Excursions

Ajaccio - The Gorge of Prunelli Duration: ca. 4 hours. Stress level: 2

Disembarking from the ship, your local guide will welcome you and you board the bus for a fascinating excursion showing you a bit of Corsica, a land of rugged beauty. We drive up to the Prunelli Gorges while admiring immensely varied landscape which changes dramatically from gardens and orchards to chestnut and pine trees; and from golden beaches lapped by blue waters to mountains of more than 2,000 meters. The road twists and turns to where we enter the gorges of the Prunelli River. Deep red granite cliffs plunge down into the second most important river in Ajaccio’s environs. At the end of the lake discover the artificial lake and dam of Tolla. Built to give Ajaccio hydroelectricity, it also provides most of the Corsican population with drinking water. Descend down the Mercujo Pass towards Ajaccio, passing through the small villages of Ocana and Bastelicaccia before returning to the ship for lunch. Please Note: There is approximately 800 metres optional walking (stress level 4) over uneven ground at Tolla Lake and Prunelli Gorges. Due to the steep, winding roads the excursion is not recommended to passengers suffering from vertigo.

Level 1 is the most easy and level 5 is the most strenuous

Catania

Chania - Rethymnon

Chania - Chrissi Akti Beach

Today we encourage you to come and see Catania, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city known for its streets built with black lava stone from Mount Etna. We shall see Via Etnea, Via Crociferi, the Piazza Duomo and the “Liotru” statue, symbol of the city, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Opera House (external visit), the University and the noble Palace of Biscari (external visit). The guide will show you two of the “Seven Doors” protecting S. Agatha’s treasure, the famous “candelora”. You can also find an abundance of quaint shops, boutiques, great restaurants, very tempting cafeterias, with unique Sicilian ricotta or almond and pistachio cookies or traditional ice-creams (the first one in history was produced in this province). There will be ample free time for shopping before the bus takes you back to the ship for lunch at around 12:30 hours.

Today we offer you an excursion to the exceptionally beautiful town of Rethymno which lies in the centre of Crete and surely is one of the highlights of any visit to Greece. It is built between the modern day capital of the island, Heraklion, and the ancient capital of Chania. Rethymnon is the third largest city of the island and is a fascinating combination of old and new: In the old quarter, evidence of Rethymnon’s Venetian and Ottoman past is all around one. On our guided city walk you will be meandering through the narrow maze of streets that seem a world apart from the hustle and bustle of modern-day life. On the other hand, the new town provides residents and visitors alike with all the amenities and facilities one could wish for in the 21st century. Rethymno and its villages offer picture postcard views, which are pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sounds of the Cretan lyre. The great number of visitors who return repeatedly confirm the words of the poet: ”Rethymno is not a place where you go to, but a place where you return. We return to the Mein Schiff for lunch on-board.

In the afternoon we offer you a transfer to the Golden Beach (greek: Hrissi Akti), one of the most beautiful in all of Crete, which is located 5 km west of Souda and a few meters east of Agii Apostoli. It actually consists of two sandy beaches separated by a small hill. The west cove is the main Golden Beach and the east one is called Aptera beach. The west bay, which is the most popular, is very well organized with umbrellas, lifeguards, showers, cafes, water sports etc. It has fine golden sand and shallow waters, making it also ideal for young children. Moreover, there is a playground for kids nearby. The sandy beach of Aptera, located on the other side of the hill, is more peaceful and less organized. There are the ruins of the hotel Aptera Beach, which was abandoned in the late 90s due to debts. The beach is very nice and suitable for those who seek for a place with relatively few people. The whole area to Agii Apostoli is full of small parks with pines and eucalyptuses. After approx. 2.5 hours of free time for swimming, the bus will take you back to the port of Souda.

For sure, Alghero will remain in your heart as one of the top places visited.

Duration: ca. 5 hours. Stress level: 3 A scenic 60-minute drive along the east coast of Rhodes, passing historic Mandraki Harbor where the Colossus of Rhodes-one of the seven wonders of the ancient world-once stood takes you to Lindos, Have your camera ready, as we’ll pass plenty of picturesque little villages and medieval structures, as well as a countryside filled with fragrant lemon and orange orchards, verdant olive groves and picturesque vineyards. Upon arriving the guide will walk with you to Old Town (ca 500 metres) after which you will have approximately 1 hour free time in Lindos. You might wish to climb the 270 steps to the acropolis (entrance fee not included) to enjoy a birds-eye view of Lindos or, alternatively, you might wish to do some souvenir shopping or enjoy a coffee at one of the numerous coffeeshops. We return to our bus which takes us to Rhodes town where you can join the guide for a walk through the historical centre. Walking along the paved Street of the Knights, one of the best preserved medieval arteries, you will come across residences which once belonged to the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Before reaching the Palace of the Grand Master (if you wish to enter the Grand Master Palace you can do so on your own after the tour has finished or in the afternoon – entrance is not included), you will see the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Turkish Baths, the Hospital of the Knights (which now houses the Archaeological Museum) and the Church of Our Lady of the Castle.

Duration: ca. 3.5 hours. Stress level: 3 Porto Torres is anchored on the northern shores of Sardinia, and the town’s got a history book to rival Italy’s longest-standing settlements. We’ll see the caramel-coloured Aragonese tower as you pull into port, which takes centre-spot in a piazza named after Christopher Columbus. Leave the harbourside behind, as you board our coach heading to the medieval town of Castelsardo. This historical and panoramic tour showcases the majestic geologic formations of this island, the second largest in the Mediterranean after Sicily. Before arriving in town, a stop at Elephant Rock is an absolute must. This trachyte rock settled next to a state road is a wondrous oddity, a mass that rolled into the valley and eroded into the shape of a pachyderm over time. Once in Castelsardo, for those who wish, there is a steep walk up to Doria Castle (small entrance fee extra), a Genoese castle built in 1161 at the edge of the dramatic Asinara Gulf, which offers incredible views from its terrace. From here, wego around the town’s famous lanes and alleys. The combination of its grim past are mixed with the modern advancements of any other town in the region. The unique charm can be found in small churches like the Santa Maria delle Grazie and the simple architectural challenges of building on a cliff exposed to the sea. Some free time, before we return to the ship for lunch.

Duration: ca. 3.5 hours. Stress level: 2 Black-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and whitewashed villages that cling to volcanic cliffs make the island a wonder to behold. After arrival in Santorini you will disembark by tender boats to the port, where our coaches will be waiting to take us on a scenic drive to the island’s highest peak, Mt. Profitis Elias. Here, in this remote spot, we’ll have an ideal photo opportunity to capture the beauty of this ancient island. We then head to most northern town, Oia. Experience the charm of this town with whitewashed picture perfect labyrinth of narrow, twisting cobblestone alleyways, fine shops, cafes and domed churches. Enjoy the traditional Cycladic architecture with its beautiful old mansions and houses perched on the cliff side. We then drive on to the Fira town, the picturesque capital of the island, built on the rim of the caldera wall. Here you have free time and can then return on your own by tender boat to the Mein Schiff. From Fira there are 2 ways to get to the harbour, either with the cable car (not incl. - there might be long queues) or on foot walking along the serpentine way to the port from where the tender boats depart.
