4 DEGREES BREWING COMPANY'S NEWEST BREW GOES BEYOND BEER HILL 70 WAS CREATED BY THE SMITHS FALLS BREWERY TO HONOUR THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE LARGELY FORGOTTEN FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Meet Hill 70. It's the newest brew that's been added to the lineup of beer offered by Smiths Falls brewery, 4 Degrees Brewing Company. Hill 70 is a Belgian Blonde. It's a dry beer, crisp with notes of apple, pears, banana, clove and spice. The complexity of the fermentation process, and the hops and esters from the yeast, give it a delightful, fruity background - leading up to a very clean finish, with little after taste. But Hill 70 isn't just a beer. It's a beer that both brings awareness to and honours those who fought in the Battle of Hill 70, the largely ignored and forgot-
ten battle of the First World War. Inspiration for the beer was drawn from the region in which the Battle of Hill 70 was fought. Originally, the brewery was looking at doing a French farmhouse ale but eventually ended up settling on a Belgian Blonde. "The problem with the French farmhouse ale was that it was going to be too cumbersome to produce because you'd have to produce it in such small batches," said Nick Ritchie, one of the brewery's owners. Jeff Murphy, the brewery's operations manager, explained that there's a technique of throwing rock candy into the brew to get the alcohol content up. "That's something farm-
ers would do when they brewed their own beers," he said. "Those early farmhouse styles, they brewed them with high alcohol content and water them down to serve them." When brewed, these beers could be around the 12 per cent mark, watered down hovering around 6 or 7 per cent. "This beer does actually share quite a bit with those traditional styles," he said. Hill 70 falls on the craftier side and marries well with the others the brewery has on tap. "It's another unique one for our line up," said Murphy. "Frost has always been our unique style, this one is kind of a different animal." Hill 70 is considered a gateway beer to help those who prefer a more basic beer, like North of 7, jump into a beer with a more complex, unique flavour profile. But, it's not just a gateway to expanding your beer drinking repertoire,

SFDCI students have been working to research Hill 70 soldiers from the largely forgotten battle. On Aug. 15, 1917, the Canadian attack to capture Hill 70, as a strategic diversion from Passchendaele, opened with a massive artillery barrage. Sir Arthur Currie, who had been placed in command of the Canadian Corps, was ordered to launch a frontal assault on the city of Lens. It was the first major battle with Canadian troops led by a Canadian commander. Instead of attacking the heavily fortified city directly, Currie, after studying the ground, convinced his British superiors that a better plan would be to capSee NEW, page 5

The annual award is given in honour of the late Joyce Brennan, a founding member of the Rideau Canal Museum Board and the Heritage House Museum, a town councillor, as well as a founding member of the SFDACC board. She was the mother to current town councillor Jay Brennan. Brennan couldn't be there for the award presentation. Instead, he wrote a letter that was read aloud at the award dinner. "I am certain my mom is smiling down on you tonight," wrote Brennan in his message to the winner. Au was among two nominees for the award this year. Debra Kuehl, the children's librarian at the Smiths Falls Public Library, was also nominated for her many contributions to the community, including her commitment to children's literature.

Longtime, dedicated Smiths Falls volunteer, Peter Au, was presented with this year's Joyce Brennan Award. "It really is nice to be able to be a part of the team that has contributed so much to the arts and culture in Smiths Falls," he said. The Joyce Brennan Award is given to a member of the community who has contributed significantly to arts and culture in the area. Au is one of those people. "If you don't already recognize the name Peter Au, you must be pretty new to the area," said Lynda Daniluk, vice-president of the Smiths Falls & Dis-
trict Arts & Culture Council (SFDACC). "For Peter is a real force in this town both from the supporting of arts in multiple forms, but also for showcasing many of the town's cultural aspects." Au was instrumental in the formation of the Rideau Environment Action League in 1989, and he was also responsible for maintaining the presence of the Evergreen Avenue, which honours residents who have made substantial community contributions. Au also volunteers in his role as chair of the Rideau Roundtable and as a member of the choir at Trinity United Church, as well as other groups within the church's structure. Au is also a member of the Chinese Community Association and the Local Immigration Partnership. He is also co-chair of Paddlefest, an annual cultural event that celebrates the Rideau. Au was presented with the award at a dinner put on by the SFDACC on Saturday, Nov. 3, where he was surrounded by members of the council and those with passion for lo-

ture Hill 70. There is a slight ridge in northern France where 100,000 Canadian readied themselves for the battle. If this dominating hill could be taken, the Germans would have no choice but to counterattack. Currie planned for artillery and machine-guns to smash these German concentrations, which would weaken their hold on the entire sector. German troops counterattacked no less than 21 times over 10 days. Each time they met a wall of Canadian bullets and shells. The Germans did not abandon the ruins of Lens. Canadian efforts kept large German forces pinned down in defence of Lens. The fighting lasted from between Aug. 15 and 25, 1917. When the major fighting came to an end, the Canadians lost more than
9,000 soldiers at Hill 70 but killed or wounded an estimated 25,000 Germans, according to the Canadian War Museum. This battle largely remains forgotten in history. That's despite the fact that Hill 70 produced six Victoria Cross recipients - more than any other Canadian Battle. Yet, there was no monument to the site in France - something Currie had advocated for and his choice over Vimy Ridge, which had a better vista. "Hill 70 was his choice," said Ritchie, and why the beer's can features the words: "Sir Arthur Currie's Choice. In 2017, a memorial was finally opened about 15 kilometres from the Vimy Ridge memorial in France. "The cool thing about beer is it fosters camaraderie, it fosters people to come together and have a chat about something," said Ritchie. "Hopefully, with this, they can contin-

"I think, at least for myself, I picture you sitting enjoying a beer and bringing up this history and going through it and hopefully, it sparks greater interest and you seek out more info." The beer has even been picked up by a couple military mess halls, something Ritchie said, is really inspiring. "I've talked to veterans, young guys who are currently in the military to people who are already retired out, to folks I've met three of four different guys who lost family members in Hill 70 and been able to chat with them and the response is phenomenal sharing stories, telling me about their grandparents," said Murphy. And it doesn't just stop with education, 25 cents of every beer sold goes straight to the Hill 70 Foundation, which has been instrumental improving the awareness of and increasing education surrounding the long-forgotten battle.

