School OF BUSINESS Meet the New Assistant Dean of Student Success ! A bit about your professional background: Cristina Velez Assistant Dean of Student Success School of Business Adjunct Faculty MBA

I have six years of business experience in Colombia working in International Sales and Marketing at a cargo airline company- TAMPA airlines. Then, I decided to come to the USA to study English and complete my MS in International Business. After I graduated, I had the opportunity to work in Boston for two years as a consultant for the Latin American markets at the Yankee Group. Currently, I have 22 years of experience working in higher education at SNHU, mostly in the advising department.

What do you feel is unique about SNHU? In my opinion, Southern New Hampshire University’s uniqueness is its affordable education and career-focused programs. The SNHU campus programs are also studentdriven and one of the attributes that I appreciated the most as a student here was the faculty at the School of Business and how welcome and supported you feel while you are learning.

Why is education important to me and the world at large? I am a firm believer in education and its world impact; my favorite quote “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela.

How do you continue to learn and evolve as a leader in higher education?

In my current role as an Assistant Dean of Student Success, I will have the opportunity to continue to learn and evolve as a leader in SNHU making sure the students have the right support and no barriers to succeeding in their education. The importance of student success in higher education cannot be overstated. It not only has individual implications for students but also broader societal and economic impacts. Beyond work, what’s something you’re passionate about or really enjoy doing?

I am very passionate about the outdoors in NH, I love biking, kayaking, hiking, and snowshoeing. I also love traveling to different islands in the Caribbean, so far I have explored 12 of them and I can’t wait for next year’s trip.

School OF BUSINESS Meet the New Assistant Dean of Operations ! A bit about me professional background: Courtney K. Argiras M. Ed. | Assistant Dean of Operations School of Business – University College Adjunct Instructor – Global Campus

I started my journey here at SNHU almost 5 years ago. I began working within the Vice President of Academic Affairs office and then moved to the International Student Services office before coming here to the School of Business. When I began working at SNHU, it was my first time working in Higher Education! Before coming to Southern New Hampshire University, I was the Assistant Director at a private preschool, which of course is, the complete opposite end of the educational journey! I have also worked in elementary schools, both in the classroom as a teacher and in the administration offices. I have always loved education and knew I would end up working in education for my career, I just never originally thought it would be in higher education. After being here for 5 years though, I cannot see myself anywhere else now! In addition to working here on campus, I am also an adjunct instructor for Global Campus. I teach the Successful Strategies for Online Learning to incoming students, and I admire them all very much for returning to school at varied stages in their lives to pursue more learning. I am so excited to learn more in my new role as the Assistant Dean of Operations and I look forward to growing with our faculty, staff, and students here within the School of Business. I hold my undergraduate degree in Human Development, and my master’s degree in education with a curriculum and reading specialty and I have recently returned to the classroom as a PhD student in the International Business program.

What do I feel is unique about SNHU? SNHU is unique because while we may be known nationwide (or even worldwide) now, at the heart is a beautiful campus set in a wonderful location! I love that SNHU can reach learners all over the world with our global campus, but I also love walking around campus and seeing our students sitting in the new swings or attending sporting events in their blue and gold attire or rushing to get to class on time all the way down in Webster. Not many universities can have such a presence in the e-learning space, but they also hold true to their original values at a physical location. When I was growing up SNHU was a very small campus located on one side of N. River Road. I love driving here each day and seeing all that it has become, and knowing all that it will continue to grow to be in the years to come!

School OF BUSINESS Meet the New Assistant Dean of Operations ! Courtney K. Argiras M. Ed. | Assistant Dean of Operations School of Business – University College Adjunct Instructor – Global Campus

Why is education important to me and the world at large? Education is important to me because we are all better people when we continue to learn, continue to expand upon what we think we know, and connect with more people along the way. Education is at the heart of everything we do as human beings, and everything can be traced back to being educated. I do not mean the smartest person in the room but being truly educated. Taking the time to learn new things, whether that is a new language or a new technological advancement that has come out. People who take the time to educate themselves have a better understanding of the world around them, and the world at large. I think of all the people I have come to meet and know just because of the educational classes I have taken and how much those people's lived experiences have helped me grow. If one stays stuck in their own little bubble, and never experiences or learns anything beyond that, I truly believe they are missing out. The world would be a better place if everyone could have the ability to continue their learning if people would continue educating themselves on political matters at hand and not stay stagnant in what they have been taught to believe, the world would be a better place if people took the time to educate themselves about issues happening all around the world and found a way to help (no matter how big or small). If people all over the world keep learning, and growing, generations to come will benefit greatly.

School OF BUSINESS Meet the New Assistant Dean of Operations ! Courtney K. Argiras | M. Ed. | Assistant Dean of Operations School of Business – University College Adjunct Instructor – Global Campus

How do you continue to learn and evolve as a leader in higher education? I continue to evolve every day! I am honored to start my new role as Assistant Dean of Operations, and I know with that role will come many learning curves and the latest information. I am so excited for this role because of the huge growth opportunities that lie ahead of me! One of the things I am most excited about in this new role is the strategic planning aspect. I am thrilled to be a part of the conversations about what will make the School of Business most successful in the years to come, what are the things we are doing well and what can we improve upon. I will continue to listen to those around me so I can learn from their experience and their knowledge. I will also continue to evolve with the needs of the students. I believe to be a leader in a role is to utterly understand those that you are leading. If we do not understand the students and their needs, how can we successfully lead them in the right direction? I plan to always listen to those around me, that is the only way I will evolve into a better leader in higher education today and tomorrow. I am truly humbled to be able to work each day with the people here in the School of Business, the people on the Academic Operations team, and SNHU as a whole!

Beyond work, what is something you are passionate about or really enjoy doing? Outside of SNHU, you can find me with my 10-year-old daughter, Leni. We live in Bedford, NH, and it is a town I adore! We go to Friday night football games, and the local walking trails, and the small ice cream shop in the heart of town. I am the head coach for the Division 10 cheerleading team, and it is something that I am very blessed to lead. I have coached those girls since they were 5 years old, and I absolutely love doing it! I was just honored with New Hampshire’s D10 Coach of the Year award, and I am profoundly grateful for the time I get to spend with those young girls. I also sit on the Executive Board for the Bedford Youth Football & Cheer Association. This year I also plan to volunteer at the local junior high school in the winter with their cheer team. I enjoy being a part of our town’s Parent/Teacher Group and try to volunteer my time at the public schools whenever I can. I love boating, reading, and eating ice cream. My family has a house on Cape Cod, and it is my genuinely happy place. I love the beaches, I love the small downtowns, and I love being surrounded by my family any time we are all there together! I enjoy traveling and am blessed that my daughter and I have been able to visit so many wonderful places! We spent time in Barcelona, Paris, and Rome this summer and traveling to these beautiful places with her makes them even more special! I hope to continue traveling all over the world for as long as I can, as I continue to learn increasingly each time I travel!
