Starfish Special Assignment: Leashes Starfish wants me to write about leashes. Like, I’m supposed to say something about them worth reading. Whatever man. So I went into the Starfish photo vault and pulled out a few shots that kind of show what is going on. Let’s look at a few picks and see if we can make a connection here. Or not. amn, my job is getting easier and easier. Last year I had to hound these guys for a response. This year it only took like five phone calls and five email reminders. After that they all delivered. The format for this year’s board review is pretty similar to last year’s. I contacted the world’s best snowskate companies and asked them to provide information about the availability and prices of their products. They were also asked to provide a “mission statement” and provide our readers with a few sentences about what they are trying to do and why. The following is their response.
the mountains of northern Idaho sequestered Ining in the back of the Edmundson Fine Woodworkshop you’ll find Chillerdecks, a hobby gone
wild. Building ultra wide 7 and 8 ply top decks for mounting onto snowboards, split boards, and big fat skiboards for off piste riding in powder and crud. Decks are vacuum pressed on an adjustable form with available lengths between 36-54 inches, widths between 9.5-13 and ¾ Inch deep concaves. All decks covered in sticky FS grip.
4211 At two inches narrower but with a deep ¾ Inch concave the 4211 is designed to be mounted on to sub decks between 6 and 8 inches in width for all mountain riding. Mount it onto a full sized snowboard, though, and you’ll rip the powder. At 42 inches in length it’s all that’s needed to carve deep turns in the back country. 130.00 grip included

reetings from the Olympic G Penis-ula! The Mervin O.D.P. Department (other despicable
products) has been hard at work this summer making and testing our snowskates out on the glaciers of the Olympic Mountains. This year’s crop of skates are looking sick… and yes…will actually be available in shops this year. All Lib and Gnu snowskates are 100% made by snowskaters who DO NOT snowboard, who know how to make a killer ride, and are constantly tinkering and testing to make the best, most functional mountain destroying snowskates possible. B.J., Harman, and I will see you out on the slopes…so be prepared to ride.
The Gnu skates have been upgraded as well. All decks have thick UHMW sidewalls. The Michigan and Danny Kass skates have a mellow magnetraction similar to the Box Scratcher Lib snowboard. The Toronto skate features a “Superdeck” with a 41” ski and magnetraction and Banana technologies. The Ohio is the only skate with a radial sidecut ski this year.
The Lib skates feature the “Superdeck”, which is a 40”x 9.25” double-kicked, extra concave deck with thick UHMW plastic sidewalls. (That’s snowboard sidewall material, folks…dents rather than breaks.) The Lib skates sell with your choice of 43” or 48” skis, both with Magnetraction and Banana technologies to give maximum turning and edge holding ability. SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT

FUSE Snowskate Co. The big news for FUSE this season is a brand new model. The all new 4X4 skis have been packed full of improvements that have been long overdue. Not that the old stuff didn’t work, but riding pleasure should drastically increase with the subtle but key product upgrades: - One piece mold, strong ass material, no delam. or breakage - Streamlined base design, faster - Bevelled around edge, able to break a turn w/ out getting pitched - Lighter, 1 lb. Lighter per set - Options, removable metal blade for low snow or hard ledges/boxes Basically, these skis are as close as you’re going to get to pure skateability on hard snow and ice. Complete skates are treated with water proofing and come with FUSE trucks and Grip. New this year on all completes is a leash plug. The plug is located on the tail and sits flush to the deck surface. With a short length of string fixed to the plug, you can easily clip the leash on or off depending on the “run out” risk factor. On the marketing side, FUSE is in the midst of an ad campaign in Snowboard and Snowboarder. The ad direction took kind of a mystical approach as per lack of any better ideas. We are really pumped on our team of super shreds. These guys and girl are quickly becoming household names in the snowboard world. They are all chill dudes and into backing the skates. We’ll be looking to get some tape out of their busy world travels.
Other than that, this year is exciting because the new product is here before the snow flies. Busting early season spots will be way easier on the new shit. Aside from drinking beer and waiting for the pow, the CB crew will be making the most of the dirty dismal early season conditions that are so great on the FUSE skate. Look for bigger, better, and tech-ier for the next teaser release. YEEEEAH. Adios, FUSE

his photo of Wolle is one of the best Trun things we’ve seen yet. I would have it bigger but it is a boot leg photo
and it would have looked terrible. Wolle said to use it but I have no idea who Jess Mooney is and she took it. Jess if you are pissed when you see this contact zack@nollies.com and he will put you in
some kind of submission hold. If you are not pissed send more pictures. As for the rest of you readers, don’t worry I will track down more photos of Wolle. Scott Sullivan has them and I know where he lives. Zack will drive out there and negotiate with him.

THE HOLY OLY WAS RIGGED!!! SOMEHOW JAKE’S KICKFLIP, 26 FEET UP THE 28 FOOT QP COULD NOT WIN THE CONTEST.
Miscommunications: Tadd Sackville West would like us to announce that in spite of allegations made by Big John, he was never in any way shape or form associated or representing Spacecraft Clothing. This girl named J.C. from Wenatchee Washington has been pissed for months. Not only because she slept with Terry Parker but because she deserved credits for many of the advertising ideas Terry claimed to have invented. Sorry J.C. Once we published a photo of Will Peddle and said it was taken by Big John. It was actually taken by Page Orb. Sorry Page. Hitchcock spelled some words wrong in his story entitled “25 Years Ago In Starfish” Hilary corrected them but some how they were never fixed. Sorry readers.

i Starfish dudes-dudets, it was a awesome Winter 06-07, riding all the different mountains this year with a strong snosk8 turnout, both veteran riders and the newbies like me. Going through these old archives turned up some some-what interesting contest results. Check out the 18 and older male standings a few people are still kicking it! 15 years and Hurlbut going from #4 strapped to #3 in the world strapless. Cool! Looks like another guy from Mervin is listed also (Kyle Phillips).
I want to thank Joe Mcguire and all the people, sponsors and the mountains for the return of the Northwest Series. It seems easy when we show up and do not think of all the work that it takes to pull it off. The local work on the awards are cool! Also thank you to Krush and the park crew for the Summit events.

DOLPHINS AND BANANAS ing chatter. What really causes a snoskate ski to chatter? If you think about it, it’s obvious. Chatter comes from riding a cambered ski sideways.
hatter is a word used C by snoskaters to describe the sensation felt as a rider’s edge skips across the snow rather than cutting smoothly through it. Chatter leads to out of control turns and has been a problem with snoskates for years. Snoskaters invented Magnatraction to combat the problem. The Magnatraction board has a serrated edge and therefore cuts the snow better allowing the rider more control and reduc-
Skis with convex riding surfaces or cambered skis were created by European ski racers. The idea was that as a skier with one contact point (their foot) initiated turns the ski would flex into the turn creating a radius and providing more effective edge use. The more effective your edge the more control the rider has. More control means smoother edge to edge transfers and faster skiing. Camber was a huge success and became the industry standard for
