Hello
I’m so very excited that my favorite holiday is almost here. Delicious turkey, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and the world’s best pecan pie made by my momma! I love to eat and nothing feels more like home than Thanksgiving food. The best and most important part, though, is sharing time with those you love. Gathering together as a family and just being together, catching up on what’s been going on, laughing together at silly old memories and making new ones in the process. One of life’s great gifts is being loved. Surround yourself with those you love and give thanks for that love. Okie Honor Awards is here! This issue kicks off our annual Okie Honor Awards. We are so very proud and humbled by the massive participation Okie Honor Awards has garnered each year, and we are really excited to make this the biggest year yet. This November issue is our nominations period, in which everyone can nominate the person, service provider, restaurant, place or any other part of Okie culture that they believe is #1. From November 1-15, you can text in your vote for each category to help us get the final top 5 for
our December finals. If you haven’t participated in the past, please do this year. These awards mean a lot to the deserving recipients who work so very hard and give their best to our city. It’s very easy and super fast to do. This issue is also chock-full of amazing things for your home. I can tell you, we have some really awesome home stores and service providers here in OKC. So many talented craftspeople who make things with love and pride. So many local retailers who do everything they can to give their own personal touch. We have been very fortunate at So6ix to partner with all these great Okie products and brands so we can show them off. I hope you enjoy this issue – we worked very hard to make it for you.

Q: The police never read me my “rights” when I was arrested. Does this mean my case gets dismissed? A: Miranda rights (aka the right to remain silent) are only required if you are in custody and being interrogated by police. Miranda is not a prerequisite to arrest. Most arrests do not implicate Miranda. However, if you are interrogated while in custody and you were not given Miranda, the appropriate remedy is exclusion of any incriminating statements you may have made, not dismissal of the case.

Q: What is discovery? A: Discovery in a criminal case is the process through which I can obtain any and all information from the State related to the prosecution of your case. The State has to hand over the good with the bad. I can file the appropriate motions and requests to ensure that we have all the information to effectively defend your case.

Q: What is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony? A: In Oklahoma, there are two classifications of criminal offenses: misdemeanor and felony. Misdemeanor offenses carry no more than up to 1 year in jail, whereas felony offenses can carry up to life in prison. Even without jail time, convictions for a felony can have farreaching effects on your ability to work in certain fields and qualify for certain licenses. If you are charged with any crime, contact me so that I can protect your future!

MEET STORMIE!
Owner: Jacquelyn Green This 13-month-old Maltipoo pup is funny, bubbly and ornery. She’ll probably become your best friend if you feed her her favorite treat, Goldfish crackers! She is the sweetest, most playful little pup. Stormie loves to play fetch with hair scrunchies. She loves to have you shoot them like rubber bands and she will bring them right back, only to have you do it again and again and then probably again. This sweet girl brings so much love and playfulness to her owner’s life and all who get to meet her.

Since 1984 Oklahoma City has enjoyed the signature dishes and service of Ned’s Catering, which you can now experience at a brick-and-mortar in northwest
EATS
OKC. This family catering business has worked up quite a résumé. In catering for famous entertainers like Jason Aldean, Justin Timberlake, Bon Jovi, Luke Bryan and many more, they’ve cooked for some of the best. You don’t make it this far without quality product, so you know the Shadids are insanely good at what they do, and we’re so lucky they finally have a restaurant to visit! You’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time in this oh-so-cool retro space. We tasted our way through some of the favorites on their diverse menu. You’ll find a lot of Mediterranean influence throughout, but there’s inspiration from plenty of other cultures as well. You can’t go wrong with any single choice on the menu and we seriously recommend it all, but don’t overlook their burgers. They’re large and in charge and packed full

