EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com In an era where online shopping and fast-fashion are on trend, one full-service shoe store in Smiths Falls has not gone out of style. Smith's Shoes has been a staple on Beckwith Street for 75 years and has no plan of changing its commitment to provide clients with high-quality footwear, shoe fittings and service with a personal touch. "There's so much online business and quick in and out stores we're not like that," said Cy Wells, who has owned the iconic shoe store with his wife, Janet, since 2006. Wells has been in the shoe business for 38 years. He's seen shoe trends come and go. But one thing has remained constant: a good fit is key. That's why at Smith's Shoes, shoe fittings - largely unheard of these days - are a must. "I can guarantee you that there See SMITH’S, page 29

LEGION UNVEILS PLAQUE DEDICATED TO HONG KONG VETERANS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Soldiers who fought in the Battle of Hong Kong during the Second World War were remembered in Smiths Falls on Saturday, April 27. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 organized a plaque unveiling in partnership with the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association (HKVCA) to honour those who fought against the overwhelming power of an invading Japanese force from Dec. 8 to 25, 1941. Some 2,000 Canadian troops fought in the battle; 290 were killed. Another 264 Canadian troops would die over the next four years, amid the inhumane conditions of Japanese prisoner-ofwar camps, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia.

Evelyn Harford/Metroland Left: Hong Kong veterans were remembered at the Smiths Falls Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 with a plaque honouring those who fought in the battle, which was unveiled on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Pictured here, Gail Angel, past president of the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association, (left) and Stan Lasenba, the legion member who spearheaded the idea to recognize those who fought in the battle (right); Right: Bob Atkinson, of the Lanark Highlands Royal Canadian Legion Branch 395, attended the plaque dedication to Hong Kong veterans at the Smiths Falls legion on Saturday, April 27, 2019. He had three uncles who fought in the Battle of Hong Kong. The battle was largely overshadowed by the Attack on Pearl Harbor, which occurred on Dec. 7, 1941. Branch 95 legion member, Stan Lasenba, who spearheaded the idea to

recognize those who fought in the battle and were taken prisoner in Hong Kong, is glad to see those who fought getting recognition locally. His father, Earl, was one of them. Lasenba was

eight years old when his father died in a car crash in 1947 after coming back from the war. Lasenba lays a wreath at the cenotaph each year on Remembrance Day in memory of those who

fought in the battle. "This is great," he said of Saturday's dedication. "I'm really proud." Bob Atkinson, of Lanark Highlands Royal Canadian Legion Branch 395, whose three uncles

fought in the Battle of Hong Kong, came to see the plaque unveiled. "I'm quite happy to see a plaque here honouring them," he said. Atkinson said his uncles, who all enlisted in Winnipeg, seldom talked about the battle, which was a vicious and unequal struggle. "They had grit," said Gail Angel, past president of the HKVCA, at the dedication. "They were throwing back the Japanese's grenades when that's all they had left." Angel's own grandfather fought in the Battle of Hong Kong. Plaques have been unveiled at legions across the country in honour of the Hong Kong veterans. The newest is now hanging at the legion in Smiths Falls. – with files from Laurie Weir

The road ahead for Beckwith Street's redevelopment has just gotten bumpier. Town staff have recommended that council reject the only bid received for Phase One of Beckwith Street's redevelopment. The bid for the first three blocks of the main street's redevelopment came in well above the town's budget, which is why staff have recommended council reject it. The bid from Ottawa Greenbelt Construction Company Ltd. came in at $9.5-million - a far cry from the $5.7-million the town had budgeted for the first phase of the project. It was news that disappointed not only council members, but town staff too.

THE ISSUE: BECKWITH STREET BID CAME IN WAY ABOVE BUDGET LOCAL IMPACT: THIS COULD MEAN DELAYS AND CHANGE OF SCOPE FOR THE MAIN STREET'S RECONSTRUCTION

Dunlop said after the bid was received it was reviewed by both town staff and Parsons, the company tasked with the design work for the project. He said upon review they both concluded that many of the unit prices included in the tender, such as water main per linear meter, granulars, and asphalt were uncharacteristically high. Dunlop said because the town only received one bid for the project it's challenging to determine how competitive the bid actually was. Dunlop said there were more companies that had expressed interest in the project, but simply didn't have the capacity to do the work. At this point, he said it's unclear if the current market, where very few general contractors have the ca-

DNE RESIDENTS PERSEVERE THROUGH HISTORIC FLOODING ON MISSISSIPPI LAKE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Sam Cray calls it his spring gym. Cray, while also suffering from kidney stones and two degenerative disks, spent 10 days stacking sandbag after sandbag around his cottage in Drummond/North Elmsley in a battle against the rising water levels on Mississippi Lake. "Some people go to the gym, I sandbag," he said. "You've got to keep your humour." It's Cray's humour, stubborn dedication, proactive approach and a bit of luck, that kept his residence on Grasshopper Point relatively unscathed behind a fortress of 1,000 sandbags. The sandbag stacking marathon took its toll on the 61-year-old who's been on that stretch of lake since he was 17 years old. "I'm broken," said Cray, on Monday, April 29, as he looked out upon the water that's finally starting to recede from around his cottage. "I'm an old guy and this is no fun." This is the worse flood he's seen since the historic floods of 1998. It's estimated that at least 50 full-time residences and seasonal cottages have been impacted in Drummond/North Elmsley; a number

