L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F Hello! It’s summertime in the city. Memorial Day has finally come and lake season is here. I can already smell the BBQ grills burning, the fresh-cut grass, and patios all over the city coming back to life. This is my favorite time of year, when everyone gets out and enjoys all the activities summer in the city brings. And while we had what seemed like a never-ending downpour of rain in the last month, it has made everything so pretty and plush. I’m definitely looking forward to biking around a full Lake Hefner this year. June’s issue is our annual Summer Fashion Issue, and we have a great one for you. This year we received full access to shoot at Gaillardia Country Club and all of its beautiful facilities. Spending a day at Gaillardia with full access to the course, clubhouse, tennis courts and pool provided the perfect atmosphere for our theme this year: Country Club Fashion. We brought in three models for this shoot and styled them with the latest fashions from R Meyers, The Factory, Anabelle’s Galleria, Metro Shoe Warehouse, Gil’s, and Slim. Special thanks to all those who contributed to make this photo shoot so great, and to our awesome photographer Lauren Wright, who really brought all of this together. As you turn the pages of this issue, you will also find fun reads and great articles. One of the latest DIY
trends we are taking a special look at this month involves wood pallets. There are so many innovative ways you can use old wood pallets for both indoor and outdoor use and decoration. Turn a few more pages to get our fashion picks and favorites to style up your wardrobe. Also, we have an awesome breakdown of all the movies and shorts to catch at the deadCENTER Film Festival this month. We have exclusive content provided just for our readers as a preview of the great things going on this year at the festival. Make sure to stay caught up with So6ix, as we all will be at all the events and screenings this year. Finally, I would like to say thank you to my Poppa for Father’s Day. My dad has always been the biggest influence on my life. He is a great role model and example of honesty, integrity and hard work, and he has always been my biggest supporter.
I love you Poppa.

It’s that time of the year, the time for tan lines and good times. We’ve picked some of our favorite fashion options for the summer of 2015. You can never go wrong with white or neutrals for summer, but sometimes it’s fun to add a pop of color, like a hot pink or a tie-dye. Even if they’re a pain to use the restroom in (ladies, you know what we’re talking about), rompers are love! It’s the perfect look on a warm and breezy summer day. When it comes to shoes, sure, we love heels, but honestly, you should wear whatever is most comfortable to you. Many of the heel styles can be found in a flat or sandal, such as a gladiator sandal. Whether you wear our fashion picks or choose your own style, it’s definitely going to be a summer to remember! Always be yourself and spread love and light. Soak up the sunshine! Happy Summer!

PROJECT: PALLETS Many times overlooked and too often thrown out, pallets are becoming the latest craze in the crafting world.
\\\
They’re perfect for creating, redoing and building. Be creative when it comes to finding pallets. Businesses will often beg for people to take them off their hands, and they sometimes set them out behind their buildings. Pallets can be found in the oddest of places. Their simplistic design and extremely inexpensive cost make them the perfect focal point for a project. Here are some DIYs to try.
PALLET PATHWAY
Credit: funkyjunkinteriors.net \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Instead of putting the typical stepping-stones in your garden, why not mix it up a little? This rustic look is the perfect way to make two ends meet, while saving money!
Instructions:
What You Need:
• • •
1.
Find a pallet and disassemble.
2.
For a longer-lasting finished product, treat the wood to protect it from water rotting and wood-loving bugs such as termites.
3.
Choose your pattern. Decide which way you want them to run and if you want them to be all the way even or have a more layered look.
4.
Dig a level pathway between the two spaces you want to connect or walk between.
5.
Place the individual boards in the dirt. You can pack a little bit of dirt in between the individual boards, but their weight should keep them inplace on their own.
2 or more pallets Hammer or nail remover Shovel
RAISED GARDEN BED
Credit: brightnest.com \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Love this idea! Often when you’re starting seeds, they need to be sowed in perfect rows. Well, this almost makes it too easy. If you’re OCD like me, the perfectly planted rows between the wood separators will make you breathe a sigh of relief!

