Sunday night football 2011 SEASON PREVIEW

NBC plans to once again "flex" its' muscles come Sunday Night! NBC's Football Night in America and Sunday Night Football will debut on Thursday, September 8, when the defending Super Bowl champs, Green Bay, By Beau Bagley hosts the New Orleans Saints. What began on August 6, 2006 with the NFL Preseason Hall of Fame game has turned into an instant success. Veteran Al Michaels serves as the play-byplay announcer, with Cris Collinsworth as the color commentator and Michele Tafoya as the sideline reporter. The pregame show, Football Night in America, has some of the best sports talent on TV, with host Bob Costas, Dan Patrick, Tony Dungy, Mike Florio, Rodney Harrison, Peter King, and Andrea Kremer. Flex scheduling is something unique to the NFL when NBC started Sunday Night Football. Sunday night games between November 13 and December 18 (inclusive) are "flex games", and could revert to Sunday afternoon if a more competitive matchup arose. The final Sunday night of the season-January 1, 2012--is likewise a "flex game"; the slot, blank when the schedule was released, will be filled by a game whose

winner will take the final playoff spot in its conference. After the season debut on Thursday, September 8, Week 1 has the Cowboys coming to prime time. On September 11, The New York Jets will host the Dallas Cowboys. The last time these two teams met, the Cowboys cruised to a 34-4 victory on Nov. 22, 2007. Dallas leads the all-time series, 7-2. Week 2 has the Philadelphia Eagles at the Atlanta Falcons, which will mark Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick's return to his former team, Atlanta. Week 3 has the first meeting between Indianapolis and Pittsburgh since 2008, while Week 4 has Baltimore at the New York Jets, a rematch of the Ravens 10-9 victory in 2010. In Week 5, a playoff rematch between Green Bay and Atlanta, while Week 6 has the Minnesota Vikings at the Chicago Bears. The 2011 schedule once again places a Sunday night game (Indianapolis Colts at New Orleans Saints on October 23 in Week 7) opposite a World Series game. Week 8 is something all of Texas will be watching, as NFC East rivals Philadelphia and Dallas meet in Philly. Cowboys hold a 56-44 edge in the all-time series. Week 9 has the Ravens at the Steelers, Week 10 features New England at the New York Jets, then Flexible scheduling will be used in Weeks 11-17.

Nfl ON CBS 2011 SEASON PREVIEW

KDBC 2011 BROADCASTS 9/11 - Indianapolis at Houston 11a 9/18 - Baltimore at Tennessee 11a in 2009 when Arizona hosts Pittsburgh. The following week, the Steelers get another big test hosting New England. Week 9 has an AFC West matchup between the Raiders and the Broncos. On Thursday, November 24, CBS will feature the Dallas Cowboys annual Thanksgiving Day game when the Cowboys host the San Diego Chargers. Those are just a few of the outstanding talent that will be featured on CBS. With an average US audience of 106.5 million viewers, Super Bowl XLIV between New Orleans and Indianapolis on CBS was the most-watched Super Bowl ever as well as the most-watched program of any kind in American television history, beating the 27-year-long record previously held by the final episode of M*A*S*H, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", watched by 105.97 million viewers. The game drew an overnight national Nielsen rating of 46.4 with a 68 share, the highest for a Super Bowl since Super Bowl XX in 1986. CBS' coverage began in the 1956 NFL season, before the 1970 AFL-NFL Merger. Prior to 1968, CBS had an assigned crew for each NFL team. Thus, CBS became the first network to broadcast some NFL regular season games to selected television markets across the nation. From 1970 until the end of the 1993 season, when Fox won CBS' contract, CBS aired the NFL's National Football Conference games. Since 1975, game coverage has been preceded by pre-game show The NFL Today. Expect high quality football once again in 2011.