Their bar is one of the best in town and they’re whipping up delicious, creative cocktails that will make your day. They’re rolling out seasonal menus as well. BELLE KITCH E N 7509 N. MAY AVE., OKC, OK 73116 405.430.5484 | BELLE-KITCHEN.COM Belle Kitchen started in 2015 in northwest OKC and has been pulling in all of the awards ever since. It was voted the #2 bakery in Oklahoma City by BuzzFeed. Also, the Travel Channel named it the best doughnut shop in the state! Countless hours of creativity, experimentation and refinement have gone into every product that comes out of their kitchen. All of their baked goods are made fresh on-site throughout the day using natural ingredients, so you know you’re getting the highest-quality and best-tasting product possible. They’re SO good, and the awards speak for themselves. Belle Kitchen is the perfect place to stop by for breakfast or a midday snack. They also do catering, weddings, showers and special events.
UR /BUN 431 N.W. 23RD ST., OKC, OK 73103 405.602.1534 | URBUNEATS.COM Sun’s out, buns out – UR/BUN, that is. Korean steamed buns are very popular and luckily we have our very own spot featuring the delicious cloud buns. If you’ve never had this Korean food favorite, the best way we can describe it is like a fluffy, flavorful cloud pocket of heaven – seriously. This quaint eatery only has a few tabletops and bar spaces lining the walls, but it lacks nothing in the flavor department. They have a fairly simple menu, but each and every item is carefully thought out. They make some of the best made-in-house sauces you’ll try. What we love about this spot is that it’s so different from your typical restaurant. It’s quick, quaint, unique and oh-so-delicious.
S HEES H MAH AL 4621 N. MAY AVE., OKC, OK 73112 405.778.8469 If you’ve ever wondered what authentic Indian and Pakistani cuisine tastes like, you need to stop by Sheesh Mahal. You haven’t tasted true authentic curry until you’ve tried theirs. They’ve got every possible option you can think of, from vegetarian dishes to chicken and even goat! Their rice is cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of spice to wake up your taste buds. The chicken biryani and masala rice with a kabob is a definite must-try. If you love bread like we do, then their roti and naan are for you. The location itself is set up in a unique and exotic way, and it will make you feel like you are dining in another country altogether.
THE COW CALF-H AY 3409 WYNN DR., EDMOND, OK 73013 405.509.2333 | THECOWCALFHAY.COM This local favorite is serving up out-of-this-world burgers! It’s a place for all ages, with unique and creative burgers as well as the classics, just like Grandma used to make. You can’t go wrong with any choice here, but we recommend the Classic Cow Cheeseburger with all the traditional fixings. Or if you’re looking for a little adventure, try the Mad Cow Burger: premium black Angus beef topped with tender diced grilled chicken, American cheese, pepper jack cheese, grilled Idaho potatoes, smoked bacon and homemade spicy ranch dressing. You’ll find a few chicken, sandwich and appetizer options on the menu as well. It’s a simple little spot, but they’re whipping up burgers full of flavor that’ll have you stopping by again and again.

GIVING FOR GOOD
DRESS FOR SUCCESS OKC Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
Dress for Success has expanded to more than 150 cities in 30 countries.
They’ve helped more than one million women work towards self-sufficiency.
More than 13,000 men and women generously donate their time and talents every year.
64% of women live below the poverty line.
Dress for Success is helping to empower women across Oklahoma City and beyond. They help women achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Their purpose is to offer long-lasting solutions that enable women to break the cycle of poverty. They provide each client with professional attire and accessories to secure employment, but more than that, their programs furnish each woman with a confidence that she can carry forever. Poverty often affects women the most, and its effects on women and their families can last a long time. Therefore, addressing women’s needs is central to improving the quality of life not only for the women but for their families. Each client is by referral only, from referral agencies, and women must have an interview before receiving clothing. The clients come to Dress for Success from places like non-profits, homeless shelters, immigration services, and job training programs. They’re able to receive interview clothing as well as gain access to a career center that helps with things like computer and Wi-Fi access, printing and faxing, résumé building, job search and application assistance, and so much more. They’re truly helping empower and enrich the lives of these women, which in turn enriches the lives of their families and our community as a whole.
HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE
GET INVOLVED
They are continuously in need of clothing donations in all sizes. They accept new and nearly new professional attire, handbags and accessories. Schedule a donation drop-off via their website. They are also always in need of monetary donations, from which 100% of the funding goes to programs and services like the career center.
Dress for Success always needs help from energetic, intelligent and kind individuals to volunteer! They’re in need of personal shoppers that help work one-on-one with clients, sorting/ project volunteers to go through donations, career coaches to help clients in the job application and interview processes, speakers, administrative and office assistance, and so much more. Fill out a volunteer application on their website.
