We have all heard of the dreaded “Freshman 15. I have seen through my peers, and now my clients and their children. Why is it such a problem? How do I prevent it? What are the causes? Why do you still have it 10 years later? The obvious answer is the students are simply just eating too much. Is it that simple? Maybe it is for some. There are many things to consider. Many times, this is the first time a student has had to feed themselves because Mom is not cooking and fast food becomes the main stay. Calories rack up.

The college life also tends to be a life of later classes and later nights. Pizza gets ordered and late night eating becomes the norm. The metabolism naturally slows down in the evening so eating late at night is generally not a good idea. If you need to eat late at night then choose foods that are higher in protein and fiber and lower in fats and carbohydrates. The carbs and fats are primarily fuel and that is something we do not need an abundance of when we are getting close to bed time. Protein and fiber help the body repair tissues and gives us essential nutrients and keeps us full with the fiber rich foods. An example of a dorm friendly food is a can of chicken or tuna and some veggies. You could also have almonds or other nuts to snack on, but remember, moderation is the key. (Brian He is an N.F.P.A. Certified Trainer and holds a B.S. in Health & Sport Sciences from O.U.)

Alcohol also reacts to the body like sugar. Alcohol is a depressant, so it can slow down the metabolism, not to mention the added calories. This spells disaster for many body conscious individuals. For those young men trying to add muscle to their physiques, they need to understand alcohol also inhibits protein synthesis. This will keep them from recovering from those weight training sessions and building as much muscle. The only thing they will build well is a beer gut. The last theory is that many children are not quite done growing and the metabolism starts to slow down when they finish their growing. They have to adopt a healthy lifestyle sooner or later. They might as well start sooner. So what is the answer? If you need to eat fast food then choose leaner selections. Choose wisely from the cafeteria, too. Avoid alcohol and limit late night eating. If you were an athlete in high school then you must realize that. Make wise decisions and use common sense. Pay attention to how your clothes fit, and if you see your weight is climbing, do not ignore it. Those fifteen pounds do not have to be gained to pass your freshman year.

It is common knowledge that people change over time. We also realize that dating can cause a person to act out of the ordinary. These facts of life can sometimes impair long-term relationships. Think back to some past relationships you’ve had in your life. Why did they end? Most of the time, it is because of some kind of change occurred in one person or the other, possibly both. The fact of the matter is that we can’t prevent change from occurring, however, we use steps that will reduce the effect that change can have on a relationship. These steps should be taken from day one. When you first take interest in someone, do you start a romantic relationship right away? Sometimes this immediate action will blind both people from the other’s true identity. Like I said, when people begin to like someone, they often times put on a “front” to impress that person. This kind of facade can take on many shapes and forms, and will almost always be very attractive and appealing. The person may almost seem perfect. But as we all know, that mask eventually disappears and the true self emerges. However, there is a way to prevent this from happening to your relationship. People often say that marrying your best friend can bring about the most successful relationship. Who do you know better than your best friend? This is someone you know inside and out: their flaws, strengths, desires, fears, etc… Luckily, this can happen in your own relationship. Try getting to know someone on a “friend” level before starting to date them. It is easier said than done, but the results will be incredibly satisfying and worthwhile. My suggestion is that you get to know someone in a group setting first. By being just friendly at first, you are able to see who they truly are and not who they are pretending to be. However, it is important that you hide your romantic interest from them for the time being. By starting your relationships out this way, you will know their true self beforehand, instead of it rearing its head in the middle of your relationship.

HOW TO: by henry gray

So, you went out last night in OKC and had a great time.

You had a few drinks with friends, but failed to think of how you’d feel the next day. Now, your head is pounding, your heart is racing, and you feel just plain lousy. Hangovers are never fun, so follow these suggestions and see if they help you the next time you go out for a few beers.

Before bedtime -

There are a few things you can do before going to bed that will help you feel better in the morning. Take a multi vitamin before bedtime with a large glass of water. This will help replace some of the vitamins you lost while drinking and will help hydrate you while you sleep. If you like Gatorade, then drink some of this before bed as well.

Rehydrate -

Alcohol is not a fluid that will hydrate you. It causes you to lose all your fluids in your body. It moves right through you. Drink as much water as you can, and if you can get your hands on some warm water, that is better. A simple rule to follow while you’re out at the bar, is to drink one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume.

