CAMP IS MORE THAN BASKETBALL MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com For over a decade, a basketball camp has been held at the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute to help families who can't afford to send their children to camp. Former camper and now di-
rector of the camp, Turner Onion, said he's been a part of the camp for a decade. He's been coming to the camp since he was in Grade 3, then became a volunteer and guest coach. Now he's been running the camp for the last three years. "I've grown up with this camp
and I've followed it," said Onion. "At the end of the day I see every kid go home tired, well fed and with smiles on their faces." Onion enjoys seeing happiness and a sense of accomplishment by the kids at the end of each day. During the camp participants
are split into six groups to learn drills and fun games with their volunteer coaches. Onion said since he's been running the camp, he's had campers who have never played basketball before go on to play on their school teams and teams in the community. "The campers will get involved in basketball teams throughout the year," said Onion. "Some go to See ENJOYING, page 4
