 at the Salem Civic Center and feature a diverse assortment of home, garden and related industry professionals.

In addition, Window World will feature the Veterans Airlift Command Bike, built by Orange County Choppers and unveiled in February on the Discovery Channel. According to Roanokearea Window World owner Jamie Eller, the company uses the bike as an opportunity to draw attention to veterans who need assistance with transportation due to injuries. The Veterans Airlift Command is a volunteer organization through which a corporation will donate a private plane and a pilot to ﬂy vets anywhere they need to go. For example, said Eller, a veteran may need to be ﬁtted with prosthetics by a specialist out of the area. “What this does is give these guys dignity and reward them for serving us,” said Eller. In addition, “The Stinger,” a state-of-the-art concept car valued at $600,000 and built in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, will be featured

Fred Corbett, president and owner of South River Contracting along with his wife, Peggy, described the Spring Home Show as a great place to meet customers, both new and existing. “We get a lot of leads from the show, and a lot of times, we will give out tickets to the show so that we can see customers, check on them, and make sure they are satisﬁed,” he said. “It’s like a reunion.” Several years ago, Corbett said

a woman came by his booth and asked about a heat pump. She recently called him, explained he had been gracious to her at the show and she now had enough money for the new heat pump. South River got the business. “They say you plant seeds,” Corbett said, “and that’s what I did three years ago.” South River sells HVAC and water conditioning equipment as well as whole-house generators – a product that has deﬁnitely seen a rise in popularity following last summer’s derecho, he said.

Then visit the Spring Home ShowBetter Living Expo April 5-7 at the Salem Civic Center where Steven Katkowsky says he’ll prove it. The Santa Cruz, Calif.-based general contractor and author of “Danger Construction Zone - Your Guide to a Successful Remodeling Project” will give multiple presentations at the show, which is sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association. The charismatic Katkowsky, who has worked as a professional kitchen and bath designer for 45 years, now spends much of his time on the road, speaking at home shows and on cruise ships. Pete McKnight, president of the RRHBA, said this is just the second time the show, now in its 43rd year, has featured “celebrity-type talent.” Dr. Lori Verderame, a star on Discovery Channel’s “Auction Kings,” appeared at the organization’s Fall Home Show in 2012 and every seminar was packed, said McKnight, who hopes to have similar success with Katkowsky. “We’re always looking for homerelated things, and if he’s half as good

In fact, the focus of Katkowsky’s book, copies of which will be available for him to

Two of them - “Going in Style” and “Reincarnitchen of Your Small 9 x 10 Kitchen” - are about creating more space in the bathroom and kitchen, respectively, without constructing an expensive addition. “Most people can’t aﬀord that. These are the most important rooms in every home,” and the ones that give the biggest return on your investment, he said. “They are my two most popular shows.” Despite a recent trend in some parts of the country toward building larger homes, Katkowsky said 80 percent of bathrooms measure 5-by-8 feet and most kitchens are within 9-by-10 feet. Many people are surprised when

Katkowsky wasn’t willing to give away all of his secrets - “You have to come to my show to see all of the creative things that are available,” he said, - but he did share a few tips. In the bathroom, “you can move anything,” he said, as long as it’s not on a slab. Moving the toilet and the bathtub “is a little more expensive than leaving it where it is,” but it can free up space in the room. And “new tubs and toilets are not that expensive.” One of his favorite tricks, Katkowsky said, is to remove the drywall between two studs to create a ﬁnished recess, where storage cabinets or towel racks can be installed. “The before-and-after pictures are just incredible,” he said. “People actually gasp when they see them. It looks like you’re walking into a hotel room.” Katkowsky said he also has some “great, great baby-boomer ideas” for making bathrooms safer and easier to use as homeowners age. As for kitchens, he said, “I can make a one-person kitchen into a comfortable two-person kitchen. And, after putting everything back in, 30 percent of your cabinets will be empty and it will be more functional and easy to work in.” The key is in looking past the traditional “work triangle” pattern, Katkowsky explained. “I throw that