"For years now all biographies go onto the Lest We Forget database and these biographies are used for a wide variety of purposes," he said. "In this case, the biographies are used to shine some light and time on a battle, and the soldiers that fought in it, that have been long ignored in history." This portal into history will help bring attention to a battle. "We wanted you to be able to be enjoying the beer and be able to bring up these bios and actually read about local guys," said Murphy. It will provide a beer drinker, much like when people come in from out of town who love the brewery's beer Frost & Wood '55, with an opportunity to explore history that they might not know about. Murphy said when they come into the tasting bar it often leads to a conversation about Frost - who he

Canada Post employees in Smiths Falls hit the picket line Tuesday as part of the rotating strikes taking place across the country. About 35 employees in the local area took part. Local members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) walked off the job in Smiths Falls on Oct. 30 at 7 a.m., and are expected to remain in a strike position until 7 p.m. "We have no viable offer," said Rhonda Brooks, vice president of the TriTown local 627 in Smiths Falls. "We want health and safety to be addressed and we want a fair contract." Brooks said that their main concerns surround the heavy burden of overtime hours. "The strike is not to inconvenience the public," said Laurie Toms, shop steward of Tri-Town 627 in Smiths Falls. Rather, she said, it's to get Canada Post
to negotiate a fair contract. Toms said issues with pay equity need to be addressed. The workers have been without a contract since January 2018. "We remain committed to arriving at a negotiated settlement with CUPW, while making every effort to minimize the impact of any disruption on the customers we serve," said Canada Post in a statement released on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Canada Post said negotiations continue with the help of a special mediator. On Oct. 30, strike actions began at 8 a.m. local time in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon, Sask., and earlier in the day in Cobourg, Petawawa/Deep River, Fort Frances, Kapuskasing, Kenora and Smiths Falls (Tri-Town), Ont. and Weyburn, Sask. Strike activity continues in the Greater Montreal Area, where it started at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29. Employees in Prince George, B.C., and in Peterborough, Ont., also remain on strike. Employees in the Lower Mainland of B.C., Lloydminster, Sask., Winnipeg
and Brandon, Man., Thunder Bay, Oshawa and Pickering, Ont., and ÎIes-de-laMadeleine, Que., returned to work following CUPW's strike activity in those locations. Canada Post says Montreal is an important processing hub, so the union's rotating strike there will have a significant impact on operations. Canada Post says it will make every effort to minimize the impact, but customers well beyond Montreal may see delays for parcel and mail delivery. Canada Post reports that as employees return to work in areas impacted by strikes, it will continue to work to restore service and address any mail and parcel backlogs. Canada Post continues to operate across the rest of Canada and is accepting and delivering mail and parcels in all other locations.

LEST WE FORGET WHAT THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR OUR FREEDOM WERE FIGHTING FOR Nov. 11, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, or what contemporaries optimistically referred to as "la der des ders," meaning the last of last. So horrific were the gas bomb atrocities and trench warfare casualty lists, that the people who lived through it could scarcely imagine that two decades later their sons and daughters would see an even more destructive and painful war waged across virtually every continent.Critical civil and democratic rights were gained in Canada during the period between these wars. In 1918, women became eligible to vote in most provinces. The general strikes of 1919, borne out of the frustrations of rising inequality, resulted in increased union participation rates across the country, lifting wages and culminating in many of the benefits we now enjoy, such as employment insurance (1940). Many attribute these gains to the fact that the people who had lived through the hell of war wanted their sacrifices to mean something. So when despots rose in the 1930s, threatening world peace, they knew what they were fighting for, and they did what was necessary to preserve our freedom. Yet in 2018, many voters worldwide have chosen a different path. For a variety of reasons, voters in the U.S., Brazil and other western nations are choosing an eerily familiar path that resembles the sort of fascism that rose in the mid-20th century. As a result, the rights of groups such as people of colour and immigrants are at risk. We need look no further than the neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville in the summer of 2017, and the American president who defended them for a very literal example of how hate and intolerance are being condoned by leadership. It's not hard to the link this climate to terrorist violence, such as the recent Pittsburg synagogue shooting. We urge readers to consider what the heroes we remember on Remembrance Day were fighting for. Regardless of one's political beliefs, hopefully we can all agree that all people, regardless of gender, religion, ethnic background or sexual orientation, deserve to be treated equally and with respect. Our ancestors who served in wars aimed at preserving freedom would certainly want Canadians to be vigilant, and make sure what we are seeing in the U.S. never comes to our country. Lest we forget those who died for our rights and freedom. Lest we forget what they were fighting for.

In the centre of this bright and lovely facility, a skylighted atrium was created as a square, with a walkway and comfortable seating. The centre was filled with an amazing array of green plants and trees. It was thought that this would be an ideal space for seniors to spend some time as they might wish. Each time we visited, the space remained void of anyone at all. Being a gardener and with the indoor/outdoor style of the space, I had to ask staff why. I was told that the area was air-conditioned and the residents did not return after their initial visit, because it was just too cold. Dealing with my own elderly parents re-enforced that they were un-
able to spend any great length of time in areas that were air-conditioned in their facility, and they often requested extra blankets at night even though their room had no air-conditioning. It seems that older people can really feel the cool/ cold and therefore not all of them would benefit from a "blanket" rule of air-conditioning throughout their building. Oh, and eventually, the central atrium in Winnipeg was renovated; plants, walkway and benches removed, and it became office space for administrative staff.
LYNDA P. HADDON, BARRIE'S SIDE ROAD PERTH
GROUP SEEKING CLIMATE ACTION WITH UPDATE ON POLICIES DEAR EDITOR,
We delivered to MP Scott Reid a summary of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. The report's message is that the door is closing on our chances for a healthy fu-
ture. We have to cut our greenhouse gas emissions in half in 12 years. This message is effectively science's message, the same science that guides planes down to safe landings and makes your cellphone work to access the world. The message is that we're in a perilous situation with respect to planetary warming. We asked Mr. Reid to pledge that, before the next election, he will propose, champion and support legislation to update Canada's climate policies and bring them in line with the urgency called for in the IPCC report. The summary is available at http://report.ipcc.ch/sr15/pdf/ sr15_spm_final.pdf We ask that Mr. Reid be another voice within the Conservative caucus for climate action. The precautionary principle means we must take action to ensure our best chances for a safe future. Respectfully,

