The Exploration of Kinetic Art
Selvia Novita
Selvia Novita Year: 2 - Unit 2A Drs 01 – Kinetic Art Project Title: The Exploration Of Kinetic Art
OF CONTENT tABLEMy project is about creating kinetic art and space. The definition of kinetic art is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer. Kinetic art encompasses a wide variety of overlapping techniques and styles. The site of my project is Portobello Road, which is the home of the famous Portobello Market, internationally renowned for its antique and vintage items. I inspired
started this project by researching by the mechanism created by
kinetic Theo
artists, and Jansen, a
my project is in renowned kinetic
fact artist.
As I developed my own mechanism, I started to realize that the movement of Theo Jansen;s mechanism is very reminiscent of wings. This in turn made me realise that the mechanism of a wing is closely related to that of the shoulder, which is why I started to explore and focus on shoulder movements. To relate back as to how this mechanism can be used in Portobello, I was focusing on window displays of fashion stores. Right now, most of them use static mannequins to display products. I created something that could possibly attract more attention from shoppers, by using kinetic art within this display. Implementing moving mannequins is the final result.
History Of Portobello Road
“Portobello Road, located in a street in the Notting Hill district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in west London, is known as the world’s largest antiques market”

Sketch Studies of Understanding different movement and type of mechanism
As the beginning of my research, i research on how the movement of the mechanism works. To understand more on how it works such as gears, linkage and how to control the speed of the motor, i learned it by sketching it
Artist Research
Reuben Margolin A Kinetic Artist that creates large-scale kinetic sculptures that use pulleys and motors to create the complex movements and structures we see in nature. He known for his mechanicallydriven kinetic sculptures of wave-forms. The Round Wave Math and the Night Sea:combines the mesmerizing quality of the ocean with an appreciation for interconnection and interaction. Subtly reminiscent of the movement of water, this piece explores the changeability of space and form as well as the human fascination with intricate mechanisms. The work suggests massive natural energies operating in harmony through a delicate interplay of gears, motors, camshafts, and various materials.

Mechanism Experimentation
Theo Jansen The Strandbeest Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives

Design Research, Inspiration and Ideas
During the initial site analysis, I was very interested in window display, specifically concerning fashion. I then explored how kinetic art/sculpture affects the fashion window displays, and to do that I researched two famous British artists – Marchesa and Hussein Chalayan, on things like their clothes structure. I also did research on a famous designer artist, and how they used kinetic art or sculpture to enhance their window display
Marchesa Fashion Studies of Clothing Structure
“My attraction to fashion was very instinctive, and had to do with my excitement about anything to do with the body and the female form, which to me represents power and magic, It›s the ultimate symbol.”

As I interested into shoulder movements and inspired by the wings mechanism, with my ideas, I tried toattach the wing into a mannequin, and the movement seems like a hugging machine. Rather Just attach the mechanism into the mannequin directly, I tried to think how it feels to wear this mechanism and the idea to create all mannquein structure by the mechanism itself is more attractive to cath people attention as it will be different from other mannequin as it will be making some movement.
