Elgin resident Darren "Smitty" Smith, 46, died suddenly after a maple tree near his home fell, striking him down, in the strong winds that swept through eastern Ontario during the severe storm event on Friday, Sept. 21. The same storm system resulted in three tornadoes in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, including one confirmed tornado in Calabogie. Smith is survived by his wife of 21 years, Diane, and his two teenaged children, Jason, 19, and Abby, 17 who, according to the GoFundMe page raising money for the family, was by his side as he passed away. "The devastation to Abby, his 19-year-old son Jason, his beloved wife Diane, and the entire tightknit Smith and Paddle families is beyond comprehension," the post on the Go-

FundMe page reads. The GoFundMe has been set up in an effort to ease the Darren Smith burden and allow the family to focus on healing. So far, as of Monday, Sept. 25, over $31,000 of the $50,000 goal has been raised. "Darren was a thoughtful and devoted father, who always put his family first," the GoFundMe page reads. "In addition to his home life and his long career with the City of Kingston, Darren donated countless hours of his time coaching youth hockey in his community. Darren was a fiercely loyal man who cherished his friends and always carved out time to be a listening ear or be there for anyone who needed anything repaired, built

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com A fundraiser has been set up to help a Smiths Falls family who lost everything in a house fire. The Smiths Falls Fire Department was called to the fire at 12 Florence St. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 9:45 p.m. Randy Normandin, Lt. Fire Prevention with the Smiths Falls Fire Department, reported that the fire was contained to the attic. However, he said, there was a lot of water damage. The ceiling in the kitchen collapsed.

Normandin confirmed that the tenants of the home did not have any insurance and that most of their belongings were lost. While on scene the next day, Normandin said the family's cat was found. Firefighters took the cat, placed it in the truck to

warm it up, gave it food and returned it to the family. As of Monday, Oct. 1, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. The estimated damage is pegged at about $250,000. According to the fundraising page set

up online, the family is in need of boys size 5 clothes and men's large tapered/jogging pants, and anything else that a five- and nine-year-old boy may want or need. To donate, visit: www.facebook.com/ donate/496875374122817/10156017391657104.

KRISTINE MACLAREN'S MEMORY LIVES ON AT SFDCI TERRY FOX RUN EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com A school in grief can mourn together. One person was top of mind for many at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute's (SFDCI) annual Terry Fox Run this year. Over the summer, the school's beloved music and arts teacher, Kristine MacLaren, passed away after battling a rare form of cancer. MacLaren, who most recently taught at SFDCI, was a music and arts teacher for more than two decades - impacting the many lives she touched each day. Her legacy lived on at the high school's Terry Fox Run held on Thursday, Sept. 27 - the first Terry Fox Run since MacLaren's passing. "I know a lot of seniors will be thinking of her today," said SFDCI Grade 12 student, Krissy Draper. Draper was in MacLaren's class the year she was diagnosed with cancer. "We thought nothing was wrong," she said of learning of the diagnosis. "We were shocked; we didn't know."

MacLaren was diagnosed in May 2017 with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer originating from smooth muscle. She passed away just over a year later. "I was just so shocked," said Draper of learning her former teacher had passed away. "She was one of my favourite teachers. She was a kind person, especially when you were going through a lot." The death of MacLaren also came as a surprise to Grade 12 student Emily Tym. "I thought she was getting better," she said. Tym had MacLaren as a teacher in both Grade 9 and 10. "I emailed her a couple of months before she passed away, saying I hoped to see her soon," she said. "But, I never got to see her again." "I think Kristine has touched the lives of so many students and community members," said SFDCI principal, Marsha McNair, on the day of the Terry Fox Run. "It's just natural today that people think of her." Currently, McNair said the

school is in conversation with the friends and family of MacLaren to find a way to keep her legacy alive. SFDCI teacher, Kristen Drouin, who knew MacLaren well, said in an emailed statement after the Terry Fox Run that she's found it challenging to express her thoughts and feeling about the great loss they've endured as a result of MacLaren's death. "I've struggled with what to say because I couldn't come up with something that I felt was adequate to express the profound sense of loss I feel," she said. It was on Saturday, when Drouin said she found the words while looking at her footprints in the soil as she rototilled her garden. "I realized that she has left her footprints on my heart and my life and the lives of countless others," she said. "Her life was rich and full with a loving family, her parents Joe and Pat as well as her devoted sister Michelle. Her husband Ray and their boys Connor and Brendan were the people she cherished the most. Drouin expressed that MacLaren was was thoughtful, caring, empathetic, and generous with her time and expertise, giving unconditional love to many. "If you were fortunate enough

