WOMEN'S SHELTERS BENEFIT FROM RIDEAU RENDEZVOUS Continued from page 1

Women's riding clubs from across Canada came out, including members from Men's Ruin WRC who rode in from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Shelley Corbel, Melanie MacDonald and Courtney Kelland rode in memory of their friend, Jaxx. It cost more than $10,000 to have a Guinness representative present to oversee the burnout. The record, which saw 300 riders burning out simultaneously in 2015, was unfortunately not beat this year, but the riders sure made a statement with their smoke show. The event also took riders on a two-hour, 173 kilometre fundraising Charity Ride for Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program from Smiths Falls to Frontenac and back. The ride raised $1,420 for Jumpstart, which will enable 14 kids to play sports. Organizer John Maloney said more than 8,000 people came to town for the rally, which took over the Railway Museum with a

money while they're in town, because none of them packed a lunch, the campgrounds are full, the hotels are full ... it's really nice seeing this kind of event hap-

pen here," he said. The rally was sponsored by Pace Law Firm's motorcycle division, which helps riders when they've been in an accident. "Actually, they help anybody who's been in an accident," said Maloney, "and they're accident survivors themselves." Maloney said the community came together to support the event this year, with Chris Saumure offering up the Settlers Ridge Mall parking lot for the burnout contest, Cavanagh Construction donating about $10,000 worth of concrete, and Campbell's Trucking delivering picnic tables from the Lombardy Fairgrounds. Leona Davies from Dollz by Dezign charity motorcycle group was also a lead organizer of the event. "It's a great event put on by great people, it really didn't cost the town any money, and it raised money for charity," said Maloney. To learn more about the event, visit www.rideaurendezvous.ca

Evelyn Harford/Torstar Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow was under investigation by the Integrity Commissioner after five complaints were received about him allegedly stating false information on his Facebook page. "While we have observed that this decision has resulted in considerable public discourse on the issue, it is not within the integrity commissioner's jurisdiction to question decisions made by council," Fleming stated in his report. Fleming also reported that with his review, it indicates that the entirety of this complaint "is based on questions of fact or speculation. The complainant (who was not named) alleges that the mayor made several false/untrue statements with an intent to mislead the public. Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow said he was never concerned that the Integrity Commissioner would find any wrongdoings when in April, 2019, complaints were lodged against him for allegedly stating false claims on his social media platform. "I, and all of council, take our Code of Conduct and Oath of Office very seriously, and have done so since I was first elected in 2010," Pankow said in an email exchange with the Record News on Thursday, July 4. "I am satisfied with the report and its conclusion," Pankow said. According to the report by Tony Fleming, integrity commissioner, five separate complaints were filed against the mayor - two of which were without merit and not investigated. All complaints were regarding "false statements" made on his Facebook page (two of them), and on radio (a third complaint), contrary to the Code of Conduct. All were regarding the Beckwith Street project and dated January 16, March 14 and March 21. "I have made hundreds of statements as a member of council over the past eight and a half years and have always ensured the information I share and comments I make to be factual," Pankow said. The heart of the complaint revolved around a resolution to rescind the previous council's decision on the Beckwith Street re-

were made for the purpose of misleading the public." Pankow said he has not yet decided if he will continue to use his political platform to communicate with the public. "Some of the dialogue and comments on various Facebook pages and groups has become extremely negative and toxic," he said. "No matter how positive a subject may be on my page, they are almost always met with negative comments many which are completely unrelated. “Managing a page and keeping it relevant requires a fair amount of time and effort. However, I am concerned that in the absence of the facts that I am able to present, the misinformation and dialogue on too many threads becomes perceived as factual when it frequently does not represent the truth." On avoiding the complaint filed against him, Pankow said he wouldn't have done anything differently. "I have been a proponent of change and progress my entire time on council and I'm not surprised that pushing this agenda forward is met with opposition," he said. "I'm not going to let the possibility of future complaints impede my responsibility to do what I believe is best for our community. I have learned through this that we need to be prepared for the possibility of frivolous complaints. The $150 fee required to launch a complaint is not a barrier to unwarranted accusations and it is unfortunate that people disagreeing with a decision of this democratically-elected council are willing to cost taxpayers thousands of dollars in legal fees in their effort to erode the credibility of myself or any other member."