adding to the thousands of people fighting back against flooding this spring in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. Like many others, Cray and his wife worked tirelessly to stop water from flowing into their cottage. "My place is far from being a milliondollar home, but it's my home," he said. Last Wednesday, a wall caved in letting water into their crawl space. But, thanks to neighbours who helped rebuild the wall, Cray's furnace was saved, and the flow of water stopped. In 2017, the area was also hit by flooding - but not near the levels seen this year. Two years ago, Cray stacked sandbags, but the water only came high enough to touch them. This year, water came up four or five feet - so deep he had to stack a sandbag wall nine high with six pumps running at the water's peak. "It's a nightmare for everybody," he said. Cray said the help offered by the township was too little, too late. After receiving calls for help from residents last week, more than 20,000 sandbags were deployed by township staff. But Cray said by that point, he'd already been sandbagging to prepare for the wa-

"We've lived on the land and chose to live on the lake but there has to be some accountability to the township," he said. Though, Cray said, he was thankful when the help came. "We had volunteer firefighters out, which was a huge, huge help," he said.

Cray hopes next time the help will come more quickly, with a call out for volunteers earlier. The experience dealing with this year's flood has caused him to question his dream of retiring at the cottage. After this spring's ordeal, he'll seriously be thinking about selling the cottage - a decision that wouldn't come easily. "It would kill me to sell," he said. But before Cray can make any choices, another battle awaits: the cleanup. It's something the township is thinking about, too. Drummond/North Elmsley Reeve Steve Fournier said council is meeting next week to discuss cleanup efforts. He said there may be a possibility that the township could provide certain reimbursements, like dumping fees. But, said Fournier, that is a decision for council to make. "I'm sympathetic, but people have to realize they live on a flood plain," he said. "It's going to happen again." Fournier's message to residents that live in flood-prone areas: be prepared. He said people need to have good quality sump pumps, pumps for around your residence and generators. He said the township did what they could to help residents in their time of need. "We did our best," he said. "We had volunteers out, we had sandbags out." Fouriner said the day the township got the call for assistance on Grasshopper Point last Wednesday and resources were deployed. Community sandbagging efforts started the next day. The township is still continuing with patrols. Fournier said that only one evacuation in the township took place because of flooding. He said an elderly woman had to be taken from her residence by volunteer firefighters last Friday. Fournier said the township has also applied for the provincial Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program, a funding assistance program for full-time residential property owners. Residents are asked to keep their receipts for flood-related expenses. "This is going to take time," Fournier said. Municipal tipping fees won't be charged for used sandbags, although fees are currently still in place for all other waste. Residents using the waste site to dispose of flood-damaged materials are encouraged to save receipts in the event that refunds may be given at a later date. Fournier said that if residents have questions they should contact the township office. For more on this story visit www.insideottawavalley.com.

We reached out to Lanark County chief administrative officer (CAO) Kurt Greaves for this edition of JUST ASKING. His answers are below. If you could be any animal what would it be and why? Greaves: Definitely a river otter. They have speed, agility, grace, playfulness ... amazing creatures. What is your favourite summer activity? Greaves: Paddle boarding at our family cottage in the early morning when the lake is flat calm.

It would be the ultimate camouflage. What is the most interesting thing you have in your wallet? Greaves: It is a good day ... I have a few pictures of our Queen. What TV sitcom family would you want to be a member of ? Greaves: Modern Fami-

I am Turtle to my high school friends, and my rugby friends call me Kurtie. Quality of life or quantity of life? Greaves: It is all about quality. I had a very bad health experience six years ago. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Thanks to modern medicine I have been in remission ever since, but it destroys all your myths about invincibility and you quickly learn to make every day count. What is the last item you purchased? Greaves: Tony Lama

cowboy boots (size 11D). What makes you laugh? Greaves: Comedians Joe Rogan, David Chapelle and the late John Candy. What was the last photo you took? Greaves: (Barack) Obama for his leadership, Tom Brady for his worth ethic, my father for being my role model and my wife for everything she does.

NOAL PANTRY CLOSES DOORS IN SMITHS FALLS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com A local restaurant is closing its doors on Russell Street, Smiths Falls, citing low revenue, and personal reasons. Laurie Anne Brennan, owner/operator of the popular eatery, NOAL (Natural, organic, artisan and local) Pantry, gave notice to her customers on a Facebook post April 23. "It is with much regret I am announcing NOAL Pantry, a local food eatery is no longer open," she wrote in the notice. "I have worked hard to build a viable successful business, but with lower revenue than needed for sustainability, and for personal reasons, I have made the decision to close my doors." The notice, shared some 100 times from Facebook, was not well received.

"Ahead of your time for Smiths Falls," wrote Charles Catchpole. "That town doesn't know what its got till its gone. You're a great chef who put many smiles on many faces with amazing nutritious, elegant and tasty meals. Hold your head high." Patricia Potvin echoed similar thoughts. "So very sorry to hear that one of my favourite restaurants has closed! Where will I ever get a breakfast that comes even close to the deliciousness of yours? That root hash! Your raspberry pie! And the cinnamon rolls! The quality, the care and craftsmanship you put into your dishes are beyond compare. Thanks for the food memories." With a focus on natural, organic, artisan and local ingredients, NOAL Pantry provided the community with a menu that was fo-

She catered events and sold pies and baked goods wholesale. She also offered Keto options, and nut-free baking. In a Q&A interview with the Record News last fall,

