oes anyone else feel like this year has come and gone in the blink of an eye? It seems like only yesterday that we were gearing up for summer’s return, and now here we are nearing the end of 2019.
As we enter a time of reflection during the holidays, for what are you most thankful this year? In her latest installment of Dock Tale Hour, Kimberly Dalferes offers her list of what she’s grateful for, which led me to develop my own list. First, I’m thankful for you, our readers, for your comments, story suggestions and your travel photos throughout the year. Thank you to our advertisers for supporting Laker and keeping our publication free (Hint for the readers: please go support these advertisers!). Also in this issue, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Smith Mountain Arts Council and take a roadtrip to Rocky Mount for a tour of the homes featured on this year’s STEP Into Christmas Home Tour. The tour is a fundraiser for STEP Inc., a nonprofit that helps folks in our community.

From all of us at Laker, thank you for your support, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season! Laker Magazine got a sneak peek at two homes — the Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast (above), and the Lustron Home — that will be featured on the STEP Into Christmas Home Tour in December. Find out more about the tour on Page 60.

DIG THIS rOOT ASSASSIN AND MINI ROOT ASSASSIN SHOVELS H One look at the saw-toothed blade on the full-sized and Mini Root Assassin shovels, and you know these tools mean business. They can cut through turf, slicing through the grass’s thick mass of roots like a hot knife through soft butter. The pointed tip is designed to penetrate through tough soil like the heavy clay found in much of our region, also gnawing away at underground roots that interfere with the digging. Not only are they good digging shovels (although not so useful for edging, which requires a straight blade), they also can saw off branches. While it is more awkward to use a shovel for pruning, rather than a proper saw, it does work, saving a return to the toolshed (or garage) while you’re working and on an impulse decide you need to remove a nearby dead branch. Built of solid steel and with a comfortably wide handgrip made of a durable, slip-proof, reinforced rubber, both models are tools that you’ll pass on to your heirs. The Mini Root Assassin is as solidly built as its larger mate, but weighs much less. It is superb for smaller people, as well as for cutting deeply and cleanly in tight-fitting spaces without disturbing the surrounding landscape.

GARDENING GLOVES H Because eventually (or very soon if they’re cheap), gardening gloves wear out, a spare pair is always welcome. Avoid cotton gloves — they wear out too quickly — and choose ones with Velcro closings. Good quality brands include Blue Hawk, Wells Lamont and West Country Gloves. HAND PRUNING SHEARS H The best quality brand is Felco. The Swiss-made tools have strong, sharp blades that do not distort when cutting thick branches. The blades are made of hardened steel and all the parts that experience wear and tear are replaceable with their lifetime guarantee. The company makes different models for different uses and hand size. For example, the F-6 model is ideal for small hands. F-9 is designed for left-handed people and F-100 is designed for clipping roses. SMALL HAND SAW H Felco makes a high-quality folding hand saw that fits in a side pants pocket. The pull stroke pruning saw is made of high quality steel with rust-resistant chromed blades for clean, precise cuts.

garden Guide 2019
BUCOLIC BOOKS A good book that draws you in and engages your mind and spirit is always welcome. Here are two garden books that are well-written, as well as rich with practical advice.
“Succulents Simplified: Growing, Designing, and Crafting with 100 EasyCare Varieties”
“The Indestructible Houseplant: 200 Beautiful Plants that Everyone Can Grow”
By Debra Lee Baldwin
By Tovah Martin
Timber Press. 272 pages. Paperback. $16.95
Timber Press. 272 pages. Paperback. $16.95
H Succulents and cacti are not just for the desert. A surprising number of these plants are hardy here at Smith Mountain Lake. They are a seductive group of plants with an incredible range of shapes, textures and colors. Those features, plus their low-maintenance, drought-tolerant qualities make them great assets in the garden. In addition, they lend themselves to a myriad of craft projects.
H The title says it all. Martin presents 200 easy-care houseplants, describing the plants and explaining their care. She calls these houseplants “the botanical versions of the Marines.”
In her latest book, Baldwin, who is one of the world’s leading experts on succulents, as well as an accomplished artist, covers the basics for caring for and propagating this group of plants. It also includes a useful directory of 100 easy-care succulents. But the fun part for Laker gardeners who like to combine crafts with their love of plants is the middle section: “How-to Projects that Showcase Succulents.” Project highlights include: creating a living, vertical garden with succulents; a low-light dish arrangement; topping a pumpkin with succulents for a striking fall decoration; making succulentcovered earrings and hair clips; and building succulent topiary spheres. Each project includes a list of materials you’ll need, recommended plants for the project, directions for making it and care instructions. Excellent photographs complement the stepby-step descriptions and give you a pay-off picture of the completed project. Gardeners, man your craft stations!