"Although she is no longer making music at SFDCI in room 168, or leaving new footprints on our lives, it brings me peace to know she is no longer in pain or suffering from her battle with cancer." Drouin said she imagines their angel, K-Mac, is looking down up-

A Perth man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after members of the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a man with a weapon at a residence on Brock Street South in Perth on Sunday, Sept. 30 at approximately 3 a.m. Police say that upon arrival, officers established that three people had sustained serious injuries. Two women were transported by emergency medical services (EMS) to a local hospital and one adult male was air lifted to hospital by air ambulance outside of the area. The OPP sent "everybody that was working," said OPP Cons. David Bird, during a telephone interview on the morning of Monday, Oct. 1. "This would not be a single officer call." Bird later described the male's injuries as "major injuries," while the injuries of the two females were described as "serious injuries." When asked if the incident was a stabbing, Bird said that "I cannot confirm or deny that." The investigation is being conducted by the Lan-

ark County OPP Crime Unit, supported by East Region Forensic Identification Services Unit (FIS), and detectives from the East Region Regional Support Team (RST), under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). Bird confirmed that Hagerman and his team are based out of the OPP county headquarters on Highway 7 in Perth, during the investigation, which he said was "active and ongoing." The crime scene, reported to be near the intersection of Brock and Drummond Streets, is still considered "an active crime scene," said Bird. As a result of the investigation, Douglas Schuyler, 46, of Perth, has been arrested and charged with three counts of attempt to commit murder,

"Who Done It?" is a favourite phrase among mystery plays and novels. This play is no different. Written by Leslie Darbon, based on a classic work by the master of mystery, Agatha Christie, you will be wondering that very question up until the very last minutes! Until then, you will have reason to consider every character capable of the dirty deed except, perhaps, Ms. Marple. Director, Katharine Coleman, has an affinity for murder mysteries. They are what she reads in her down time and finds that putting them on as plays is entertaining, as well as challenging. She's created a following, who wait patiently for the mystery play to come along and she works hard to make sure that they are entertained to the best of her ability. The best way to do that, Coleman feels, is to get a strong cast, who can create defined characters who are capable of subtlety. There are so many clues that come out in what might seem like throw away lines, but you have to listen closely and really pay attention to figure them out. And even then, she's pretty confident that you won't have guessed correctly! Says Coleman "There are so many red herrings in this story that although it makes perfect sense that one character might have done it ... they didn't. That's what keeps it exciting!" The story is as follows: A murder is announced in the local paper that is supposed to

happen at the home of Miss Letty Blacklock (Donna Howard) for that day, Friday the 13th. Everyone assumes it's a joke and although there is a bit of apprehension leading up to the scheduled time of 6:30 p.m., it's not taken too seriously. Until the stranger, A Swiss Nationalist (Bernie O'Hara), does show up, with a gun. The lights go out, and the "bad guy" ends up dead. From there forward, motives for all sorts of things and long held secrets come out of the woodwork to confuse the audience, the characters and sometimes the actors, to tell you the truth. Also living with Miss Blacklock are her longtime companion Miss Bunner (Heddy Sorour), who is becoming forgetful with her history, Blacklock's niece and nephew Julia (Katharine Coleman) and Patrick (Rich Croteau) Simmons, as well as Phillipa Haymes (Wendy Monagle), a young lodger with secrets of her own. Nosy neighbours, Mrs. Sweetenham (Carell Allen) and her son Edmund (Lewis Koluk) seem to have fantastic timing, coming in whenever excitement is about to occur. And we can't forget Miss Blacklock's cook, Mitzi (Maria Fournier), a wom-

an with many stories to tell, few of them the truth. With the help of Insp. Craddock (Mike Adams), who would much rather be at a football match, than dealing with a houseful of difficult suspects, and Miss Marple (Kathy Lacasse), an iconic character from many Christie sto-

ries, described in the play as "quite a clever old busybody," the truth finally does come out, but not before Miss Marple is in some serious danger. You may be confused along the way, but the ending makes perfect sense! The show plays Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13 at 7:30