Brennan said her inspiration came from chefs and cooks she'd worked with over more than 35 years in the hospitality business, and from farmers and food producers she worked with

every day. As for baking, she offered traditional family recipes passed down from her mother and sisters, who are wonderful home bakers, she said. Brennan had offered

some highlights of her career, which included: catering for Tweed when Martha Stewart was the guest of honour. "Rumour has it, she liked my mixed berry pie and a tomato salad using local pink heirloom tomatoes from Bluegrass Farms, basil from Burt's Greenhouses, garlic from Highland Organic and sunflower oil from Kricklewood Farms." Brennan further stated in her closing notice, that she appreciated the wonderful customer base, "the many who took time to recommend NOAL Pantry to friends and family." She offered thanks to Parkview Homes for their faith in her food and for creating a beautiful space at 6 Russell St. E., in which to work. "Most importantly, I am blessed to have had my sisters and my parents support me on this restaurant journey." – with files from Hollie Pratt Campbell

ROAD AHEAD FOR BECKWITH UNCERTAIN Continued from page 3

pacity to complete a project of Beckwith Street's scale, came into play with the procurement for this project. Dunlop is set to bring back another report to council that will outline potential next steps for the project, with one of the core objectives being figuring out how the town can safeguard the $933,000 Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund grant they've already received for the underground work on Beckwith. There is also an opportunity to acquire more money for the project from the province. Council learned that the Connecting Links funding is back for 2019 - news they'd been eagerly waiting for. The town had previously applied for Connecting Links funding for the Beckwith Street project but were unsuccessful.

The hope is that the town can apply again. The town has until May 31 to apply for this funding. Malcolm Morris, the town's chief administrative officer, said according to information they've received from the province, municipalities would find out if their funding applications were successful in June, but it wouldn't be until July that a funding agreement would be in place. He said the town couldn't incur costs on the project until a funding agreement is in place. Council will officially vote on whether or not to accept or reject the bid during an upcoming council meeting on Monday, May 6. A full report outlining options will be presented at an upcoming committee of the whole meeting. At that time, once more information is received, council will begin to discuss the road ahead for Beckwith Street including whether or not

council should move forward and apply for funding. "Part of me thinks there is a little bit of karma behind this and it gives us a position to slow down and not rush this," said Coun. Niki Dwyer, who insisted that a public consultation be part of the plan presented by the town in their suggested options for moving forward. "Now that we have a pause, I look at it as an opportunity to listen to everybody," said Coun. Jay Brennan.

RED CROSS OFFERS HELP FOR FLOOD VICTIMS Recent heavy rains across the province have swollen lakes and rivers in several watersheds and resulted in water ponding and flooding on many properties. Flooded areas are causing citizens to sandbag against rising waters on some properties across Lanark Leeds Grenville. Lanark, Carleton Place, Beckwith and Drummond/ North Elmsley residents in particular, have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past week or so, and efforts to sandbag properties has been ongoing. If you are experiencing floods to your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit offers some advice. Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark Health Unit is advising those whose wells are directly affected by these conditions to boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria. If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system. Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing. Helpful tips: • Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould. • Ask for professional advice during clean up. The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the Ottawa area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. At the request of several municipalities, the Red Cross is providing a variety of services for affected households, on a case-by-base assessment basis of immediate needs. If you have been affected by flooding in Ontario, please call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582, Monday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.

The Township of Rideau Lakes was incorporated on January 1, 1998 by amalgamating the former townships of North Crosby, South Crosby, Bastard, South Burgess and South Elmsley with the village of Newboro. Rideau Lakes lies in the northwest corner of Leeds and Grenville, and is geographically the largest municipality in the county. Farming, tourism, and service industries form the backbone of the local economy. The many tourist attractions in Rideau Lakes, including historic trails, the stone arch dam at Jones Falls, and the Rideau Waterway, are also an important part of the township's economy. The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada's leading granting foundations. OTF awarded more than $100 million to some 629 last year to build healthy and vibrant communities in Ontario.

The Township of Rideau Lakes welcomed members of the public to Lorne Park in Newboro April 23 to announce the receipt of an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Capital grant in the amount of $142,900 for upgrades and improvements to Lorne Park in Newboro. Local MPP Steve Clark and OTF Grant Review Team member Rai King were on hand for the official announcement, and heard more about the plans for the new field and its impact on recreation in the community. "I'm pleased the Ontario Trillium Foundation is making this significant investment in Lorne Park. Our public parks are important to the quality of life of residents and help promote and support healthy, active lifestyles," said Clark, MPP for LeedsGrenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. "These improvements will

ensure people of all ages can continue to find a safe place to take part in recreational activities or just enjoy our beautiful outdoors for generations to come." Lorne Park is located on John Street in the Village of Newboro and will receive much needed upgrades to the washrooms, soccer field and baseball diamond. The plan also includes the installation of a new pickleball court, pavilion/gazebo, new bleachers and picnic tables, lighting, soccer nets, a small storage building, fencing and new signage. "The residents of Rideau Lakes will benefit from the planned improvements for years to come, said Arie Hoogenboom, mayor of the Township of Rideau Lakes. Evelyn Harford/Metroland Parking meters on Beckwith Street.