PORTLAND'S BRESEE HOUSE, FORMER TOWNSHIP GARAGE IN PHILLIPSVILLE SET FOR DEMOLITION LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Township of Rideau Lakes is looking to demolish two derelict buildings in Portland and Phillipsville soon. In an email with the Record News, Mayor Ari Hoogenboom said both the Bresee House in Portland, and the former township garage in Phillipsville will be demolished soon. "No demo date is set as we are soliciting quotes for both buildings and checking for asbestos and lead paint before we can get a final price," Hoogenboom confirmed. The Bresee home remains on the Gallagher property and has been abandoned and empty for many years, the mayor explained.

"It is not designated but is listed on our register as a place of interest," Hoogenboom said. The mayor explained that the township bought the entire property (a full block) over a year ago with the intent to take down this house and redevelop the property as a hub for Portland. "Planning for this has started but will continue with broad community consultation over the balance of this year," he said. "Many options exist including public uses (library administration building, community hall etc.) and private components (housing, commercial space etc.)." The fact that the Bresee House is set for demolition is not sitting well with Portland's Jennifer Trant. In an correspondence with this

newspaper, she said, "The property is listed as of heritage interest, and featured in the township-distributed Heritage Map and Walking Tour of Portland. It is not designated. Designated properties are somewhat more protected under the Heritage Act. Listed properties are supposed to have a 60-day waiting period for demolition, designed to allow for communities to offer alternative plans for preservation. The council waived its own waiting period in this regard." Trant added that the waiting period exists to allow the community to come together to save structures of historic interest. "Rideau Lakes Township is denying this right to those who might want to propose a future for Bresee House that respects its 175 year his-

tory," she wrote. Hoogenboom said the two-month waiting period was waived "as it was seen as not applicable and the township recently did a similar process for an owner of the Jubilee Block in Delta in order to expedite redevelopment." This, according to the mayor, is a township guideline for any properties listed as being of historical interest or heritage designation. "Only a small number of people have expressed concern with many more speaking and emailing me to thank council for not spending tax money on a structure that is in such poor shape," Hoogenboom said. "All of council did a tour of the building and they voted in favour of obtaining demolition quotes."

Laurie Weir/Torstar The Township of Rideau Lakes is looking to demolish the Bresee House in Portland, located at the corner of Water and St. Mary's streets. The 2019 budget included funding for the cleanup of the Bresee House property. "Moving quickly on this building and a second one in Philipsville that needs to come down will save considerable costs," said Hoogenboom, "as we will still be able to utilize our Portland landfill, which is scheduled to close at the end of July." PETER BRESEE HOUSE (From the walking tour brochure.) This home is situated on the corner of St. Mary's and Water streets in the village of Portland.

Built in the mid 1840s, the home was owned by Peter Bresee who emigrated from Vermont and was an early farmer in the area. He was later a store owner. The brown building across Water Street once housed his business. A man of many talents and interests, Bresee was involved in smithing black metal and trading timber. His successes are marked by his fine home of classical Georgian style with its symmetrical façade. Of note are the two eyebrow windows that keep watch over the Big Rideau. The mayor noted in an email trail, that decision to move forward has been made, "and we will endeavour to make any future redevelopment complementary to the appeal of the hamlet and sensitive to the community's heritage. Council is working hard to assist with the sale and preservation of the Anglican Church, which has far greater historical significance."