If you've been wondering what's happening at Old Slys Locks, we've got answers. During the week of Oct. 29, Parks Canada, in efforts to make repairs to Old Slys Locks, began with the installation of the cofferdam - a temporary dam used to create a dry in-water work space. To facilitate this work, Parks Canada reports that Old Slys Road will be reduced to one lane intermittently. Flag staff will be on-site to control traffic during this time. During the week of Oct. 15, the contractor began to mobilize the site in order to rehabilitate Old Slys Locks 26 and 27 on the Rideau Canal National Historic Site. This site's namesake is William Sly, a settler who began developing the area in the early 1800s. In the late 1820s, construction of the locks began. Plans were later modified to increase the size of the lock to accommodate large steamboats in the early 1830s. At this time, the dam was also raised by three feet and a waste weir was included in the plans to improve water management at the site. Parks Canada says this project will be completed in two phases during the nonnavigation season and is expected to finish in spring 2020. During the first phase, repairs will be undertaken on the masonry outside of the chamber of both Lock 26 and 27. Repairs will include stone replacement, repointing and grouting. Work will also be completed on the stop log gains, and the west wall excavation. The second phase, scheduled to begin in fall 2019, will focus on repairs to
heritage stone masonry within both locks and the sluice tunnels. This project is part of Parks Canada's $3-billion investment over five years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These historic investments will mitigate health and safety risks, halt the loss of nationally significant built heritage and stimulate the economy in communities across the country.

Funding more staff for the Lanark Lodge long-term care facility in Perth is on the agenda for Lanark County council's consideration, but so is cutting back on some of the programs that are offered. Jeannie Bingley, the interim care director at the lodge, presented her report to county council on Oct. 10 where she outlined the current situation at the lodge - 163-bed facility with 127 people currently on the waiting list Bingley indicated the budget may include a substantial increase to the levy, and outlined issues the long-term care home is facing around insufficient direct care-to-resident staffing ratios, insufficient provincial funding and ongoing staffing shortages. "Management is not seeking a commitment from council at this time," she said. "Rather, this is an opportunity to provide continued awareness of the state of longterm care in Ontario and receive feedback prior to finalizing the budget to be presented to the new council." Bingley noted that management is undertaking a detailed review of capital needs and is also recommending an increase in direct care staffing of personal support workers (PSW). "Ontario seniors are entering long-term care homes when they are older, frailer and in need of more medical and personal care than ever before," Bingley said.
"This measurement is defined as resident acuity, which is continually rising without corresponding funding and staffing increases." An increase in PSW hours would increase the amount of personal care received by residents. Lanark County warden John Fenik (Perth mayor) spoke to the issue on Monday, Nov. 5 in a phone interview with the Perth Courier. "Lanark Lodge is a place of excellence," he said. "It's funded directly by county council. This year we budgeted a little over $13 million for operating costs. The building is fairly old so this year we budgeted $716,000 for capital costs." What has changed in longterm care, and it's not specific to Lanark Lodge, it is increasingly difficult to get front line staff care, he said. "Every facility is looking for personal support workers. There are not enough to go around, and nursing staff," Fenik said. "Without those two critical components for front-line care, things are very difficult. So we're shifting our focus on funding additional nursing positions and PSW positions, because quite frankly, it is reaching a crisis for front line staff." Fenik said working with the aging population is a difficult job. "Elder care is not that easy as seniors are living longer and there is a whole wrath of issues to deal with - levels of dementia are up, levels of Alzheimer's are up.
Financial Problems? To discuss your options
Call Brian Raby, CPA, CA
Laurie Weir/Metroland The budget will be finalized for the Lanark Lodge long-term care facility by Lanark County council in the new year. People are living longer, but quality of life is not necessarily that great either. Being a nurse or a PSW in long-term care facilities are difficult and hard work. They are regularly subjected to verbal abuse, physical abuse and it's very difficult to hold onto staff." Fenik said that yes, they will probably be looking at a tax increase. "Provincially, long-term care dollars don't move that quickly. I think we need the province to step in here too, but we have to put money into making sure our elders are cared for and there is dignity in the final stages of life and that they're well looked after. That's going to take more money and it's going to take more staff."
So cutting things like spiritual care, Fenik apologized. "I'm sorry, but feeding, clothing, frontline care for our residents, that comes first. I think we are going to be spending more money looking after these folks, as we should. Our shift is going into more front-line care and more support in that area." Bingley said long-term care homes have high care needs. "The province should provide a sufficient and fixed level of funding per bed to all homes, which would help stabilize care for residents and reduce the current administrative burden to secure funding," she said. Lanark Lodge is undertaking efforts to make it attractive to
new employees and to improve retention. The report shows that management is looking at heating and cooling improvements to the D Wing, which they would fund through reserves if the budget is approved. The lodge's capital reserve budget sits at $2.37 million. Bingley also noted in an email to this newspaper, that pastoral care hours are being reduced in 2019. "The four hours per month in 2019 will be provided by contractual services," she wrote. "Music therapy is continuing but must be paid by residents/family (many already paid for their own). This is a contractual service and has never been an employee of the lodge. The lodge receives no funding for either of these services so all shortfalls have to be funded by taxpayer." The budget is expected to be finalized early in the new year.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY Lanark Lodge is facing program cuts to help offset cost of hiring more front-line workers.

