shop Local meet your local stores & owners One of our most favorite things about the state of Oklahoma is the endless support of all things local. This movement to shop for locally made products and frequent local businesses makes us so proud of our fellow Oklahomans. Our streets and districts are booming with locally owned shops selling items that vary from clothing to gifts to shoes to home décor. The owners of these stores are what make them special. They take pride in their stores and in their state, and it shows. With the convenience of online shopping, it’s more important than ever to support the local shops. If there’s something you’ve been searching for online, there’s a good chance you can find it locally and for a better price. Each item in these stores is handpicked and carefully chosen by the owner, and more often than not the selections are one of a kind. We hope that you get to know your local business owners and invest in them as much as they have invested in you and this community. As always, we encourage you to shop local when and where you can. 12

Since 2012 Plenty Mercantile has been a sustainable retailer and event venue powerhouse for Oklahoma City. They first opened shop in Automobile Alley, and in 2017 they expanded to Spring Creek Plaza of Edmond. Mom and daughter duo Traci Walton and Brittney Matlock saw a need for a sustainable retailer to bring responsibly produced goods to consumers and allow them to shop with confidence. Nothing like this existed at the time, and Oklahoma City was primed for new businesses and shops in the downtown area, and so Plenty Mercantile was born. Their favorite thing over the years has been getting to know their guests and watching families grow through their milestones. The team is like a family, and they get to celebrate engagements, birthdays, graduations, new babies and all the important moments, both through gifts and through celebrations at The Venue, their stunning event venue. One of the most special things about Plenty (and there are many) is that they truly dig to find unexpected or uncommon products that fulfill Plenty's mission without compromising aesthetics and high function. They do their homework thoroughly. Not only do they offer quality products, but they support people and companies making wise decisions in the fabrication of their products and that have a mission of giving back. When you’re purchasing at Plenty, you’re buying the best of the best, right down to the core. 16

PuppyMONTH OF THE
MEET BEANS!
Owner: The French Family Say hello to this energetic, bubbly and VERY mischievous 10-month-old mini pinscher mix. Beans’s name comes from both his energy (like a Mexican jumping bean!) and the little beanshaped spots over his eyes. But that energy is all in good fun because his sweet personality shines through. He was adopted from Pets & People in Yukon and gets so excited when his family comes home every single day. He doesn’t quite know how to bark yet, so instead he does a little “aroo” and it’s just the cutest thing ever. His favorite treat? Anything he’s not supposed to be eating! Especially bacon, fresh from the kitchen countertop. Play with him and he’ll forever love you. Say hi to this sweet pup if you see him around town! 50

INSANELY GREAT WINGS, DELICIOUS FOOD, CRAFTY COCKTAILS AND A LOCAL OWNER – there’s not much more you could ask for in a restaurant, and we’re thankful we have Eddie’s! If you’re a resident of Edmond, there’s

a good chance you’ve seen or heard of Eddie’s, as it sits right across from the UCO campus. They’re serving up delicious award-winning wings in just about every flavor you can imagine: from hot to sweet to tangy, they have it all. Kicking Bourbon, Carolina Mustard, Lemon Pepper, Gochujang, and Chipotle BBQ are just a few of the flavors we recommend trying. If you’re a fan of heat, we dare your taste buds to give Scorpion or Carolina Reaper a go. While the wings might be the star of the show, you absolutely cannot overlook the rest of the menu at Eddie’s! There’s a common misconception that all “bar food” is frozen, fried or one of about 3 different options. Eddie’s is anything but. They’re a complete scratch kitchen bringing you the best of the best. We got to try our way around the menu and every single dish blew our expectations out of the water. We need to pause for a