AN UNEASY TRADE VICTORY Well we won ... didn't we? Canada's new free trade deal with Mexico and the United States is, well, done, we can at least say that. The deal was reportedly reached just a few hours short of the clock striking midnight this past Sunday, Sept. 30. It could not have come at a more dicey time - less than 12 hours later, Quebecers were waking up and heading to the polls. You can't make this stuff up, folks. Parti QuĂŠbĂŠcois leader Jean-Francois Lisee wasted no time in posting a video online condemning the pact - essentially saying that Quebec's dairy farmers had been thrown under the bus in exchange for saving Ontario's auto industry. The new deal (NAFTA is dead, long live USMCA?) does do one important thing immediately - it avoids a prolonged trade war. There will be no Brexit moment here. Free trade will still cross both borders. But there is one important sticking point. The tariffs on steel are still, as of this writing, still on, which has a negative impact on local businesses, like Central Wire in Perth. Those tariffs need to come down, and soon. (Negotiations continue there.) Now, as for opening up the dairy industry, it's complicated. Yes, you may be able to get access to more American milk, and prices may go down. That's what competition does. (And somewhere, you just know that Maxime Bernier is smirking, eyes twinkling, looking at his old leader, Andrew Scheer, thinking, "I told you so!" It was dairy farmers, many from his own Quebec, that cost him the Conservative Party leadership to Scheer by a narrow margin.) And was Canada's stand on supply management, protecting Canadian farms, not a deal-breaker? Apparently not. But in Lanark County, we are home to cattle and dairy farming. These are family businesses. These are our neighbours. Can the family farm compete against big American agri-businesses, who already produce too much milk as it is? The feds are promising compensation - but to what amount? And will it be enough to save the family farm? And do the Americans still ply their dairy farmers with subsidies? On the other hand, the Ontario economy has been helped, knowing that the auto industry will now not close up shop and head back home to Detroit. Dealing with The Donald is not easy. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland deserves plaudits (and a well deserved few days off) having to negotiate a deal that was never going to please everyone, dealing with an American side representing a mercurial president. (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the deal "no easy feat." That's being diplomatic, sir.) There are also improved labour and environmental standards in the accord, and our cultural industries remain protected. The details are still to come. It may not be all things to all people - a relief to some, a headache to others. But we have a deal. And the threat of a job-killing trade war has lifted.

WHO WE ARE

VACATION MODE FOR A FEW WEEKS NEWFOUNDLAND HOSPITALITY AT ITS BEST, WRITES LAURIE WEIR LAURIE WEIR Column

I'm off for a few weeks to enjoy some much-needed time away before election night, so I won't be back in the office until then. We're heading east for a while to visit with some of Sweet Baby's siblings. Lexi will be at her favourite "spaw" and Mom is looking after Jack-O. It will be fun to meet his family, finally. He's the youngest of nine, so there are many people to meet. I'm a little in awe of this Newfoundland hospitality, though. I was budgeting for hotel accommodations and a car rental. "Don't be silly," Sweet Baby said. "We're staying with my sisters." "No way," I said. "We

can't impose like that. It's not right." "No babe," he said. "It's not right if we don't stay with them!" A phone conversation with one of his sisters confirmed that we are indeed, not staying at any hotel. OK, well that's one expense we won't incur. Awesome. "What about a car? We'll need to rent one," I said. "No, they have lots of cars," Sweet Baby said. "We can just borrow one." "You've got to be kidding me?" The last time I "borrowed" a car I wrapped it around a tree. That was a 1979 T-Bird my mother's and no, I haven't borrowed her car since 1982. That's a long time for my mother to hold a grudge, but I get it. "My sister has a Mustang," he said, a grin splitting his face. He knows that's my weakness. I have had - and wrecked! - a Mustang ... but I also have savoured and loved them. (I've had five: a 1966 [3-

speed coupe, hardtop red!], 1980, 1986, 1994 [wrecked], and a 1996.) I love them because we are the same age. "So borrowing a car won't be an issue?" "No, it won't be," he assured me. Sweet Baby also tells me that there is a cabin in the woods where we can hang out for a bit, but there is no electricity. Excellent, it will be a perfect vacation. I can't think of a better place to spend our first anniversary. Laurie Weir is the news editor for the Smiths Falls Record News and the Perth Courier. She and Sweet Baby are owned by a GSD, Lexi, and a rescue cat, Jack. She can be reached at ljweir@metroland.com but not until Oct. 22

2018 Final Tax Bills

The 2018 Final Tax Bills were mailed in June and included two installments; July 20th and September 21st. Failure to receive a tax bill in the mail does not excuse the taxpayer from the responsibility of payment, nor does it relieve the liability of penalty for late payment. When using online, telephone, or automated banking, it’s important to make payments at least 3 business days prior to the tax due date in order to meet payment deadlines. Please note that there is a drop off box beside the council entrance door for after hour payments.