VETERANS TO GET FREE PARKING IN TOWN EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Veterans will soon be able to park for free in Smiths Falls. Council agreed at their committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, April 23, to exempt anyone with a valid veteran's licence plate from parking fees at metered and other municipal parking sites in town something the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 had asked for last year. "I think it's a great gesture for us to do," said Coun. Jay Brennan. "We should do it as soon as possible." Brennan expressed that he felt badly that the issue

wasn't brought up sooner. The legion originally made their request last fall before the current council was sworn in. At that time, the previous council decided to let the newly-elected council make the decision on the matter, which had laid dormant until now. Coun. Niki Dwyer said it would have been nice for the town announce the free parking as part of last year's Nov. 11 recognition ceremony, a suggestion the legion had made last October. Jim Jenkins, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95, said the idea had been to introduce the free parking for veterans in conjunction with the

centenary of the first Armistice Day last November - a significant day for Canada and the town, which sent many citizens to serve in the First World War. "It's an appreciation of veterans," said Jenkins of council's recent decision, which follows in the footsteps of other municipalities that have made similar gestures. In 2015, the City of Hamilton began to allow veterans to park for free in their municipality. The City of Brockville chooses not to ticket vehicles with registered veteran's plates. Council is expected to make their final approval of the parking exception for veterans at their next council meeting.

PERTH BOY CARRIES TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS FLAG AT PLAYOFF GAME LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It was a bittersweet ending for the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday afternoon in Toronto as they were defeated by the Boston Bruins 4-2 to tie their NHL playoff series at three games each. But it was a 10-out-of-10 for a 10-year-old Perth boy, who was a flag bearer for the Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Sunday, April 21. "It was pretty exciting," Jaden White said. His mom, Angie, had entered her son's name into the Scotiabank Skaters Contest, and as luck would have it, Jaden's name was chosen for flag bearer duties for Game 6 of the playoff series between the Leafs and the Boston Bruins. The Scotiabank Skaters Contest gives youth the opportunity for a once in life-

time experience to stand alongside their hockey heroes, either in the NHL or minor league level. "When she told me I didn't believe her," Jaden said with a grin, as he peered out from under the brim of his new TML hat. A big Toronto Maple Leafs' fan, especially of Auston Matthews, Jaden even wears his idol's No. 34 on his own hockey jersey. The right winger for the Atom Wings did a fist bump with the NHL superstar who was heading to the ice. He also caught the eye and shoulder tap of Boston's Brad Marchand, which was filmed on Coach's Corner with Don Cherry. "That was a highlight for sure," said Rick, who along with Angie and their daughter Haley, all made the trip to Toronto. The family met Darryl

The young lad did a couple practice rounds; the first on Wednesday, April 17. The family went down again early on game day for a second practise at 11 a.m. on Saturday. And since the

game started at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jaden had to be at the rink at 2 p.m. to get ready for the big event. The family was given four game tickets, and $100 spending money, along

with three passes to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Scotiabank "really did it up," Rick said. "They treated us like royalty." On the way home from the game, the family took GO Transit from the arena to Oshawa and people on board were asking about Jaden's experience at the game. Once they found out he was a flag bearer, they all wanted photos with him. "I felt like I was famous," he laughed. Jaden said his Grade 5 classmates at St. John Catholic Elementary School in Perth, were also excited for him. Besides hockey, he also enjoys golf, and "maybe one day," he said, he'll be playing for the Leafs. The Leafs were eventually defeated from this round of playoffs on Tuesday, April 23, when Boston won Game 7, 5-1.

The Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) is hosting a rain barrel fundraiser to raise funds for a monarch butterfly garden that it is planning on the REAL Deal site. Rain barrels are just $55, and are a great way to save water and benefit your plants. Rain barrels are placed under a downspout to collect rainwater run-off from a roof and store it until it is needed. This free source of water is great for your plants, because it is free of fluoride and chlorine and the warmer temperature does not shock your plants like tap water does. Most people use the water on their gardens, but other uses include washing pets, washing vehicles or filling ponds. Using a rain barrel can reduce erosion near your home and reduce water going to storm sew-

fills. Looking for ways to recycle household waste that isn't available through recycling programs offered through our municipalities has become really important to me. Lately, I've become more and more critical of things I'm throwing in the trash. Before, I wouldn't have thought twice about tossing anoth-

instead of throwing them out can make a difference. I've now got a box for people in our newsroom to put their dead pens in. I've committed to disposing of them through this recycling program. It'll be interesting how many pens, pencils, highlighters and markers we can divert from the landfill over the next couple of years. GIVE YOUR MOM THE PERFECT MOTHER'S DAY GIFT Your mother gave you the gift of life, and now you can return the favour. Thanks to the Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation's (RVCF) special occasions tree planting program, you can skip the grocery store bouquet and plant an environmental legacy in your mom's honour, instead. The trees are planted across the Rideau Valley watershed, from Frontenac, to Smiths Falls, to downtown Ottawa. Once planted, the trees help to fight erosion, manage floods and keep contaminants out of our rivers and lakes. Staff tend to the new trees, helping them grow to maturity so they can thrive for decades - much like your mother did for you. A single tree costs $25, while a small grove of five is only $100. Ten trees costs $150 and a family grove of 25 trees costs $250 - just $10 a tree. Online ordering makes it easy and fast. FESTIVAL HOSTS COFFEE HOUSE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS Young musicians from across the region are invited to play in the Stewart Park Festival Youth Coffeehouse, where they can compete for a chance to perform at the award-winning festival this summer. The coffee house is an invitation to all youth musicians living within Lanark County and Rideau Lakes. The coffee house concert gives youth - ages 14 to 21 years of age - the chance to perform in front of a live audience while auditioning for a spot at the Festival's Youth Showcase on Friday, July 19, 2019. The coffee house will allow each performer to perform two songs in a set and the winning performance will earn $300, as well as a set on the Stewart Park Festival stage this summer with a paid honorarium. The coffee house is a new approach from the original youth coffee house design, which welcomed school-designated musicians from across the region to compete and represent their school. The shift this year for the coffee house is