AWARD MARKS 30 YEARS OF REMEMBERING MERRICKVILLE STUDENT ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Rita Smith remembers young Raymond Jacques Jr.'s daily visits to the Merrickville bakery she used to work at in the 1980s. "Every evening after school, he used to come into the bakery to get a cookie or something to go with his chocolate milk," she said. "When he came in, he'd have just his allowance and used to ask the price of everything on the shelf. He was a great kid." Smith was on hand, along with Raymond's father, Raymond Jacques Sr., to present the 30th annual Raymond Jacques Jr. memorial award at Merrickville Public School (MPS) Nov. 2. The award pays tribute to the late MPS student, who passed away Nov. 26, 1988 at age nine after falling through ice, and his love of cross-country running. Each year it is given to a student who demonstrates sportsmanship, dedication and excellence in the
sport. Traditionally one student receives the award, but from this year on, a male and female student will be given the honour. This year's recipients were grade 4 student Codah Turcotte and Finley Yeoumans, who is in grade 5. "When others do the minimum amount of laps in practice, these two do the maximum amount before the bell rings," explained teacher Matt Bennett, who serves as cross-country coach along with colleague, Colleen Perkins. "And at meets, they are at the line when they need to be and have nothing left in the tank at the finish line." Yeoumans and Turcotte both admitted it was "exciting" to earn the honour. They're in good company as well; Codah's brother Caden won the award in 2017, while Finley's brother Evan, was the 2014 recipient. "It makes me feel proud," Turcotte said. For 30 years, Jacques Sr.

LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Matthew Adams (or Matthew Runaway as he's known on stage) is proud of his small town roots, growing up in Fallbrook on the family farm. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School in Lanark, and then St. John Catholic High School in Perth. Adams has recently dropped his first solo country music video, "Small Town Pride," which reflects on his time in this area. It's got a great story, a Florida Georgia Line feel with a bit of a rock jam. All these influences have played a part in his life. "I'd really just like peo-
ple to get to know me! 'Small Town Pride' is a reflection of how I viewed growing up in Perth. I can't wait to release more music soon and show people who I am," he said in an email exchange with The Perth Courier from Nashville. Adams said he started listing to the great rock music of the '80s, thanks to his mother, Debbie Adams. " ... she had a good ear for music. Naturally that's what I wanted to start playing," he said. "As time went on my musical spectrum grew and I was listening to anything from hard rock to classic country." He said he chose the country route because it was something he felt he always wanted to do. "But all the opportuni-
ties I had forwarded to me were not (country). I experienced a bit of success playing lead guitar in my former band Aspire. We were lucky enough to tour North America with some pretty awesome bands and most importantly, made life friends and learned about the music industry," he said. Eventually, though Aspire split, and band members went their separate ways, Adams took it all in stride. He viewed it as an opportunity to pursue what he always wanted to do - write, perform and sing country music. "I was always pulled to country music because it's a genre of music that allows you to tell your story and be very personal with your

He's currently recording more music, but hopes to be touring - including back home. "Funny enough I've actually never got to play a show in Perth; I hope that changes soon." His musical influences
include Jake Owen, FGL, Chris Lane, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams and Brantley Gilbert. "Growing up I always looked up to my mother, my uncles Herb, Ray, Kenny, and Brett, and grandmother Phyllis Adams. They taught me about hard work on the family farm in Fallbrook."

SMALL TOWN PRIDE SPEAKS TO GROWING UP IN LANARK COUNTY FOR RUNAWAY MUSICIAN
He also credits two favourite teachers. "I've had many amazing teachers but the two who really formed me into the musician I am were Mike McPherson and Jim Ryan. I can't thank Mike enough for being more than just a guitar teacher! He has coached me though the music industry since day one and still is involved with decisions made to this day! Jim was my music teacher in high school and always gave me the tough love I needed. " Although music takes up most of his time, he does enjoy a Blue Jays game, and working on cars. He gets much enjoyment from his red SS Camaro. Adams appreciates the hometown support, love and encouragement. "It's been such an amazing journey and if y'all see me around town don't hesitate to stop me and say hi." He has a big social media presence on Instagram and Twitter. He also has a Facebook page. OPINION
MY LIFE AS A WAYFARING TROUBADOUR IN CONCERT NOV. 24 IT HASN'T ALL BEEN PLEASANT, BUT IT'S NEVER BORING, WRITES LYLE DILLABOUGH LYLE DILLABOUGH Column
Being in a position now to look back over the years, certain patterns emerge and perhaps even too, some understanding. I guess it's just a part of getting older or perhaps it's a blessing should one choose to see it that way. For we all travel our own roads and if we are wise we will seek some understanding of it all along the way and if we are brave we may even seek the truth. My life has been lived out in the open when one is a public figure. Funny it is,
too, because I'm such an introverted person deep down and spend much time alone. In 2001, former Ottawa Sun writer, Tom VanDusen, labelled me the Ottawa Valley troubadour in a feature article entitled, "Singer Beats His Demons" and the handle has stuck ever since. Not that I've beat all my demons, but the fight was truly on at that time and continues to this day. So, I asked myself, "what is a troubadour?" A travelling mistral, news bringer, storyteller, etc. In the days of the Crusades (during the 1500s and at other times) the troubadours went from place to place singing songs and bringing "the news" that usually went against the "official line" being presented by the church and overlord kings at the time. In my career as a musician, writer and broadcaster, I'm well acquainted with the term, "shoot the messenger," as I've been blamed for just about ev-
erything at one time or another. Usually from some politician who didn't like the truth being revealed and who was, in the end, just a victim of his/her own desires. In 2003, I moved to Pembroke where I joined that community's palliative care team and a whole new world of experience was opened up to me. Also, much personal growth and, dare I say, healing. Then, the opportunity to perform again, write articles and do radio work returned to me. From then until health issues sidelined me for a few years back, I was fortunate to travel most of the country meeting people and experiencing Canada. From the famous to the outrageous to the common everyday folks who make it all happen, they were all there along the way. It is these (the common folks) that I admire and respect the most. Which brings us to the
term, "wayfaring." It basically means, "doomed to roam." Yep, and that about says it all concerning me. Recently, I have begun writing songs again, recording and making personal appearances. Carleton Place singer-songwriter, Pat Willbond and I performed on CHIP-FM (Fort Coulonge, Que.) a while ago and introduced some of those new songs. We hope to travel the valley this fall and winter making intimate performances where we can mingle with people and perhaps raise much needed funds for local charities, etc. Every little bit helps and creates momentum. On Saturday, Nov. 24, a
Thanks to great co-operation, on behalf of the legion, we will are able to offer tickets to this show at a very reasonable cost of $15 each. It's an intimate setting, so there is limited seating. Tickets are available now at Temptations Variety (117 Bridge St.), SRC Music (124 Moore St.) and at the legion (177 George St.) In closing, all I can say is, it's been quite the journey so far and the road continues. And if it hasn't always been pleasant it has never been boring. I live to see what will happen next. Lyle Dillabough is a local musician who writes for the Ottawa Valley newspapers.