A Friendly Reminder that Permit Approval is Required For:

√ Most building renovations & new construction, including decks/porches; √ Woodstove & fireplace installations, including outdoor solid fuel (wood burning) furnaces; √ Above and in-ground swimming pools - including inflatable pools - where the depth of the water at any point can exceed 0.45 m (18 inches); and √ Garden sheds over 108 sq. ft. whether on foundation or skids. WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? TOWN, HYDRO ONE REMOVE TWIN TREES FROM DAVIDSON STREET Timber! Well, not quite. It was certainly more methodical than that. On Friday, Sept. 14, a section of Davidson Street West between Abel and Brockville streets was closed down to traffic, as town workers removed a tree, cutting off sectionby-section, as the old "timber" method was not an option in a residential area beside the street. In an email exchange with this newspaper on Monday, Sept. 17, Troy Dunlop, director of public works and utilities for the Town of Smiths Falls, wrote that there were two trees located beside 150 Brockville St. W. "(A) resident asked for (a) review of the trees earlier this summer as significant branches had recently been falling on the roof of the home," wrote Dunlop. The town had an "independent arborist investigate the health of the trees. The recommendation of that arborist suggested that a removal was required."

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Hydro One cut down one of the trees as it was "right within the safety zone of the overhead primary feed." Town staff cut down the second tree "and did a cleanup for both sites." Dunlop added that "discussions are continuing with (the) owner on stump removals and tree replacements." Town hall does not yet have a price tag on the work, but internal town costs "would be town labour only on clean up, which is still ongoing. Hydro One tree removals are free of charge." Further to this, "all wood is disposed of at our compost site on Highway 43."

Some residents of Merrickville may have noticed an unpleasant odour in the areas surrounding the Merrickville Wastewater Treatment Facility, which is operated by the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) on behalf of the village. This odour has increased over the summer months due to the high heat and humidity we have experienced across most of Ontario. Please note that this odour is not a public health risk and will naturally improve with cooler weather. The odour comes from part of the wastewater treatment process. To upgrade older infrastructure, a new facility was built in 2011 that features a unique sewage treatment process called an ISAM (Integrated Surge Anoxic Mix). During this treatment solids (sludge) from the process are removed from the bottom of the primary tank and then further processed

by adding air to the sludge. It's this part of the process that unfortunately can lead to unpleasant odour - especially in hot, humid weather. OCWA and the village took primary steps early this past spring by covering one open tank with rubber mats. This resulted in a reduction of the odour. While we continue to look into additional alternatives for odour control we have contacted OCWA's process team to assist in developing a strategy. For now, to alleviate some of the odour, staff will be transferring sludge late at night and aerating overnight during cooler ambient temperatures. Again, please note this odour is not a public health risk and will naturally improve with cooler weather. If you have any further questions, please contact OCWA staff at 613-269-3247. ROTARY CLUB GIVES FREE DICTIONARIES TO GRADE 3S The Smiths Falls Rotary Club is giving a dictionary to every Grade 3 student in the town of Smiths Falls. This is part of the club's community involvement and advocacy to promote literacy. Rotary member and past club president Ken Graham had the children put their name in their new book and find the word "Rotary" - explaining that this was a "Word Wall" in the form of a book, their very own book. The teachers and students expressed their thanks and took the new books away with them. The Rotary Club is proud to have the motto Service Above Self and certainly enjoyed this outing. WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?

