The Long Good Hair Day

LOCKDOWN LED TO AN INCREASING NUMBER OF MEN BEING FORCED TO GROW THEIR HAIR LONGER, AND MANY REALISED THEY LIKED IT! DYLAN CHRISTIE, A STYLIST AT MANIFESTO IN LONDON’S COAL DROPS YARD OFFERS HIS TIPS FOR CUTTING AND FINISHING LONGER LOOKS ON MALE CLIENTS.

“FINISH AND PERSONALISE HAIR WHEN IT'S DRY.”

01 Layers remove weight, but maintain length. Layering hair is a great way to give the hair texture and remove the bulk without taking off any external length.

02 Consult your client as to how they wear their longer hair. Whether they tuck it behind their ears, or part it off centre will affect how you cut and section the hair.

03 When drying longer hair, use a diffuser. Most men let their hair dry naturally, using a diffuser will replicate this and avoid putting too much volume in the hair. It will also reduce frizz and fluffiness.

04 Finish and personalise the hair when it’s dry. When its dry, you can see the true texture, length and movement of the hair. Take time to personalise the haircut to your client after cutting in the main shape.

05 Analyse and discuss your client’s hair type during the consultation. Thinking about hair texture and condition will really help you decide what sort of products to use. Serums help with dry and damaged hair, while curl creams build and define waves and curls. Heavier products that contain oil can reduce volume and give more control. Your client will also need to think about using the correct shampoo and conditioner to maintain healthy and manageable long hair.
