CAMP IS MORE THAN BASKETBALL MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com For over a decade, a basketball camp has been held at the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute to help families who can't afford to send their children to camp. Former camper and now di-
rector of the camp, Turner Onion, said he's been a part of the camp for a decade. He's been coming to the camp since he was in Grade 3, then became a volunteer and guest coach. Now he's been running the camp for the last three years. "I've grown up with this camp
and I've followed it," said Onion. "At the end of the day I see every kid go home tired, well fed and with smiles on their faces." Onion enjoys seeing happiness and a sense of accomplishment by the kids at the end of each day. During the camp participants
are split into six groups to learn drills and fun games with their volunteer coaches. Onion said since he's been running the camp, he's had campers who have never played basketball before go on to play on their school teams and teams in the community. "The campers will get involved in basketball teams throughout the year," said Onion. "Some go to See ENJOYING, page 4

CANNABIS RETAIL STORES A POSSIBILITY FOR SMITHS FALLS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Town of Smiths Falls may soon have a cannabis storefront. The provincial government has announced that the recent round of cannabis licences will be held on Aug. 20. There will be 42 licences awarded through a lottery system. During a meeting of Smiths Falls town council July 15, chief administrative officer Malcolm Morris recommended in his report to council to approve the sites for retail sales of legal cannabis within the town. As in the first lottery, rules set a maximum number of stores per region; the east has been allocated seven store licences. Prospective retailers must meet pre-qualification criteria including access to appropriate retail space and capital to apply. The lottery will take place Aug. 20 and results will be available within 24 hours. All municipalities that did not opt out of cannabis retail are eligible, regardless of population.

"You've got a lot of tourists coming through on the waterfront," said McGuire. "There's a big difference between sale and consumption. It's the same as the LCBO, nobody's afraid to walk past the LCBO, I don't see why you should be with a cannabis store." The province has outlined that cannabis retail outlets can't be located within 150 metres from the perimeter of a school. The buffer zones affect schools, parks and recreation and libraries.

Parent Jennifer Strickland has been volunteering at the camp for seven years and has three children who attend the camp. Her oldest son is a volunteer, and was a previous camper. Her second son is in his last year as a camper and her daughter is in her second year at the camp. Strickland said thanks to the basketball camp, her daughter joined the Smiths Falls Storm basketball team as a novice. "They competed throughout the region and this was the initial introduction into basketball and what grew her love for the game," Strickland said of the Storm club. Strickland said she heard about the camp from Smiths Falls Free Methodist Church from senior Pastor Angel Valentin who founded the camp before moving onto retirement. Strickland also said some parents haven't been able to afford the camp. "It's really nice to see

Not only does the camp teach basketball skills and drills, but it also teaches life lessons. "With this camp you want to build them as people and then basketball just comes in, that's the way we're teaching them," said Onion. "But there's so many other life lessons that come along with basketball and that's kind of what this camp focuses on." Parent and volunteer John Valentin (Angel's son) said at the end of the day, the campers chat
with Onion and the rest of the team to talk about challenges, including bullying. A coping skill taught at the camp was to make new kids feel included in school. "In the past I know they've talked about how to respond to a bully," John Valentin said. "And if a new friend comes to school, how to make them feel welcome or just about awareness and reputation." Onion said any money made from the camp is returned for the following year to help with costs like prizes. "We're providing lunches for this (year) so to be able to pay for all this food we've had wonderful sponsors assist us with food. Everything goes to running the camp," Onion said. Volunteer coach Owen Watson, who's been coaching for two years, said his favourite thing about the camp is watching the camp grow. "It's grown so much," Watson said. "It's just nice to see the kids having fun doing something instead of just playing basketball."

MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT IN SMITHS FALLS TO HELP PTSD SOLDIERS HONOURING VET JIM KENNEDY MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com A memorial golf tournament will be held at Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club Aug. 24 in memory of veteran Jim Kennedy, who tragically died June 20, 2018 in a motorcycle accident. Widow Kim Kennedy, said Jim was a longtime member of the Canadian Armed Forces who served overseas on countless missions before his retirement four years ago. “He did eight tours,” Kennedy said. “When he went to Afghanistan, he was the person who had the most overseas tours that was still enlisted.” Kennedy said after her husband came back from Afghanistan he was diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “At first I waited for him to get back to himself. As time passed it became the new normal,” she said. “Everyone made excuses for him; his angry outbursts for no reason were just Jim. I

would have changed the hell my children and I lived through.” She said Jim strongly believed in the power of sport and how it could bring people together and help people with both physical and mental illnesses. He believed in a charity called Soldier On and all proceeds made during this golf tournament will go directly to the charity. “It’s all being put toward equipment purchase for specialized equipment for wounded veterans to help them get back into sport,” she said. Kennedy said the idea of the tournament came from Josh Bowes, a family friend who was close to Jim. “After he died Josh said he wanted to do a tournament in Jim’s memory and then I ran with it,” said Kennedy. “My husband was very involved at the golf club. His retirement plan was to become the new greens keeper. He was a member there.” The cost to play in the tournament is $120 per person or $35 for dinner. There will also be a guest speaker “We’re getting a wounded veteran with PTSD to come and talk to us and one of the guys from Dwyer Hill that used to know Jim has asked if he can get up and say a few words,” said Kennedy. “I want people to learn about PTSD.” She added that a few people who served with her late husband have also signed up to play in the tournament. The choice to fly, wear, or otherwise associate oneself with a flag is, inherently, a bold statement. If you fly a Canadian flag on your front porch, for example, you are telling the world that you are Canadian and proud of it. In recent years, a number of municipalities in the Ottawa Valley area have chosen to raise the Pride flag as part of their local Pride parades and festivals. This, too, is a clear statement, proclaiming that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identification, is welcome in these communities. Flags, and people's reactions to them, can indeed reveal much about someone's character. Recently, North Grenville council heard a delegation from a citizen who put forth the curious opinion that the Pride flag is itself discriminatory. Harman Boersma argued that the municipal flag policy states that "at no time will any flag be flown that's inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, prejudice, political, or religious ... and I've argued in my articles that the rainbow flag is all of those." Members of council explained to Boersma that, in their opinion, the Pride flag is none of these things - and in this case, it's council's opinion that counts. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those in this area who choose to fly the Confederate flag. Earlier this month, one appeared at a car show in Smiths Falls. Whether those who choose to use this flag as decoration want to admit it or not, people who associate themselves with it are aligning themselves with the Confederate States of America, which went to war against the U.S. in the 1860s to resist abolition and maintain their Black slaves. As such, the Confederate flag continues to be viewed by most people as a subtle (or not-so-subtle) endorsement of white supremacy. In Canada, people have the ability to fly whatever flag they want - this is freedom of speech; but freedom of speech also means that you recognize that in flying any given flag, people are going to judge you for it in one way or another, whether they judge you as a proud Canadian, a person who embraces inclusivity, or a bigot. The progression of society is a constant battle of pushand-pull. Flags, people's reactions to them, and indeed the reactions to the reactions, are often good ways of telling which side of history a person is on.

NO FEE INCREASE THIS SEASON AT SMITHS FALLS ARENAS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The cost of renting ice at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre will not increase for the upcoming season, but it seems to have caused some confusion for Smiths Falls Minor Hockey Association (SFMHA). Mat Krotki, president of SFMHA, spoke at a special committee of the whole on Monday, July 15, where he said he had received several emails "from the office at the rink" telling him about proposed increases. Krotki said the association had a meeting on March 14 and were told there would be a maximum five per cent increase for ice rentals for the 2019/2020 season. The minor hockey association's budget was made and registration prices set,

as they juggled the use of ice for home games and practices, and potential playoffs. "On June 4 at 2 p.m. we received an email from the office at the rink stating there would be a 50 per cent increase for prime-time or prime time ice and a 12 per cent increase on weekend rates," Krotki told council, as he was looking for clarification. "After we already had some 141 of our families already signed up and put their money on the table." SFMHA has on average, 275 children registered to play hockey. Ice convener, Barb Maitland, said she reached out to the administrator at the arena and since then the association had received different price structures. Krotki said they received an offer to keep last year's rates if they pay 100 per cent of their ice rentals