BECKWITH STREET BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION WON'T BE DONE UNTIL NOVEMBER

Evelyn Harford/Metroland

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com The construction on Smiths Falls' Beckwith Street bridge is proceeding on schedule - expecting to be wrapped up in November. The town's chief administrative officer, Malcolm Morris, on behalf of Troy Dunlop, the town's director of public works and utilities, gave an update about the construction at council's committee of the whole meeting on Monday, Aug. 27. "There have been days where there has been no activity," he said. "No one should be alarmed by that." Morris reported that it's not uncommon for there to be a lull in activity as the construction proceeds. "They have to peel away the layers to confirm what's underneath, that's what's happening right now," he said. This summer there have been lane closures so cranes can work on the construction. On Aug. 28, the southbound lanes were closed to allow the crane to put the bridge's

girders into place. The next step will be surface treatment. Morris said that will take a while, as the concrete will need to be poured and cured. Then, construction switches over to the east side. "We're still on track," he said. "The plan was to have it done by the end of November and there's no reason to believe it will not be done at the end of November. The weather certainly has been in our favour this summer." "As always, we said right at the beginning of this project that it wasn't going to be done until November," said Coun. Chris Cummings. "But I'm already getting calls saying, 'What's taking so long?'" Cummings explained that this is going to be a long construction period since it's a complex issue being tackled. His reminder to residents: "The bridge will not be done any time soon."

I don't know who coined the oft-uttered phrase "practice makes perfect?" I'm sure it applies in certain cases, but definitely not in some situations. Obviously there are things in life you can't practice for! On the other hand you can almost always prepare for a given set of circumstances. If you know how to prepare that is!

One good example is flying. There are a number of dos and don'ts to consider when you are planning to take to the air, especially if you are embarking on a long journey. My wife Kathleen retired recently and we are currently preparing for a European vacation with good friends and longtime travel companions. Because we're experienced travellers we have developed a routine which, when it comes to long distance travel, is vital. Start with lists of what you know you have to take with you. Passports, credit cards, foreign currency and any prescription medications should be kept on your person or in a readily accessible container, preferably your

handbag or carry-on case. Don't put prescription meds in checked baggage which travels in the aircraft cargo hold. If your bag(s) don't show up at the other end and they contain vital materials you will have a very bad start to your trip! Flying is the most important part of any long haul journey which makes it especially important that you plan what and how much to take with you and where to pack important items such as a change of clothes. Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that there is nothing worse than arriving overseas only to discover that your checked bags haven't followed you. I don't want

to alarm anyone. Lost luggage is a relatively rare occurrence. But it does happen which makes being prepared particularly important. To prevent such an occurrence, here's my advice. Kathy and I take carry-on bags large enough to hold a change of clothing (or two), along with extra socks and under garments. Make sure your carry-on also contains vital travel documents. Don't over pack! Mixing and matching items of clothing means you can diminish the load you originally intended to carry. Hauling heavy suitcases through airports, train stations, up and down staircases and elevators and along busy sidewalks

PERRY WEAGLE FOR COUNCIL Born & Raised in Smiths Falls

is murder. When flying we prefer to pre-book our seats so we don't get caught in the airline seat shuffle. Talk to you travel agent about the best available options. There's nothing wrong with being health conscious when you're flying either. Nobody wants to catch a cold, flu bug or another virus while jetting to their destination. Oddly the aircraft washroom isn't as dirty as the areas in and around your seat. Germaphobes will tell you that the tray table at your seat harbours more germs than any other part of the aircraft. Carry wipes (containing at least 62 per cent alcohol) and use them to sanitize any surface your hands are likely to con-

tact. To be totally honest the worst part of flying for me is airports. Some are better than others but in the post 9/11 world security checks and more security checks means the worst part of flying is actually getting to the aircraft. It's all very necessary of course. But in my experience actually boarding the plane and flying to your destination is usually the least problematic part of travel today. The Smiths Falls Community Theatre Presents

I would like with your help to work with council to manage the Town more efficiently for the Tax Payers. Smiths Falls is competing with 3 other neighbouring Towns for more Housing, Commercial and Industrial Taxes. We have not been doing very well for years. Smiths Falls residential taxes are 29% higher than Perth, 50% higher than Carleton Place and 60% higher than Kemptville. Perth Carleton Place Kemptville

$100,000.00 Assessment Property Taxes – Smiths Falls $1803.10 $1397.86 X 28.99% = $1803.23 $1200.12 X 50.24% = $1803.06 $1125.39 X 60.22% = $1803.09

