TOP3“MUSTHAVE”OUTERWEAR PRODUCTS FOR 06-07
by jackhitchcock

o matter what your skill level you will have a better time in snow if you are warm and dry. As a Starfish correspondent I attended the Snow Sports Trade Show in Las Vegas and personally inspected nearly every garment of outerwear available this season. There are literally hundreds of companies offering products that will keep you dry in even the most drastic of arctic settings. ortunately for snoskaters we seldom find ourselves in drastic alpine settings. Snoskaters don’t need thousand dollar parkas and expedition pants that make you look like MC “MFM” Hammer. Snoskaters just need to stay somewhat warm and dry. After a thorough review of all of the new outerwear available I have settled on these three as “must have products” for the coming season...

eet are one of the most important things to keep dry. Our first two “must have products” are sealants for your shoes. It does not matter what kind of snoskate shoes you wear, coat them in this stuff like you are decorating a cake. Coat the laces and the tongue, fill in all the little holes. This should keep your feet dry. For extended sessions put plastic bags over your socks before inserting them into your shoes.
#3
Our next “must have product” for this year is KIWI Canp Dry, most snowboard shops don’t carry it but hunting stores and Army Navy Surplus stores do. Don’t mess around, get yourself the heavy duty and spray every inch of every bit of gear you own (except your goggles). Your gear will almost instantly become expedition weight outerwear.

or this year’s Buyer’s Guide STARFiSH contacted the world’s most elite snoskate companies, and asked them to supply our readers with what’s hot for 07. The format was simple, each of the companies were asked to provide the same basic information... photos, descriptions, dimensions, availability, special powers thier product might have, etc. These responses were then processed, censored, altered and reformatted by STARFiSH to bring you this totally biased board review.

he Seattle based company Mervin Manufacturing (Gnu, Lib Tech, Roxy) has been turning out high-end snowboards, skis and skateboards for over a quarter of a century. Through years of fearless experimentation these guys wrote the book on quality snowboard construction. It is no surprise that Mervin pro duces the best high-end all mountain snoskates. These high quality boards cost a little more to make and therefore retail for ervin will be offering one board under the Lib a higher price. You get what you pay for and the Tech label. These boards are the highest of result is a board that out performs the others. Is it high-end snoskates and retail for $329. The set up is worth the extra money to get Magnatraction? Yes, about 42” long with deep concave, a double kicked tail and magnatraction. When you ride one you will know definitely.

right away where the extra money went. It went to performance, control and pop. Lib sent three photos of this baby, two of the board and one of Jake’s hand. hese are not snoskates they are Noboards. Cholo and his crew up in Vancouver BC offer their Noboard stomp pad as an alternative to snoskating. In the event that you and your friends rent a helicopter for the weekend and fly into the B.C. back country your normal snoskate will just not cut it. The Noboard stomp pad attaches to any snowboard. A fish design is recommended because you are only going to use this thing in powder. Cholo retails the set-up on his web page for 150 Canadian. At that price it is worth checking out. These things seem to work in really good snow. We contacted Cholo about getting some footage for the Substandard Starfish Commercial and what he sent was a mini DV labeled “Binding-Less In The West”. The Mini DV contained almost an hour of these guys totally shredding phenomenal BC powder runs. 3,000 foot powder faces? Huge one footers? Avalanches? For proof check out the Starfish Substandard Commercial and buy the feature film “What’s
Next?”
PAUL ELKINS
A
ll of the companies featured in this board review were asked to provide information about their products. STARFiSH asked them for photos of there products, prices and availability of those products. Only Jordan (Circuit) and Paul Elkins (Fuse) provided any text. This was Paul’s response:
“Bugs are pretty annoying. Sure they’re small, but they make their presence known. Swing wildly at the air or even take off running and these little bastards won’t go away.
They violate your space with incessant buzzing. They bite, sting, or suck exposed flesh indiscriminately. It may not kill you, but it ain’t nice. You can swat a few but there will always be more. When insects attack we are at their mercy. With a small loss of dignity and maybe a few welts, it’s best to just move on. However begrudged, these prickly little creatures cannot be denied.”
A
m I the only one baffled by this response? What the hell does that mean? Does Paul have Alzheimer’s?
A
nyway this is what we know about Fuse Snowskates. They pop like a skateboard, they grind like a skateboard they pretty much are a skateboard, with little skis attached to the trucks. Two companies make this four plank design. One of these designs works and the other one is not the one we are talking about.
Fuse also offers a complete set-up featuring a 7 7/8” Plan B deck. This complete board is known as the “Giant Cricket” and retails for $180. Both of these designs are available through the CCS Catalog.
Fuse offers a 4x4 adapter kit for $80. This can turn any skateboard into a snoskate.