21

Eating - While drinking, your body loses a lot of salt and potassium. You will need to get this back into your body so you can begin to feel better. Try eating chicken soup, or if you’re not feeling well, eat something with substance, like crackers or a piece of bread. Bananas also contain a lot of potassium, so that is an option. Drinking fruit juice will help as well, because it contains a high amount of fructose, and that will speed up your metabolism to help get rid of the alcohol. Get up – No one ever wants to jump

right out of bed after a night on the town, but the faster you get up and get moving the better you will feel. If you can go for a short walk or jog, do it. Doing things that get your blood flowing will help you recover faster. Once you do all these things you should feel better in no time. I promise! Also, be safe when you’re out drinking.

The last thing you want is to have regrets because you had one too many.

Q. I am

planning on opening an IRA. Which would be better, and what is the difference between an IRA and a ROTH? … Courtney, 28, The Village.

A. Courtney, the first thing to realize is that both are a type of IRA (Individual Re-

tirement Accounts), and the difference between the two is the way the money you put in and pull out of the accounts is treated when it comes to taxation. As a retirement account, Roth IRAs differ from regular IRAs in some important ways. • There is an income limit on the Roth IRA. If you make too much money, you can’t contribute to a Roth. The limits start if your income is over $95,000 and you’re single, or over $150,000 if you’re married and filing a joint tax return, however as early as 2010 this will change. • The money in your Roth IRA grows tax-free (your using money you already paid taxes on) as opposed to tax-deferred (you would pay taxes when you take the money later) in the traditional IRA. • As long as you keep your money in a Roth for at least five years and when you reach at least age 59 and 1/2, you can take the money out whenever and however you want,

with no tax consequences. • There is no age limit with the Roth IRA. You can make contributions no matter how old you get and you are never required by IRS to take money out. With a regular IRA, you have to stop making contributions in the year in which you hit age 70-1/2 and you have to start taking required amounts then as well. Besides these basics, there are other factors to consider when choosing which IRA is right for you. Your financial advisor and tax advisor can assist you further in determining which would best meet your needs. Remember, send us your questions to be answered directly or in the magazine Brock@so6ix.com

A constructive alliance is forecast for you from the 15th. But you need to be consistent in the way you deal with people at this time, as you’re likely to blow hot and cold. This alliance may be with members of your family, some friend, or perhaps even a complete stranger. As I said, consistency will be the foundation of success, and once you decide on the course of action, you must not take “no” for an answer. Persistence will pay off.

It is an important time to reconfigure and decompress your most important relationships this month. From the 4th through the 9th you will be spending a good deal of time talking about how you feel, and how you can improve those most dear relationships. Around the 5th you will be called away, which could intrude upon these discussions, and you must not be seen to be slacking off or losing interest. Re-assert your commitment at this time.

A romantic attachment is likely to arise in your workplace or with someone you least expect this month. The period of the 9 t h through the 15th is particularly highlighted. You need to be clear in your intentions and ask the other person to state their case. Initially, this may all be guesswork and superimposing of your feelings on each other. This will make it awfully difficult to work, with your concentration levels being deluded by the distraction of loving eyes staring at you from the corner of the office.

You may want to overindulge your desires this month and that may be obvious between the 7th and the 11th. Self-restraint will still allow you to have sufficient fun without the after-effects of too much food, sex, or alcohol. The temptation may be there, but you’re wiser for resisting that temptation to go over the edge. Apart from that, your wallet probably can’t afford it. Some good karma will come your way as a result of your extending yourself to those in need between the 18th and the 21st.

Nervous tension early; your savings, taxes, and other investment portfolios will cause you to lose sleep and be distracted from other important work this month. Speculations after the 9th are likely to be hasty and ill advised. You may be listening to the wrong people when it comes to making a quick buck. Remember that, unless you carefully analyse the markets, study business, and investments diligently, it is good as gambling.

Between the 10th and the 15th, you may be subtlety concerned about how you are coming across to the world around you. There’s a vague dissatisfaction that you haven’t yet achieved everything you want to achieve. But remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Exercise patience, and enjoy the journey of life, otherwise you’ll miss what’s happening now and that is as beautiful as what you hope to achieve in the future. Remain philosophical this month and you’ll be much happier.

The three most influential forces in nature are money, sex, and power. These three superpowers may form the basis of some type of emotional manipulation, which you mustn’t let undermine what is otherwise a loving and nurturing relationship. Between the 3rd and the 5th, you’ll note that these energies dominate the situation and could cause a rift between you and your spouse, partner, or close friend. Don’t let your bad moods be the trigger for them using emotional blackmail on you.

Avoid financial arguments at all costs this month. There’s got to be a better way, Scorpio. Mars, moving through your zone of finances, income, and material values, can be problematic but only if you get too emotionally involved and reactive about other people’s opinions. Between the 1st and the 7th, you’ll need to set aside ample time to carefully assess your position and the position of someone else you either live or work closely with.