special tribute concert will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192 in Carleton Place, which will feature myself and a group of musicians that we call The Wayfaring Troubadours. In celebration of the eve of the Town of Carleton Place's 200th anniversary (1819-2019) this group of veteran, area-based, performers will play the "tunes of our times." ('60s, '70s, '80s, etc.) It's incredible when one considers just how many world-class musicians make this area home. Willbond, Mike Lush, Rick Picard, Gary O'Meara and Willy Barnes will grace the stage that night.

BEAUTIFUL FULL FIGURE BOUTIQUE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR IN BUSINESS Stephanie.Mols@century21.ca
LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Sherrie Axford knows what she likes, and she loves to shop trouble is, there was no place for her to shop in Smiths Falls. So she opened a boutique for full figure fashion, and a year later, she's celebrating her first anniversary. Beautiful Full Figure Boutique, located at 7 Russell St. E., caters to the curvaceous plussized figure, and she has clothing from size 14 to 6x. "I love shopping," she said on Friday, Nov. 2 as she celebrated her first year in business. "But there was no place to find plus-sized clothing in town. This is an untapped market, and so far, it's been an overwhelming success." She said she had no idea when she opened her pop-up shop a year ago that it would be so successful. "I was just trying it out to see how it would go," she said of the pop-up. "And here we are a year later. It's been great. It has exceeded all expectations."

Laurie Weir/Metroland Sherrie Axford, (right) celebrates her first year in business at the Beautiful Full Figure Boutique in Smiths Falls on Nov. 2. Staff member, Katrina Ryder and Axford arrange some of the plus-sized clothing on a rack. Customers are coming from as far away as Kingston and Brockville, as well as many locals. "I carry brand names and all the clothing is slightly used, but some still have their tags." The boutique is not a consignment shop. You will find brands from Penningtons, Lane Bryant, Jones New York and Addition Elle. There is also a new line of leggings. "We offer stylish, quality brand names, and designer labels," Axford said. "We also carry shoes, purses, jewelry, essential
oils, and gift ideas, to fit every body and budget." From jeans, to sweaters, blouses and holiday wear, the clothing is reasonably priced for all shoppers. Axford is also able to employ

Evelyn Harford/Metroland Wills Transfer Limited was awarded the Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce's President's Award at the chamber's annual gala hosted at Hanley Hall on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. Pictured here from left to right, Jordi Wills, Wills' general manager, Heather Wills, the company's vice president, Terry Wills, the company's president, and Sean Lawrence, the chamber's vice president.
WILLS TRANSFER LIMITED WINS CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT'S AWARD EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Third-generation familyowned business Wills Transfer Limited was awarded the Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce's President's Award. Wills Transfer was presented with accolade, meant to honour a company that has been both deeply involved in business and philanthropy in the community, at the chamber's gala on Friday, Oct. 26. Wills Transfer began operation in Smiths Falls in 1945 with two small stake trucks, providing local moving and cartage services in town. Now, over 70 years later, the company is still familyowned. Today the company has 185 employees and 600,000 square feet of commercial warehouses throughout eastern Ontario. "My dad, who has passed away, and my mom were mentors to me in many areas of my life including faith, family and business and I have been blessed growing up in their family and in their business," said Terry Wills, Wills Transfer's president. Wills gave a special thank you to his wife Heather Wills, vice-president of Wills Transfer, who has worked alongside her husband for the past 35 years.
"Our gifts are quite different, and Heather is good with detail and administration, and I am not. I enjoy the people part of the business and the trucks and warehouses. So, we have made a good team," he said. Terry also thanked daughter, Melanie, and his son, Jordi, for putting up with a dad who was very engaged in a family business. In fact, Terry's succession plan for the company, which includes Jordi, will make Wills Transfer a fourth-generation family-owned business. "This award is the result of a team effort," he said. "We are blessed with such an amazing group of people in our company. Without them Wills Transfer would not be here today." Throughout their many years in business, Terry said Wills Transfer has build a culture on their values of "people matter," "do the right thing," and "continued excellence." Terry thanked the chamber for their efforts throughout the year to bring value to the business community, to promote our town and stimulate interest in various community initiatives. "As we all know, there have been several years where the going was tough and there were not many
'good news' stories," he said. "But you persevered and what a joy to be here today, with all the positive news of Tweed, Le Boat, busy real estate market and optimism in the air," he said. Terry and his family have seen Smiths Falls go through various ups and downs. Except for a few years spent out of town going to school, Terry has been a "Smiths Falls-ite" for most of his life. His grandparents lived on Brockville Street, and his parents before him lived on Elm Street. Terry said his kids have chosen to live in town. "I am proud of our town. Our business has diversified to include facilities in other towns in eastern Ontario," he said. Despite the expansion, Wills Transfer has chosen to keep their head office in Smiths Falls. "It would take a lot to convince me to relocate," said Terry. Wills Transfer isn't just about business, they're about community. Wills Transfer is a regular contributor to many community initiatives including sports teams, hospitals and health care, food programs, as well as overseas programs to provide clean drinking water in some African communities.

LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It only took him threeplus decades, but Tim Norris turned his bullied childhood into a success story as he hit the podium in a bodybuilding championship over the weekend in Ottawa. On Saturday Nov. 3, the Smiths Falls bodybuilder competed and took first place in the Grand Masters division (ages 50+) at a regional event, Ottawa GNC/ AllMax Championships run by the Canadian Physique Alliance. "It was great," he said in a phone interview on Monday, Nov. 5 with the Record News. "It was a really, really good feeling. At 52, I didn't think I was going to even give it a shot. About five and a half weeks ago, a
friend convinced me to give it a shot. So I lost 28 pounds, and went in and ya, it was fantastic." Body building has been a work in progress for this local man, and it all started after being bullied at a young age. "I was constantly picked on as a kid," he confessed, and soon started weight lifting at age 16. That 110-pound York weight set from Canadian Tire was not just a phase. It was the best gift he had ever received from his parents and uncle, he said. Weight lifting became an outlet for him to deal with frustrations, but they also helped him celebrate on a good day. He built himself a makeshift bench - probably wasn't the safest thing to do but it was something he needed to get stronger, he
said. Bench press became one of his favourites. Originally he went into body building and nothing could top the feeling of reaching a new personal best, he said. He worked toward achieving goals and making them reality. As he got stronger, he entered power lifting competitions and bringing home wins. In 2016, at age 50, he decided to attempt to break a world record at the Healthy Living Festival in Smiths Falls. This was an unsanctioned event, but he did it with a lift of 355 pounds, breaking the record by 10 pounds. A year later at the same festival, he did it again with a lift of 365 pounds. "I bench-pressed twice my body weight," he said. "It was a lot of fun." And just this year, he
earned the Canadian log press championship for men over 50, which he won the past two summers. This is where he has had some injuries, including two ripped biceps, busted ribs and a concussion when he dropped a log on his head - not on purpose, he added with a laugh. Norris said his interests soon shifted toward strongman competitions. In his first competition, he placed third and knew that this was something that he wanted to take further. A year later, he started to place first. "As a weight lifter, I could pretty much eat what I wanted to," he said. "I'd weigh myself with a doughnut in my hand. It was OK because we pulled transports and flipped cars, and you want the body weight.

with sponsorship for this competition. Norris was also sponsored by Milano's of Smiths Falls. "My coach and some judges now want me to try the Toronto pro show in June next year, but that will depend on sponsorship - but that will be about a $2,000 weekend. If I could get any kind of sponsorship that would be fantastic." Norris has had a community outpouring of support during this process. He credits Gillian HartinDillabough for showing him posing routines and great advice; coach Paul Martin for his help along the way; and to training partner, Rob Patterson. "Mom has been my biggest supporter and inspiration," he said of Lindalee Norris. "I wouldn't be where I am without her; and to all the friends I have made along the way at the gym, thank you for your support."

TIM NORRIS IS CHAMPION MAN IN 50-PLUS DIVISION
But with this (body building competition), I went into this at 175 which was the lightest I've been since I was 21 years old. It's a total body strip - the work out and the diet, everything is so different." A different workout regime included six days a week for sculpting compared to three days a week for power lifting "because you want time to recover the muscle," he said. Norris is a supporter of local charities and has planned and executed events to raise money. He pulled an ambulance across a parking lot, and dead-lifted a car 16 times raising money for a variety of causes like SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), Big Brothers Big Sisters Lanark County, CHEO, autism and the breakfast program. He works out at Iron Body Fitness in Smiths Falls, whose owner Michael Gallagher helped

GIVING THE GIFT OF INDEPENDENCE of his life and not have to face the world again." That was not going to work for his parents, however. Both recently retired engineers, they were ready for a future of freedom. But, first, they needed to prepare their son to step forward independently. "That was our challenge," says Cille, "After consulting with numerous experts, he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD). That helped us find a solution that worked for him in the form of brainwave optimization at a retreat centre where he was treated for five weeks." Brainwave optimization is based on electroencephalography; the measurement of electrical activity in the brain. The treatment, which involves the conversion of the electrical activity into musical tones, has been described as a process that
IRIS WINSTON These days, Rob and Cille Harris are proud to speak about how well their son is doing. He has been fully employed for almost three years. He lives in his own apartment in another city, pays his bills on time and is positive about life. This is a far cry from the young man, who, four years ago, had such low esteem that he was not able to seek work and was almost reduced to living on the street. "He just wasn't finding his way," says Cille Harris, explaining that difficulty transitioning into adulthood is often described as "failure to launch." "We finally invited him to come home and agreed to try and figure out what was going on," she says. "We found that he just wanted to live with us for the rest

They also realized that their experience made it possible to help other parents who have to deal with parenting issues related to failure to launch. They are now in the process of updating their website, "Real Alternatives for Out Living the Dream (www.ra.ca)," to focus more clearly on helping others. Here, they share the knowledge they gained through their experience and connect parents with available resources. "We would love to have an online support group for parents in similar situations and bring in experts," says Cille. "It's a lonely world out there and we're willing to share and help." a tremendous difference to their son, say his parents. "He showed no more ADD symptoms and was generally functioning well enough to live independently. He was able to focus and I became confident that he was ready to move on," says Cille. "When he graduated from the retreat centre, we could confidently give him the gift of independence." They found a suitable rental space, paid his first two months' rent and gave him the key and enough money to buy food for two months. "From there, he was on his own. He had to find a job and was not welcome to live with us or his brothers," says Cille. "Hard as it was to let go, I was able to say I did everything I could and now I'm able to let him live his life. And that gave me the freedom to be independent myself." While recognizing that all four