an attempt to bring more musicians to the stage. "We love the style and versatile musical offerings our local youth have brought to the stage in the past, and we wanted to open it up to the greater public to give more youth more opportunities to perform," says John McKenty, chair of the Stewart Park Festival committee. Past performers have ranged from solo acts to five-piece bands. "We're really interested to see a variety of musical acts from across the region," says James Keelaghan, music director with the Stewart Park Festival committee. "We can't wait to see what our entrants bring to the stage and show how much musical talent comes to the stage from our youth." Once the coffee house performers are finished, a group of judges will name the winner, who will receive the monetary prize and a chance to perform at the Stewart Park Festival. The event will take place at the Perth Tea Room on Gore Street on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free. To register and learn more about the coffee house, visit stewartparkfestival.com. The first 10 musicians to register will get on the lineup for the coffee house. Submitted by Stewart Park Festival

Smiths Falls flings into spring with the annual Spring Fling Running Thing. Over 350 people registered for the 2K, 5K, 10K and halfmarathon races held this year on Sunday, April 28. Each year the event raises money for the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation to help purchase muchneeded equipment for the hospital. "It's been a great year," said race organizer, Cory Turnbull. Lise Smith, executive director of the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation, said once this year's equipment needs list is compiled and the total money raised from the race is tallied they'll decide where the funds will be allocated. In past years, the race has helped purchase day chairs, a patient lift and vital signs machines. "For patient care, every piece matters," said Smith. Each year, the race rakes in between $6,000 and $8,000 for the hospital. Since the event began in 2012, over $50,000 has been raised.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MAGIC AT ST. JOHN Hailed as one of the most successful professional magicians in Canada, Ted and Marion Outerbridge are set to bring his performance on stage to Perth at St. John Catholic High School on Friday, May 3. A professionally orchestrated theatrical production with over 20 customdesigned illusions, OUTERBRIDGE - Pure Illusion is a high-energy magical adventure for both adult and family audiences. Recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic shows of its kind, critics have hailed Ted and Marion Outerbridge as "the most successful magicians in Canada" and "champions of magic." As the largest and most

successful touring illusion show in the country, it has received both the Award of Excellence from Ontario Contact and the Touring Artist of the Year award from the B.C. Touring Council. The show will act as a fundraiser for the St. John Elementary School Parent Council who will use the money toward eco-friendly initiatives including a new water station and the kindergarten forest program. "We're excited to bring a show that'll be great for the whole family," says St. John Elementary School Principal Shawn Retty. "It's a win-win as we can enjoy a night of magic while also raising funds for important initiatives within our school."

OUTERBRIDGE SHOW OUTERBRIDGE - Pure Illusion takes its audience on a bizarre and fascinating journey through time. Within seconds of taking the stage, the Outerbridges fuse their revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry to hold viewers spellbound. With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, the performers and spectators travel back in time together. Keeping their audience enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, the Outerbridges create an experience that far exceeds the expectations of every spectator. Ted Outerbridge says he's looking forward to

bringing the show to Perth - especially since they're new to the area. "We just moved to Smiths Falls from Montreal last December, and we're loving it," says Outerbridge. "This will be the first public show we've done in the area, so we're excited to bring it to the community. Outerbridge says the custom show will be highly visual and perfect for the whole family. "Five-year-olds are even going to enjoy it, as they won't get bored," explains Outerbridge, adding that he performs alongside his wife, Marion who is a dancer. "Marion is a dancer who performs magic and I'm a magician who doesn't perform dance," he jokes.

OPINION

DOWNTOWN ARENA MAY NOT BE ANSWER FOR SENS TEAM HAS PROBLEMS BUT THE ARENA ISN'T ONE OF THEM, WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE JEFF MAGUIRE Column

This has been a particularly difficult 12 months for the modern day Ottawa Senators. Try a difficult year and a half ! The National Hockey League team and in particular controversial owner Eugene Melnyk is facing a firestorm of fan discontent. They're trying to navigate their way through what amounts to a public relations disaster involving the trading of four star players and the apparent collapse of their much-touted downtown arena project. The recent list of disappointments involving the

team is a lengthy one. Little wonder people who were once Sens' diehards are now boycotting the team. I know some personally. The fallback position for Sens' organization is to stake their immediate future on the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC) arena in Kanata and their claim of an on-ice rebuild which GM Pierre Dorion insists will soon pay dividends. I don't know about the rebuild of course. Ahead of the NHL draft it is pretty hard to say how that shapes up? As for the downtown arena versus CTC, if you thought I was going to rail against the Kanata facility (Sens' home since January 1996) you are mistaken. I realize an arena on

downtown LeBreton Flats has significant support and I am sure that, initially at least, it would be a big success. New high tech arenas usually are. But what about the longterm? I'm among a growing number of Ottawa and area people, mostly Senators' fans, who are expressing concerns about whether a downtown arena would be viable over the long haul? I've heard all the arguments for the LeBreton project and I'm sure many are true. However I spoke to a lot of people before writing this article, Sens' season ticket holders, semi-regular attendees of NHL games in the city and more casual hockey fans. I also heard an interesting exchange recently between two wellknown Ottawa radio hosts. All beg to differ when it comes to moving the team downtown. They insist the

