Prime Salmon Fishing 2015

Introduction Welcome to our 2015 Prime Salmon Fishing Brochure. I am delighted to be able to introduce a wide offering of excellent beats across Scotland and the North of England. The common theme running through the beats in this brochure is that they are all excellent examples of their type, whether that be the big river fishing on the Lower Tay at Fishponds and Waulkmill, searching for that early spring fish at Upper North Wark on Tweed, fishing amongst the bluebells of May at Countess Park on the North Tyne, night fishing for the Nith’s famous sea trout at Blackwood and Rosehill, fishing in the shadow of Skiddaw on the Cumbrian Derwent or enjoying the spectacle of the prime Tweed beats in autumn. The 2014 season has been a challenge, theories abound to account for the apparent dearth of salmon, not just in UK rivers but also elsewhere in the North Atlantic. More locally it is certain that the long, hot, dry summer has not helped catches. Thankfully we salmon anglers are (have to be?) optimistic by nature and looking back over the years you remind yourself of the cyclical nature of salmon runs, indeed the record breaking season of 2010 was preceded by terrible catches in 2009. Across all of the beats within this brochure there have been many highlights this season - first (and last) fish caught, huge salmon and nerve tingling sea trout. Let’s hope that 2015 brings more of these magical moments.

Fished for two days, lovely beat, fantastic ghillies nothing was too much trouble, they helped the party with fly and line choice and in particular helped one of the party with casting, they found the right balance of helping, showing us the pools and lies whilst letting us fish without someone on your shoulder all day which suited us, they are a credit to the beat.

Lower Dryburgh- 4 Rods Middle Tweed Fishing, St. Boswells

Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 216.0

Sea Trout - 40.4

Lower Dryburgh is set in the most stunning of surroundings as the Tweed loops around the remains of Dryburgh Abbey, the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel and Dryburgh House parkland sweeping down to the river. The fishing runs from the highly productive Hotel Steps pool for approximately one mile to the end of the Long Stream about half a mile above Mertoun Bridge. The fishing boasts excellent fly water and a host of attractive streams and pools most of which give easy wading and which hold fish throughout spring, summer and autumn. The spacious hut with veranda is set overlooking the Brockies Hole and Gullet Stream pools and is equipped with running water, wc and electricity.

The ghillie at Lower Dryburgh, George Inglis (m: 07971 785230), is a Tweed icon and is sure to make your visit an enjoyable and productive one. Make sure you give George a call before you visit and he can advise you on the correct equipment to bring. Rods should meet at 9am at the hut.

Upper North Wark- 2 Rods Lower Tweed Fishing between Coldstream and Kelso

Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 211.2

Sea Trout - 15.2

Upper North Wark is an excellent lower Tweed beat with nearly one mile of prime Tweed water situated on the north (Scottish) bank between Kelso and Coldstream. The beat is particularly productive in mid to higher water. 2014 saw most beat catches drop but Upper North Wark still managed to increase their 5 year average. One fisher on the beat was fortunate enough to land the biggest Tweed salmon (as recorded by Fishpal) in October, weighing in at an estimated 35 pounds. Access to the fishing is directly into the car park from the main road (A698), about 2 miles on the right hand side after the pretty village of Birgham, going towards Coldstream.

The fishing hut is fully equipped with cooking, lighting, heating and toilet facilities. The beat has two traditional wooden boats used on the upper and lower pools. There can be exceptional fishing in the early part of the season. For those fishing the beat during the autumn we are delighted to offer a discounted rate should a similar number of days and rods be booked during the spring on this beat. The ghillie at Upper North Wark is Tam Donnelly (m: 07912 527612). Make sure you give Tam a call before you visit and he can advise you on the correct equipment to bring. Rods should meet at 9am at the hut.

We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Tam and Jock for their welcome, hospitality, knowledge and enthusiasm, and hard work in a bitter east wind resulting in 4 springers! Thanks lads and guess what we will be doing next year!”

Pedwell - 4 Rods Bottom Tweed Fishing at Norham, Berwick upon Tweed

Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 113

Sea Trout - 12.4

Pedwell provides approximately 1.5 miles of productive fishing on the English side of the river and is an excellent low water beat. Given prolonged periods of low water, fish are concentrated in this and the other lower Tweed beats and the sport can be frantic. A ghillie is provided between the four rods with fishing available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the season. There are two boats and although there is no fishing hut, rods can enjoy scenic picnics in the meadow below the Castle and the village of Norham is adjacent which has two very good pubs as well as a butcher’s shop selling some of the finest pies in the country (as well as an excellent range of fishing tackle and flies). In centuries past Pedwell and this part of the River Tweed formed the frontier between the warring English and Scots. The beat lies immediately above and below Norham Bridge with Norham Castle forming the historic backdrop to the lower pools.