There are many reasons for this and I would like to work with council if elected. The town has a very strong foundation for the future Thanks to Mayor Dennis Staples and his Council for coming up with The Strategic Plan. In just 12 years, 2002 to 2014 completed improvements between min. $120,000,000.00 and $144,000,000.00 costing the town 7.5% or 6.25% it was hard to get an exact figure. Either way this is $10,000,000.00 or $12,000,000.00 a year completed in improvements over 12 years with such a small percent of investment. IT IS NOW TIME TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE TAX PAYERS OF SMITHS FALLS.

insideottawavalley.com

What I want to work on is to pay off the debt in 5 years or less, making the Taxes and Water Bills frozen at the same rate as they are in 2018 till the debt is cleared. Once completed, adjust the Tax Rate to at least be in line with Perth, 30% less taxes. I have a formula I believe will accomplish this for Tax Payers. Perth learned this lesson over 50 years ago having managed their town with no debt for decades. I would like to work hard on the spending in Smiths Falls to put the Town in a better position. The Red Dress Project is part of a Canada-wide art installation that represents more than 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. The Healing Forest memorial is a large rock installation in the centre of Last Duel Park, with a National Healing Forest plaque. The Perth Healing Forest committee wishes to acknowledge the volunteer work of the following members: Mary Wright, Mireille LaPointe, Roberta Peets, Chris Luscombe-Mills, Sarah Hood, Francine Desjardins, Barb Cassidy and Maureen Bostock.

Riley. "The red dresses swing in the wind, each one representing a woman who is no longer around to wear it. People are missing from those dresses, they used to belong to someone. In a way, it is calling the spirits of these women and girls, and allowing us to speak for them." Riley said the colour red was chosen as a way to unite the spirit of the cause, as a chance to call them back to be among us and to hear their voices again. "Red represents their life's blood, which has been tragically spilled," Riley said.

The unveiling of the Healing Forest memorial was held Sept. 30 at Last Duel Park, in Perth. The event recognized the damage done to Indigenous children in residential schools, as well as missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. A variety of speakers told their personal stories of loss and hardship, and spoke about their healing journeys. Thomas Louttit, a Cree man from Moose Factory, was born "in the bush" and spent more than 10 years in the residential school system. He told his moving story, which detailed the abuse he endured as a child and the ultimate decision he made later in life to begin healing. "When they took me away, they didn't believe my mom that I was only five years old," said Louttit. It was 1953. He said the priest and RCMP officers who took him away threatened his mother and grandfather at the time, telling them they'd go to jail if they resisted. As a young child, he thought he was boarding a plane to go play somewhere new. Louttit began the memorial unveiling with an opening prayer, recited in his native Moose Cree dialect, which he was not allowed to speak in the residential school. He said having the

freedom to speak in his native tongue makes him proud. Flora Riley also spoke, a Métis woman, originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, who lost her sister, Daphne J. Brown, in 1970. Brown had been terribly beaten by her husband, Andrew Brown, to the point that she needed to be hospitalized. "After being in the hospital for a couple of days, on the day she was ready to go home, her husband went into her room with a 12-gauge shotgun, and he shot her in her hospital bed," said Riley. At the time of her murder, Brown was only 23 years old, and a mother of three young children. Riley has initiated the Red Dress Project in Smiths Falls, a unique way to recognize the absent Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who make up the population of under-investigated missing and murdered. "I decided to hang red dresses on the Birch tree in front of my home in Smiths Falls in her memory, and for all the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls." It will be an annual event, taking place on May 8, which was Brown's birthday. The Red Dress Project was created by Jaime Black, a Métis artist from Winnipeg, five years ago. "We want Canadians to never forget the lost lives of all the Indigenous women and girls," said

STORY OF JOAN OF ARC ETCHED IN HER MEMORY, MARY COOK RECALLS Mother was never at a loss when it came time to get the family together for a bit of fun. So we celebrated every holiday, even if we didn't have the remotest connection to it. That included Lincoln's birthday, St. John The Baptiste Day, the Twelfth of July. At this time of year, Mother was able to work around the sad story of Joan of Arc through the simple act of the burning of the fall leaves. Of course, it was called "The Burning of the Leaves Day," but I knew there would be a heavy emphasis on the Joan of Arc story, which caused me no end of grief. I hated the story I knew was

