my
VISION ANNUAL REPORT
2O17
dear friends, Three short years ago, I shared with you my vision for a program that would build the confidence and aspirations of high school girls and enable them to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities. Not only did you listen, but you also responded with overwhelming support — including gifts of time and expertise, investment, and encouragement. This spring, we will watch with pride as our inaugural class graduates from high school. Now in their third year with the Institute, the transformations we have seen in the girls during participation in the program you helped realize are remarkable. The positive impact you are having is evidenced by their increased confidence, ability to communicate effectively, and willingness to embrace difference. As I travel across the country, I am fortunate to connect with women and share the research behind the Institute and the model of our three-year, evidenced-based approach to the “My Values,” “My Voice,” and “My Vision” progression. More often than not, I am asked two questions: “How can we implement the program in our state?” and “When will you create a complementary program for adult women?” These interactions recall two statistics that have resonated with me. In a Women’s Leadership study conducted by KPMG, 67% of women reported they had learned the most important lessons about leadership from other women. The study also noted that 82% percent of professional working women believe access to and networking with female leaders will help them advance in their career. The power in these connections is in storytelling. When our advisors, facilitators, and guest speakers share their stories with Olympia’s Leaders, as the girls participating in our program
are known, they are relaying their life experiences. The truth and power of how they navigated challenges, took hold of opportunities, and reacted to disappointment help the girls picture how they, too, can respond to similar situations in the future — acknowledging that there will be both ups and downs as they learn and lead. With the engagement of our volunteer advisors and caring supporters across the state, the Institute facilitated more than 5,000 hours of connections between Olympia’s Leaders and women — and men — in 2017. The adults who shared their stories increased the universe of what’s possible for more than 320 girls. What a gift! As we have turned the calendar to 2018, there are two significant milestones we look forward to celebrating with you. First, with the graduation of our inaugural class of Olympia’s Leaders we will have our first class of alumnae — partnering with us once again to design components of the program and network that supports them. And, we will welcome our second class of 180 sophomore Olympia’s Leaders and more than 65 new advisors — making our program 465 girls strong! Along the way, we will continue to share the growth and success of Olympia’s Leaders with you. In time, we look forward to welcoming them in to Maine’s workforce and communities as leaders — lifting us all up. Thank you for the critical role you have played in helping execute our mission to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls. With gratitude,

EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAM DESIGN
Prior to the program’s launch in 2015, the Institute used data to identify challenges
girls face as they transition to high school. Research illustrated that girls’ self-esteem dropped 3.5 times faster than boys during this period. As a result, girls were less
likely to grab hold of opportunities and to want to take the lead. Recognizing the
critical need for female leaders and voices at the table, the Institute focused on the creation of programming that would not only increase girls’ confidence, but also
help them expand their ideas of what is possible for their futures and give them the skills to navigate the organizations of both today, and tomorrow.
To measure outcomes that demonstrate increased confidence and aspirations,
participants take a baseline survey before they enter the program and annual surveys at each year end.

With a program rooted in values, it is critical to the Institute that a diverse group of participants is brought together to explore, and learn to appreciate, difference. In comparison with the ethnicity of Maine, which is more than 95% Caucasian, the sophomores that joined the Institute in 2017 identify with many different backgrounds. Overall, diversity among all

participants has resulted in rich conversations at events,
during monthly meetings with advisors, and in guided, online
forums. While ethnicity is only one dimension of diversity, the Institute uses it as a barometer to gauge the diversity of the classes that have been assembled.

Thanks to an incredible opportunity made possible by The Harold Alfond
Foundation, the Institute again experienced significant growth on its balance sheet. In 2016, the Alfond Foundation awarded the Institute a generous three-year challenge grant that will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by new and increased donations up to 1.4 million dollars. From October 2016 through December 2019, funds contributed by the Alfond Foundation will create a permanently restricted endowment to support the 13%
ongoing delivery of Institute programming in Kennebec, Piscataquis, and Somerset counties. In FY17, the Institute took the first distribution from the Alfond grant which, along with the matching funds raised to initiate the distribution, resulted in a significant boost to the Institute’s assets. With these generous donations, the Institute has begun taking the steps necessary to ensure the delivery of meaningful programming for many years to come. Of course, none of the Institute’s early success would have been possible without

the continued support from its donors. Their dedication to Institute’s mission inspires the board and staff to push even harder. DONOR HIGHLIGHTS FOUNDATION The John T. Gorman Foundation (JTG) name is synonymous with generosity, outcomes, and impact. JTG began its partnership with the Institute in 2015, funding the very first class of 49 Olympia’s Leaders in Androscoggin County. Contributions from JTG have enabled the Institute to earn support from other organizations because everyone in Maine knows a stamp of approval from JTG is an endorsement that your program is evidence-based and truly making a difference in the community.
CORPORATE The Institute is proud to partner with Unum because of how they value and serve their customers, employees, and communities. We are grateful that Unum recognizes and supports the Institute’s program as it raises confidence, increases aspirations, and provides leadership training to young Maine women that may ultimately result in a more robust employee pipeline for future generations of actuaries, underwriters, corporate finance executives, and more.
INDIVIDUAL Ann and Richard Bresnahan have a reputation for supporting programs and initiatives within the areas of greatest need in Maine. They epitomize civic leadership and work tirelessly to improve communities across the state. The Bresnahans, who are founding members of the Institute, made the first major gift to support the Harold Alfond® Foundation’s challenge grant. Their incredible generosity sparked the momentum of the matching grant campaign, and it continues today.