SWERDFAGER, Sandra June
November 9, 1941October 28, 2018 Sandra passed away, unexpectedly, in her sleep, on Sunday. She was the beloved daughter of the late Ken and the late June Swerdfager, the treasured sister of John Swerdfager (the late Sandy) and Melinda Glew (Tom), and the dear aunt of Wendy Swerdfager (Lee Roy). Sandra was a truly unique, creative and funny woman. She loved to make everyone laugh and had a very kind heart. She taught us all a lot about life. She was so loved and will be greatly missed by all of us. She has a special place in our hearts. Sandra lived at Rideau Regional Centre for over 50 years. She was a friend to everyone. She enjoyed many activities and outings especially singing in the choir and going to church. She had wonderful care and was very happy there. When RRC closed Sandra was very fortunate to find a home at Lera with The Mills Community Support along with two of her very close friends. She was much loved by all the staff and residents there even when she was feisty. They were truly a family and she loved all of them. Last year she moved to Hwy. 43, also with The Mills, and found the same kind and compassionate care there. I want to thank Julie and all the other staff of angels at both Lera and Hwy. 43 for their dedication and kindness in taking such wonderful care of Sandra. She was so very lucky to have all of them and she loved them all. We love them too. Sandra will be laid to rest beside her parents in a private family ceremony. A celebration of her life will be held at her home in late November. For those wishing to, a donation to Mills Community Support would be greatly appreciated. FIELDING 2x44 In memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth who passed away “50” years ago, November 10, 1968. If I could visit heaven even for a day, Maybe for a moment the pain would go away. I’d put my arms around you and whisper words so true, That living life without you, is the hardest thing to do. No matter how I spend my days, No matter what I do, No mornings or evenings, When I don’t think of you. Fifty years have passed dear Gran, But my memories of you are always on my mind. Sitting in the rocker, sipping tea loaded with sugar, Threading needles with different colors of thread. Waking up to my glass of water in the morning, The boiled egg for breakfast, a piece of eggshell always in my bowl. So many loving moments, Gran. When I think of you often, my tears fall! I deeply loved you, and miss you so so much! Forever and ever your granddaughter, Karen P.S. Gran, I’m now a Grammie too! I have three beautiful grandbabies: “Allison, Dane and Frank”. You would have loved them so much Gran! “Sending hugs to heaven”
BRENDA FINNERTY O’NEIL In loving memory of a dear wife, mother and grandmother who passed away 20 years ago on November 10. We’re missing you a ittle more Each time we hear your name, We’ve cried so many tears, Yet our hearts are broken just the same. We miss our times together, Things in common we could share, But nothing fills the emptiness, Now that you’re no longer there. We’ve so many precious memories, To last our whole life through, Each one of them reminders, Of how much we’re missing you. Forever loved and missed Doug ~ Mom/Grandma What is home without a mother? All things this world may send, But when we lost our darling mother, We lost our dearest friend. But all we can do dear mother, Is go and tend your grave, And leave behind tokens of love, To the best mother God ever made. So you who have a mother, Cherish her with care, For you’ll never know the heartache, Till she is no longer there. Miss you and love you always Jason, Jeremy and Benji and families
FOSTER, Russell - In loving memory of a dear husband and friend, dad and poppa who left us November 4, 2017. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We try to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all. You did so much for all of us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. Those special years will not return, When we are all together, But with love in our hearts, You walk with us forever. Always remembered, sadly missed and loved by his wife Audrey, Tracey, Travis and Ellen and grandchildren Claire and Grace

His Masterpiece God took the fragrance of a flower The majesty of a tree, The gentleness of morning dew The calm of a quiet sea, The beauty of the twilight hour The soul of a starry night, The laughter of a rippling brook The grace of a bird in flight, The tender care of an angel The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of an eternity The depth of a family’s need Then God fashioned from these things A creation like no other, And when His masterpiece was through He called it simply....mother..

During National Senior Safety Week, which takes place annually from November 6 to 12, the Canada Safety Council (CSC) shines a light on issues affecting Canadian seniors’ health, independence and safety. The CSC’s awareness campaign this year focuses on digital security for seniors. Working alongside Telus Wise, the organization is striving to provide seniors with relevant educational resources and programs. INTERNET USE BY SENIORS IS ON THE RISE The percentage of internet-users older than 65 is on the rise. According to the 2016 General Social Survey conducted by Statistics Canada, from 2013 to 2016 the number of internet users rose from 65 to 81 per cent among Canadians aged 65 to 74 and from 35 to 50 per cent among Canadians aged 75 and over. TELUS WISE SENIORS Internet safety for seniors is an increasingly important issue. Therefore, the CSC and Telus are collaborating to offer seniors free, in-store workshops on digital security. Information can be found on the Telus Wise Seniors webpage (wise.telus.com/wiseseniors).
• Keep your personal financial information safe. Never provide your bank account or credit card numbers over the phone or Internet, or by email. Do not share your personal identification numbers (PINs) or online banking passwords with anyone – not even family members or close friends. • If you shop online, shop from reputable retailers and use one credit card to pay for your purchases. This will make it easier to track your transactions and spot suspicious activity. Change this credit card every year. • Review your credit card and debit statements regularly. If something doesn’t look right, contact your financial institution right away. • Donate only to reputable charities that you know and trust. Do not donate money to an unknown charity. If you want to donate to specific charities, directly contact them to safely make a donation.