What You Need:
Instructions:
• • • • • • •
It’s important to choose a pallet that has been out in the rain, so that any harsh chemicals are washed off. Or, if you can find a pallet stamped with “HT,” that indicates that it has been heat-treated, not treated with chemicals that can contaminate plants and soil.
Pallet Pry bar or hammer Soil Flowers or succulents Garden spade Landscape fabric Stapler
\\\
BAR/BUFFET TABLE Credit: mobilehomeliving.org \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ I'm a little obsessed with this idea. How many times have you had friends over and needed more space to set things up outside? Use this as a bar area or a buffet table. When you’re not entertaining, let it be home to a few planted pots of your favorite flowers.
What You Need:
• • • •
2 pallets Tools Cement blocks Paint color of your choice
Instructions: 1.
For this project you’ll need two regular-sized pallets. There are different styles of pallets, and with some, like European pallets, one may be wide enough to stand on its own.
2.
If using two pallets, take off the back panels of each of the pallets. Face them inwards toward each other and either screw or glue together. Make sure the bind is strong enough to support the weight at the top.
3.
Choose a paint color and paint, or leave them as-is for a traditional wood look.
4.
Place three cement blocks (or however many you need to cover the length) at the top, creating a surface.
5.
You’re done! Enjoy by placing decorative pieces on top and using as a countertop, or even a buffet table for entertaining guests.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
1.
Use a pry bar or hammer to remove every other board, leaving a wide enough space to use as rows for your garden.
2.
Cover the bottom and all four sides of your pallet with landscape fabric. Lay the pallet face down and stretch the fabric into place. Staple the fabric into the wood every few inches. This will help the soil stay in the pallet.
3.
Fill the pallet up with soil. You can do a garden soil or mix equal parts soil and compost.
4.
Brush off the top of the pallets to remove excess soil.
5.
Use the garden spade to dig holes in the rows of soil for your plants. Plant directly into the soil, covering the roots and base of the plant.
6.
Water and enjoy! so6ix.com | JUNE 2015

HANGING SHELF Credit: mobilehomeliving.org
\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The pallet hanging shelf is a perfect way to give an empty wall a rustic look. Some of us may not be the most crafty when it comes to woodwork and shelf-building. This one is almost too simple!
Instructions:
What You Need:
• • • •
1.
Clean the pallet of any excess dirt or grime. You may not want that hanging in your home. Also make sure that the back side of your pallet is open and has a horizontal board running across to create a shelving space.
2.
Prepare the space where you are going to hang the shelf. Make level marks where your nails or screws need to go.
3.
Have a partner help hold the shelf up, flat side against the wall, while you hammer or screw it in.
4.
Make sure it’s level. Set things on the shelf and decorate!

PALLET PLANTER Credit: kellymoorebag.com \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ How cute is this?! The pallet helps keep the planters up off the ground, eliminating mess and keeping pesky pets from digging.
What You Need:

Pallet Hose clamps Screws Terra-cotta pots
Instructions: It’s easiest to find the terra-cotta pots first and take them to the plumbing section of your hardware store, to make sure that the hose clamps will fit the pots.
22
so6ix.com | JUNE 2015
1.
Set the pallet against a wall or vertical flat area.
2.
Get each clamp sized correctly by fastening it around a pot, just under the lip.
3.
Remove pots. Screw the clamps into the pallet at various places and heights. Once secure, place the planted pots on the pallet. You’re done!
\\\\
DO-IT-YOURSELF DESK \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ This simplistic and chic design is the perfect addition to any bare corner or wall. This one does take some craftsmanship and building, but the end product is worth it.
What You Need:
• • • • • •
Pallet 3 1x4 wood pieces Paint Screws & screwdriver Saw L bracket
Instructions: 1.
Face the flat part of the pallet against the wall.
2.
Cut the 1x4 pieces of wood to fit the length of the desk. Create an “L” shaped piece by connecting two pieces; this will be the desk’s support.
\\\
3.
Screw the L bracket into place against the back of the pallet, one at each end.
4.
Screw two of the wood pieces into place, creating the working desk space.
5.
Screw the third wood piece on top of the pallet closest to the wall.
6.
Screw the entire pallet desk structure into the wall. This will ensure it does not topple over forward.

Meet male model Sean, the stunner from Georgia. Sean recently starred in Taylor Swift’s worldfamous “Blank Space” music video. A funny thing about this model is that he was discovered on MySpace. Oh, the good ol’ MySpace days. His current manager saw his prom photos, and two weeks later Sean was on a plane to New York City, and BAM, he had a modeling career. In 2009 Sean was named the world’s most successful male model by Forbes magazine. He’s been featured in many editorials and advertising campaigns for the big dogs, like Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ralph Lauren.
Fun Facts: • If he wasn’t using his good looks on runways and in print, he would be doing something in biology. He’s always loved it and he spent a lot of time at Sea Camps when he was a kid. • His favorite food? Steak. He’s learning to cook and is falling more in love with his kitchen every day. Easy to look at AND he cooks? Sign us up.