By Beau Bagley

CBS is once again your home for the best AFC football. Since 1956, CBS is your proud home to NFL football, and some outstanding matchups are slated for 2011. New to the CBS family this season will be Marv Albert, who will add his unique and comprehensive voice to NFL Football as a play-by-play announcer. This season, high profile matchups take over every week. Week 1, the Baltimore Ravens host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a huge division rivalry. Week 2, the West Coast meets the East coast with two playoff candidates when San Diego travels to New England. Week 4, the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers host the Denver Broncos. Week 5, a colossal AFC East matchup between Rex Ryan and Bill Belichek and their Jets vs. Patriots. Week 7 has a rematch of Super Bowl XLIII

Cowboys Want Payback in 2011

By Beau Bagley

Every Cowboys fan will remember Sunday, January 2nd. Not for the fact that Dallas defeated NFC East division rival Philadelphia, but for the fact that the horrendous 2010 season was finally over. After their final game of 2010, a 14-13 victory over the Eagles, Dallas finally put to sleep one of the worst and over-hyped seasons in team history. Dallas finished 6-10, after starting the year with Super Bowl aspirations. A Cowboys Super Bowl in Cowboys Stadium never materialized.

Fast forward to 2011, renewed enthusiasm is back, along with a new Head Coach. Jason Garrett takes the reins, though he is hardly new to the Cowboys. Garrett, a former Cowboys Quarterback 1993-1999, had been the offensive coordinator of the Cowboys before being promoted to his current position after Dallas owner Jerry Jones fired Wade Phillips on November 8, 2010. Coaching was not the only problem. On October 25, 2010, Giants Linebacker Michael Boley was unblocked, and took out his frustration on Cowboys starting quarter-

back Tony Romo, breaking his collarbone, and ultimately Romo missed the rest of the season. Though Jon Kitna played decent in Romo’s absence, the team and the season were never the same. In 2011, health is a big concern, though most believe the team is loaded and ready for payback. Some might ask, loaded? Before training camp even started, Dallas let go veterans Roy Williams (WR), Leonard Davis (OL), Marion Barber (RB), Marc Colombo (OL), and then lost Receiver Sam Hurd and Defensive Lineman Stephen Bowen to free

The Cowboys new defense should be exciting. Dallas hired former Cleveland Browns Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan, twin brother of New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan, and though the Dallas ‘D’ has had to play catch up, Ryan likes what he sees.

agency. Back this season is a healthy Felix Jones who Garrett claims will be the featured running back. Also back is Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and Tony Romo. By all accounts their preseason training has been great. “There were a couple of scheme things that obviously weren’t great,” Ryan said. “It didn’t look so pretty, but I was excited about an early scrimmage. We had a lot of guys doing some good things. And those young guys really impressed me.” Though Dallas opens the regular season at

the NY Jets, their first four games should be easy with San Francisco, Washington and Detroit. Expect the Cowboys to be 3-1 heading into Week 6 at New England after a bye. Garrett agrees, and he has high hopes for 2011. “We were 6-10 and I'd be lying to you if I said it doesn't sit in everybody's craw as extra motivation.” Said Garrett,“But we're focused... We are putting last year behind us and hopefully we will stack some good days together and give ourselves a chance to be a good football team.” So does owner Jerry Jones “I’m pretty happy where we are, I do think we’re turning it around.” We’ll find out as the season progresses.

Jason Garrett A new head coach means a new era for the Cowboys

ultimate football guide | 11

By: Fred Albers and Cliff Williams

ecause of his unprecedented high-profile as an NFL assistant coach, it can be difficult to grasp that Jason Garrett has only been head coach of the Dallas Cowboys since January of this year. Last November, as the season was winding down to a miserable 1-7 start, he was handed the job from a hastily excused Wade Phillips. This move was wellreceived by Cowboys fans, but put Garrett in the precarious position of turning their nightmare around. He was victorious in five of their final eight games, earning him the job as the eighth head coach in Dallas Cowboys history and the first ever former Cowboys player to reach that position. Jason Garrett 12 |ultimate football guide