majority of Sens' regulars live in the west end of Ottawa particularly in Kanata and Stittsville. They also say many supporters regularly travel to games from communities west of Ottawa including Carleton Place, Perth, Smiths Falls, Arnprior and Renfrew to name a few. Considering Ottawa's public transit situation many people I have talked to expressed concern about a downtown hockey arena. They say they would rarely attend games downtown, simply because the transit options are inconvenient. They don't see that improving with the arrival of light rail. What the folks I've talked to would like to see is a better parking arrangement at CTC. Translated that means "cheaper" parking. Others would like the focus put on providing

quick and convenient city bus transport to and from the arena. Designated parking lots and mass bus transit, such as that now used by the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks for games at TD Place Stadium. That arrangement works well for fans who want to see a similar situation for Senators' games. True, the Sens have lots of problems and hopefully those will be ironed out over the course of time. I don't think the arena is one of them. CTC is still a firstrate facility and why couldn't a new arena be built near the current stadium?

ONTARIO COLD CASES THIS WEEK: The 2003 disappearance of Pamela Holopainen has left her family longing for answers. insideottawavalley.com

The focus should be on getting fans to and from hockey games and other events at CTC more seamlessly. Make it convenient for people to use public transportation and reduce parking rates as much as possible. That way when the team improves, as it surely will over the course of time, ownership will be catering to a happier, more motivated fan base.

FAMILY 'ATE LIKE KINGS' AND DIDN'T KNOW IT AUNT LILY MAY WELL HAVE BEEN RIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Aunt Lily said we ate like kings. Uncle Dick, Aunt Lily and my young cousin Richard had come from Ottawa for a visit. Looking over the dinner table, she shook her head. I knew little about kings, but I was well aware of princesses. Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose's glossy picture hung on the wall at the foot of my bed. It came from Scott's Hardware on a big calendar and I laid claim to it as soon as Mother brought it home after New Year's. I doubted very much they ate fried pork or bread pudding! I know Aunt Lily called our evening meal dinner, but on the farm, we ate breakfast in the morning, dinner at noon, supper at night, and lunch was what we had before we went to bed. And that day, we were about to sit down to dinner. It was early spring - a

Saturday. Aunt Lily would never come to the farm on Sunday and miss mass in Ottawa, so we were eating dinner so that they could get on their way back home before dark. She looked over the table again, and once more shook her head. "Kings. Just like kings" she said, sitting down in front of a steaming bowl of creamed potatoes, a platter of thick fried pork chops, turnips, sauerkraut, sweet pickles, and a pile of homemade bread. Over on the bake table, a baked bread pudding waited to be served later with freshly whipped cream. This was all ordinary food to me ... everyday mealtime, and I couldn't imagine where Aunt Lily got the idea we were eating like kings! Wasn't this the Depression? Weren't we supposed to be poor? Wasn't it only rich people who ate like kings? Like the Stewarts or old Doctor Murphy in Renfrew. Why Aunt Lily thought we ate like kings was beyond me! I decided then and there I would take a special heed of what we ate for the next

day or so. Maybe we weren't so poor after all. I couldn't help noticing too that when the Schumans got in the car to head back to Ottawa, the back seat was full. There were two freshly plucked chickens, a bag of potatoes, two cabbages from the cellar, and a jar of sauerkraut. It was food I was pretty sure they didn't need. After all, didn't they live in the city? So, if we ate like kings, why didn't we have money? It just didn't add up to me. I took special note of our meals for the next day to see if there was any truth to what Aunt Lily said. Every last morsel of food from dinner that day had been eaten, so, as usual, there were no leftovers. Supper that night was made up of a big fry pan of sausages from the smoke house, potatoes, cabbage salad, the usual plate of bread and butter, and a glass bowl of raspberry preserves. Of course, I took special note of the lunch before we went to bed. Father polished off the last of the raspberry preserves, three slices of toast, a cou-

ple cups of green tea, and a fresh muffin Mother had already made for the next day. Nothing special about any of that, I thought ... and certainly nothing there that would appeal to a king! Breakfast never varied. A bowl of porridge with cream and brown sugar and toast and jam. For Father though, his breakfast was fried potatoes, eggs, and a good strip of salt pork, and of course cup after cup of green tea. While we ate, Mother packed our school lunches, and I knew there would be a sandwich of cold beef, buttered muffins freshly made the night before, and molasses cookies. As hard as I tried, I just couldn't picture Princess Elizabeth and Margaret Rose going off to school with the same lunch Mother packed in a

brown paper bag for us. Of course, bad Marguirite would have storebought bread and storebought butter for her sandwich, and an orange. Always she had an orange, and once she even brought a banana! The only fruit we ever had was when a relative brought something when on a visit, and once a year, at Christmas, we might get an orange in our stocking. As I thought about what we put in our stomachs, I figured maybe we didn't have money, but we never went to bed hungry. Just

maybe Aunt Lily was right after all. Maybe we did eat like kings and didn't even know it. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? MEET THE PETS OF THE WEEK AT LANARK ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Lanark Animal Welfare Society would like to introduce you to this week's cats that are up for adoption at the shelter. Meet Raven, Lila and Lucas. These three, sixmonth-old, siblings were shy, scared and nervous when they first arrived at

the shelter and would just run away and hide when approached by people. With lots of love and patience from staff and volunteers, they have really come a long way! They're still shy at first, but it doesn't take long before they relax and enjoy affection and even start purring and get playful. They really enjoy each oth-

er's company so they would each do best in a home with another cat and with a patient family who'll give them the time they'll probably need to adjust. Follow us at www.facebook.com/lanarkanimals and/or lanarkanimals.ca. LAWS is located at 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.