The featured plants are arranged alphabetically from African violet to ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). If the latter is not a plant within your ken, you’re not alone. Martin writes, “I ignored ZZ until it walked into my life and after that it was sort of like a Great Dane — big, sleek, affable, and easy. I love that Zamioculcas zamiifolia takes up a generous chunk of real estate but doesn’t require an equally dedicated allotment of time.” Martin’s style is whimsical and amusing, making the book a delight to read. For example, she explains, “Many of the plants in this book could use a dusting off. You knew them way back when, and you are prone to dismiss them as part of the murky past, like bellbottoms and fondue.” Of African violets, she says, “It is so strongly linked with doilies and tea parties that many indoor gardeners figure it doesn’t have a future. But these plants survived indoor gardening’s dark ages intact… .” In another section, Martin shares, “I never thought I’d fall in love with a philodendron. …the plant just didn’t strike me as cohabitation material. I draw the line at scruffy when I invite plants into my home. A dress code isn’t necessary, and I’m totally willing to do rehab. But I don’t need one more mess in my life.” Martin is one of us. We can relate to her. “The Indestructible Houseplant” is an exceptional reference book, as well as one you’ll want to read cover to cover for the sheer pleasure of spending time in Martin’s excellent company.

STOCKING STUFFERS natural garden twine H Biodegradable jute twine is the only twine you should use in the garden. Other products are made of plastic, which never rots. tool sharpener H Sharp garden clippers and loppers are not only easier to use, but they also are healthier for the plants, as a sharp blade makes a clean slice. A good brand is the Speedy Sharp carbide knife sharpener. It’s an easy-to-use, compact device that fits in a pocket. In addition to garden tool blades, use this device to sharpen knives and scissors. The company website has a sharpening instruction video.
speedy sharp tecnu washes
poison ivy cleanser H It’s the oils in poison ivy that irritate the skin. The sooner you wash them off, the less likely you are to break out in a rash. The go-to brand for poison ivy washes is Tecnu. Opt for Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy and Oak Scrub. Even after the rash has appeared, it washes away urushiol, the toxic resin that causes the rash, allowing the skin to begin its natural healing process.

The road to Bethlehem was dusty, exhausting and dangerous, but the decree by Caesar Augustus required all citizens, including Joseph and his pregnant wife, Mary, to travel to Joseph’s birthplace to register and pay taxes. Visitors to Trinity Ecumenical Parish’s Living the Nativity on Dec. 6 and 7 will follow a representation of that route. It includes encounters with shepherds who speak of an angel’s amazing proclamation, the prophet who foretells the Savior’s birth, Caesar’s gruff soldiers who keep order in the marketplace and the innkeepers who, with all their rooms already taken, had only shelter in a stable to offer the weary couple.

How it Began in december of 2014, Trinity parishioner Les Daenzer was visiting his brother in their hometown of Frankentrost, Michigan. Les’s brother, Jerry, and late sister-in-law, Judy, had been involved with their church’s presentation of a living Nativity since its inception 20 years earlier. The production was held the weekend that Les was visiting, and he watched as the Christmas story was retold to more than 3,000 visitors. “I was impressed by how Immanuel Lutheran’s dramatic portrayal of Christ’s birth brought the meaning of the Christmas story alive,” Les recalled. “I knew it was something that would fit Trinity Ecumenical Parish’s passion for outreach ministry at Smith Mountain Lake.” After he returned home, Les described the event during a meeting of Trinity’s parish council. With their encouragement, he spread the idea among other church members, and planning for the church’s first Living the Nativity had begun.
A Vivid Portrayal now in its third year, the interactive Living the Nativity takes months to plan and prepare, days to set up and about 60 cast members, ranging from age 8 to 80, to participate. Guests at the event are led by a costumed guide who, while escorting them