MARY COOK Column

coming with the burning of the leaves, but once we got that out of the way, we got down to the serious business of watching the mountain of leaves go up in smoke. It took us a period of several days, and sometimes most of a week for what we called "The Burning at the Stake Night." I called it The Burning of the Stake Night, which I thought was more humane, as I pictured the young French saint being tied to a stake and going up in flames. But we had to listen to the story before we actually lit the pile of leaves, which Emerson said took

all the fun out of the evening. To get ready, we raked mountains of leaves into a huge mound in the centre of the front yard. This always took place on a Saturday, and we had to have the pile well away from the barns and the old log house, or the whole place could go up in flames. Father also insisted we burn a small pile at a time, so that the flames wouldn't get out of hand. Once we got the Joan of Arc story out of the way, we would settle down to enjoy the spectacle before us. We each would have a long slim piece of green wood for what I considered the most fun of the entire evening. Mother would have placed a tin plate of sliced pieces of back bacon, on the seat of a kitchen chair, and these we threaded onto the stick, and with the bacon fat sizzling into the fire, we'd watch the pieces cook into a

golden brown ... crisp and delicious morsels to pop into our mouths when they were cool enough to eat. Over the evening we would go through a plate full of bacon pieces. It would take at least two hours to work through the mound of leaves, and then Mother would take her harmonica out of her apron pocket, and we'd all sing the songs we knew so well. Long after the last ember had died down, we would stay on the logs we had used as benches and watch Father take a pail and fill it from the watering trough and douse what was left of the burning leaves. For days our clothes would smell of burning leaves. We wouldn't be wearing our school clothes, so we didn't carry the odour off the farm. But I loved the smell of the bonfire, and I could never pass the back door where our clothes hung on a nail, with-

out pressing my nose into the folds of whatever I had worn the night we had burned the leaves. Father didn't think much of the effort we went to. In his day, he would tell us, the leaves were left where they had fallen. The snow would cover them over the winter, and grass would grow right on top of them. But he went along with yet another idea of Mother's that she brought to the farm at Northcote. My sister Audrey said to him, it was the line of least resistance. downe Avenue. From there, walk, bike or ride to meet us under the overpass, approximately 1 km from Carleton Junction. Shuttles will be made available as well. Submitted by the County of Lanark

DNE TOWNSHIP READIES FOR TWO RECYCLING BOX SYSTEM DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Why, yellow there! Get ready for two recycling bins, Drummond/North Elmsley - a new yellow bin to go along with your old blue bin. The township is looking to fall in line with their neighbours in Perth and Smiths Falls, starting the first week in November. "We are now single-stream," explained DNE public works manager Scott Cameron, during an interview in Reeve Aubrey Churchill's office on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Port Elmsley. "All of the recycling goes in one bin," now, said Cathie Green, a public works assistant. Get ready to see two recycling bins in

your garage or basement (or wherever you store your recycling bin): yellow and blue, with cardboard and fibres (e.g. paper) going into the blue bin, and containers (e.g. plastics) going into the yellow bin. "We need you (citizens) to divide it into your two bins," said Green, noting that recycling bin pickup would alternate - yellow bins one week, blue bins the next. Garbage pickup would continue to be weekly. (In an Aug. 24 email, Green wrote that "this is good news because it will clean up the recycling stream, save money for DNE residents, and preserve landfill space.) The new yellow boxes should be delivered by the municipality about the final week of October. The township office has already seen a brisk sale in their compost program.

Township Of Elizabethtown-Kitley Requires One (1) Equipment Operator/Labourer Contract Position December 3, 2018 to April 1, 2019 The Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley is seeking one (1) Snowplow Equipment Operator/Labourer from December 3, 2018 to April 30, 2019. The responsibilities of the position will include the operation of snowplow equipment which will require a minimum class of a DZ license and knowledge of road work, equipment operation and handling. Preferred candidates will have experience in a municipal and construction or similar work environment. Copies of the Job Description are available at the Township Office or on the Township’s web site at www.ektwp.ca

insideottawavalley.com

Qualified applicants are invited to submit a resume, outlining work history, relevant education and qualifications, in confidence, by 1:00 p.m. on October 18, 2018 to: Yvonne L. Robert Administrator-Clerk Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley 6544 New Dublin Road R.R. #2 Addison, ON K0E 1A0 E-mail: mail@ektwp.ca Telephone: 613-345-7480 We thank all applicants for their interest in applying for this position, but only those qualifying for an interview will be contacted.

