DON’T PANIC — MISTAKES CAN BE FIXED

don’t panic!

A new year and a new start doesn’t mean you won’t get the odd thing wrong. Mistakes happen — it’s one of the ways we learn. The secret is to stay calm and not panic.

The truth is most common errors can be corrected, if you have the know-how. Here, two top hairdressers give us the heads-up on how to make good when you get it wrong.

COREY TAYLOR

A common mistake when colouring hair is applying the wrong colour in the wrong place.

Imagine rinsing off your perfectly placed balayage and bringing your guest back to the chair to apply their toner.

You have two colours mixed up, a base 7 and a base 10.

Everything's going great until you switch sides to apply at the front and spin your trolly.

Before you know it, you've picked up the base 7 and applied it to those freshly lightened ends.

1Wipe off the excess colour with a towel or cotton wool.

2Then apply pre-lightener over the section you've just applied the tint to. And voila — it's like nothing ever happened.

3I'm pretty sure this is where the concept of wet balayage came from. I actually did this to my best friend and it turned out to be one of the best colours I've ever done.STAY CALM

When it comes to perming, the most common mistake is not selecting the correct perm strength for the hair type. This can result in over or underprocessed hair. Another common mistake is failing to rinse and neutralise thoroughly, which means the perm will look great on the day then relax and drop too much after the first shampoo. And finally, it’s easy to make the wrong rod type or size selection.

Whatever goes wrong, don't panic, there’s a solution.

1If the perm is too loose, re-perm after 48 hours with a smaller rod and weaker solution.

2If the perm is too tight, invite the client back after 48 hours and start again, using larger rods and a weaker solution, or in extreme circumstances, comb through the weaker perm solution until the curl pattern has loosened then neutralise as normal.

3To correct an uneven curl pattern, first evaluate whether this is due to rod selection or uneven hair integrity, then either re-perm or apply integrity balancing treatments.