There’s nothing worse than feeling obscure or unnoticed. Between the 1st and the 4th, you may feel a little under the radar in this respect, but you mustn’t for a minute assume that if you’re not invited to some function that it’s because you’ve done something wrong. The reasons may not be clear but don’t beat yourself up over it. This cycle will pass fairly quickly and things will get back to normal.

Venus on the 8th moves back into your professional zone, your area of selfesteem, and your ego, indicating a boost to your public persona and the way others see you. You may choose to change your wardrobe to enhance your elegance and make others take note of you for who you are, not so much for what you do. You’re still likely to do good work, and to bring to your activities a touch of style and creativity, which Venus is well known for.

Venus re-enters your zone this month. This means that a postponement or situation you thought may have been lost may return and give you a second bite at the cherry. This could also be favourable news for a sibling or someone close to you, such as a relative or neighbour. There could be cause for celebration and a toasting of the champagne glasses around this time. Finally, it’s important for you to put to bed any private concerns you have relating to health.

Travels are on the cards this month. If inappropriate lunch breaks haven’t added up to enough of what you’d consider reasonable time out, you need to split and head for the hills. If you have a committed partner, they may also be feeling the same and this is a great time to scat! Go and spend some time on a beach doing nothing, or better still, have a few cosy, candle-lit, romantic dinners whiling the time away.

The OSU Cowboys have enjoyed a successful first half of their season, despite losing junior runningback Kendall Hunter and senior linebacker Orie Lemon to injuries and wide receiver Dez Bryant to NCAA suspension. The only blemish on the Cowboys record is the 45-35 loss to Houston. They have not fallen lower than 16 in the AP Poll and in the second week of the BCS Poll they are sitting at 14. The Cowboys head into the second half of the season facing the Texas Longhorns, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Colorado and finally Oklahoma. The Cowboys expect to have Hunter back for the Texas game. No word has come down from the NCAA as to if and when Dez Bryant’s suspension will be lifted.

In Bryant’s absence the Cowboys have had several players step up and make things happen. Sophomore transfer Dameron Fooks has three touchdowns, and Sophomore Will Youman and Freshman tightend Cooper Bassett each have touchdowns recorded. Hubert Anyiam as of late has become a regular target for quarterback Zac Robinson with 19 catches combined in the Missouri and Baylor games. The Cowboy defense has tightened up allowing the opposing offenses fewer yards over the last several games. They held the Baylor Bears to a total of 284 yards. They have also stepped up on the third down battle, Baylor and Missouri combined had 8 of 28 successful third downs against the Cowboys. The Cowboy defense has also had great success at getting to the quarterback with 13 sacks as the Longhorns come to town on Halloween. When it comes to the highlight reel the Cowboys may not be cranking out the spectacular plays, but in the end they doing what it takes to get the job done and stay in the win column.

The OU Sooners have had a turbulent season. They lost their All-America tight end Germaine Gresham before the season started and quarterback Sam Bradford went down in the BYU game with a shoulder injury. The loss of Bradford resulted in the Sooners dealing with their first loss of the season. It also introduced freshman quarterback Landry Jones to the Sooner nation and the world. Jones led the Sooners to two crushing victories over Idaho State and Tulsa. Jones and the Sooners traveled to Miami and the Canes handed the Sooners their second loss of the season, losing by one point. Bradford returned for the Baylor game and the Sooners took care of business 33-7. The Sooners traveled to Dallas to play the Texas Longhorns, and Bradford injured his shoulder on the first play of the Sooners’ second possession when Texas cornerback Aaron Williams sacked him. Once again, Bob Stoops had to call upon Jones to lead the Sooners. Jones did not do too bad. He completed 24 of 43 pass attempts in his first taste of the Red River Rivalry. Yet the Sooners still left Dallas with a loss to Texas, 16-13. Jones is gaining experience, and his pass completions are increasing with every game he plays. He completed 26 of 38 passes in the victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. The announcement of Sam Bradford to take the season- ending surgery to fix his separated shoulder is not a surprise. According to Bradford’s statement,

he expects the recovery time to be 4-6 months. What is a surprise is that he has chosen to throw his name into the NFL draft in April. He still will have a season of eligibility left to play for the Sooners. This news is actually a good thing for the Sooners. The Sooners and Landry will have the rest of the season to get familiar with one another. Landry is already gaining confidence with every snap and he has good numbers for being a freshman. The Sooners should have good second half of their season. The only opponent that should give the Sooners a challenge is the Oklahoma State Cowboys and they play them in Norman. On a personal note: I have enjoyed watching Sam Bradford progress as a quarterback at OU. It is sad to see him go. I wish him the best in a speedy recovery and look forward to watching him in the NFL seasons to come.
