As a trainer who spends a lot of time in front of the camera, Brent Bishop puts his charisma to good use. The confident, energetic New Balance athlete and owner of Think Fitness Studios – and a Sporting Life 10K Ambassador – can certainly work a room but he does more than just talk the talk. The celebrity trainer, who dedicates much of his time and energy to inspiring people of all levels to get active and fit, to discover their inner adventurous spirit, and gets down and dirty grinding it out each year at endurance events around the world, but it’s the charitable programs that fuel his passion most. “Linking to a purpose gives you so much more. When you cross that finish line, there’s no better feeling when you’ve given your effort for

something deeper.” “For an event like this (Sporting Life 10K) it’s amazing to see the impact you can make on supporting kids with cancer. Every person contributes to this and it’s such an incredible feeling. The experience of this event with 30,000 people surrounding you is amazing. The community support is huge ... it really is about the experience not the run.” For the 2015 installment of the Sporting Life 10K, Bishop continues to offer his insight and leadership on the fitness preparation side: health consultations, strength training, joint stability, muscle balance, training plans and goal setting, and run meet-ups. “Everyone needs to develop a race plan, this is what will drive them.”

Lace up your runners. Tune up your bike. Get on the court. Spring is in full swing and it’s time to get outside! We run. We run to reach our personal bests. We run to support a cause. We run for our mothers, fathers, sisters & brothers. We run to challenge every inch of our bodies, minds & souls. At Sporting Life, we have always advocated active lifestyle, and running is truly a natural instinct in every person’s life. When we take our first steps as a young infant, we can’t wait to pick-up speed and race against our friends. The freedom you get when you take flight from the starting line is only the beginning of a long journey of steps towards an end goal. As soon as you reach that finish line, you let out a deep breath, take a look around you and let that sense of accomplishment take you over.

Over the years, the Sporting Life 10K Toronto has grown to become the largest stand-alone running event in eastern Canada which has raised over $10 million for Camp Oochigeas (Ooch). The camp provides treatment & getaways for kids with and affected by childhood cancer. This year, Sporting Life is proud to launch the Sporting Life 10K Ottawa in support of the oncology department at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Whether you are a seasoned runner, a casual jogger or just starting out, come out and join us on May 10th for a great day of fun and exercise in support of great causes.

running for time, you need to go out a bit conservatively and start to hammer home towards the end. With about one kilometre to go you’ll need to suffer. 2013 and 2014 Sporting Life 10k Women’s Champion Sasha Gollish suggests not to overlook the mental aspect of training. “From the weekend warriors up to the elite, you need to put in the hard work. Most importantly, start with a fresh slate everyday and put a positive thought into your head. It might be your least favourite workout but maybe you go to a spot where you really love running. Maybe it’s just on the treadmill but you visualize that you’re on the beach. There’s always some way to find something positive about what

If you are interested in free training advice from one of Canada’s fastest woman’s distance runner, Toronto’s Sasha Gollish has it covered in one word: Suffer. “I love racing the Sporting Life 10k, it is mentally taxing and requires a lot of focus and personal resolve,” says Gollish, “It’s an incredible experience to run down Yonge Street with 30,000 people that are supporting such an amazing cause. Don’t forget to reflect on that and enjoy the moment.” The 33-year old winner of Toronto’s Sporting Life in both 2013 and 2014 said this formula is not just for the elite but for anyone who has the fortitude to push their limits. “Your mind gives out far earlier than your body will,” she explains. “Your brain is screaming at you to stop as you are oxygen and energy deprived, but it becomes mind over matter and you tell yourself ‘I’ve put this hard work in and my legs are fatigued and heavy and I can’t go on anymore’ ... but you can.”

Gollish feels this applies to every level of runner – whether running the Sporting Life 10k for the first time or a seasoned racer. “For those that want to just run it and enjoy it, I have the utmost respect for them for being active and I encourage them to make sure they have fun.”

According to Gollish, mental preparation a requirement when training for a race. “Racing is mental,” she states matter of factly. “It’s normally 50 percent physical and 50 percent mental, but it depends on how you wake up that day. It can swing to 90 percent mental, but as long as you’ve done the work then you can rely on your physiology to help you push through.”