Guests can warm by the fire of shepherds who, while tending their fields, marvel at a visit from an angel announcing the miraculous birth of a king. They will encounter a man who recounts Isaiah’s prophecy and foretells its significance to mankind. They also will be challenged by soldiers at checkpoints and approached by beggars outside a bustling marketplace where vendors sell their wares. guides pay the group’s taxes. Their stop at an inn in search of lodging leads them to a stable where they observe Mary and Joseph tending to a baby lying in a manger as Trinity Pastor Philip Bouknight’s recorded voice reflects on the Christmas Story. “At Trinity, we pray that this ministry will provide an opportunity for the lake community to reflect upon the many ways that Jesus’ birth gives them purpose, hope and new life,” Bouknight said. “We try to include something new ... something that adds to the realism ... to our portrayal each year,” said Lee Anne DeMonbreum, who has been helping as a cast member and as part of the planning and organizing team since its incep-
tion. “This year, there will be additional live animals, and we hope to have music reminiscent of the times in the expanded marketplace to help create the atmosphere there.” Like DeMonbreum, Nan and Dan Jones also have been helping since the event began. “The payback for all the effort is seeing the reactions of our guests,” Nan Jones said. “But our main purpose with Living the Nativity is outreach to others in the lake community who may experience this immersion in the Christmas story in a moving, memorable and meaningful new way. Perhaps this is really God at work showing his love through our portrayal of Christ’s birth.”
If You Go Living the Nativity Living the Nativity is an interactive experience for all ages. The journey is free and is handicappedaccessible. Each trek takes about 20 minutes, but visitors should allow extra time in case there is a wait during busy periods. Afterward, guests are invited to enjoy coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. new arrivals to Smith Mountain Lake are frequently lured to its shores by memories of water-soaked days and glorious sunsets. However, since 1989, the pleasures of the lake have included an opportunity for a life in the arts, with ever-broadening outlets for taking part in and enjoying artistic expression. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Smith Mountain Arts Council has been enriching the lives of residents and neighbors throughout Bedford, Franklin, Pittsylvania counties and beyond. “SMAC has really spread its wings and is involved in so many activities,” said Barb Nocera, the group’s current president. With an array of artistic outlets and a warm welcome to artists of all ages, abilities and levels of experience, the council offers a showcase for actors, musicians, painters, photographers, writers and singers.
Not-So-Humble Beginnings smac was founded in 1989 when the Liberty Singers became the Lakeside Singers, according to Karen DeBord,

SMAC’s vice president and leader of the singing group. DeBord moved to the lake area nearly eight years ago and has been involved with Lakeside Singers for seven of those years. “It’s just fun,” she said. “And it’s great to have these artistic outlets in retirement. When you work, you don’t have time.” The Lakeside Singers performs popular and traditional music. They ask members to make a three-month participation commitment, from March until June, culminating in a themed concert during the first week of June. In addition there is the SML Boomer Band — a subset of the Lakeside Singers —
that performs popular music. SMAC also supports performances of the B-Sharps and the Noteables, two groups that perform for residents in local nursing homes and senior living facilities.
Performance Art the lake players also formed around the same time as the Lakeside Singers. With a wealth of dramatic talent at the lake, the group performed three plays that first year: “Talley’s Folly” by Lanford Wilson, “Chapter Two” by Neil Simon and “Crimes of the Heart” by Beth Henley. These days, the Lake Players continue

to present a variety of performances, including play readings, musical revues and full-length plays, often to sold-out crowds. Earlier this summer, the troupe joined forces with the Lakeside Singers to present “That’s Entertainment,” a show that combined theatrics with familiar Broadway music.
Small-Setting Performances the coffeehouse series, a vital component in SMAC’s contributions to the lake’s culture, takes place in the Celebration Room, a performance venue at Downtown Moneta. An intimate setting, it has been the site of many SMAC productions featuring both local and outside performers. While she appreciates that the Coffeehouse has a home, Nocera said she wishes for greater capacity. “The challenge is that it only holds around 100 people, which limits the amount you can pay talent to come in,” she said. In addition to local productions, the Coffeehouse has hosted the all-female bluegrass band Canned Biskits, the New Habit Band and the lake’s own Panini Brothers Band.