The ghillie at Pedwell is Mel Wiggins (m: 07719 735725). Mel has been a boatman at Pedwell for many years and will ensure that rods are best placed to get the most out of their fishing. Make sure you give Mel a call before you visit and he can advise you on the correct equipment to bring. Rods should meet at the car park on the north side of Norham Bridge at 9am. The owner reserves the right to fish a rod on the poorer water and to fish with one rod after 5.30pm on odd occasions. Pedwell has joined a number of other beats on the lower and middle Tweed in providing facilities for boat fishing for disabled and elderly fishermen and women. Two boats specially adapted for wheelchairs are now available for booking with fishing. Details can be found on www.fishpal.com.

Mel was very helpful showing me the basics of the double spay cast even lending me his own tackle flies etc. to help me learn how to cast. He was very informative on the use of which lines and flies to use and where to use them. Thank you for making my day an enjoyable one, I am already planning my next visit.

Tweedhill - 4 Rods Bottom Tweed Fishing at Norham, Berwick upon Tweed

Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 217

Sea Trout - 13.6

Tweedhill is the bottom fishery on Tweed and the 2½ mile stretch finishes just above Paxton House. Like the other lower beats this stretch of the Tweed was historically a hostile territory. Now the 24 named pools offer excellent fly water with streams, riffles, glides and runs throughout its length. In low water conditions there is scarcely a better place to be on the entire river system. Being part tidal, fresh fish are brought into the beat twice in every 24 hours and provide magnificent sport. The ghillie at Tweedhill is Brian “Ginger” Palmer (m: 07770 964107). Brian’s enthusiasm and knowledge will make sure rods get the very best from their sport. Make sure you give Brian a call before you visit and he can advise you on the correct equipment to bring.

Please meet the Ghillie at 9am at the main hut. To reach the beat from Berwick cross the Tweed Bridge on the A1 bypass heading north and take the first left turn, which is the B6461, and after about 4 miles you will find the turn to Fishwick on the left. Turn into the Fishwick Road and follow the road south to the river. The owners reserve the right to fish two additional rods when conditions allow. These ‘owners’ rods will be restricted to fishing pools which will not disrupt the two main beats. Please note that the tides may interrupt fishing for short periods on the bottom beat, and to help with this the boundary between the two beats is sometimes adjusted.

I have fished Tweedhill for about 4 years now, always the same, safe wading, bonny place to fish, great fly water. I had the most incredible 4 days sport, mainly due to the advice given to me by Brian Palmer, his knowledge of his beat is invaluable, will be back asap.

Blackwood Estate - River Nith Fishings – 4-6 rods Auldgirth, 6 miles from Dumfries Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 96.8

Sea Trout - 40

The Blackwood Estate beat of the River Nith is still definitely a beat on the lower river and sea liced fish are often caught here, being only ten miles as the fish swim, from the tidal reaches in Dumfries. It extends to over two miles of double bank fishing plus some single bank at either end and is a real mix of runs that give good fishing in low water, plus holding water for higher water conditions. Wading is virtually all easy being on gravel banks on the inside of bends. For the 2015 season, the new owner is instigating a new letting arrangement of season rods for the first six months of the season, followed by day, half week and whole week rods from 1st September until the end of the season, dividing the stretch of water into two separate, 3 rod beats each fished on alternative days.

It should be noted that the owner reserves the right for one house rod to be lightly fished, but mostly during the period to the end of August. Spinning is allowed when the water is on or above the marker below the old bridge at 9.00am on each day. It is allowed in the Craigs pool and Forest Head pool, being the two deepest pools on the beat, at all heights of water due to the steepness of the banks making fly fishing very difficult. Plans are in place to create a new fishing hut above flood levels toward the middle of the beat and a WC is available already at Blackwood.

Fishing Prices 2015 Syndicate rods from 25th February to 30th August, restricted to ten non-transferable rods at £450 including VAT Daily rods at £60 including VAT per rod per day, on two beats being upper and lower, with a maximum of three rods per beat, with a 5% discount if three days are taken and a 10% discount if six days are taken together. If three rods are taken together for a half or full week, a further 5% discount is given. If fishing is taken, you will be offered the same fishing next season.

Rosehill -2 Rods Holywood, near Dumfries

Five year average Salmon/Grilse - 37.6

Sea Trout - 3.8

Rosehill is the first privately owned beat above the tidal limit of the Nith in Dumfries. It offers an exclusive double bank beat which is very easily approached from the A76 two miles out of Dumfries. The partially tree lined beat incorporates two streamy lengths of water with deeper, slower sections. Generally livestock are absent from the river banks but when cattle are present there is a fenced off enclosure for cars. The hut sits in an elevated position on top of the flood bank at the top of the beat but cars can be taken most of the way along the west bank as the whole beat is on gravel.