EATS There’s a cozy little café tucked away in northwest Oklahoma City with no more than 15 tabletops. Bonjour should not be judged by its size: its food is nothing short of delicious. This gourmet eatery is the newest venture from mastermind Chef Vuong Nguyen. There is no denying Chef Nguyen’s talents, which result in oh-so-tasty creations. Chef Nguyen completed an apprenticeship under world-renowned Chef Kurt Fleischfresser of the Coach House. He went on to open the well-loved Guernsey Park as head chef. Bonjour is serving up breakfast and lunch made from the freshest ingredients. This eatery is one of a kind, as every little thing is made in-house: the ketchup, the breads, the mustard and salad dressings – you name it, Chef Nguyen is making it from scratch in the kitchen. The menu is comprised of many hearty classics, like the turkey club and eggs Benedict, and many creative originals, like the breakfast Reuben and Caesar potato salad. Coming to this spot feels like coming home or relaxing in a friend’s kitchen: easy conversations, music playing, and Chef Nguyen in the back cooking up tasty eats that smell incredible. We asked Chef Nguyen what his personal favorite dish on the menu is, if he had to pick one, and he replied that it would be the breakfast Reuben. This creation is house corned beef and pastrami on a waffle with Russian dressing, sauerkraut, Gruyere and a poached egg, finished with whole-grain mustard and parsley and served with home fries. Can you say YUM? Bonjour is the newest must-try spot, perfect for a tasty lunch or for brunch on the weekend with your friends.
What We Tasted: Spinach Salad Spinach with onions, carrots, grapes and walnuts in a ginger dressing with roasted chicken. Eggs Benedict Ham and eggs Benedict on English muffins with hollandaise sauce, served with home fries. French Bomber Roast beef on homemade focaccia with sautéed mushrooms, provolone and a French onion jus, served with Caesar potato salad. Salmon Linguine In jalapeno-garlic crème sauce with tomato, spinach and red bell pepper. Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding Served with orange whipped cream, herbal mint tea anglaise and chocolate sauce. Iced Coffee

You literally won’t be able to say no to their seasoned, crispy French fries: they’re a MUST. Complete the perfect trio with an old-fashioned creamy milkshake. (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)
Communicating your ideas will come easily but may not be received well by others this month. On the 3rd the full Moon gives you the opportunity to break away from the tension filled atmosphere and travel or at least engage yourself in something that takes your mind off your problems. The New Moon on the 17th requires complete focus on your part especially if you’re dealing with contracts and other important agreements. It’s a good time to talk through your problems with your romantic partner or spouse.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)
You must be careful not to let friendly play and sport deteriorate into disputes or arguments over money especially around the 3rd or 4th. You must remember that competitive situations are not necessarily a do or die experience. You're taking things wait too seriously. Using your intelligence and skill you can gain a lot more fulfillment in your relationships and closest partnerships. A legal contract may also be bothersome now but an opportunity to increase your cash flow after the 17th.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)
A health crisis may be looming if you’re not aware enough of what your body is telling you now. Much of this has to do with pressure at work or in your studies so do take time out if you’re not feeling up to par. The new Moon on the 17th occurs in your 12th house of retirement and withdrawal indicating an opportunity for you to re-evaluate your life and get things generally back on track.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)
Controlling friends is a recipe for disaster in relationships now – and the lesson this month is to allow people to simply be who they are. Friends aren’t necessarily sympathetic to your personality or ideals. New friendships and fresh opportunities emerge around the 3rd of the full Moon. You may not be able to capitalize on romantic opportunities until the second half of the month after the new Moon. You need to offset the stresses of day-to-day living by enlightening yourself with alternative entertainment. Get out; listen to music, if that's your preference.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)
This is an excellent month for your professional activities but you may be burning the candle at both ends especially in the first week of the month with the full Moon cautioning you not to stretch yourself too thinly in helping others. Finish your own work first and then render assistance to 3rd parties. Your ruling planet Mercury makes difficult aspects to Neptune between the 18th and the 24th so do take care not to make any hasty decisions as your thinking isn’t clear.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)
You’re under some confusion about how to deal with people in your workplace or possibly even customers and those who service you. Being too nice sometimes means others step all over you and take advantage of your good nature. After the 17th you’ll have the opportunity to change that and draw the line in the sand when dealing with others. You have to be cruel to be kind as well as playing hardball to maintain your self-respect and that’s a lesson you may start to learn this month.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20) A period of cooling off in your relationships has now passed and you can get back to the joy of relaxing with those you feel close to. It's important not to carry ill feelings forward and if you still have some residue from a blow-up or some other issue it's best to deal with it now rather than burying it deep down inside. The new Moon on the 17th is a wonderful omen for reviving love and romance.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)
Your karmic lessons surround money at this time and with the early full Moon and conjunction of Saturn you may not see the results you want but you’ll certainly understand exactly what it is you need to do to get your finances back on track. Uranus continues to wreak havoc on many Scorpio work environments and what is necessary now is a levelheaded approach to creating a more comfortable environment to produce better quality work.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18) Stop wasting your time even if an idea seemed wonderful in the initial stages. The difficulty is how much time, effort and money you’ve already invested on something that you already know isn’t going to give you the return. Sometimes it's better to cut your losses rather than invest more and more in a losing concept ( or person ). The 3rd and 4th as well is the 8th, 10th and 11th may be challenging days in this respect.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)
This month is important particularly between the 22nd and 24th when the Sun and Mars enter your 8th house of shared finances. This sector also has to do with your sexual and intimate relationships so this may also be an area of your life that you have to work hard on. The new Moon on the 17th precedes these two important transits and signifiers a brandnew approach in the way you deal with the public generally. This also indicates new opportunities romantically.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) You could feel depressed about work during the first few days of the month but this will pass rather quickly leaving you with more important challenges than your concern for the tedium of your day-to-day tasks. The full Moon could make you emotional so be careful how you deal with co-workers especially employers. The new Moon this month on the 17th heralds the beginning of a new cycle in your domestic sphere as well. For some of you this could indicate a change of location or even a holiday.
You can be head strong in your attitude because weakness will cause failure in opportunities at hand. But you do need to be careful as the retrogression of Mercury indicates setbacks if you’re too rash in the way you approach work and business. The careful balance is what is needed. The full Moon on the 3rd is excellent for reviving your friendship in love and when the new Moon occurs on the 17th a fresh new chapter in your life will make your emotional circumstances much rosier. so6ix.com | JUNE 2015