Displaying the Arts just a year after its founding, SMAC hosted its first art show, which has grown steadily in entries over the past 30 years. “It takes the better part of two days to hang the pictures now,” Nocera said. Cash prizes are awarded for best in show, people’s choice, as well as first, second and third place in adult and student categories. Entries include oils, acrylics and watercolor paintings, mixed media works, plus other media, such as pastels, pencil, stained glass, sculpture and woodworking.
A Larger Stage in 1992, SMAC began inviting performers from farther afield to perform for enthusiastic audiences. David Stewart Wiley, the music director and conductor of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of Long Island, New York, has been a faithful contributor to the lake’s culture, performing concerts regularly with members of the Roanoke Symphony. “Some of my fondest memories and life

experiences have been centered around friendships at the lake,” he said. “In fact, when I was in Boston this summer, I was able to share with the Boston Pops my work with the movie score for ‘Lake Effects’ and my composition, ‘Concentric Circles.’ It’s wonderful to have these pieces being played on a national stage.” Wiley has also performed more intimate concerts at the lake, such as the “Home for the Holidays” performance last December and “For the Love of Music” concert in February, which featured local vocalists Philip and Tara Bouknight. In December, Wiley and his family will once again join the Bouknights for a holiday concert: “The Wiley/Bouknight Family Christmas” at 7 p.m. on Dec. 20 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish. “The Smith Mountain Arts Council is a great treasure for the region, and I have been so pleased to take part in it for the past 24 years,” Wiley said. “In fact, 202021 will be my 25th anniversary at the lake.

Art of the Written Word for nearly two decades, artists who create with words have found a home with the Lake Writers, which supports the literary arts for Smith Mountain Arts Council. A satellite chapter of the statewide Virginia Writers Club, the Lake Writers meets twice monthly to share information on publication opportunities, contests and writing resources. The group includes writers of
fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry, those whose work has been published and those who aspire to becoming published writers. During each meeting, members who wish to read from works in progress can receive constructive criticism from club members. The Lake Writers also presents programs to the community, such as writer Linda Kay Simmons’ Coffeehouse performance (with Kristi Mason) of an adaption of her novel, “Cahas Mountain,” and a group reading celebrating the release of the group’s latest anthology, “Encore: The Third Anthology of the Lake Writers.” An earlier collection, “Reflections on

from around the region. Within the past few years, photography enthusiasts have another outlet for pursuing their craft. SMAC approached John O’Connell, who had been a member of photography clubs in Bedford and Forest, to ask him to start the SML Photo Club. On the first Monday evening of every month at the Moneta/SML Library, photographers of all levels take part in workshops and learn from one another. The club, which now has around 100 members, is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about photography. At each meeting, members select a best photo of the month from photos submitted around an announced theme, and discuss a particular topic relating to composition, processing, lightroom techniques or other photographic elements. “I wanted to have a club I wanted to belong to,” O’Connell said. Rather than host a competitive gathering, “my thought was, we’ll talk about
350 members, up from 250 only five years ago. Part of that growth has come from a deeper awareness of the lake’s lively art scene, but some also has come from an expanding menu of options for becoming involved. One example of this growth is SMAC’s photography club. In 1995, SMAC hosted the first John Faber Memorial Photo Show and Contest. Faber, a nationally esteemed photojournalist whose 1960 book, “Great News Photos and the Stories Behind Them,” was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, retired to Smith Mountain Lake in 1985 with his wife, Trudy. A founder of the National Press Photographers Association and the Virginia News Photographers Association, Faber continued to photograph images of the lake through his retirement until his death in 1993. Held each April, the photo show continues to be popular, drawing casual, amateur and professional photographers
Smith Mountain Lake: 50th Anniversary Anthology,” commemorated the lake’s 50th anniversary and welcomed contributions from the lake area. Lake Writers member Larry Helms, who helped edit both volumes, noted the anthology’s emphasis on inclusion. “We made the … decision that everybody who submitted would have something published, because most people submitted several things,” he said. The group’s first anthology, “Voices from Smith Mountain Lake,” was published in 2013 as a way to highlight SMAC’s work in the community and contains poetry, essays, short stories and plays. Proceeds from the sales of the anthologies contribute to the SMAC annual scholarship fund.