Helping seniors stay safe on the internet
Prevention Tips
• If you think a deal sounds too good to be true, it is. Walk away. • Never rush into a purchase because a salesperson is pressuring you. Take some time to think about the purchase. Be especially wary of apparent doorto-door repair or salespeople, for example, who appear friendly but insist on entering your home or pressuring you to make a purchase. Tell them you need several days to think about it,or choose not to open your door. • When you are out running errands, leave your extra credit and debit cards in a safe place at home. This will help protect you in case you lose your purse or wallet. • If you lose or misplace your debit or credit cards, contact your financial institution as soon as possible. • Order your free credit report at least once a year
For those who prefer learning from home, the webpage provides a treasure trove of tips for using the internet and smartphones safely. Especially valuable is the Telus Wise Seniors Guide, which addresses such topics as creating secure internet passwords and shopping on reputable websites. This Sunday, Nov. 11, is Remembrance Day and as usual my wife and I will join the crowd at the cenotaph in our adopted hometown of Carleton Place to remember the dead from two world wars and the Korean conflict. It is also a good opportunity to remember and thank all Canada's military veterans. That includes everyone who has served our country during times of war or those who have served and those who have died in Canadian missions aimed at securing what is clearly a very elusive goal peace! This Nov. 11 is special because we will also be marking the centennial of the end of the First World War, on Nov. 11, 1918. More than 60,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders (Newfoundland didn't officially join Canada until 1949) perished in what, at the time, was called "the war to end all wars." Clearly things haven't quite worked out that way!
But on that Monday, 100 years ago this weekend, church bells rang out spontaneously across Canada as people celebrated the end of a bloody, four year conflict which claimed the lives of millions worldwide. The war also resulted in a further 172,000 Canadians being wounded. Countless others in our country suffered greatly as a result of the war, especially those whose loved ones were killed or injured during the fighting. This Sunday, through the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion, Canada's largest veterans' organization along with churches, community councils and groups from coast-to-coast, church bells will ring 100 times in villages, towns and cities nation-wide to help the nation remember. Appropriately the national event has been dubbed "Bells of Peace." In Carleton Place additional Remembrance Day plans include songs performed by a choir during the traditional morning ceremonies and a tribute to local native and flying ace Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown. He is the Allied pilot who shot down famed German flyer Baron Manfred von Richthofen (the war's highest scoring fighter pilot with 80 "victories") on April 21, 1918. Every community has a slightly different plan although church bells will be rung in each case. In our
We’re there when news happens in your community. FIND BREAKING NEWS DAILY AT INSIDEOTTAWAVALLEY.COM
town the bell ringing will be heralded by the sirens of police and fire units which will sound for 30 seconds before the bells toll. Also included in the multifaceted ceremony of remembrance, relatives of the 47 Carleton Place residents who died during WW I will ring hand bells at the Cenotaph while the church bells sound. Communities across the country have similar plans for this very special day including of course the Bells of Peace initiative. I think it should be noted that nearly 650,000 Canadians served the country and the British Empire during what is often called "the Great War." In addition hundreds of thousands of men and women supported the effort through their work in war industry or other necessary activities related to the conflict. That is significant because, in 1918 for example, Canada was a relatively small country in terms of population with just over eight million residents. By comparison more than 37 million people currently call Canada home! Today, considering what is happening in our modern world, peace seems like a pipe dream. To me it's more elusive than ever. But this Sunday, Remembrance Day 2018 and the 100th anniversary of a distant war, we have an opportunity to listen to the Bells of Peace and pray that, somehow, peace will come to our topsy-turvy world! STONE MARTEN FURS DID NOT SIT WELL WITH YOUNG MARY SUCH GARMENTS WERE NOT COMMON IN RENFREW COUNTY IN 1930S, COLUMNIST WRITES MARY COOK Column
It would be the second time I would see a set of Stone Marten Furs. The first time was when Mother's friend from New York came to visit and she had a set around her neck, which I was sure were alive. Sitting in the back seat of the Model T, I had a good look at them, and realized they were dead as door nails! Why anyone would wear a pair of dead animals around their neck was beyond me. And then I saw, for the second time in my life, another pair, and again they were draped around someone's neck. Mother had taken me with her to a meeting in Renfrew, where a bunch of women who belonged to local Women's Institutes were gathered together in a church hall to talk about what they would do to help the poor families in the area. I couldn't imagine anyone poorer than we were, but there they sat discussing ways and means of lending a helping hand to those who didn't have enough money to even put food on their tables. We ate like kings on the farm. There was always a smoke house full of meat, chickens, geese and ducks, a sauerkraut barrel and
Right
salt pork in the summer kitchen, and enough vegetables, pickles and preserves in the cellar to feed half of Renfrew County. We had lots of food. We just didn't have any money. Well, that day in a church hall, a woman who seemed to be running things, was sitting right in front of us, and around her neck was a set of Marten furs, exactly like the ones Mother's friend from New York wore! Right away I lost interest in the talk from the woman at the front of the hall. I leaned forward in my chair so that I was just inches away from the little beady black eyes that were looking back at me. I could tell they weren't real, but tiny little glass beads. And the mouth of one Stone Marten was firmly attached to the body of the one beside it. Like it was biting it! I felt the eyes were staring right at me, but any way I moved in my chair, I couldn't get away from them, and it was almost like I was responsible for their being wrapped around someone's neck. I had no idea what animal the furs had come from, but I was quite sure we didn't have any like them in Renfrew County. I was dying to touch the one that was stretched right across the back of the woman's neck. But then I wondered, what if it came to life? So I had to content myself with just staring at its little beady black eyes. It seemed the meeting was about to come to a close, because the woman who was standing at the front of the hall announced that tea would be served, and asked the woman with the animals around her neck if she would

say grace. It looked like she was more than happy to oblige, because she jumped up, set her purse on the floor, and unwrapped the furs from around her neck, flinging them onto the back of her chair. They missed connecting, and landed square on my lap, now with four black beady eyes staring at me. I let a war-hoop out of me, flung the furs onto the floor, and slid over to Mother who wasn't at all pleased at my carry-on. I wouldn't even bend down to pick them up, and I couldn't wait to get back to Northcote to tell everyone about the woman who wore animals wrapped around her neck. My brother Emerson didn't believe me and said I was making the whole story up. As always my sister Audrey settled the issue once and for all. She had a copy of a movie magazine, well read, and she opened it up to a page where one of the famous stars of the day was wearing a set of Martin Furs exactly like the ones I had just seen in Renfrew. As far as I was concerned, if I never again came close to another set of furs wrapped around someone's neck as long as I lived, it would be too soon for me! SMITHS FALLS' CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS IS BACK EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com After a year's hiatus, the Celebration of Lights is back for its fifth season. The annual light display in Smiths Falls' Victoria Park was cancelled last year due to construction. But, this year, the highly anticipated holiday displays will be back. "It was disappointing to have to cancel last year's event due to the construc-
tion in the basin, but we look forward to bringing the event back and making it one to remember," said Tracey Pankow, president of the volunteer organization behind the event, Together Smiths Falls, in a statement to this newspaper. Together Smiths Falls says that there has been more interest from businesses and community partners in participating this year, either by in-kind sponsorship or in adding a display to the park. "We already have 18 applications from local churches and businesses, plus 13 new displays that we
had purchased for our 2017 event to add this year," said Richards, chair of the committee, in the same statement. "Plus, we have a very special, unique to Smiths Falls display that we commissioned by a local welder, Jeremy O'Grady, to make for us that I am sure will be a hit!" Opening night for the Celebration of Lights will be on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free to all to

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