In his early NFL playing days, he launched passes from under center for Dallas as Troy Aikman’s backup, then returned years later in 2007 to become the offensive coordinator. His leadership turned the Cowboys into the NFL’s 2nd most potent offense. You could say that he has started his first full season as head coach unconventionally. When the Ultimate Football Guide’s Fred Albers interviewed him in late July, much of the Cowboys roster was still unknown. With the NFL lockout, Garrett did not get to see his team until they reported to camp on July 27th. But as most fans know, Garrett has never been afraid to make changes. On July 26th he cut three former star players: wide receiver Roy Williams, offensive lineman Leonard Davis, and starting running back Marion Barber. All three presented discipline problems during the 2010 season. His message was clear – 2011 begins a new era in Cowboys football. A unique fine dining As you can imagine he was anxious to get experience in 2 started, seeing his players on the field and runEl Paso locations... ning his first practice. "We're excited about the team we have and the direction we're going. The biggest thing is we need to stop talking and get to work." One of the biggest question marks for the team is Tony Romo’s health. Did the time he spent on the sideline last season help him "see" the game and help his leadership? "Any time you're a player and have an opportunity to play, especially the quarterback position, and then you get that taken away. You have to put the brakes on a little bit and step back and emotionally detach from it, and that's what Tony had to do. It's hard for these guys. Once you do it, there’s a lot to learn. When your perspective changes a little bit, maybe you can get reenergized. I think he gained from it..

Experts speculated that Wade Phillips ‘cupcake camp’ style training may have factored into last year’s 1 – 7 start. Yet Garrett is close-lipped about changes he’s making this season. "We as coaches did look at that. We talked about those things and made some adjustments and we're going forward.” He also feels that he’s prepared to deal with the unusual late start of camp. "This year it will be particularly interesting to see where our players are, having not seen them in a while. We'll see where they are and we'll adjust accordingly." As a former player, Garrett likes the fact that many players held unofficial workouts while labor negotiations were taking place. "A lot of good things in football happen when coaches walk off the field, and this has gone on since 1920." So, it will be a physical camp? "We'll do that. Coaches prepare their teams in different ways. If you look at the specifics of the rules that have come out in this agreement (NFL Labor Contract) there's a tremendous amount of flexibility. I don't think anybody feels like they're short-changed." There are major changes in the coaching staff as well, revamping the defensive look with new coordinator Rob Ryan. What can we expect? "This is a new and different football team. Let's start with that. Rob has a different challenge in installing his defensive system. We didn’t have an off-season with our players. They’ll have to learn this defensive system quickly. We feel like we have a smart football team, the right kind of guys, the right elements to get things going." Still, he knows that the team must improve on both sides of the ball to get back into playoff contention. "We have to do everything better." What approach will Garrett take in practice

and preseason games? Fred Albers asked if he feels the players have ‘bought into' his philosophy? "I'm not the guy to answer that question. We will have a plan. As we work through it, we'll be more candid of how we play these preseason games. We're going to do things with a fast tempo, some urgency." Regardless of how the season plays out, one thing is for sure, there’s a new sheriff in Dallas and it looks like he’ll be doing things in his own unique style. The question is, will he remain in this job for 6, 10 years? Or will he suffer the fate of Switzer, Gailey, Campo, Parcells, and Phillips? One game at a time fans. One game at a time.

My nFl Journey

John Skelton Quarterback, el paso native

Stop By Today!

