ALUMNI PROFILES DUFFER BROTHERS Matt and Ross Duffer ’07 created Netflix’s Stranger Things in a writers’ room at Chapman. Less than five years after graduating, they have achieved blockbuster success. Just weeks after its July streaming debut, Stranger Things became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. “Wild” is just one word the 32-year-old brothers use to describe the summer of 2016. When reflecting on what made Dodge College an incubus for their filmmaking careers, the brothers say the ability to try many different techniques, and be a part of a group of really, really smart kids who love the same things they did was instrumental in preparing them for a life of filmmaking. LORETTA SANCHEZ Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez ’82 began her congressional career in January of 1997 and is currently serving her tenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 46th District. She holds senior positions on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee. She is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and serves as the co-chair of the Immigration Task Force. She credits the one-on-one, personalized education she received from her professors as a reason for her professional success. The building blocks she learned at Chapman have helped her to better communicate and work in her field. It has given her the confidence to go out, tackle any kind of problem she encountered, and get things done.
JONATHAN JOHNSON Five years ago Jonathan Johnson '10 took on his first inner-city teaching job in New Orleans. He earned the label of "warrior teacher," a reflection of his eagerness to fight for his students' future. Now Johnson has a bold new battle plan. Working with local and national leaders in business and education, he’s developed his own public charter school, which already is broadly recognized for its groundbreaking, market-based approach. As founder and CEO of Rooted School, Johnson is equipping students to succeed in high-demand technology jobs in New Orleans. Some of those students will start earning even before they graduate, giving them a leg up on professional success. “Jonathan is one of the best teachers in the country, and he’s just the kind of leader we need in education,” says Matt Candler, CEO of 4.0 Schools, a nonprofit incubator of new school designs. “He combines a bold vision with a disciplined approach.” NICOLE PROVANSAL At the age of 6, Nicole Provansal ’07, MBA ’09 dreamed of working in baseball. Since 2010, she has been living that dream, working in corporate sponsorships and advertising with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Nicole’s determination and preparation coupled with the opportunities Chapman provided created the perfect environment for success. Nicole continues to be an active member of the Chapman Family in many ways, including coordination of the annual Chapman Night at Angel Stadium.

DOMINIQUE STEWART Appearing on Glee, Meet the Goldbergs, Pitch Perfect 2, and in advertisements for CoverGirl while working on an album, performing with a cappella group SoundCheck, and competing on American Idol were just some of the highlights of Dominique Stewart’s ’16 life during her college career. When asked how she balanced music and acting with her academics, Stewart commented, “Communication Studies really helped developed my public speaking skills and stage presence. It also helped me to learn how to market myself as an artist and business professional. Being an artist is like being your own little company.” Currently, Stewart is pursuing her recording career while applying her communication skills as a marketing communications supervisor at Credit One Bank. JUSTIN SIMIEN In 2014, Justin Simien ’05 experienced a lifechanging moment when he won the Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Talent at the Sundance Film Festival. Soon after Sundance, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions acquired the rights to Dear White People, the film Simien wrote and directed. The film generated excitement when the hilarious trailer went viral and proved there was an audience for the film. Variety named Texas-born Simien one of its 10 Directors to Watch and praised Dear White People as a thoughtprovoking satire on race relations. Justin is now writing and directing a 10-episode Netflix spin-off series with the same title which will premiere on the internet TV network in 2017.
MICHAEL KOLL In a business that’s all about the numbers, Chapman University accounting alumnus Michael Koll ’11 landed a big one — a nearperfect score on the Uniform CPA Examination. Out of 90,000 candidates who sat for the CPA exam in 2011, only 37 met the criteria for the award. The achievement won him the highly selective 2011 Elijah Watt Sells Award. “Given the scope and caliber of the competition, this is truly a rare and remarkable achievement. Michael epitomizes the qualities of so many of our students,” says Glenn Pfeiffer, vice chancellor for academic administration at Chapman. Koll was the only recipient from a university in California. He is currently an associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Irvine. REBECCA HALL Rebecca Hall ’96 is the kind of public relations professional who moves heaven and earth to serve her clients. So who better to promote the story of how engineering and construction firms helped transport an 85-ton space shuttle through the streets of Los Angeles? As the shuttle Endeavour made its October 2012 trip from LAX to its final home at the California Science Center, Hall and her colleagues matched its journey step for step. Hall recalls this event, stating “It was just a beautiful moment of shared pride in this national treasure.” Hall is a past president of the Chapman Alumni Association Board whose firm, Idea Hall, is among the largest and most respected in Orange County.