Enduring Mission for all of the changes that SMAC has embraced in 30 years, its mission has not changed: bringing together the arts and the communities surrounding lake, fostering participation in and enjoyment of the visual, performing and literary arts with a commitment to educational outreach. Service lies at the heart of SMAC’s mission. Each year, the council awards two scholarships to high school students who are interested in the arts. “We are looking for a student who has demonstrated an interest in the arts,” said Judy Helms, chair of SMAC’s scholarship committee. “We have had winners who have been actresses, singers, musicians, artists, photographers, and for the first year since I’ve been doing this, this year we had a writer.”
The council awards scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per year for two years. “The applicants we’ve gotten have been so phenomenal. They humble us,” Helms said. “They’re impressive people.” SMAC also supports young musicians through the Junior Appalachian Musicians program. Geared toward students in fourth through ninth grades, the program aims to expose younger students to classic, “old-time Appalachian music,” according to Jim Mullens, program coordinator. Students in the JAM program begin weekly lessons each September and continue through the school year. Instruction is offered in guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin, regardless of the students’ ability to pay. The program offers the students an opportunity to perform before wider audiences, too. Earlier this year, students performed at the Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount as part of the Bill Monroe’s “Sons of Bluegrass” event and at
the HoustonFest bluegrass festival in Galax. Mullens said he is grateful for SMAC’s support. “They have bent over backwards for our program,” he said. “If you get discouraged, they will give you a voice of encouragement, and they have supported us financially, too. Without the arts council, our program couldn’t have survived … it’s a great organization and I’m lucky to be part of it.” Looking toward the future, SMAC is devoted to expanding. At a spring planning session, Nocera said the board made plans to increase its arts offerings for all ages, including more participatory and family offerings. Photo workshops for children, dance classes, writing with younger members of the community, pottery classes and graphic design are also being considered. “We’re in a good place,” Nocera said. “I think we’re poised to continue what the organization’s been doing as we move forward.”

THE ‘BASS CHUMPS’
In the 1980s, Rich Wilson (above) and Bud Kellerman (right), known to friends as the “Bass Chumps,” put their passion for fishing into print, publishing guides for rivers, lakes and reservoirs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia. Orders for their guide to Smith Mountain Lake began pouring in after a post on the Smith Mountain Lake Boating Facebook page in July.

ith more than 4,400 followers on the Smith Mountain Lake Boating Facebook page, a photo can generate lots of attention. That’s exactly what happened in July when Christopher Bechtler, the page’s administrator and manager of Crazy Horse Marina in Scruggs, posted a photo of a dog-eared, black-and-white book titled “Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia Fishing Structure Photo Guide: A Revealing Underwater Look.” “This map book is extremely cool, shows structures which were in the flood zone when the lake was formed. Does anybody else have a copy?” Bechtler asked. That July 24 post generated more than 130 likes and comments, including one with a link to where the guide could be purchased. Nearly a week later, Katie Kellerman, who lives in Maryland, helped solve the mystery about the book. Her father, Bud Kellerman, and uncle, Rich Wilson, who were nicknamed the Bass Chumps, had created the map in the mid-1980s. It was one of nearly two dozen that Kellerman and Wilson published and sold to area businesses. Bud Kellerman, now 76, and Wilson were not only relatives, but also best friends. In 1981, when the water level at Prettyboy Reservoir in their home state of Maryland was lowered by 25 feet, Kellerman and Wilson, a photographer, got the idea to walk the lake’s shoreline and photograph what had been hidden under the water for a half-century. “We walked around that whole lake, which is about 50 miles of shoreline,” Kellerman recalled. “It took about three or four weekends.” Through photographs, they documented where there were foundations, stumps and rocky points. “We came up with the idea of trying to put them in a book,” Kellerman said. At the time, Wilson worked at Universal Lithographers, a company that printed educational books. With their photos compiled, they piggybacked printing their book with another one, saving money on ink and costing them only the paper it was printed on. The 51-page book, “A Photographic Guide to Prettyboy’s Fishing Structure,” showcased points along the reservoir and gave users tips on where to fish based on what was beneath the water. “Due to the abnormal drawdown of the lake during the 1981-82 Winter, and the subsequent Spring recovery, the points should become very active for, perhaps,