By Aaron Rich On Christmas Day 2010, in just his third NFL start and facing his home state team, the Dallas Cowboys, rookie quarterback and El Paso native John Skelton led the game winning drive, bringing the Arizona Cardinals in field goal range where kicker Jay Feely was able to kick the game winning field goal defeating Big D 27-26. “That was probably the most gratifying win I have ever had,” said Skelton. Quite a statement for the former Burges Mustang who grew up watching the Cowboys before moving on to having a successful career at Forham University. But the backstory leading up to that game is series of unexpected events that most would have never predicted. It all began when he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Cardinals “Early they told me ‘we don't expect you to play and we kind of want to develop you.’ Then

something happened and I ended up playing and you know it was great experience,” said Skelton. That “something” was the release of Matt Leinart. The vacancy made room for the Skelton to be named 3rd-string quarterback. After twelve weeks of injuries and disappointing play from the signal-callers ahead of him, Skelton got his chance in week 13. He entered in the fourth quarter of a game against the Rams, and he completed three of his six

passes for 45 yards. Skelton was named the starter thereafter. “Your world changes a lot. There's a big difference from a third string quarterback and first string. There is a lot more demand placed on you not only on the football field but also off. You know it’s a big step to make, but I enjoyed it,” said Skelton. In his first career NFL start, Skelton led the Cardinals to a 43-13 victory over the Broncos, snapping a seven-game losing streak. He completed 15 of his 37 passes with 146 passing yards. He would finish his rookie season with two wins and two losses, two touchdown passes and two interceptions, a total of 662 passing yards, and a QB rating of 62.3. Skelton was the presumed starter this season before Arizona acquired Kevin Kolb in July from Philadelphia. The move was a sign that the Cardinals still saw the need for a change a quarterback. Skelton, however, took a very veteran stance. “Quarterback play from whoever it was, was not where it needs to be. I'm just going to compete and do what I can and hopefully I do win the job,” says Skelton. We’ll see if the Cardinals call on him again, and bring a division trophy, and maybe some stardom, to El Pasos NFL hometown player.

Sunday February 5, 2012 Lucas Oil Stadium Stadium, Indianapolis Once again, NBC will be your home to the Super Bowl. Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth will call the nation's biggest sporting event, Super Bowl XLVI, the 46th annual edition of the Super Bowl. Indianapolis has been home to the NCAA Final Four, but now it will be home to the Super Bowl. The game will be held on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. This would be the first time that the Super Bowl is held in Indianapolis. This would also be only the fourth time that the Super Bowl

is held in a cold-weather city, after Pontiac, Michigan's hosting of Super Bowl XVI, Minneapolis's hosting of Super Bowl XXVI, and Detroit's hosting of Super Bowl XL. Indianapolis beat out Houston, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona in hosting rights, and now Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning has hopes of adding another Super Bowl title to his resume in his own backyard. The favorites from the AFC will likely be the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, and the San Diego

!

Chargers, though Baltimore and Denver could surprise. In the NFC, the Green Bay Packers would love nothing more than to defend their title, but the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints will have something to say about that. So come February, get your popcorn ready, NBC Newschannel 9 will be your place for Super Bowl XLVI. -By Beau Bagley

If you’re like me you spend countless hours preparing for the draft, researching performance, projections, coaching, matchups, blogs, and podcasts. But now the draft is over and you need to win games. Lots of ‘em. Follow these tips you should find yourself at the top of the fantasy standings. Get Wired Early Championship teams start and end with waiver mastery. It’s a safe bet to hold on to most top draft picks until week 2, in case a week 1 blowout was a fluke. Start picking up free agents right after the second week. Don’t be loyal to a draft bust. One of your WRs has 2 catches and 40 yards after a couple of games? Boom, history. There’s always a ton of great prospects available on the wire after week 2. As the season progresses you should make a lot of waiver moves. A good fantasy team almost always finishes the season with a very different lineup than was drafted. One-Week Stunts Predicting which free agent is going to be the big surprise of the season is near impossible. That’s the Hail Mary approach to fantasy. Instead, you should keep some ‘flex’ spots on your roster and look for the guys with the best matchup for that week. Research those defensive matchups. Is there a backup RB on the wire facing the 31st rushing defense in the league? He’ll probably get a lot more reps than usual. That could be a great one-week stunt. That allows you to drop him the following week for another one. Be flexible - finding the right situation will help you gain and edge every week.