SMITHS FALLS HAIR DESIGN TEAM FUNDRAISES FOR PORTLAND LIVER RECIPIENT MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com On May 23, a second chance at life was given to Cheryl Bruyere of Portland at Toronto General Hospital where she was the recipient of a liver transplant. Both Cheryl and her daughter, Crystal Moore, said it was a day they would never forget. "My surgery went extremely well and it won't be hard to remember when it was because that was the night the Toronto Raptors won the (NBA) title," said Bruyere. "Her transplant was at 6 p.m. None of us will ever forget that date and time," said Moore. Moore said it was really hard to say when Bruyere started having problems with her liver. "Nothing was officially diagnosed until November 2018, just days after having her second knee replacement surgery," said

Moore. "She had come home from the hospital and one night she was unable to stand from a seated position and was oddly confused." Moore said they later learned both were a result of fluid buildup in her abdomen, which made it physically hard to stand due to the pain. Bruyere officially went on the liver transplant wait-list on May 4 and her short wait was related to how sick she was. Moore said getting on the wait-list was not easy. "The most bizarre and frustrating thing was continuously hearing from doctors that our mom was not sick enough to be on the list," said Moore. "Her health was declining but at a rate that was manageable with meds and frequent fluid drainings which was terrible, yet we also knew that others were worse off." When getting on the wait-list you receive a Model for End-Stage Liver Dis-

ease (MELD) score and Bruyere's was getting higher quickly with her deteriorating kidney function being one of the major factors in her score. MELD is a scoring system for assessing how severe the chronic liver disease is. Bruyere said being in the hospital was a big game changer for her. "Even though I was physically sick I was quite able to look after myself. Problem was I needed to be monitored so the hospital was the only option," said Bruyere. "It certainly disrupted our entire family's lives as they felt they needed to be visiting continuously." Moore said from the time Bruyere was diagnosed with liver disease, to the transplant was surreal. Bruyere said It was emotionally draining. "I went from the one who looked after everyone and everything to the one who needed to be looked after."

Mallory Day/Torstar Laurie Weir photo Left: Margot Welch, manager of Precision Hair Design and long-time friend to organ donor recipient Cheryl Bruyere is pictured with the donation jar. Right: Ken and Cheryl Bruyere of Portland are pictured here in this file photo. Cheryl was a recent recipient of a new liver, and her friend, Margo Welch, through Precision Hair Design, is hosting a fundraising hair cutting event on Aug. 9 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Brockville Street location (across from Settlers Ridge Mall). Bruyere was asked what it's like having someone else's liver in her body. "It's not really something I think about," she said. "I am more concentrated on doing what I'm supposed to do so I have no rejection problems. The medication regiment is a little overwhelming but you do what you have to do." Precision Hair Design manager and longtime friend of Bruyere's, Margo Welch, is hosting a fundraising event on Aug. 9. Every year her employer does a fundraiser for an ongoing cause and this year they've chose the organ donor awareness for Bruyere. Welch said all donations made from the fundraiser will go to Bruyere. "All (six) stylists are giving up their time from 12 to 6

p.m. Women's cuts are $20, men's cuts are $10 and all the donations go to Cheryl," said Welch. "There's a donation jar that I have going now and also I'm doing a raffle table from local businesses. Everything's 100 per cent back to the recipient." Welch wanted to help her friend financially. "It's a long road for her, she's a full-time worker too so there's a lot of expense because a lot of her medications aren't covered so that's why she was chosen" for this fundraising effort. Bruyere said how things like this show the true beauty of living in a small community. "The support both financially and emotionally that our family has received from the community, our workplaces, our friends and

even acquaintances of family members, I don't even know has been overwhelming. It has sure been a humbling experience for me." One thing Bruyere said that's come out of her situation is the importance of organ donation. She said most people think about it but don't say anything about it. "I've had many friends say since I got sick they are much more aware of the importance of organ donating." Precision Hair Design also supports Perth's Adrianna Foster, who received her second heart in the spring. Andrianna's Army highlights the need for organ donation awareness. JUNE'S GARDEN OF THE MONTH