SHORELINES On The Water
LAND BEFORE THE LAKE
The Smith Mountain Lake guide, created by Bud Kellerman and Rich Wilson, shows what the land used to look like, and where the lake’s borders are today. The top photo on the opposite page shows farm fields and groves of trees under Horseshoe Bend near the Smith Mountain dam. The bottom photos show the original course of the Roanoke River near what is today Carter’s Island and where trees were cleared to make the shoreline.

the next 2 or 3 years,” the guide noted. “Once the fish are taken and the water level remains at normal pool, look for the structured shorelines for substantially improved fishing.” The idea for using aerial photographs gained traction after the two took a trip to Lake Marburg in Pennsylvania, and Kellerman spotted a photograph of the site of the lake in a shop. A line had been drawn around that photo to illustrate the land before the lake came to be. “On the wall was an aerial photo of the area before the lake was built,” he said. “That was when I suggested putting an aerial map and a contour map together.” After doing some research, Kellerman discovered that aerial photographs were available through the Aerial Photography Field Office, a division of the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He called the office in Salt Lake City and spoke to Linda Cotter, who works in the office’s customer service division. “We told her what we wanted, and she kind of guided us,” he said. To obtain topographical maps, they contacted the U.S. Geological Survey. But there was a problem: The photographs and the maps weren’t the same scale. To solve that, Wilson placed his camera at one end of a room and a contour map on a board with tracks. He would slide the board to get the topo maps to the scale of the photos. “Then he would make a positive out of that,” Kellerman explained. “The film is clear, and the lines are black, so we would be able to put that positive over top of the aerial photograph.” The first photo map book they created was of Lake Anna, which took about three months to put together. “It wasn’t a business-business,” explained Kellerman, who was a patrolman for the Maryland State Police at the time. “I worked shift work, so we decided that this was just going to be a hobby.” Because fishing took them all over the Mid-Atlantic, Kellerman and Wilson created and published guides for rivers, lakes and reservoirs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia. They set up a website, as well as sold their maps to businesses. For the Smith Mountain Lake guide, which measures 11 inches by 16 ½ inches, they found photos of the area from 1959, before the dam was built. “We looked and, lo and behold, we got photographs just when they started construction,” Kellerman said. The two continued their hobby of fishing together and selling their guides until 2012 when they both developed health problems. Sadly, Wilson died of cancer the following year. “I was basically done with it,” Kellerman said of the business and fishing altogether after Wilson’s death. “There wasn’t anybody to go fishing with, and there

wasn’t anybody to do anything with. I let the business go and that was it.” Fast forward to this past July. While Kellerman was on vacation in upstate New York, he began receiving alerts that money was being deposited into his PayPal account that had been set up for the fishing guides. “We were in Cooperstown watching my grandson play ball, and all of a sudden, I started getting all these orders for Smith Mountain Lake,” he said, thinking at first it was a joke or an error. Instead, it was because of Bechtler’s post. After returning home from vacation, Katie Kellerman posted to the Facebook page: “The ‘business’ is still around, but our presence is not what it was. As one person stated, they got the map in 1985, so my dad is no spring chicken. I will be working with my father to get those already ordered shipped out. If anyone is still interested please let me know. In addition to SML, there are many other maps available, too many to list.” Since then, Katie Kellerman said she has been packing and shipping out the orders. “The maps have been sitting in our basement for years,” she said. “Once Uncle Rich died, he [Kellerman] stopped calling all the stores to see if they needed any more. But he would not get rid of the maps. He wasn’t ready to close that chapter.” With the renewed interest in the guides, Bud Kellerman said he’s glad that he didn’t get rid of them, although it makes him miss his longtime buddy and cousin. “It was fun, but it was fun with Rich,” he said. “Now this whole thing has been rejuvenated; I just wish Rich were here to see it.”