No Injured Reserve It sounds heartless but you can’t hold on to any injured player that is predicted to be out more than 3 weeks. Think about it. NFL stars are pushed to get on the field as soon as possible. If a guy has to sit out 3 weeks with an ankle sprain how good will he play in the following 3 games? They almost always underperform after returning from an injury. Advance Planning By the fourth game of the season you’ll know which other teams are going to be a threat to your playoff run. Meanwhile, you’ll always have those ‘bye-week’ teams that can be pummeled by your backups. You should try to pick up players that have great matchups on the weeks you’re set to play the toughest teams, even if you’re picking them up a month in advance. These are just some techniques I use to make it to the playoffs in virtually every league I play. Good luck this season! The Ultimate Fantasy Guy can be reached at elpasoidol@yahoo.com

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick. As a junior, Fields ran wild last year for the Americas Trail Blazers, gaining 1,658 yards with 18 touchdowns in 10 games. His physical presence and sculpted body are impressive. “I put a lot of work in the weight room and it has translated on the field.” But his workouts aren’t just physical. “I’m dedicated to watching film and learning more about the game of football.” He committed to the Boise State Broncos in June. But in 2011, Fields will be the focal point for the Americas offense as well as the top player in the Borderland.

Hall is arguably the best running back in New Mexico and could make a case for being the best player overall. He rushed for over 1,500 yards in 2010 with 22 touchdowns. In 2011 he has a chance to best the 2,047 yards and 29 touchdowns his brother James (NMSU) totaled as a Bulldawg senior in 2008. Xavier has big aspirations off the field. “I’d like to play Division I ball. Then one day I’d like to be athletic director at a major university”. Until then, his Las Cruces fans will be barking loudly at this all-star as he scorches the field for what looks to be a big season.

The Ranger signal caller ranks as the top area quarterback. A dual-threat QB, Hinojo burns defenses with his legs just as much as he does with his arm. In his junior season, Brian threw for 2,733 yards while rushing for 462 and accounting for 41 total touchdowns. He credits his years of practice and great coaching. “I had a coach in pee-wee football that molded me into the QB I am today.” Hinojo realizes that he has some special physical talents. “My ability to run has helped a lot, so I still do my best to keep that edge. I still throw a lot and catch mistakes in my technique.”

Any time Rashad Chisholm gets the ball, everyone holds their breath. The diminutive tailback was a touchdown machine in 2010 scoring 24 times while chewing up 1,632 yards. Even more impressive considering Chisholm split carries in his junior season. How did he reach this level? “Hard work and the love from my teammates. Pushing myself and them to do our best and perform at the top”. What about being featured in the UFG? “I feel great that people think of me as one of the players to watch and it makes me want to perform my best and show them why I was selected.”

Rashad Chisholm - RB Andress Eagles - Senior

All hail the King! The Eagles feature a run-first offence and King reigns supreme on the ground gaining 1,613 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2010. Canutillo will rely on King to shoulder the majority of the offensive load, something he is more than capable of doing. It doesn’t take long talking to Shane to see that he lets his on-field play do the talking for him. The soft-spoken running back does reveal his future goals in simple terms. “I want to play in college and get a good education.”

Proudly supporting our local stars!

Shane King - RB Canutillo Eagles - Senior

In his first year as the starting quarterback for the Trojans, all Axten Franzoy did was lead his team back from a 3-3 record to win the 5A State Championship throwing for 232 yards and four touchdowns in the title game. Now in his final season at Mayfield, Franzoy is poised to bring home another title. Axten says that his family, coaches, and teammates have all helped him achieve his goals. “My primary goal is to contribute to the goals and aspirations of my teammates for this upcoming season. As long as we stay united and look onward we will be successful.”