NIP AND TUCK Katkowsky’s third workshop is entitled “Nip and Tuck.” “It covers every room in the house,” he said. “Depending on your income, you can take a house and make it look like it’s been completely redone,” no matter what the age. “Almost everything I show people, they can do themselves.” Among the topics Katkowsky will cover include how to remove old “popcorn” ceiling plaster and how to dress up a room with crown moldings, better lighting and new ﬂooring, countertops and paint. He also will share information on new storage options for the kitchen and focus on ﬁreplaces. After each show, Katkowsky will have a question-and-answer period, so he advises visitors to bring a pen and paper so they can take notes. People can “ask anything they want,” he said. “They just can’t bring blueprints.” After Sunday’s show, Katkowsky will give away an electronic toilet seat to a member of the audience. If you’ve already started a remodeling project and it’s putting a strain on your relationship, Katkowsky can help with that, too. He has a degree in marriage counseling, he said, “and it’s really helped.”

out the window. You can move things around in ways you’re not aware of. I don’t want a client to be more than a step and a half or two steps from every working surface.”

Katkowsky tells them they can squeeze more storage space out of these already-cramped rooms. McKnight said, locally, the trend is toward smaller living spaces, such as patio homes, and many existing homes have small bathrooms. “There are a lot more regularsized homes than ‘McMansions’ here,” McKnight said, and “people are staying in their houses longer. They’re waiting for the market to turn around.” Katkowsky said remodeling projects are always a popular topic at home shows. “People are creatures of habit,” he said, explaining that most aren’t able to visualize the potential space-savings without the help of experienced designers like him. “I specialize in educating myself about new devices and gadgets.”

Creating curb appeal with economical, lowmaintenance plants and extending outdoor living spaces are just a few trends Southwest Virginia homeowners continue to ﬁnd worthy investments. STORY BY SARAH COX

arrett Baker, certified landscaper and landscape division manager at Valley Landscaping, said most of his clients are aware of the importance of curb appeal when it comes to their homes. However, he said that trend has given a significant nod toward economy in recent years. “There is a stronger sense of lowmaintenance and low-care plant materials being used, and a sense of value engineering for new landscape installation,” Baker said. Specifically, that refers to placement of trees to take advantage of shade, choosing plants that are economically priced and native and avoiding time-consuming perennial varieties such as roses. Native plants, ones that thrive in Southwest Virginia’s climate, require less watering and are hardier in terms of

surviving extreme winters or summers, Baker said. In addition, some of his clients are exploring the concept of edible gardens as well as backyard planters. Childress said, when renovating, he considers all of these factors along with planting for winter interest, mixing in evergreens and deciduous trees and amending the soil. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We produce our own organic leaf compost and add nutrients, then mix it with the native soil,â&#x20AC;? Childress explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good to keep some native soil, because a little bit of clay is good for moisture retention.â&#x20AC;? In addition, Childress suggested homeowners apply hardwood mulch every other year, which will break down and loosen up the hard clay. Doing so helps the root system and allows for proper drainage. Because of Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regulations on use of pesticides, companies are moving toward increased use of organic or eco-friendly fertilizers, weed controls and pesticides, said Childress, noting that his company is particularly vigilant when it comes to water runoff and possible contamination. Childress also considers Southwest Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s climate when seeking out cultivars and varieties of native plants that can provide more interest. He said he tries to incorporate more distinctive plants while, at the same time, considering the importance of sustainable landscaping. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a ton of plants coming on the market that have new colors, longer blooms and are hardier,â&#x20AC;? he said. Varsity Landscaping recently built an outdoor design space/showroom that provides customers ideas for what they can have installed to extend their living space to the outdoors. Beyond fancy outdoor kitchens with wood-burning pizza ovens, televisions and ďŹ re pits, Childress said there are more affordable ways to improve outdoor living. For example, decorative pavers are increasingly being used to construct patios, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are pre-manufactured concrete in different shapes, colors and textures. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a classic look that will last until the end of time if installed correctly,â&#x20AC;? he said, noting that the pavers are about the same cost as brick, but are hardier and offer more choices in terms of appearance.

ore and more, homebuyers are looking for ways to incorporate home technologies that increase the longterm value of their house but also provide convenience, safety and comfort. Today, energy management tops the list of desired features in new homes, according to the results of a recent consumer preference survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The survey polled more than 2,300 recent and prospective homebuyers about the features, products, amenities and layouts preferred in a new home. In the home technology features category, the number one choice among respondents was energy management at 61 percent. Also ranked highly in this category were multi-zone heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), lighting controls and home theaters.