In low water the river is easily wadeable to fish the bottom part of the beat from the East bank down to the top of the Dumfries and Galloway owned Carnsalloch beat below which is well marked. A few weeks or half weeks are available for 2015 for two rods during the months of September to November.

Countess Park – 3 Rods North Tyne, Bellingham, Northumberland

Four year average Salmon/Grilse - 147

Sea Trout - 36.7

Countess Park Fishing on the North Tyne is a stunning stretch of salmon and sea trout water in the heart of Northumberland. The fishing lies downstream from Bellingham having a wonderful variety of runs, deep pools, glides and fast flowing water spread over three separate beats. Set on the edge of the Northumberland National Park the river runs through a mixture of woodlands and pasture and is accessed by private roads and tracks giving the most unspoilt environment to fish “England’s finest salmon river”. The Fishing on the Countess Park beats is available to let on a weekly basis for three rods. The fishing rotates between the three beats with rods fishing Countess Park on Monday and Wednesday, High and Lower Carry on Tuesday and Friday and Bridgeford on Thursday and Saturday. It should be noted that parts of the river are only suitable for fishermen experienced in wading.

Countess Park is the middle beat with 8 pools. Set in the Countess Park Woods it provides great tranquillity and seclusion. There is a great variety of fishing on the beat to appeal to all levels of experience. The fishing hut is truly one of the finest fishing huts in the country overlooking the river, full of nostalgia making any fisherman finish their lunch as quickly as possible. Higher and Lower Carry is the bottom of the three beats and has 11 pools. With a mixture of rapid water and gentle glides further down the beat there is plenty of fishing at all heights of water set with a stunning backdrop of bluebell carpeted woodland glades. There are two huts, one at Higher Carry and one at Lower Carry, which can be used by fishermen. Countess Park Fishing has a full time ghillie (Gerald Binovec m: 07732 955656 t: 01434 220035) who will be with you and your guests whilst you are fishing and able to give advice relating to fishing tackle appropriate to the conditions to assist you on the beat.

The fishing is fly only. Access to some parts of the fishing is by Estate tracks and a 4x4 vehicle would be useful. The Bridgeford Beat is fished from the south (right) bank with 6 pools including the pool at the junction with the River Rede. There is a fishing hut overlooking the Junction Pool which is available for use of those fishing the beat. As well as the main pools there is additional fishing between the pools when the river height is at its optimum adding appeal for both novice and experienced fishermen.

Countess Park Lodge is highly recommended to all fishermen providing accommodation overlooking the beat. The lodge sleeps 8 in four bedrooms which can be used as doubles or three rooms can be converted to twin; there is a kitchen, dining room, drawing room and sun room with stunning panoramic views downstream. In addition there is a rod room to the rear of the property ideal for drying clothing and wet dogs. Guests are welcome to make their own arrangements for catering or the Estate has a number of experienced contacts who would be in a position to discuss your requirements and offer whatever level of package is required for your party.

Fishing Regulations 1. The Ghillie’s decision is final in all matters including safety aspects. In conditions of high water/a rising river and/or high winds, it will be left for the Ghillie to decide if it is safe to use boats or to fish. 2. Under Health & Safety guidelines, owners are required to provide life jackets for all those fishing and to recommend their use. We have therefore provided the latest type of compact life jacket, which will not impair your ability to fish in comfort, and we strongly advise that you wear one when fishing. In the event that tenants decide not to make use of the lifejackets provided, tenants must sign the disclaimer option on the declaration form issued by the boatman before being permitted on the river. 3. No liability shall be incurred by the owners for any loss, damage or injury however caused to the angler or his guest and their property during the period of the let with or without any negligence on the part of the owners and their employees. 4. If you have any problems with your fishing, please tell the Ghillie straightaway. 5. Please remember that it is customary to give your Ghillie a tip at the end of your fishing and also that he gets the full details of any fish caught. 6. Payment for fishing must be made at the time of booking—otherwise we reserve the right to re-let. No reservation will be made without full payment. 7. No refunds will be given on fishing charges due to adverse weather or water conditions. 8. CANCELLATIONS—No refunds will be given unless we re-let when a cancellation charge will be made. 9. No sub-letting without our permission and then only by private arrangement and at the same prices and conditions. 10. Rods may not be shared on any one day without prior permission of the ghillie, which is often refused and should never be relied upon. 11. A Gyrodactylus Salaris Declaration must be signed before fishing.