here is a treasure trove of historic houses in nearby Rocky Mount, and five of them will be decked out for the STEP Into Christmas Home Tour on Dec. 7. This will be the second annual tour benefiting STEP (Solutions That Empower People), a nonprofit that serves more than 3,500 Southwest Virginia residents in need each year. Before the homes were decorated for the holidays, Laker magazine took a sneak peek at two of them. Because this is a walking tour, the homes are all in close proximity on Claiborne Avenue and High Street, which is also the site of the historic cemetery where a costumed guide will tell stories about several Rocky Mount founders and other characters who are interred there.
The Claiborne House, built in 1895, was a single family home, then a rooming house, before becoming a bed and breakfast. It sits high on its lot, looking down toward what once was a valley but is now obstructed by tall trees across the street. The house has a three-sided wrap-around porch — 120 feet of it — inviting visitors to come and sit a spell in comfortable rockers under the porch’s Haint blue ceiling. The color, historically thought to ward off evil spirits, discourages birds from nesting in the decorative gingerbread at the top of the porch. The birds, it is said, mistake the blue for sky and decide this isn’t a protected place to build their nests. Matthew Vann and Amy Worley Vann, who’ve owned Claiborne House for a year and a half, love to show off the many unique elements of this old house. They’ve even had one guest with a historic connection: she was the original owners’ granddaughter. Now 92 years old, she had many vivid recollections about the home and the additions it’s had over the years. There are several fireplaces, with all the original mantels and woodwork around them. Overhead, there are interesting wooden-planked ceilings. Mahogany doors with beautiful leaded glass inserts lead into the library, the family room and the dining room, where the table is set awaiting breakfast guests. This table and a buffet complement the antique look of the house. “When we bought the house, it was completely empty. We bought all the furniture. It’s all repurposed, recycled or reused, and we shop locally,” Vann said. The owners’ main floor bedroom, bathroom and laundry room won’t be on the STEP Into Christmas tour, but visitors will see the main floor common areas, as well as the five guest bedrooms and baths plus the cottage, which features a guest bedroom and a bathroom, in a separate building out back. Also behind the house, which was built on a double city lot, there is an outdoor kitchen and a patio, a spacious fire pit area and a large flower garden. An area that was once an orchard has become a parking lot that connects to High Street, just behind Claiborne. Across High Street is the cemetery, which is included on the tour, and a few steps away from that is the Lustron house.