R IV IER E MOD E RN BANH MI 905 N. HUDSON AVE., OKC, OK 73102 405.604.3446 | RIVIEREOKC.COM Riviere Modern Banh Mi is a locally owned and operated New Vietnamese restaurant and bar in the Midtown district. Banh Mi is the fusion of French baguettes with typically some type of meat, paired with ingredients like spicy aioli, pickled carrot slaw, jalapeños and cilantro. It’s the perfect sandwich that you never knew you needed. The owners wanted to bring this popular and oh-so-delicious concept to Oklahoma City but with their own twist. On the menu, you’ll find several different Banh Mi varieties outside of the “norm,” but you’ll also find plenty of other Vietnamese dishes like lettuce wraps, pho, vermicelli noodle bowls and much more.
THE R&J LOUNGE & SUPPER CLUB 320 N.W. 10TH ST., OKC, OK 73103 405.602.5066 | RJSUPPERCLUB.COM Wonderful drinks, a marvelous menu and enticing tunes – we’re speaking of R&J’s, of course. This quaint little spot in the booming Midtown district is a gem. They’re doing all the standards but in their own special way. Their beverages are reminiscent of a simpler place and time, with a focus on classics like Singapore Slings. It’s a popular place for cocktails, but their food is not to be ignored. They’re serving up sentimental flavors inspired by family recipes. We highly recommend the shrimp and grits or the homemade bacon with truffle and bleu cheese. As the weather cools off a touch, take a seat on their amazing patio.
THE DR UM ROOM 4309 N. WESTERN AVE., OKC, OK 73118 405.604.0990 | DRUMROOMOKC.COM The Drum Room Fine Fowl & Fixin’s is located in the popular Western Avenue district near other local favorites like Sushi Neko and Musashi’s. The Drum Room offers up plenty of delicious chicken options, but it’s best known as being Oklahoma’s quintessential fried chicken and waffle eatery. Each chicken is seasoned with a secret spice blend and fried to perfection. While the chicken and waffles might be the star of the show, you don’t want to overlook some of their other items, like their fried chicken nachos or fried okra. You can even order a fried chicken and waffle sandwich that is piled high with chicken, bacon and cheddar. There’s nothing too fancy about this joint, and that’s the way it should be. It’s an iconic place to grab lunch or dinner and dig into some fried chicken!
BIG TR UCK TACOS 530 N.W. 23RD. ST., OKC, OK 73103 405.525.8226 | BIGTRUCKTACOS.COM After starting out with just one truck, Big Truck Tacos has taken the city by storm. Back in the day, in only their second year of business, Big Truck was voted America’s Favorite Food Truck in a nationwide contest on the Food Network! People drive in from all over to stop at their restaurant on 23rd Street, where they’re serving up delicious tacos that are always in demand and not to be missed. They’re using only the freshest ingredients and catering to different tastes by combining flavors from every spectrum. You truly can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, but we recommend the Fried Shrimp Taco or the Crispy’cado.

PET FOOD PANTRY OKC Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
5-10% of homeless people have dogs and/or cats.
Pet Food Pantry serves more than 300 people to help care for more than 820 pets each month.
They have over 40 drop-off locations across the metro for donations.
Each month they deliver 10,000 pounds of free pet food and supplies.
Pet Food Pantry has stepped up in a big way to help our furry family members in need. They’re providing and delivering free pet food and supplies to low-income seniors, veterans, homeless people, and those in domestic violence shelters so they can feed and care for their pets. Pet Food Pantry doesn’t want to see anyone digging through trash to find food for their furry companion or face the decision of giving them up. It’s more than just food: PFP assists in providing routine vaccinations, spaying/neutering, collars, leashes, tags and shelters. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for these pets through and through. They are making a big impact in such a positive way. By delivering more than 10,000 pounds of free pet food, supplies, and flea/tick preventative, they are able to care for more than 820 pets across the metro. Just $25 helps provide food and supplies for one of these pets for an entire month. Pet Food Pantry hosts several events throughout the year to help raise money for these pets and they’re always looking for volunteers. Just because someone might not have the means to care for their pet in the way they intended doesn’t mean they can’t get taken care of, and Pet Food Pantry is doing all they can to make sure that happens.
HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE
GET INVOLVED
There are several donation locations across the metro for food and supplies, and they are also always in need of monetary donations or Sam’s Club and Walmart gift cards. You can donate monetarily on their website or mail in your gift cards.
They’re always looking for sub route drivers, bin managers, and event and fundraising volunteers. You can apply on their website.