When you are the top target for the top quarterback in the area, good things tend to happen. When Andrew Hernandez catches the ball, great things happen. In 2010, Hernandez pulled in 65 passes for 853 yards and 9 touchdowns. Andrew is excited to be featured as a top HS player. “I’m shocked that I got a chance to be in the Ultimate Football Guide. It’s an honor.” And the prospects for this year? “Our team has a lot of potential and talent to get us to where we want to go.” If summer 7-on-7 tournaments are any indication, expect big things from the Ranger wide out.

Andrew Hernandez - WR Riverside Rangers - Senior

Flores is the nightmare that haunts the dreams of opposing offenses. The Husky junior was absolutely everywhere last season piling up an eye popping 123 tackles. He also registered 4 sacks for -16 yards, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal. Max is predicting success this season. “I feel really good about our chances. Our goal isn’t just to win district, but to make it to the 4th round of the playoffs.” Like many players, Max hopes to play in the NFL. “It has been my dream since I was 8 years old.” Until then, this defensive captain will be the big dog for Chapin.

Max Flores - LB Chapin Huskies - Junior

Layne put up huge numbers as a junior. He had three games throwing over 300 yards and one game for over 400. For the season he completed 62% of his passes for 2,503 yards, 22 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. His numbers should be even better this year with top targets Christian Haack and Marcos Hernandez returning. Brandon Layne was unavailable for interview by press time.

Changes for Miners’ Offense in 2011

Quarterback. In the Dictionary, it's defined as "a person who leads or directs a group or activity." In 2011, UTEP has four of them, yet none of the quarterbacks on the roster have extensive experience. The future is now. Senior Tate Smith, Junior Nick Lamaison, Sophomore Carson Meger, and Freshman Javia Hall take over signal calling duties, though only Smith has any experience at the Division 1 level, appearing in four games with the University of New Mexico in 2008. December 18, 2010 marked the end of a dynasty

for Head Coach Mike Price. In his 7 years at the helm of the Miners program, Price has only had two quarterbacks, Jordan Palmer and Trevor Vittatoe. Others have come and gone for a series or two, but Palmer and Vittatoe set the standard every future UTEP quarterback will be judged by. Palmer (2003-2006) and Vittatoe (2007-2010) appeared in 95 of 98 games in that span, Vittatoe having started all 49 games that he played in. Vittatoe ended his career with a school-record 12,439 yards passing (14th on the all-time FBS list), 97 touchdown

This spring, Price opened up the quarterback position, which was WIDE open. Knowing he would need help at the position, the former Rose Bowl winning coach at Washington State recruited the Junior College ranks in California, plucking Lamaison from Mt. had claimed the starter role, with Hall right behind. "I'm pleased with the spring," Price said. "We're getting better all the time and I expect us to continue improving throughout the fall. They've got four months to keep the position they are in right now," Price added of Lamaison and Hall. "They both need to work on becoming more familiar with the offense." In the Spring Game, quarterbacks Hall (14for-23, 152 yards) and Lamaison (8-for-18, 92 yards) combined to throw for 244 yards and established themselves as the quarterbacks to beat. After the Spring Game, Lamaison told Newschannel 9 "The coaches have told me they feel I can have a leadership role on this team.

Then we had an evaluation with our coaches, they let us know a little more in depth where we stand. I feel good about it." The quarterbacks will need help from a receiving corps that was banged up in the spring, especially Senior Donovan Kemp, who missed most of 2010 with a torn ACL. Kemp expects to be 100% by preseason practice. Marlon McClure was expected to make a big impact in 2011, but was released following spring practice for a violation of team rules. Redshirt Freshman Jordan Leslie and Anthony McGhee will earn reps, with newcomer Cliff Tucker adding some excitement to the Sun City. Tucker is a graduate of Chapin High School, and played basketball at the University of Maryland the past four seasons. No doubt UTEP will lean on established running backs like Seniors Joe Banyard, Vernon Frazier and Leilon Myers. 9 starters return on defense, led by Defensive Lineman Bernard Obi, Marcus Bagley and Germard Reed, along with Defensive Back Travaun Nixon. Price added to Newschannel 9, “I'm encouraged about the way the season is going to be. I really am. I'm excited for this year.”

