Kinetic Window Displays The Exploration of Kinetic Art

Selvia Novita Year: 2 - Unit 2B Drs 01 – Kinetic Art Project Title: Kinetic Window Display - The Exploration Of Kinetic Art

This portfolio illustrates the development of the second part of my project. Its theme is “Kinetic Windows Displays”, specifically in terms of Fashion. This project is driven by the movement of the human body as a representation of the mechanism. The first part of the project, ‘Wings’, was a moving mannequin inspired by the shoulder movement of humans. After developing my research of the movement of the human body, the second part of the project focuses particularly on the movement of the human hand, by creat¬ing a drawing machine. This project also called for further research on fashion, for example the process of making a cutting pattern. This project highlights two main points - with the advancements in technology, it is now possible for machines to make the tailor’s job eas¬ier. However, at the same time, the hand based movement also reminds individuals of the importance and quality of hand-made items. This project places these hand drawing mechanisms on window displays in the Portabello Market in London. These mechanisms are designed to enhance existing Window displays and attract user attention to the displays, and consequently creating interest for the stores in the market. Portabello Market is widely renowned as one of the world’s most famous antique and vintage markets, which reinforces the appreciation of how everything in the past was handmade, creating a stronger connection.

2A Project

My 2a project initially started as a construction project of kinetic art and space. My project and other kinetic artists’ works tend to be generally inspired by the renowned kinetic artist Theo Jansen’s mechanism. In developing my own mechanism for the sake of the project, I started to realize the similarity of Theo Jansen’s mechanism to that of wings. Furthermore, I began to realize that the mechanism of a wings in general are is closely related to that of the human shoulder, hence my exploration and focus on human shoulder movements. To relate back as to how this mechanism can be used in Portobello, I have placed a focus on the window displays of fashion stores. Presently, most fashion window displays use static mannequins to display products. This inspired me to create something that can have a high potential to catch the attention of shoppers, i.e. by using kinetic. Implementing moving mannequins is the final result.

Theo Jansen The Strandbeest Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives

“My attraction to fashion was very instinctive, and had to do with my excitement about anything to do with the body and the female form, which to me represents power and magic, It›s the ultimate symbol.” Hussein Chalayan

During the initial site analysis, I was very intrigued with the concept of window displays, especially concerning that of the fashion industry. Hence, I started exploring the influence of kinetic art and sculptures on fashion window displays. in order to carry on a thorough investigation, I researched clothes structure of two famous British artists – Marchesa and Hussein Chalayan. Additionally, i also did research on how other famous designers used kinetic art or sculpture to enhance their window displays. Rather Just attach the mechanism into the mannequin directly, I tried to think how it feels to wear this mechanism and the idea to create all mannquein structure by the mechanism itself is more attractive to cath people attention as it will be different from other mannequin as it will be making some movement.

Sketch Studies of Shoulder Movements

Rather than just attaching the mechanism on to the mannequin, i began imagining the feeling of wearing the mechanism. I then explored the idea of creating mannequins with structures that incorporates the mechÂŹanisms i have investigated. The reason being is that i beÂŹlieve such a design will be an attention grabber for cosÂŹtumers, especially when kinetic movement is added to the mechanism.

The Metamorphosis of Hum

man’s Hand into Mechanism

As I conducted further research regarding the human body, I was able to translate a human’s body movement into mechanisms. For example, as a part of my research the shoulder movement can be transformed into a wing mechanism, and the hand movement also can be transformed into a claw mechanism. This project therefore explores what is inside our body and how it works, and illustrates it by creating a new mechanism.

Artist of Inspirations

Looking at some Artist inspira¬tions to develop my mechanism, I researched a few artists who have created drawing machines. The reasoning of why i look further into this because i want to develop my ideas of objects being “Handmade” in fashion world

Drawing and Cutting Pattern Fashion Research and Studies

Looking at some inspiration also brings me to re¬search and learn more how to make a cloth. With that idea of “handmade”, i take a look at some sample of how to make a cutting pattern and how to draw it. Displayed here is some research i found, regarding how to draw and put the measurement to create a cloth.

My learning process doesnt stop only on finding how to draw a cutting pattern. I tried to learn and create my own cutting pattern which is shown on the photos,
