WHY CHOOSE THE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME?
WHY CHOOSE THE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME? QUALITY
MATERIALS AND ASSESSMENTS
You can have confidence in the quality of the Management Programme degrees. Our courses follow the strict UK quality assurance standards required for all institutions granted University status (by Royal Charter). The degree you achieve from Heriot-Watt University is of the same quality as students attending equivalent on-campus courses and our learning partner institutions also have to meet strict quality standards before they are approved to deliver our degrees.
The study materials which you will use have been written by academic staff from the School of Management and Languages (Heriot-Watt University) and contain everything you need to prepare for and pass your exams. The exam questions are also set and marked by the University so the quality of your degree is guaranteed.
FLEXIBLE The Management Programme offers flexibility and choice. You can study for your degree where and when you want to, and sit your exams when you feel ready for them. Most importantly, you can fit your studies around work or family responsibilities.
DESIGNED FOR YOU Our degrees use a modular approach where common modules appear in different degree pathways. This means that after your first year there is flexibility in the subjects you choose so that you can achieve the degree which is right for you and your career.
SUPPORT There is always someone to speak to if you need help. Whether it is your fellow students, your local learning partner, the web support site or directly to the External Programmes team at Heriot-Watt University.
RECOGNITION OF PREVIOUS STUDIES Management Programme students come from diverse backgrounds and we understand that many of you may already have a business qualification. We review all applications on a case by case basis and if you do have a relevant qualification we may be able to offer you exemptions from certain subject areas – this means that you could achieve your degree even faster!
VALUE FOR MONEY The Management Programme provides a quality UK degree without the expense of studying and living in the UK. There is no large initial cost and you can pay for the modules as and when you are ready to take them.
BOOST YOUR CAREER Whether you are just starting out, moving up the career ladder or planning a change, our relevant and practical degree courses will give you the skills you need to stand out from the crowd and get recognition in the workplace.
GRADUATION AND ALUMNI NETWORKS Graduation is an exciting and important occasion, and you are welcome to attend the ceremonies which take place twice a year on-campus or one of the international graduation events held each year. As you move into the next phase of your career we invite you to stay in touch with us and to join the ‘Watt Club’. The Watt Club is a social and professional network keeping you in touch with the University and over 70,000 alumni worldwide.
PROFESSIONAL RELEVANCE Our degree courses are all recognised by the relevant professional bodies such as ACCA, CIMA and AIA. Graduates from our BA Management, BA Business and Finance and Bachelor of Business Administration degrees are also qualified to become Associates of the Chartered Management Institute.

DEGREE STRUCTURES
DEGREE STRUCTURES THERE ARE FIVE UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES available through the Management Programme. This gives you the option to choose the right qualification for your academic and career objectives. The following pages explain the subject areas that are included in each degree pathway, which will make it easy to choose the right path for you. All of the degrees include a number of mandatory modules which must be studied, and some degrees give you the opportunity to choose from a range of elective modules. Most subject areas contain two synoptically-linked modules which together are worth 30 credits. Students study both of these linked modules and sit one final exam (which covers both modules). For example, the Stage 1 ‘Accounting’ subject area includes two
8 HWMP
SUMMER 2009
modules called ‘Introduction to Accounting 1’ and ‘Introduction to Accounting 2’. A few of the subject areas contain only one module worth 15 credits. These stand-alone modules are indicated by the * symbol. Examples of these modules are ‘Consumer Behaviour’, ‘Employment Law’ and ‘Taxation’. Students sit one final exam at the end of each stand-alone module. To graduate with a degree students need to achieve 360 credits. For full details of the modules, degree progression routes and award requirements please see our website at www.sml.hw.ac.uk/external . It should be noted that the availability of electives will vary between learning partners.

I chose to study the Management Programme because… The Management Programme was recommended to me by a friend and I chose it because it is a well recognised University and the exam-based assessments suited me. Why did you choose the BA in Accountancy and Finance degree? I recently moved from a different profession to Accountancy so the BA in Accountancy and Finance degree has provided me with the background knowledge and qualification that I required. What did you enjoy most about studying on the Management Programme? I liked the modular structure and the fact that it is not necessary to study other materials. I also prefer the 100% exam structure as I studied whilst working, and did not have much time for assignments. How has the Management Programme helped your career? It has given me the qualification I need for my current job, as well as the option to further my studies into a professional course now that I have gained my degree. The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking about the Management Programme is… It is really helpful to mind-map / make notes of the module materials especially for the important chapters earlier in the semester. This way, its easier to understand the flow and important concepts of the subjects. Studying the entire module when nearing the exam is never a good idea!
I chose to study the Management Programme because... I liked the curriculum, the flexibility, the reputation of Heriot-Watt University, as well as the affordable fees. Why did you choose the BA in Business and Finance degree? I am very business oriented and believe this degree will help boost my entrepreneurial skills and pave the way for self employment. What did you enjoy most about studying on the Management Programme? All of it! I had a wonderful time and I would do it all over again if I had to. The programme is challenging but rewarding if one is hungry for success and really goes for it. I made lots of friends and will keep in touch with them all for years to come. How has the Management Programme helped your career? I worked as a banker before and struggled a lot to understand the benefit/results of a number of business decisions that were made. I felt very inadequate and was constantly low in confidence and morale. Completing the BA in Business and Finance degree has not only addressed my earlier inadequacies but has also put me in a more competitive position for the job market. The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking about the Management Programme is… Do it. Remain focused and work hard towards your goal. Attend lectures regularly and participate in class discussions, ask questions, respond to questions and don’t be afraid to get it wrong. Do not wait until the last minute to read, because although you may pass the examination, you’ll be low on the knowledge necessary for practical application.

FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN
FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN what comes to mind? For many people it might be tropical beaches, Bob Marley, Calypso and Carnival. But the Caribbean, comprising more than 7,000 islands and 73.5 million people has a diverse and vibrant heritage with much more to offer than the ‘beach holiday’ stereotype might suggest.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO Population: 1.3 million Capital: Port of Spain The School of Higher Education has been a learning partner of Heriot-Watt University since 2002. 162 students have graduated with degrees and, with their students consistently achieving excellent exam performances, they are a recognised name in business education. Jamili Richards The School of Higher Education offers a high quality learning experience by delivering a smooth progression route for students through their diploma courses and directly onto the Management Programme. A key benefit for students is that their diploma courses may make them eligible for exemptions, this enables them to achieve their UK degree in a shorter period than is possible elsewhere. Jamili Richards studied in San Juan and graduated in June 2009 with a BA in Management with Distinction. This is a significant achievement as Distinctions are only awarded to those few students who perform with academic excellence throughout their studies. Jamili chose the course because it was directly releated to her career in administration: “When I compared it to other programmes it covered relevant topics and gave an insight into different areas of the company as I aim to work at management level I knew that this broad scope would assist me.” Ivan Thomas BA Accountancy and Finance, San Fernando, 2008 graduate “I recommend the Management Programme because the information is relevant to today’s business world.