"Compost sales are rolling out the door like crazy," said Cameron. Green commended residents for all of their buy-in when it comes to waste diversion and recycling: "Think globally, act locally. People really get that they can reduce," she said. "By composting, you can divert up to half of your garbage," from landfill. The whole initiative will cost about $35,000, though Green estimates that the township will recoup these costs within the first two years. (They are receiving money from the province to cover a third of the cost.) "We will have made back our investment and started making money," said Green, because the recycled paper, for example, made from DNE's recycled material created at the material recycling facility (MRF) will be of better quality, and therefore, of a higher value. With single-stream recycling, "the quality of paper ... has been decreasing," said Cameron. At the end of April, the township heard from their MRF in Renfrew that "we will not process single-stream material anymore," and that the costs of recycling per tonne would rise from $140 to $190 per tonne to process. At that point, the township's only other option was trucking their waste to Northumberland, and "it gets cost prohibitive," said Cameron. "It costs us a fortune," going that route.

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Cathie Green, public works assistant at the Drummond North Elmsley Township, pops out of an empty compost bin, a la Oscar the Grouch, in the township offices in Port Elmsley on Wednesday, Sept. 12. With this new two-box solution, "it's definitely going to save money, and environmentally it's a good move," said Green. After the interview, during a photo shoot with a blue recycling bin and a compost unit in the municipality's front hall, outside council chambers, Green noticed that someone had, with the best of intentions, thrown their Tim Hortons coffee cup into the blue recycling box. "It's not that you can't recycle a coffee cup," she said, fishing it out of the box. It is more a matter that the MRF will not accept it for recycling because it is not straight-up cardboard or paper. She advises people to check with their municipality if they have questions about what can and cannot be recycled.

Giant Tiger Stores Limited, the leading Canadian discount retailer, is proud to announce that its stateof-the-art distribution centre in Johnstown, Ont. is now fully operational. The centre, which has 300 full-time employees and counting, supports Giant Tiger's carefully planned growth strategy, which commits to opening 15 stores per year across Canada. "Transforming distribution is key to achieving our long-term goals and the Johnstown project is at the heart of it," said Thomas Haig, president and COO at Giant Tiger. "The improvements enable us to meet the needs of our expanding store count more efficiently, which means we are able to continue to maintain our commitment to low prices and delivering exceptional value to our customers." The distribution centre covers approximately

600,000 square feet and features the first Symbotic system in Canada, the latest in shipping and warehousing technology. Symbotic's innovative solution provides Giant Tiger with 210 autonomous robots that move freely up, down and across racks of inventory to deposit or retrieve cases at speeds up to 40 km/h. Large robotic arms, manufactured by Axium in Montreal, work in tandem to unpack inbound pallets and build outbound pallets based on a complex algorithm that results in denser, taller pallets. One of Giant Tiger's strengths is its short replenishment lead times from order placement to store delivery. Symbotic's full-case pick accuracy of 99.99 per cent and significant increase in productivity are a game-changer for the supply chain. Giant Tiger processes orders for 100 stores a day on aver-

age, and these can be received, picked, packed and shipped by the company's dedicated trucking fleet, all within 24 hours. In building the distribution centre and planning for future growth, Giant Tiger has enjoyed a strong working relationship with the local municipalities of EdwardsburgCardinal, the Town of Prescott and area residents. The Johnstown site was chosen for its optimal location on the Highway 401 corridor, which reduces the total annual transportation distance by 860,000 km, or more than $1 million in costs. The abundance of land and the way the centre was constructed will easily accommodate future expansion. Meanwhile, the interior and exterior design embodies Giant Tiger's friendly, people-first culture. From the gym to the games room to the modern lunch room where the

company hosts regular gatherings and holiday meals, the centre is designed to promote employee well-being. There is even an outdoor patio and apple orchard with a beautiful view overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. "Our warehouse staff love the space and amenities," said Mike Quinn, vice president, Warehousing and Distribution at Giant Tiger. "It's important that our people enjoy coming to work every day and feel valued as part of a community. We have an amazing team in place and we're ready to go full steam ahead."

Here are some fast facts about the new facility:

distribution centre is equivalent to a quarter of the amount of steel used to build the Eiffel Tower. • The warehouse is large enough to fit 450,000 people standing side by

side. This is over 100 times the entire population of the nearest town, Prescott. Submitted by Giant Tiger

sudoku

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