According to the NAHB survey, three of the top five most-wanted technology features in the home technology features category — energy management, HVAC and lighting control — also provide energy-efficiency. Are the same trends being seen on the local level? “Absolutely,” said Eddie Fort, owner of PD&M General Contractors and chairman of the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association’s Green Building Committee. “Energy management, or what I prefer to call a systems approach, is becoming more popular. It’s a process of properly integrating several components of the house to achieve a specific [energy-efficient] goal.” By incorporating the following technologies, homeowners can save money on their utility bills: • Automated HVAC systems can maintain a more energy-efficient temperature while the

By incorporating technologies that help make your home operate more efﬁciently, ENERGY STAR estimates homeowners can save $200 to $400 annually on their energy bills. Fort said, for some, the savings can exceed $1,000 per year.

Dedicated Hall-of-Famer Fred Corbett, president/owner of South River Contracting of Roanoke, Inc., has found success both in business and baseball. The Class A contractor, who specializes in electrical, heating, cooling, plumbing, water treatment systems and whole house generators, has been a member of the RRHBA for 12 years, serving on numerous committees and the board of directors, including chairman of AAC in 2006. He also has earned the Spike Award for his recruitment eﬀorts and was Associate of the Year in 2002. Corbett also is well known around the region for his contribution to area baseball having been inducted into the Salem-Roanoke Regional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012. He was president of the Cave Spring National Little League for 12 years (currently serving as district administrator), has earned the Dedicated Volunteer of the Year Award by the Virginia Parks and Rec Society and has served on the Roanoke County Parks and Rec Commission since 2005. Corbett said he appreciates the RRHBA’s networking opportunities and commitment to a strong code of ethics, which he imparts in his work and in his volunteer positions. “I think we are giving customers a quality service at a fair price,” he said, adding that kids can learn the same lessons through sport. “Baseball teaches kids not only how to be good athletes, but also how to be a part of society and work together as a team to make things happen.”

Kristi Crutchfield, office manager of Superior Exterminating Company, is one of only two women in Virginia who have earned the designation of Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) by the Entomological Society of America. Crutchfield said she “fell in love with insects and their biology, studied that a lot, and right now, I do a lot of identifications at the office and, at times, competitors who have been known to stop in.” When Crutchfield began her job as a receptionist for Superior Exterminating in 1999, she said she thought exterminators just sprayed for insects. Now, she is well on her way to making a name for herself in the field. “The industry protects the health, property, food, safety and comfort of the public,” said Crutchfield, who also recently earned a Virginia public health certification, which gives her more credentials in the subfield of pests that cause public health problems such as mosquitoes, rodents and ticks. “The home is usually people’s largest investment, and protecting it and the environment is important. Our business continues to grow.” Crutchfield said. Superior Exterminating, which has locations in Roanoke and Christiansburg and employs 16 people, has been member of the RRHBA for about 43 years. Crutchfield pointed out that being a member has significantly helped the company’s growth. “We’ve developed a lot of relationships there, and the biggest benefit is the relationships, not just with builders but with other members,” she said.

Follow these guidelines for ďŹ nding and hiring a qualiďŹ ed builder or remodeler for your next home project. Â? Contact the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association for the names of member builders and remodelers. The RRHBA has a searchable database online at rrhba.com or you may call 540389-7135.

Â? Ask if you can see the builder/remodelerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, both completed and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials.

Â? Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.

Â? Do you feel you can easily communicate with the builder/ remodeler? Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home.

Â? Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes 3-5 years to establish a ďŹ nancially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.

Â? Make sure the builder/ remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract will beneďŹ t both of you. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner manual as well.

Â? Check out the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rating and if there have been any complaints ďŹ led with your local Better Business Bureau (bbb.org).

Â? Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/ remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!

Â? Make sure the builder/ remodeler has sufďŹ cient workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any constructionrelated accidents on your premises. Â? Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previous customers. If they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, beware. If they do, ask the customers if they would hire the builder/remodeler again.

Verify that your remodeler is an EPA Lead-Safe CertiďŹ ed Renovator if you are planning work in a pre-1978 home that will disturb more than six square feet of painted surfaces inside the home or 20 square feet on the exterior of the home.