The Lustron House, a prefabricated, enameled steel house, was developed in the post-World War II era in response to the shortage of homes for returning soldiers. The home was invented by Carl Strandlund, a Chicago industrialist who had constructed prefabricated gas stations. Backed by government loans, the company set out to manufacture 15,000 homes in 1947 and 30,000 in 1948 at its Columbus, Ohio plant. One tractor-trailer transported all the numbered porcelain enamel-coated steel panels to the building site. Exterior pieces were 2 feet by 2 feet and interior sections were 2 feet by 8 feet; all could be assembled in just one week. Even the roof was made of this material. The houses sold for about 25% less than comparable conventional houses. The Lustron house was designed to be affordable, durable, built quickly and offer easy care — an owner would never have to paint it, inside or out. Built-in storage eliminated the need for a dresser, book shelves or a china cabinet. This gray Lustron home (also available in blue, yellow or tan) was built in 1949 in Rocky Mount for C.J. Davis Sr. for $9,750. After Davis died, his son inherited it. Ultimately, the house was purchased in 2014 by Richard and Teresa Harrell. They love restoring old things — a 1966 Ford truck and a ’63 VW had already received their attention — and decided to take on the Lustron house. The first thing they did was apply a coat of wax to it, just like a person would do for a just-purchased metal car. The house is built on a cement slab. The Harrells covered over the original asphalt tile flooring that was in disrepair with low-nap carpeting in a color similar to the tile. While they revamped the inefficient oil radiating heat system that was in the ceiling and added alternative heat, everything else in the house is original. There are space-saving, built-in cabinets, as well as sliding closet doors and pocket doors that help the 1,021 square feet accommodate two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room, a kitchen and a separate dining room. Everything is metal, and because steel walls did not take well to nails for hanging pictures, Lustron incorporated crown moldings from which pictures could be hung with wire. For those who have lived in a home from that era, walking through this home is like a trip down memory lane. Teresa Harrell has acquired various items, including bowls, dishes, kitchen canisters, a cake plate, a mixer and a bread box, that are reminiscent of the time period. There is an original stove with double oven and a replica of the original refrigerator. The sink is more modern because the original one, which was combined with a dish washer/washing machine, was missing when the Harrells bought the home. A new addition in the living room is the big screen TV, which will play a DVD about Lustron homes, titled “The House America was Waiting For.” Although the Lustron Corporation had great plans to dot the country with what were sometimes called “lunchbox houses,” it manufactured only 2,500 before going bankrupt in 1950, according to the website Ohio History Central. Numerous Lustron houses were constructed in Virginia, including 60 at the Marine Corps military base in Quantico. Just two of those still exist and now are used for storage. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Dock Tale Hour
By Kimberly Dalferes
When you always see room for improvement, it can be hard to appreciate how good things already are.
C
an i be honest here? Because we’ve been hanging out together on Dock Tale Hour for nearly five years, I feel we’ve made a connection. I hope by now we can relate to one another. As such, I’m assuming you won’t mind me sharing this small confession: I’m not always the best at being grateful. As the calendar passes into November, and we inch toward our collective Thanksgiving celebration, I always feel a bit malcontent. My natural cadence swings more toward forever aiming for something better. A flakier pie crust, a smaller waistline, a cleaner house — these are the longings that permeate my true being. Don’t get me wrong, for the most part I consider myself a welladjusted and happy person. I’m just not a particularly satisfied person. However, as I get older (not going to claim “and wiser” here — I actually seem to be moving backwards in this department), I’m sincerely trying to breathe deeply and appreciate the blessings, both large and small, that the universe bestows upon me. My few life annoyances are

small and petty compared to so many who are challenged every day with very real, life-altering problems and emergencies. Therefore, in the spirit of the gratitude season, I dig down into my soul and offer up a hearty attitude adjustment and my proclamation of thanks as follows. Thank you for high quality tequila, great friends and late nights spent out past my bedtime. Thank you for a husband who brings home flowers, just because. Thank you for well-made bras with straps that don’t fall off your shoulders, Spanx and low, soft lighting. Thank you for girlfriends who have seen me at my worst, but who still love me and are willing to post bail. Thank you for rainy days, puzzles and mesmerizing books that I can’t put down. Thank you for a son who keeps me honest (or at least tries to), calls me often, makes me laugh and gives me sage advice. Thank you for cats and dogs. I never thought I would ever be grateful for cats; seven years with Bonz has changed my prior bias against felines. Thank you for the Florida State Univer-
sity football team; win or lose, I love you for life. Go Noles! Thank you for garage sales, thrift shops, junkyards and roadside, “free to a good home” signs. My trash-to-treasure hunts bring me joy and a keen sense of accomplishment. Thank you for Monday mornings that begin with hot showers, strong coffee and synchronized traffic lights. Thank you for ’80s music and a playlist that rocks Sting, Prince, Bono and Madonna. Thank you for my parents still hanging here with me as I’ve now moved farther from 50 and closer to 60. It’s a luxury and a gift to grow old with those who brought you here. Thank you for Smith Mountain Lake. You have taught me to slow down, appreciate life and nature and remind me often that the world is indeed a beautiful place. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