EZRA GENTLE
PRODUCER & DIRECTOR – LONE MAN’S LAND Meet Ezra! He’s the mastermind behind the local documentary being released at deadCENTER film festival this year, “Lone Man’s Land.” “Lone Man’s Land” is an Oklahoma Western saga about a panhandle ranch family that is fighting to keep their land. This story takes place in Kenton, Oklahoma. Many of us Okies aren’t even familiar with this town, the westernmost town in Oklahoma with a population of only 20. Kenton sits just six miles from Colorado and three miles from New Mexico. This quiet cattle ranching town is involved in an ever-growing battle for land. To give you a little history, Oklahoma had an oil boom and there was a high demand for land here between 1907 and 1930. The state quickly realized they could get a high price for the land if they sold it. They forced our lease land, which was land designated to generate revenue for public education and buildings, to be relocated into the panhandle, specifically Kenton. This lease land has been the backbone of our funding for our school systems, and over the years our education funding system has collapsed on itself. Instead of schools being funded by the local communities surrounding them, we are relying on the poorest and least-populated county in all of Oklahoma. Additionally, each October there is an auction for the land in Kenton, which is greatly desired by big-name corporations. The ranchers are forced to bid on their own land, and many more times than not, they cannot outbid these mega-companies. This system forces longtime family ranch handlers out of their own land with nowhere to go. The purpose of “Lone Man’s Land” is to raise awareness of these issues. If you’re not happy with our education system and politics, look a little deeper and make yourself aware of all of the circumstances and factors. Ezra’s purpose isn’t to narrow the scope or be single-minded about his topic. His passion is for justice and for ending oppression, and to see people treated fairly. Ezra became interested in this story after reading a couple of articles generalizing the need for a look into the state education system funding and the lease land issues. He made numerous research trips up to Kenton, spending time with the people whose land was being taken away. He has always wanted to make films, but he never saw himself making an underbudget documentary film. Ezra has always been fiction narrative-driven and he really finds his passion in working with actors, shaping performances and writing dialogue. He never really thought about capturing life as it happens (a documentary) until it became his reality. Ezra’s interest in telling stories and making people laugh was sparked in high school. Eventually this merged with his love of movies, and he went on to study filmmaking in college, graduating from the University of Oklahoma. Fun facts about Ezra: Although born in Oklahoma, he lived many years of his childhood on the west coast of Africa in the country of Namibia with his missionary parents. He later moved back to Oklahoma. During the making of this film, being on such a miniscule budget, Ezra survived financially only by the compassion shown to him by his loving parents as well as his aunt and uncle. Ezra is recently married to his wonderful wife Amanda, with whom he loves to travel the world. One of his favorite places is Paris, which there’s something very romantic and true about. Ezra’s inspiring passion for people and for doing the right thing is evident even after spending just a short amount of time with him. Do what you can with what you have, and you too can make a difference. You can see “Lone Man’s Land” at deadCENTER Film Festival, or this summer, when it will be independently distributed.