his company is new to me. Probably because they are from England. Apparently in England snoskating is being called snow-surfing. These boards are made to perform more like a surfboard than a skate or snowboard. Bare Foots “big pro” Skindog has even allowed people to film him
Q-R running up to the nose and hanging ten. Wow, Skindog that was a pretty hot surfing move in 1955.
B
are Foot also sent us a promo video. I looks like the boards work pretty well for carving on intermediate, groomed runs. The air shots where somewhat questionable (six angles of one air none of which included the landing) and flip tricks were non-existent. Before criticizing these guys too much it is important to remember that historically the British have been some what “challenged” at alpine sports. There is no doubt thattheseboardswouldperformmuchbetterifoperated by somebody like Geoff Rowley or Jake. The video shows more “operator” errors than “design errors”. The boards appear solid. Bare Foot offers two set-ups. The first is the Multi. It attaches to any ski and retails for £199. The second is the Q-R complete set-up and it retails for £399. Convert the £ to $ and you get the most expensive snoskate available.

ell let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of snoskate trucks. Mr. Hitchcock’s been calling me and asking when he’s going to get his truck article, well my six month bender is coming to an end and I finally drank myself through the little block I was having. I got two words for ya, supply and demand. If people aren’t gonna unstrap and start snoskating, then there’s no real demand for supply. Now that mountains from all over are starting to allow snoskates on the chairs, we should start to see more snoskates in lift lines. Once that happens more trucks are gonna

start breaking, creating a demand for something better. Right now nothing is much different than it has been, (read Trucks article, issue #1 vol. #2 Fall 2005) just a bunch of homemade trucks and hockey-pucks. There is some innovation going on though, there are two part trucks by Rocker Trucks that pivot on an axle giving skates more snap and pop, and I hear Bent Metal may be coming out with something a little taller and stronger for all mountain ripping. If all else fails you can still make your own or ride a Fuse and rock regular skate trucks. So go hang up your snowboard, water-proof your shoes and wax your snoskate, winter is just around the corner. A lot of bad-ass shit went down last year, dudes were killing it all over the map. Hopefully this winter there will be more snoskaters in the lift lines and pretty soon we’ll really start seeing some progression in technology, as well as progression in snoskate skills. If your local mountain doesn’t allow snoskates on the chairs, encourage them to call Booth Creek Resorts or just put on a leash and show ‘em what’s up. Once your ski patrols sees you ripping full runs they’ll get the picture.

Jennifer, STARFiSH’S legendary “Hawaiian
crack whore correspondent”
sent me this package from the islands. It was packaged in coffee and I was skeptical at first. Then Jennifer pointed out what should have been as obvious as Magnatraction. After a long day on the slopes who really wants to feel all beat-up and tired? To test these products I snoskated for about 15 hours straight. Then I ate a few “Crack Sandwiches” To my surprise I felt alert and ready to go out and party almost instantly! I was even more surprised when this feeling lasted for the next three days. Maybe Jennifer was right. Maybe I was “sleeping away my life”. Either way “Crack Sandwiches” are definitely a great way to utilize your precious weekend moments. Jack Hitchcock
