BRAND: SMITH / NAME: JOE SNYDER TITLE: CATEGORY MANAGER—GOGGLES / YEARS: 3 CURRENT TRENDS:

We see different trends at different price points and some overreaching or general trends. On the high end, lens interchangeability and mountain electronics, GPS, cameras, etcetera drive the feature set; often times this is combined with a rimless or minimalist aesthetic. At the mid price point, we are seeing a resurgence in the cylindrical lens goggle market. The simple design and aesthetic these types of goggles embraces is a less-is-more philosophy and speaks to certain consumer groups. In general, a trend we are seeing across all price points is the increase in size and silhouette of goggles. The oversized trend is starting to plateau, and the new standard or norm has changed.

YOUR INSPIRATION:

New ideas at Smith are driven with performance in mind. We are continually trying to improve the product and experience for the end user. We are users ourselves, and a lot of the ideas comes from that—just being out using the products and talking with our friends who are using the product. We also work with very talented graphic designers and artists. They are key in the creation of the colour pallet and strap graphics that result in a cohesive line collection.

ON THE HORIZON FOR YOUR BRAND:

New this season is the I/O 7 goggle. We set out to create an efficient interchangeable lens goggle that did not compromise the fit and functionality with bulky, heavy and rigid components. The result is a goggle that has unparalleled fit and comfort for all-day riding, and when conditions change, the refined lens-interchange system is quicker and easier, utilizing a single pivot quick-release lever. The I/O 7 also showcases two new technologies in Dual Axis outriggers and Goggle AirEvac. Both technologies are centred on the idea of improved integration and goggle functionality.

THE FUTURE OF GOGGLE DESIGN:

There are many niche consumers in the goggle market. What one consumer may think is awesome may not be appreciated by another. That is why we will see quite a bit of diversity with future goggle development. On one side of the spectrum, fully featured GPS and camera-enabled goggles will continue to innovate and surprise. On the other side of the spectrum, we will see a resurgence of the back-to-basics goggle. One thing all consumers do want is for their goggle to perform. With the adoption rate of helmets continuing to rise, I see consumers being drawn to goggles that are designed specifically with helmet use in mind. Not all goggles work well with helmets; at Smith, we will continue to focus our efforts in this area.