NmSu aggieS 2011 Season Preview

As the DeWayne Walker Era enters its third season, optimism is high in Las Cruces as the Aggies hope to earn their first winning season since 2002. Prior to Walker, NMSU utilized a potent air-raid offense under former head coach, Hal By Aaron Rich Mumme. Unfortunately, they lacked a defense leading to the departure of Mumme and the hiring of DeWayne Walker from UCLA. Now, under Walker, a defensive guru, the balance of the team’s problems tilts the way of the offensive side of the ball. Scoring was the first, second and third problem for the crew from Las Cruces in 2010 – it was just that simple. New Mexico State put just over 15 points per game on the scoreboard. The offense surely needed a makeover. The Aggies were ranked 99th and 89th in passing and rushing yards in 2010. Walker announced in March the hiring of former Kent State head coach and offensive mastermind Doug Martin as offensive coordinator to institute his passing attack. “This of all, Coach Martin wants to be here in Las Cruces and he wants to be an Aggie,” Walker said.

“Being at Kent State and before that at Eastern Carolina, he understands what it takes to build a program. I spent a lot of time talking to him about that very thing. I think he is a leader the players can believe in and buy into his offensive system.” Martin’s numbers speak for themselves. In his last four seasons at Kent State, Martin’s offense recorded a remarkable 16,907 yards of total offense, averaging 422.6 yards per game during that span, including 26.3 points a game. “We obviously have to throw the ball much better than we have the last couple of years and we are going to work very hard on our intermediate and three-step passing games,” Martin said. “I think fans will enjoy the diversity of the offense and the explosive capabilities in the passing game.” The crucial element to a successful passing attack is the quarterback. NMSU appears to be ready to hand the keys over to true sophomore Andrew Manley who ran a similar offense in high school and impressed Walker in the Spring. “I thought the offense really came together, real fast with Coach Martin coming in and installing the offense. Manley had a great spring,” said Walker. “I just feel like we have a system and a personality on offense.” However, hot on Manley’s heels for the starting job is senior Matt Christian who started eight games in 2010. The seasoned veteran admits, though, he is more concerned with getting wins than he is about getting the starting job. “I just like to come out here and have fun. Andrew is as talented as all can be. Everyone knows that he's got a big arm and potential is unlimited for him. I can see

that. If my name is called I'll be ready and if not I will be here to support Drew,” said Christian. “Matt is a great guy. He knows so much about football so he is helping me out so much,” said Manley. “I just want to keep competing and keep getting better, and just advance and keep winning games.” Defensively there are far fewer questions. The biggest, however, will be filling the shoes of departed All-WAC cornerback Devon House who was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in 2010 by the Green Bay Packers. The Aggies have three tough non-conference road games - they will travel to Minnesota, Georgia, and BYU this season. A home slate of Ohio, UTEP, Idaho, and Utah State should provide a good foundation and could generate enough momentum to see New Mexico State finish above .500 for the first time in almost a decade.

Andress: When you have coached for more than 40 years, the teams have a tendency to run together, seasons get cloudy when trying to recall specific memories. I doubt that will be the case for Alan Sepkowitz when, in some distant retirement, he recalls the 2011 season. Andress went undefeated in district last year and has 12 returning starters from that team. Rashad Chisolm at running back, Ryan Metz at quarterback, Devin Simmons at wide receiver, the skill positions are set. Chisolm alone accounted for 23 touchdowns. On defense, Patrick Elliott is back after making 84 tackles. There are some question marks on the offensive and defensive lines but all the pieces seem in place for a memorable season at Andress.

Americas: Before Jack Fields takes his talents to Boise St., he’d like to help the Trailblazers win a district championship. That’s certainly a possibility with a dozen starters returning from last season’s 7 win team. On defense Demetrius Rangel has turned into a ball hawking defensive back. Coach Patrick Melton featured Fields in an I-Formation last season and he delivered 1700 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. This season Fields might turn Americas into a district champion.