Krotki said he is hopeful they can solve the issue and come to a "reasonable conclusion where families can happily play hockey in Smiths Falls, and if they need to be faced with a large price increase then it's given to us at a time when we can set that forth properly to our membership." Art Manhire, the town's director of community services, confirmed in a Wednesday July 17 phone interview that the price of ice at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre or Youth Arena would not increase this season. " (SFMHA) will pay the same as they did last year," Manhire said, as will all other users. The association uses large chunks of ice time, "and if they can't use what they pay for they will have the opportunity to sell it.
We will help them if we can. We don't want to lose out on that revenue." Manhire said the trend in decreased ice rental is disturbing, with only 39 per cent of available ice time booked last season. From minor hockey alone, the revenue dropped from $138,000 in 2014/15 to $85,000. "That's a significant drop in revenues," Manhire said, who added they want the arena to be a viable facility for the town and they are looking at ways to help make that happen. Town staff is not looking to change the rates for the surrounding municipalities as they have user agreement in place. The town provides discounted rates to children and youth in sports. That equates to a discount of $50 per hour. "We're trying to get more users and commitment
from them to use the facility," Manhire said. "We're trying to be the most cost effective we can be. Comparatively, what we have discovered so far is that our rates are the lowest." Adult rental fees are $171/hour, while for youth, the cost is $121/hour. Manhire said no increases will be set this year as it's too late in the season, but next month, he will bring a report to council to open discussion on how best to utilize ice times, and that will include information on what other arenas are doing in eastern Ontario. "We can't increase user fees without it first being brought to council for discussion and direction," Manhire said. "We'll open that discussion for the 2020/21 season with the town, during council on Aug. 12."

REAL OF SMITHS FALLS RECOGNIZED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL WORK BY GREEN COMMUNITIES CANADA The 2019 GC Awards were announced at Green Communities Canada's annual general meeting, June 24. The awards recognize the many champions who work and volunteer with GCC and its member organizations. Among the winners was the Rideau Environmental Action Environment League (REAL) of Smiths Falls for 30 years of service. GCC also recognized staff and board members with 10 or more years of service including Barb Hicks and Peter Au, both with 30 years of service. Resilience Awards are given to GC member organizations that have continued to succeed despite challenges, thanks to a host of qualities including flexibility and adaptation, and have reached a milestone in longevity.

donors on Wednesday, July 3 at Canadian Tire in town. Peter Au, president of Rideau Roundtable, the organization to host Paddlefest every year, said the first three donors were Andress' Your Independent Grocer, Campbell's Trucking and Wills Transfer. "They responded in our
first appeal for this new idea," said Au. "I also approached Canadian Tire and then had a meeting with (owner) Craig Lattanville, and (he) said 'OK, now you have $1,500, I'll be the major sponsor,' and they sponsored the whole thing." Au said the idea for the trailer came from his last co-chair, Pat Gravaline.
"He actually used his own trailer to store stuff but then he had to move away so that is why we needed one," said Au. "Also looking into the future if you want to make things mobile, it would be good to have things all in one place." But the trailer isn't just going to be used for Paddlefest, Au said as Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program will able to use it as well. "It (Jumpstart) encourages kids to be active and so on and hope we get some more kids in the canoeing program from Jumpstart."

