Scissor TLC

IF YOU INVEST IN A HIGH-QUALITY PAIR OF SCISSORS, THEY SHOULD LAST YOU MANY YEARS, AS LONG AS YOU CARE FOR THEM PROPERLY. HERE, SCISSOR EXPERTS BETTERTONS ANSWER SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ON SCISSOR CARE AND MAINTENANCE.

“PROPERLY STORING YOUR SCISSORS WILL PREVENT NICKS IN THE BLADES AND ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE”

How often should I have my scissors serviced?

Depending on usage we advise that you have your scissors serviced every 1-2 years. This is unless they have been dropped or have any other damage, if this is the case please have them looked at immediately. At Bettertons we use Joewell accredited technicians, who have been servicing scissors for over 30 years, to offer the highest quality sharpening. Always ensure you are using a professional scissor sharpening service — a rogue operator can destroy your precious scissors in seconds.

How do I know when my scissors need sharpening?

It’s normal for scissor blades to lose their sharp edge over time. The main sign that your scissors need sharpening is when they fail to cut cleanly. You will feel the blades bending the hair as you cut. This will affect the quality of your work, and could leave your client with damaged ends.

“HAVE YOUR SCISSORS SERVICED EVERY ONE TO TWO YEARS”

How do I lubricate the tension screw?

You need to oil your scissor screw regularly to ensure optimum performance. We suggest a small dab of oil at the end of each day. Open your scissor to a 90° angle and put a drop of scissor oil at the joint, where the blades meet. Work the oil into the joint by opening and closing the blades. This will release any hair, dust, dirt or chemicals that found their way to the joint, and will leave a protective coating.

How should I store my scissors to keep them in the best condition?

Properly storing your scissors will prevent nicks in the blades and accidental damage. The best way to store your scissors is to keep them in the case provided. Always make sure you wipe them clean to remove any product or hair before you store them. You should wipe them after every client.