Austin: The Panthers run of district titles had ended but Coach Ruben Batista has stockpiled 12 returning starters to re-enter the playoff picture in 2011. Batista will be counting on defensive players like Danny Pena and Jesus Valles to hold games in check while a young offensive unit develops some timing. Linebacker Joseph Camacho will be intimidating with a 6-3, 240 pound frame.

Bel Air: Neighborhoods change and so do schools. Bel Air is now the smallest 5A school in the city but that does not stop the Big Red from competing. Let’s start with Joel Nuñez. He’s just 5-5 and barely moves the scales past 140 pounds, but that low center of gravity makes Nuñez shifty and there’s no tougher competitor in the city. Chris Olivas has 111 tackles last year and will anchor the defense. The days of Bob Savage and Tommy Bonds may be gone but Phil Lopez finds a way to keep the Highlanders playoff contenders.

Burges: If experience matters, and it does, then Burges is in good shape with 15 returning starters for 2011. Included in that number are athletes like Aaron Jones and Monderrio Turner, who can play both offense and defense. The Mustangs got kicked a few times last year winning just a single district game but that was the price for playing so many underclassmen and those same players will be highly motivated this year.

Bowie: Robert Padilla is changing things up on the southside. He’s moved Jesse Lopez from wide receiver to quarterback. It makes sense to have your best athlete get the most touches and Lopez has the skill set to run the Bowie offense. The Bears will growl on defense where Sergio Diaz was honorable mention all state in 2010. Bowie won 7 of 11 games last season and has the potential to be a postseason team this year.

Chapin: The Huskies will find the “mushing” a bit tougher in 2011. There are just six starters returning from last year’s 7-4 squad but don’t feel bad for Rene Hernandez, Chapin will still be a playoff team. On defense, Max Flores returns at linebacker after making 123 tackles in 2010. Offensively, Deandre Turner-Fults is back. He rushed for more than 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. On the outside, Brandon Moss will stretch his 6-2 frame to out leap defensive backs in the endzone. Quarterback is a question mark and that’s critical since the Huskies like to run a no huddle, spread offense which takes time to sync.

Del Valle: When you have won back to back district titles and made 7 straight appearances in the playoffs, you can expect to be anointed District favorites and that’s the roll the Conquestadors will play in 2011. The pantry is a bit bare, there are just three starters back from last year’s 6-0 District Championship team but Jesse Perales knows how to mix and match experience with youth. He has Adrian Gonzalez at quarterback and Freddy Reyes at wide receiver plus a junior varsity that went undefeated last season. Stephen Contreras will be expected to anchor a very young line.

Coronado: The thunder has returned to the mountaintop. The Coronado Thunderbirds could improve on last season’s 6-2 district mark despite returning just 7 starters. The key is defense where Don Brooks has a trio of physical linebackers that stop the run and intimidate quarterbacks. Ivan Garcia weighs just 150 pounds but packs a wallop while Joe Valles and Marco Rodriguez won’t be pushed around. Coronado has question marks on offense where sophomore Bobby Chacon will get lots of carries. Last year the T-Birds were Bi-District Champions, and that is an attainable goal again this season.

El Dorado: The Aztecs have the largest enrollment in the city, 3,192 students and that number is growing. With that many students the law of averages dictates El Dorado should be a playoff team and the Aztecs should deliver in 2011. Coach Jim Althoff has a fantastic offensive mind and he’ll need it as not a single starter returns on offense this season. Not a problem. Althoff can plug in a new set of stars into his spread offense starting with running back Brandon Duchene. Robert Morales is back for his second year as head coach and has 13 starters including running back James Saenz. On the other side of the ball, El Paso runs a unique 3-3-5 defense that will cause opponents problems with Issac Avila at the linebacker position.
