The author composed her memoirs not long after this time, so her remembrances were still vivid. She writes in the first person, in a colourful, lively manner, with many dialogues. As she spent many years in the underground, in different regions and various conditions, the memoirs provide us with the broad picture of underground struggle. The fact that she was the wife of a prominent underground activist and thus was well-informed adds depth to the subjects depicted.

Kateryna Mandryk-Kuibida Freedom Calls us to Battle She was seventeen when she became a participant of the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in the Ukrainian liberation movement, known as the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). She was only twenty three when she was arrested by Soviet security police. Her role was to deliver messages, nevertheless she was convicted as “especially dangerous offender” in the strict regime camps for many years. This book is her confession about all torture and bullying she suffered during the investigation and imprisonment. The book also contains her civic lyrics written in those intolerable conditions.