Submitted/LAWS From lefft: Raven is a six-month-old female, fixed; Lila is a spayed female. She's about six months of age; Lucas is a neutered male, about six months of age, and is available at LAWS.

PERSAUD, Dr. Bhisma Pitama

“Satnarine” It is with sadness the family announces the death, from an unexpected illness of Dr. B. P. Persaud (Sat), in Hospice Renfrew on Tuesday 23rd April. A proud graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He practiced in Banbridge Northern Ireland, and Guyana before settling in Arnprior where for 50 years he cared for many generations of patients from first breath to last. For 17 years he was Director of Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. Medicine was his life and priority. His ethics and kind commitment was inspirational to many. His relational with the nursing staff at the Arnprior Hospital was an excellent one. Especially the OR staff for when he cooked delicious food for special occasions, on days he was assisting. When away from his medicine he was found relaxing on the golf course working towards his eleventh hole in one. 10 holes in 1 was good but 11 would have been better. He was an avid reader and consummate artist. He enjoyed traveling to the Soviet Union and Scandinavia in the 70s, African Safaris, South American rain forest, as a member of Remote Area Medical Corp. to bring medicine to the indigenous people; Bali, Sepang and other parts of Asia. His family Danesh (Toronto), Devan and Mirko (Arnprior), Rohan and Etsuko, Ellie and George (Sydney Australia) Aran and Felicio, Sophie and Hannah (Seoul, South Korea) Thara and Graeme, Norah, Holly and Saoirse (Dublin Ireland). Must continue on their life’s journey without him. We would like to express our deep-felt gratitude to Dr. Neilson, the nurses and volunteers at the Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to our loved one during the last days of his life. Dr. Persaud’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation took place on Friday evening, April 26th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning, April 27th from 9:45 to 10:45. A Tribute to Dr. Persaud followed in the Pilon Family Chapel at 11 a.m. For those who wish to honour his work and memory support for Families de la Esperance Puerta Vallarta. (Families at the dump) www.familiesatthedump.org or Renfrew Hospice for their exceptional mission would be appreciated - in lieu of flowers. insideottawavalley.com

His house on Delaware Avenue in Ottawa, where he made many lasting friendships, and where he accomplished the bulk of his work. He was particularly proud of his work on Carleton’s Steacie Building is one of which he was particularly proud. His house in BurgessWood, Perth, which he redesigned himself and has been a place that drew his family and friends together for many years. He is deeply missed by friends and family. Mourning are his wife of 62 years, Elspeth Wishart Menendez; elder son Charlie, his wife Christine Post, and their three daughters Katie, Abby, and Claire; younger son Franklin, his partner Gillian Lovink, and their children Owen Kolbach Menendez, Sam (Samuel) Kolbach Menendez, Madeline Lovink McKinnell, and Sarah Lovink McKinnell. Bron, Jason Paul

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden tragic passing of our much-loved Jason in Kingston, Ontario on Sunday, April 21st, 2019. Jason was born January 11th, 1974 and in his 45th year. Loving son of John Bron and Janice Bron, and stepson of Leo Hermer. Proud father of Carlie and Justin Bron. Special loved brother of Janna Bron. Jason will be sadly missed by his nephews Kobie Murphy and Lucas Maskell. Predeceased by his grandparents Jean and Carl Paul and Willem and Grietje Bron. He will be missed by cousins, friends, aunt and uncles. Jason’s loves and passions in his life were his children, friends and family times together, engines, especially transmissions, his pugs, especially Oscar and being on his boat ‘Footloose’. Friends were received at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Sunday, April 28th, 2019 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Funeral service was held in the Chapel on Monday, April 29th, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. “All we have now are pictures in a frame. His memory is a keepsake for which will always remain”. In remembrance of Jason, a trust fund for his children Carlie and Justin has been set up. “We will always have him in our hearts”.

Crawford In fond and loving memory of the best husband and father in the world Orval Crawford who passed away on May 3, 2003. He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast. He just kept right on working For those he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And if he had some worries They were unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold onto In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad. One of our greatest blessings My husband and our dad. Loving wife Dolly and Four sons and their families

