German Christmas Markets

Visiting: Frankfurt, Sachsenhausen, Heidelberg, Nuremberg, Wiesbaden & Mainz

Germany is the birthplace of Christmas Markets, where you can escape commercialism for a traditional & authentic experience

04 – 09 December

Saturday 05th December - After breakfast join the tour leader for a walking city tour of Frankfurt. Frankfurt is the business and financial center of Germany and the largest city in the German state of Hesse. We shall start our city tour by visiting the Römerberg, the old center of Frankfurt, with a number of historic buildings dating to the 14th and 15th century, the Dom dedicated to Saint Bartholomeus, the main Cathedral built in Gothic style and the Eiserner Steg (Iron bridge), Frankfurt’s most well-known pedestrian bridge. It is just a minute away from the Römer, and provides great views of the skyline and the Main river. On the other side, you will reach Sachsenhausen, a district known for its museums and historic pubs. Alte Oper (Old Opera) Renaissance Opera Building in the center of the city, is a busy square with fountains and cafés. Then free time for other personal sightseeing or for shopping. We suggest the Zeil which is the main shopping street in Frankfurt and in fact one of the most frequented shopping streets in Europe. In the enening we suggest to visit by public transport Sachsenhausen for its traditional food. Return to our hotel and overnight. Sunday 06th December - Breakfast at hotel and today join us on our optional full day excursion which will take us to the beautiful Heidelberg which is situated on the River Neckar in south-west Germany. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic and picturesque cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town. We start visiting it’s Christmas Market. The scents of roasted almonds, cinnamon and hot chestnuts waft through the winding alley ways of the Old Town. Against the romantic backdrop of the castle, couples glide hand-in-hand on skates, and the gaily decorated Christmas stalls murmur with the international confusion of voices. the stalls nestle idyllically amongst the historic squares of the Old Town, offering a warming glow of light along one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe. Free

time for personal sightseeings and return to Hotel and overnight. Monday 07th December - After breakfast prepare yourself for an optional full day excursion Nuremberg. It’s a city on the Pegnitz river and the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal in the German state of Bavaria. Nuremberg is often referred to as being the ‘unofficial capital’ of the Holy Roman Empire. Some free time to explore the city center. Then we go to its Christmas Market - 180 wooden stalls, festooned with red-and-white cloth, which have given the Christmas Market its name of “Little Town from Wood and Cloth”. Each year 200 stall holders present their traditional wares: Nuremberg spicy gingerbread, fruit loaves, bakery goods, sweets and typical Christmas articles such as Christmas tree angels, cribs, Christmas tree ornaments, candles, toys as well as many arts and craft products.Favourite souvenirs include the “Nuremberg Plum People”, little figures made from prunes. For refreshments we highly recommend Nuremberg roast sausages and mugs of mulled wine. Return to our hotel and overnight. Tuesday 08th December - Breakfast is followed by another incredible day organized by the group leader by train (extra) to Wiesbaden’s Christmas market with its almost 130 stalls on the Schlossplatz. It is not only the mulled wine and culinary specialties that contribute to the festive atmosphere – the atmospheric programme of entertainment on the stage in front of the Rathaus is also very popular with the young and old. The varied programme offers Christmas music, theatre, dance performances and much more. Return to our hotel in time of dinner (optional) and overnight. Wednesday 09th December - After breakfast check out and free time. Or you can join the leader and visit Mainz by train (extra). The city is located on the river Rhine at its confluence with the Main opposite Wiesbaden, in the western part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main. It’s worth visiting Mainz Cathedral of St. Martin (Mainzer Dom), over 1,000 years old. St. John’s Church, 7thcentury church building, Staatstheater Mainz, the Iron Tower, the Wood Tower (Holzturm, tower at the former wood market), a 15th-century gate tower. The Mainz Old Town – what’s left of it, the quarter south of the cathedral survived World War II and the Marktbrunnen, one of the largest Renaissance fountains in Germany. We return to hotel, pick up luggage and then transfer to Frankfurt airport in time for check in on our AirMalta flight departing at 8.15 p.m. arriving in Malta at 10.50 p.m.

We return to our hotel in time to prepare for the New Year’s Eve celebration on board the boat M.V Europa on the Danube River. We shall enjoy dinner (incl. beer, wine & soft drinks) and a live show with music whilst ushering in 2016! Friday 01st January: After a relaxed breakfast we offer you another interesting optional excursion as we explore the Danube Bend. This great river is Europe’s second longest river, with a total of 2857kms, stretching from the Black Forest to the Black Sea! Over the years

the river carved a path between the Visegrad and Borzsony Mountains, considered to be one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube River. We shall start with a visit to the town of Visegrad, which used to be a Roman stronghold and which, in the 14th century became the seat of the Angevins kings. We then head on to the picturesque baroque town of Szentendre, with its skyline dominated by seven churches. Most of the pretty and winding streets lead up to one of the hilltop churches. Later on we shall take a ferry boat (incl.) and cross to the east bank of the Danube so as to explore another charming town, Vac. Enjoy some free time in this attractive small baroque town and admire the main sites, including the Cathedral of St Mary and the Triumphal Arch. (Optional) dinner at hotel and overnight. Saturday 02nd January: After an early breakfast, we offer an optional day excursion visiting Vienna, the City of Music. On our arrival in Austria’s capital city we shall make a short stop at the Schonbrunn Palace to see its marvellous grounds and the famous Nettuno fountain lying under the dominating ‘Gloriette’. Our next stop would be at the famous Hunderwasserhaus with its unique but impressive design. We then continue our panoramic city tour passing by numerous important buildings. The rest of the afternoon is free and you may admire some important sites such as the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and the imposing St. Stephen Cathedral or you may wish to spend some free time on the renowned shopping street of Mariahilferstrasse. We shall then return to our hotel in Budapest in the evening. Dinner (optional) and overnight. Sunday 03rd January: After breakfast and room check out we offer you an optional excursion visiting the wonderful region of Eger in Northern Hungary. Famous for the world-renowned wine produced there and also for the attractive Baroque buildings it boasts, such as the Basilica and the Archbishop’s Palace. We shall then transfer to Budapest airport for check-in for our direct Air Malta flight departing at 7.55 p.m. to arrive in Malta at 10.05 p.m. in Malta.