Beverley will be forever remembered by her loving children Debbie Cummings, Garth Hawkins, Penny Hawkins, stepchildren Judy (Stephen Spellman), Joyce Churchill, Jack (Doreen), Joe (Sandra), Lynn (Bill Crawford) and daughter Rosie. A loving grandmother to 17 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. Fondly remembered by her brothers Garth (Elaine), Edward (Karen), Donald (Janis), nieces, nephews, family and friends. Predeceased by her parents Bert and Barbara Garland. Her first husband Ray Hawkins; her second husband Jack Churchill and her stepsons Raymond Hawkins Jr. and Ronnie Churchill. Beverley was a proud and active member of the Perth Legion, the Perth Curling Club and an avid golfer, euchre and cribbage player. She enjoyed a full and active life. Friends may call at Blair & Son, 15 Gore St W, Perth on Friday, July 26, 2019 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Bev’s funeral services will be held in the chapel on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Munster Union Cemetery. In remembrance of Beverley contributions to the Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
SADLER, Lawrence Earl (Co-Founder and Life member of the Madawaska Pleasure Riders) Earl passed away, peacefull,y in the early hours of July 20, 2019, with his loving wife Patricia (Burns) by his side. He leaves to mourn his most loved and respected sister-in-law Susan (Mervin) McIntyre, sister Muriel (late George) Currie, brothers Arthur (Phyllis), and Stuart (MaryAnne). Father of Judith (Dick) Howey, Shelley, Phillip, and John Sadler. Much loved grandfather to Karen (Andrew) Valley, Ron (Anna) Ingram, Ryan (Haidyn) Smith, Lindsy (Justin) Smith, Travis and Zac Sadler, and great-granddaughter Ashley Ingram. Earl will be missed by his many friends and will live on in the memories shared. He will always be remembered for his love of life and the many jokes he played on unsuspecting friends and family. Known to many as simply the Mule Man. Earl often remarked he had the best life, retiring early and able to do what he loved playing with horses and mules, spending time with friends, camping, riding and driving. He had two things on his bucket list attending Bishop Mule Days in California, and riding a mule in the Grand Canyon, both of which he accomplished. He also leaves behind his much loved and talked about dog Skipper2. Some words that have been used to describe Earl are as follow: deliberate or stubborn, teacher, smartass, horseman, friend, mentor, passionate, wry sense of humor, storyteller, authentic, and memorable. A very huge thank you goes out to all who cared for Earl at the Bonnechere Manor, Dr. Andrea Dipaolo and the wonderful drivers of the Sunshine Coach. Donations to the Bonnechere Manor Renfrew or Sunshine Coach Renfrew would by appreciated. LOCKETT, April Amy Lynn April came to us after a long and bumpy road, and regretfully left us in the same. In the two years April was with us, she showed more resiliency, compassion, and unconditional love than most people can fathom in their entire lives. She was deeply treasured by her Mommy Kaitlyn and devoted to her brother Karter. She was Grandma Tammy and Grandpa Kevin’s little angel and bright ray of sunshine, wherever she went, she would light up the room, and the purest of souls would shine through her. Whenever her aunts; Samantha and Breanna (Dylan) or cousins; Brayden and Devon would come over, she would flash her giant, full tooth smile, and the day’s worries would be wiped away. A super tight hug from April could change your entire mood. Her great-grandparents Jack and Doreen Churchill and Virginia (late William) Lockett loved the way she laughed, her devious little laugh, accompanied by her sassy, no holds bar attitude. April was a curious, inquisitive little angel who loved playing at the park, on the swings, at the splash pad, and swimming in her pool. She loved to have her picture taken, loved to sing and dance and loved caring for her family. For everyone who knew her, there will be a place inside our hearts that will forever ache for April, including all her extended family, neighbours, family friends, and those who just saw her out and about in the community. CUNNINGHAM, James (1954-2019) It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of James on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the age of 64, with family by his side. He leaves to mourn, his loving wife and soulmate Joanne (nee Gagyi). Predeceased by his parents John Cunningham and Annie Devlin, and father-in-law Michael Gagyi. He is survived by his mother-inlaw Denyse Gagyi, his step daughter Katrina (Scott Andrews), brother Brian, sisters Ann (Claude Meunier), Karen (Brian McCarthy) and sister-in-law Linda Gagyi. Devoted grandpa to Michael and Christopher. Cherished uncle of Christy (Troy Mortimer) and Michael (Meagan Nice), Sean, Devon and Amanda (McCarthy). His best friend John Cuthbertson, as well as, extended family and many more wonderful friends. James had a life-long career working with Canadian Pacific Railway, working his way up through the ranks, retiring in 2012 as the VP of Mechanical Services after 38 years. He thoroughly enjoyed travelling. His aspiration was to reach 70 countries by the time he was 70. He did accomplish 68. He loved spending time at the Lake House, and winters down south. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the kindness and care that was given by the staff at the Kingston General Hospital Neurological and ICU departments. James will be greatly missed by his grieving family, but he will live on in their hearts and memories. Each of his so many connections will feel his absence. He was well loved and will always be lovingly remembered as a gentleman. At James request, the services are private for the immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Dr. Thomas W. Stewart in 2006.