HAYES, Phil

(Retired Manager, The Beer Store) In the late evening of Thursday, April 18, 2019 in the ICU at the Queensway Carleton Hospital after a brief but sudden illness, Phil left this world with his devoted wife Gayle curled up beside him; his adoring daughter Paula’s cheek pressed up against his; his caring sonin-law Stephen Cherry and his loving grandson Chad, the light of his life, sitting at his bedside. The hockey match was playing in the background. The son of the late Frank Hayes & Eveline Daze and son-in-law of the late Jean Brandimore of Arnprior, Phil leaves behind his brother Brian (Gail), his loving sister Helen (late Lyle Ross) and Sandra Elliott along with his sisters and brothers-in-law Beryl and Bruce Campbell, Shirley and her husband (and Phil’s best friend) Johnnie Kelly, Heather Campbell (late Phil Brandimore). He will be missed by his many adoring nieces and nephews. Phil gave us everything that his body could give us in its final hours. He is finally free of the pain of the cluster headaches he endured for over 20 years and is breathing effortlessly. We know that his best pal “Honey” is curled up at his feet as he chats with those that have went before him. Thank you to Dr. Iyengar and the ICU Critical Care Team for their incredible medical expertise and compassion. Phil’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation was held on Sunday afternoon, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. and again on Monday, April 29 from 11 to 11:40 a.m. A Tribute to Phil took place in the Pilon Family Chapel at 12 o’clock. Luncheon followed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make donations in Phil’s memory to the charities that were near and dear to his heart: the MS Society of Canada or The Canadian Guild Dogs for the Blind. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY, HIGH SCHOOL TEAM UP FOR PLANT SALE The Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society is making several changes to its annual plant sale, May 25. First, the society is doing the sale jointly with Rideau District High School's Greenhouse Club. Society volunteers have been working with some Grade 7 and 8 students to populate the school's greenhouse with every kind of seedling under the sun (literally), thanks to donated seeds from West Coast Seeds. Proceeds from the sale of these seedlings will go toward refurbishing the greenhouse and expanding horticultural programs at the School. Second, acting on a suggestion from a member, the society encourages anyone in the community who has plants or other horticulture-related products to sell, to have a table at the sale. The idea is that sale patrons will be able to talk directly to the person whose plants or products they're purchasing, and take their time foraging among the various tables for those special finds. The society will also still accept donations of plants and gently used garden items to be sold anonymously by society

volunteers. But it hopes local gardeners and others will buddy up to offer a selection of plants and merchandise to sale patrons. As a prospective vendor, you'll need a bit of a cash float for making change and pay $15 to become a society member (for insurance purposes). The society also asks that, since this sale is its main fundraiser, that you consider, if possible, contributing some of your proceeds to the society at the close of the sale. Seedling plants are, of course, the most popular items. However, you can offer and find perennials, house plants, bushes and even small trees. Dan Savage will be on hand once again with his brilliant selection of day lilies, irises and hostas. The society also encourages people to bring or donate bulbs and seeds. Artisans with ceramic or metal pots, and garden accessories made of metal and glass are also very welcome. There will also be a silent auction of new and gently used garden items or supplies donated by local commercial outfits. You can preregister to reserve a table by con-

tacting Marsha Ferguson at 613-273-8557 or marferg@aol.com, or just show up at the school between 8 and 8:30 a.m. the morning of the sale. If you still want to do an anonymous donation and need help getting your items to the sale, contact Virginia Bourget at 613-489-1122 or vbourget@hotmail.com. Virginia will arrange to provide pots, help you dig and pot up plants, or pick things up and get them to the sale. If you're able to drop off your donations yourself, the society will have volunteers at the school on Friday, May 24 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to receive your items. If you have silent auction items you wish to donate, please contact Yvonne Helwig at 613-2722877 or yhelwig@kingston.net. The new and improved Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society Plant and Garden Sale will take place at the Rideau District High School, 251 Main St., Elgin on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. till noon. The society is 50 years old this year and they're kicking off their celebrations with a whole new bag.

SMITH'S SHOES HAS BEEN STAPLE IN COMMUNITY FOR 75 YEARS Continued from front

are all kinds of people out there that are running around in the wrong sized footwear," he said. "We try to make sure that everything that leaves here fits properly." It's a mission that has remained constant through time. The store originally opened in 1944, when Bill Smith bought Barr's Shoe Store, then located on the east side of Beckwith Street. Shortly after, he purchased

the Lennox Lunch building, which is the current location of Smith's Shoes. Though the store has transferred ownership through the years, Smith's Shoes still pays homage to the bygone era of the full-service shoe store. The walls in the backroom are stacked wall-towall with shoe boxes. Among them are four filing cabinets, all with customers' files. Wells said when he started working at Smith's Shoes 22 years ago, only a single shoebox contained customer records. Logging

customers' preferences over time helps the store provide detailed service for clients. "Some files are pretty full of cards," admits Wells, a testament to their dedicated clientele. Being a full-service shoe store, Smith's gets referrals from medical professionals in the area whose patients need orthotics and various arch supports in their footwear, or who have minor foot ailments. "This store is a destination store the Valley," he said. Customers flock to Smith's from all over including Deep River, Kingston, Brockville, Perth, Carleton Place, Merrickville and Kemptville.

For Wells, independent shoe stores are still viable. But their future depends on carrying better quality products than box store and online competitors, offering high-quality service and embracing new marketing techniques. "The thing that separates us from anybody that's doing this is the service," said Wells. "Being a small independent retailer, we make sure we look after our customers." That wouldn't be possible without the store's stellar employees. "Without good staff, you don't stand a chance," said Wells. Wells said trends he's see-

ing in online retailers like Amazon, a company now in the process of building bricks and mortar stores, also brings hope for those still running physical stores with unique products and service. Survival means adapting to the changing economic landscape and shifting with the times, while not comprising the core principles of high-quality products and service. In honour of the store's 75th anniversary, each month there will be a draw for one pair of men's and one pair of women's shoes - some months there may even be a handbag or a wallet thrown in. The ballots from the

"If you're walking around downtown, drop in and fill out a ballot," said Wells. "It's all free." See more to this story on our website: www.insideottawavalley.com

sudoku

Barsaeinrs

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
