The Paperartzi’11 artists have pushed the theme of drawing and mark-making in new directions – in some cases, taking it literally off the page. While paper is the surface for some exquisite drawings, in other Paperartzi artworks, paper becomes the drawing tool, creating the lines and shapes that form the artwork. Come along and experience sculpture, installations, video, photography, printmaking and live action drawing. Be part of a unique experience in Albany when contemporary dancers take over the outside of the Albany Town Hall in a free performance for Paperartzi’11’s opening event. In a special arrangement for Paperartzi’11, short films of drawings by the famous South African artist William Kentridge will be on show at the Vancouver Arts Centre. The six films are on loan from the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s State Art Collection, bringing international art to Albany during Paperartzi’11. Use this brochure and map to discover the locations of the art. Impressions on the Paper Ghost Through My Faded Mind

Melancholy radiates from the cracks in the pavement. There are whispers of chatter, ghosts of smiles. One creature rises up, another falls from grace. They all are enveloped by the paper. It protects and warms, creates a façade… A powerful contemporary dance performance reflecting on homelessness and exclusion in our community has been developed for Paperartzi’11. Local choreographer Symantha Parr, under the mentorship of Perth choreographer Aimee Smith and in collaboration with sculptor Simon Gilby, have created this memorable performance as part of Ausdance WA’s Future Landings project. 10am-12noon. As part of Impressions….. a series of mini vignettes will feature along York St and at the Albany Farmers Market. Keep an eye out around town as you may see some strange individuals. With his astonishing range of works that explore modern life’s comedies and tragedies, William Kentridge is one of the most compelling interdisciplinary artists of our time. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1955, Kentridge has sought, through his films, drawings, sculptures, graphics and music, theatre and opera projects, to come to terms with the fragmented and fractured nature of his home town and country and with broader global divisions. In November 2010, Kentridge was awarded the 26th annual Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievement in Arts and Philosophy by the Inamori Foundation. Acclaimed for his animated films which are on show for Paperartzi’11, Kentridge constructed these by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds’ screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene.

Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Dr Stefano Carboni said, “The screening of the Kentridge films is a unique opportunity for the Art Gallery of Western Australia to share such important works from the State Art Collection with audiences in regional Western Australia.” Free Talk: 2pm, Saturday March 19. “From cloth to rag”

I view papercut as a form of drawing incorporating an act of removal. ‘Miss Melville and Mrs Clarence’ are two grand ladies who wear the features of Albany in their dresses. This work is about central Albany- a community and a place where life is good and I love to live. Whatever happened to William?

paper, wood Six structures in total, each 50 x 50 x 100-150 cm (approx) This paper plantation’s narrative draws on the global environment crisis – in natural resources global consumption overpopulation economies climate change and the associated highs/lows, peaks/troughs, confusion, chaos and slow rate of willingness to stop the downward spiral. The choice of a ‘plantation’ – one way to help the earth – is pivotal and is close to home through the blue gum industry in this region. Judith lives and farms at Lower King (Albany). After 30 years as an art educator she now enjoys time to paint about immediate and global issues.

roadhouse describes a road trip from our homes in the Geographe Bay area through numerous communities to our destination, Albany. Frottage gathered during the road trip evidences the mark making of human habitation. This textural narrative has been constructed into the series roadhouse. Whatever happened to William? Artist Helen Seiver’s great uncle was William, a convict assigned to work in the Albany Prison Hospital. The three structures which make up this artwork carry textures from buildings which date from 1867-74, the years of William’s duty, and have been created with community involvement (see page 29 for details). Marina and Helen are graduates of ECU Bunbury Campus and have been involved in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Both have work in public and private collections.

Echoes of a Truth

The imprint of the ultrasound carries echoes of an inner truth - its cryptic language only distantly alluding to a more visceral reality. Using sonagraphs as a background grid, this drawing explores fragilities and vulnerabilities that can lurk amongst these seemingly innocuous patterns and shapes. Completed Bachelor Visual Arts (ECU) in 2006. Currently studying for Master of Visual Art at Monash University (off campus). Participated in various group exhibitions since 2001.

An allegory of birth, life and death, a journey in the pursuit of happiness, only to find our mortal coil is a construct of our parents, or maybe the advertising industry: whichever, it is always of anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deciding and never a statement of our own failures. Jenny Crisp has practiced art in Australia and overseas, studying silver-smithing, jewellery, sculpture and painting with works in collections in Australia and overseas.

My current body of work is focused on exploring the idea of absence and presence; disconnection and connection; and feelings of ‘otherness’ – particularly in reference to place or ‘country’. Victoria currently live in Albany, having moved here from Broome in 2007. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (Art) in 2010 through the Albany campus of Curtin University.

These are the storylines that live in my head, through a lifetime condensed into phrases, boxed and wrapped and passed into memory…….decades become transitory moments., where black is the colour and the number is reduced to none. These events are unconnected. Words make line, coincidence creates meaning. A graduate of Claremont School of Art and Edith Cowan University, a diversity of interests including singing, writing, history and anthropology inform Bo’s visual art.

My work reflects the environment that we inhabit; questioning how we exist, our perception of how we exist, in relation to ourselves, each other, and our environment. These works are inspired by the fungi and lichen that grow in the bush and their task in the decay and regeneration of ecological systems. An environment where fungi and lichen exist is a chance for renewal. A mixed media artist, Taniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work often references textile traditions. She has had three solo exhibitions and participated in national and international group exhibitions. City of Melville and Bunbury collections. Represented by Gunyulgup Gallery.

One by one I withdraw the threads, slowly changing the dress into a delicate drawing of itself. A series of reddened lines now circumscribes the space that held my breathing body. Holly Story studied Visual Art at Curtin University, graduating in 1991. She has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas and is represented in major state and national Collections.

This work is based on my father’s story as a POW on the Burma-Thai Railway. Vultures were some of the first birds encountered and due to the enormous death rates they were a common sight. POWs equated them with the Japanese guards who were only too keen to torment and bully their victims to death. Trish Ware has been a teacher / lecturer / artist for the past 20 years. Her art practice includes painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

When visiting Albany in March 1836, Charles Darwin famously commented - “he who thinks with me will never wish to walk again in so uninviting a country.” My recent work is concerned with representations of indigenous vegetation – of coastal heathland, in particular it’s dense and various and wonderful to look at – it’s like a garden. This contrast of views will be the point at which I begin my Sandwalk explorations. Margaret Sanders is an Adelaide-based printmaker. She has worked on community arts, curatorial and teaching projects which have concerned print and paper-based art works. Visit York Street Cafe regularly during Paperartzi’11 to see Margaret’s progressive additions to her artwork.

I’ve wanted to work in an alleyway for a long time. I’m attracted to these usually neglected parts of a city, especially a very big city where a parallel universe seems quietly to exist in the lanes. I want to be part of their transformation into worthy space. Originally from Toronto, Beth has lived in Australia for many years. She completed post-graduate art study at Curtin University and maintains an ongoing art practice while teaching part time.

These drawings are based on my experience of listening to Gregorian Chant. My intention was to make a body of work which reflected not necessarily the music directly but rather the feelings it invokes. For me this is a sense of order and simplicity as well as a rich spatial depth. Jillian lives in Kentdale, has a degree in visual art and exhibits with Turner Galleries, Perth. Her work is held in 11 major public Western Australian collections.

Part A: How much paper do we do we use in a day, a week, a year or in a life time? Can we recycle it all? Probably not, but should we. Why is it more expensive to buy recycled paper? Part B: A book closes when life expires; we become part of the new forest that emerges from the expired paper that creates this new forest.