IT'S SUMMER HIT THE BEACH It's officially summer and time to get outside and enjoy the balmy weather after a long winter and what seemed like a non-existent spring. Many families flocked to Leeds, Grenville and Lanark beaches last week during the first heat wave of the summer and they're a great way to cool off. We can all remember eagerly anticipating the last day of school and kicking off the summer with lazy days spent relaxing in the local creek or pond. While there's always a risk of swimming in untreated waters at area beaches, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is looking out for residents. The health unit performs weekly testing of the water at all beaches during the season until Aug. 31 to ensure it's safe for swimming. The beaches being tested this year include Almonte Beach, Dalhousie Lake, Centennial Beach, Riverside Beach, Lanark Beach, Pakenham Beach, Rideau Ferry Yacht Club, Robertson Lake Beach, Smiths Falls (junior and senior), in Lanark County. In Leeds and Grenville, Bellamy Park, Merrickville, Westport Sand Lake, Portland Campbell Street Beach and Foley Mountain Beach will be monitored. The health unit is all about public education to ensure the health of citizens in the tri-counties. Five samples from each beach will be collected each week and analyzed for E. coli bacteria. If they present more than 200 E. coli (the bathing water standard), a warning will be posted. They have committed to posting updates each Friday morning by 9:30 a.m., which are available at healthunit.org. High E. coli levels are normally seen after heavy rains due to surface water run-off or fecal material from birds and wildlife. E. coli has the potential to increase eye, ear, nose and throat infections, as well as stomach bugs. Any beaches presenting high levels of the bacteria will remain on the unsafe for swimming list until the counts have lowered. But the health unit isn't just checking for E. coli. They'll also be conducting tests for any blue-green algae blooms, spills or other safety issues that could impact the health of swimmers at those beaches. When visiting local beaches this summer, you should always evaluate the weather conditions to ensure it's safe to swim. If the water is cloudy, following high winds or a heavy rainfall, avoid it. If there is a lot of bird feces on the beach, there's also a chance that could infiltrate the water. Use common sense and be safe at the beach this summer. And don't forget the sunscreen!

For the next 12 months, I'll be the person you can call for stories happening in the Smiths Falls area. My name is Mallory Day and I'm the new reporter here, replacing Evelyn Harford while she's on maternity leave for the next year. I'm 23 years old and a graduate from the journalism program at Loyalist College in 2017 where I learned several multimedia, broadcasting and social media skills throughout the threeyear program. I grew up in the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands where I cur-

Some people might remember me as part of the summer street team for Big FM and Fresh Radio in Kingston last summer where I covered several events, including the Taylor Hall Kids For Kids ball hockey tournament where I met the NHL players, Hall and Jordan Eberle. I've been to many different types of events and have covered events from fun runs to car shows and even the Kingston Buskers Rendezvous last July. I'm a big sports fan and have been involved in them since I could walk. I've played a variety of sports such as hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, ringette, and volleyball. I'm also a figure skating coach and have coached in Picton, Gananoque and Kingston since 2014. Dirt track racing at the Brockville Ontario Speedway is probably my favourite way to spend a Saturday night. I've been going there since I was a kid. My dad used to race there until a bad accident

in 2014 ended his racing career. Currently my boyfriend and many of my friends race there. I love writing sports stories, especially when it comes to local, up-andcoming athletes. I enjoy telling people's stories throughout the community I cover. During my time here I'll be covering town council as well as those spicy and juicy stories throughout Smiths Falls and the region, including Perth, Kemptville and all parts in between. My door is always open to suggestions and helpful tips along the way as I complete this new journey with the Smiths Falls newspaper. I look forward to getting to know the community better and being a part of this beautiful town for the next 12 months. NEWS

ANDISON INDUCTED TO SPORTS HALL OF FAME Bailey Andison of Smiths Falls was one of many to be inducted to the Smiths Falls Sports Hall of Fame on June 23. The Smiths Falls swimmer attends the University of Indiana. Andison wasn't at the induction, as she was swimming at a meet in California that same weekend preparing for the PanAn Games in Lima, Peru next month. She finished first and second in the 200 IM and 400 IM re-

spectively, having the satisfaction of beating the NAA champion in winning the 200 IM. and seems to be satisfied with her performance so far. Andison is a highly decorated swimmer. In April, she helped propel the university's swim team at the 2019 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday (Feb. 23) at the campus' Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center - winning the title

for the sixth time, their first since 2011. She's a fourth-year swimmer, spending the first three years of her university career at the University of Denver. Her accomplishments there, included, but were not limited to: • The 2016 - 17 Summit League women's swimmer of the year reached the finals in the six events she participated in during last year's Summit League championships in Indianapolis. She

won gold medals in all six events. • Finished fifth at the NCAA championships in the 400 IM in the D.U. record time of 4:03:09, and 13th in the 200 IM in 1:55:21 to earn a pair of all-American honours. • Represented Canada at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan, where she made the top 10 in the 200IM. • Represented Ontario, swimming in the British Nationals (August 2016) to a gold medal in the 400IM, and a silver medal in the 200IM.

HENDERSON FAMILY MAKES SHOPPING FUN ON RUSSELL STREET, SMITHS FALLS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Brooke and Brittany Henderson are home from the LPGA Tour this week and made a special trip to a ceramic shop in Smiths Falls with their parents, Dave and Darlene on Thursday, July 4. Store owner, Gene Amell of Simply Ceramics Plus, said the family came in for a quick visit after making a transaction to purchase some moulds the Hendersons owned. “Dave sold me some moulds from his father’s hobby shop,” Amell said, who is a big fan of the family, and the Smiths Falls golfing sensation, Brooke, and sister/caddie Brittany. “It was nice to see them all come in together, and nice to see a father appreciate his daughter(s) like I do mine,” he said. Clem and his wife Beverley Henderson owned and operated a popular hobby shop in Smiths Falls for

They say the sun never stops shining, just sometimes we can’t see it. They say the wind never stops blowing, we just don’t always feel it. They say the stars are always bright, but the clouds just cover them up. They say time heals the hurt. They say time makes it easier. They say the first’s are always the hardest.

Happy 90th Birthday Mom! Love you with all my heart! Thank you for always being there for me. I’m so blessed to have such a wonderful Mom! Your loving daughter, Trudy Your mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well, she’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space... not even when gone with love to God’s everlasting heaven

CONTRIBUTED

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SMITHS FALLS MEN'S TWILIGHT LEAGUE ROLLS THE DICE The July 4 edition of the Smith Falls Golf and Country Club Thursday Night Men's Twilight golf was sponsored by Top Shelf Distillery. The format was "Gamble Scramble," with teams rolling a dice to see which tee shot they'd take, then playing the best shots through the rest of the hole. Rick Murphy, Gerry Simmons, Mel Thompson, John Strickland, and Ed Strickland rolled well, posting the best score on the front nine. Graham Merpaw, Dave Lawrence,

Cam Burchill, Mike Patti, and Colin Brown also beat the House, claiming victory on the back. The Roosteraunt closest to the pin prizes went to Rick Wiseman and Rocky Rotundo for their tee shots on holes eight and 14. Mark Brus and John Strickland took home the Burns Jewellers gift certificates for the best second shots on holes 10 and six. John didn't feel like putting, so he put his shot right in the cup. Nice eagle! The Town and Country Chrysler longest drives were sent into orbit by Mike McKenney and Eric Dagg on holes one and 11. Rob Dales won the Milano's Pizza prize for a great tee shot on hole three, and the Valley Custom Cutting gift certificate went to Bob Bresee for his beauty on hole 16. The fabulous test of skill was performed by Art Rent and John McKenney; a moving a cappella version of The Star-Spangled Ban-

ner honouring our neighbours to the south. The Twilight cart prize went to Curry Wood, and this week's Rocky's Road Rash ball went to Paul Cadeau. He'll try for a hole in one to win the $15,000 Hunt and Dopson prize at the Closing. Good luck! Last week's Obsessed With Golf trivia question: Jack Nicklaus's last career victory was the 1986 Masters; who among this group also won the Masters for his last victory? Answer: A. Charles Coody. This week's question: Which U.S. Open Champion was asked by the USGA to leave collateral for the trophy because they were afraid that the champion would pawn the trophy for a victory celebration at a saloon? A. Walter Hagen B. Lloyd Mangrum C. John McDermott D. Fred Herd See next week's article for the answer.
